Nicely affordable as well as lightweight, the Acer TravelMate 2423 (2423WXCi) is a great choice for budget-minded business travelers. It features a wide-aspect 14.1-inch WXGA LCD screen that's great for multitasking between application windows--as well as watching DVD movies when you've got a moment of downtime. In addition to an integrated 54g wireless LAN, this notebook also includes Acer's SignalUp technology--a super-efficient antenna is built into the case, creating an omni-directional sphere that extends signal range and quality. Other hardware features include a 1.5 GHz Intel Celeron M processor, 40 GB hard drive, 256 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, and Windows XP Home edition operating system.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: The 40 GB IDE hard drive is on the small side compared to other notebooks. However, it does offer a decent enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors--but not enough for much multimedia storage.
- Processor: The Intel Celeron M Processor 370 is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. The 1.5 GHz speed resides at the very top of the spectrum for this processor (as of March 2006). It also features a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and large 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
- Memory: The 256 MB of installed RAM (PC3200, 400 MHz) will get you out of the gate, but is not powerful enough to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. This desktop has a good 2 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB).
- CD/DVD Drive: The 2423 has a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive that enables you to quickly burn your favorite music mixes to CD (with its 24x write and 24x rewrite speeds) and comfortably watch DVD movies (with its 8x DVD-ROM speed).
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook features an 88-key keyboard with inverted T cursor layout, embedded numeric keypad, hotkey controls, international language support, and 2.5mm minimum key travel. The touchpad has a four-way scroll button.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 14.1-inch WXGA LCD has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels--perfect for watching movies in their intended 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It also has an integrated audio card with Microsoft DirectSound and Sound Blaster Pro compatibility. Encouraging multitasking on your widescreen LCD, the Acer GridVista feature allows you to view up to eight windows simultaneously on dual displays, while supporting "drag and drop" and "snap-to-grid" capability.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The 2423 has an integrated 54g wireless LAN (Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG) that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks and offers Acer's SignalUp technology for enhanced antenna efficiency. You get a basic offering of connectivity options, including:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (one Type II card, 32-bit PC CardBus architecture)
- Stereo headphones/speakers/line-out
- Microphone/line-in
- 1 VGA monitor port
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes with the following selection of preloaded software titles: Acer eManager, Acer GridVista, Acer Launch Manager, Adobe Acrobat Reader, CyberLink PowerDVD, Norton AntiVirus, NTI CD-Maker.

If you make home movies and share them with family and friends, this unit saves a world of time. With this unit and my other computer equipment I can now burn 4 DVD's at once. Did I mention it has lightscribe and dual layer features. Bundled software is somewhat lame, but I use Nero 7 and it works great.
