The only two differences you must know: 1) the connectors are different. 2) HDMI inputs and outputs are capable of digital audio; DVI-D is video only. AudioQuest/CinemaQuest HDMI-A uses large Conductive-Coated conductors. Solid High-Density Polyethylene is used to minimize loss caused by insulation, and to insure critical geometry stability. This HDMI-A cable has an HDMI connector on both ends. HDMI-A is also available also available with an HDMI connector on one end and a DVI-D connectors on the other end.

The HDMI standard allows a single multi-conductor cable to transmit digital audio and digital video. Previous video standards (composite, "S", component, RGB) transmit an analog signal. When two digital devices are connected by HDMI, the digital signal does not suffer being converted to analog and then back to digital. While HDMI and DVI-D connections offer the possibility of superior performance, all cables are not all equal. The picture and the sound can be compromised by lesser cables. HDMI is backwards-compatible with DVI-D. For example, a DVI-D source can be connected to an HDMI input either by: 1) DVI-D cable + DVI-D to HDMI adaptor. 2) DVI-D to HDMI Adaptor + HDMI cable. The more inclusive HDMI standard will eventually replace the DVI-D standard. We believe HDMI cables are a better investment. Please be aware that digital audio from an HDMI source will not be received by a DVI-D input. AudioQuest/CinemaQuest HDMI-1 uses large 2.5% silver conductors (twice the silver of normal silver-plate). Foamed and solid High-Density Polyethylene are used to minimize loss caused by insulation, and to insure critical geometry stability. Two RF Stoppers prevent interference problems.

A 75W cable is like a conduit which has to carry relatively low frequency analog video (Composite, up to 4.2MHz), or super sensitive digital audio (SP/DIF, up to 24.576 MHz), or uncompressed High Definition video (HDTV, up to 750 MHz), or cable TV/broadband (CATV, up to 1 GHz). AQ/CQ VDM (preterminated cables) and VSD (bulk installation cables) cables are designed to carry all these signals with minimum interference from the cable.The Ingredients: VDM-1 uses a 2.5% Silver Center Conductor (2.5% SPC) insulated with Hard Cell Foam (HCF). - Progressive scan: Also called sequential scanning, a progressive-scan system displays the entire image--providing all the horizontal lines per frame, rather than every other line--once every 60th of a second. This method reduces flicker and increases stability. Progressive-scan viewing requires a compatible digital TV.
- Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, which is widescreen and appears rectangular, looking more like a movie screen and filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.
- Component video: Unlike a single video input, component video maintains the video signal as three separate signals through three jacks. This connection provides optimum quality. To ensure maximum picture quality, use three video-grade cables for the Y, Pb, and Pr connections.
- VCD: Video CD (VCD) is a video standard that can store audio and video to a compact disc (rather than a DVD disc) using MPEG-1 compression. You can fit up to 74 minutes of video with audio onto a VCD-formatted CD, but you can expect the video quality to be similar to that of a VHS videotape.

This DVD player tends to suck.......2006-04-21
I've had this DVD player for a year and a half. Until an hour ago no problems. Nothing to complain about. I was watching a movie and paused it to go get a drink. When i came back from the kitchen and hit play it won't start again. Re-powered the machine and it won't read any disks anymore. I've kept it in pristine condition & did nothing that would cause such a problem.
My advice to you is to buy something better unless you want to come back to Amazon after aproximately a year looking for a new DVD player.
Piece of Junk.......2005-12-18
Started having problems after a year. DVD wouldn't play. When I attempt to play, it keeps flipping between 'Loading' and 'Open' for a while and finally it'd eject the DVD.

Mine didn't even last a year. The warranty is useless. Akai's customer service is non-existent. After only 9 months it wouldn't play my dvds; it wouldn't turn on; it wouldn't eject the media that was contained inside. I had to take the blasted thing apart just to get my dvd out. It's a waste of money.
Fine DVD player for the price.......2005-06-26
This DVD player has an easier to use remote control than my other DVD players (GoVideo & Sony PS/2). The only quirk is that the Open/Close button on the player is ignored for a few seconds after the Power On button is pressed. I've had it for 9 months and watched a lot of DVDs with no problems.
you don't even get what you pay for.......2005-05-14
I only watch movies once in blue moon, and so didn't want to invest in a fancy dvd player. I've had the product for half a year, and only watched a dozen or so movies in that time. And it is no longer working. Not to mention that I had to exchange the first one they sent me (wasn't working at all). The second one only lasted 6 months, and didn't work right either. I agree with another reviewer that brightness keeps going from very bright to very dark every 10 seconds or so, with most dvds.
