No More Panics When You Lose Your 4 Remotes.......2006-05-29

I'm one of the few vitims that has 5 remotes laying around. I have a DVD player, VCR, and DishNetwork all hooked up to the TV. I have to keep all of them because the Dish people forgot to set up all of my stuff. I looked up the remote online and the codes only worked for the Sanyo VCR/DVD combo and only the VCR part. So when I was picking up a few fold-up chairs at Big Lots when I looked through the electroncis selection I found a little selection of RCA remotes. There were only two that were universal. One was $6 thahad 3 universal functions but it was loaded with tons of features that are probably found on only the remotes that come with your TV or VCR or DVD player. But I also had Dish, which means I needed a 4 component remote when I found the RCU404. IT's not a feature-full remote but at least it had the basics and hooked up to everything I needed. It had a list on the back that said these and more. Sanyo were listed in the DVD and VCR section but no Memorex was in the TV section but it said AND MORE...and Memorex isn't that small of a brand and when I open the package at home and looked at the codes...oh wow...it works for Memorex.

I'm glad I no longer have to carry around Sanyo, Memorex, and DishNetwork remotes seperately. Now I only have one. The RCU404 is a pretty good remote. It's not feature loaded and it's kinda small for most people but it works with almost anything, is a very inexpensive replacement, and is easy to use. Plus, it has a strong warranty. The RCU404 is a good general replacement for any universal remote or getting rid of that four remote rack on your TV stand (don't be ashamed, more people should use them if they have that many).

Perfect and Cheap.......2006-02-18

This remote is great. I needed something simple and cheap for my kitchen TV which didn't have a remote. This worked perfectly. It is easy to program, and also has VCR/DVD buttons to program. If you need something cheap but easy to use, this is your choice right here!

Fairly pleased.......2007-03-15

Works well enough, but some of the controls are odd. For instance one button is used to turn on the tv ("TV"), while an entirely different one is used to turn it off ("Power"). Also, it is not very compatible with the RCA TV's that include the "Guide Plus" menu. There is no menu button, no exit button, and no guide button, so it is always interesting to try to clear the guide screen once the TV is turned on, and once it is cleared it is impossible to bring it back up with out turning the tv off then on again.

I was able to find my signal well though and have not had any connectivity problems, so it does its job. Overall, I'd say it is as expected for an $8 remote and you would probably get your money's worth, especially if you don't have a guide menu or anything like that. Oh and a caveat, I did not try it with a DVD player or Cable box or anything like that, so I couldn't tell you how it works as far as those electronics go.

Powerful and easy to use remote replaces three others........2006-08-16

It's a shame another reviewer did not carefully read page 8 in the instruction manual about "Menu Mode". It would have been found that the menu arrow direction buttons (+/- channel & volume) do work just fine to make menu selections. I bought this remote for my 92 year old legally blind mother just because of the large size buttons and then set it up to control an RCA tv and Toshiba dvd. I was so impressed I then bought one for our family to control a Zenith tv, RCA vcr and a Cyberhome dvd. This eliminated 3 remotes with over a hundred buttons with one of just 30. All the menu selection functions work just fine on all three devices. I highly recomend this remote. (P.S. I couldn't get the menu buttons to work either for a couple of hours until I finally read the above mentioned page.)

Terrible design - Avoid!!.......2006-06-26

RCA chose to save a few pennies by combining the menu arrow button functionality with the Channel/Volume control buttons. This results in terrible usability. As such, when selecting "Menu" this RCA product (RCR450 Universal Remote) goes into this retarded "Menu-mode" in which you cannot select any option in the menu. Following the instructions in the manual to exit the retarded mode results in a situation where you cannot exit the menu. This remote is going back. Like ALL RCA products, this is no different. I'll exchange it for one from a real brand like Sony. DO NOT RECOMMEND - AVOID!!!!

Works great, but be sure to program the vcr control also.......2007-03-11

We bought this remote control a few weeks ago to replace our TV remote, which died.

It's a very nice remote: It's simple, comfortable to hold, the buttons are easy to push and have a nice feel, and the backlight seems like a useful feature.

IMPORTANT TIP: We only use this remote to control the TV, and so we only programmed in a TV device. However, when we did that, if we ever pushed the record button by accident, that would cause the remote to "crash," and get into a state in which nothing worked. To recover from that state, I would need to take out the batteries, reset the remote, and then reprogram it. The solution (I believe---I just figured this out) is to program in a fake vcr device (just pick any setting for it, since it doesn't matter). Since I've done that, the remote no longer seems to crash, at least when I click record accidentily.

Only one problem and one annoyance........2007-01-02

I love this remote. I have not had any trouble with the battery compartment and it controls everything I own, which is only 2 VCRs, a TV, and a DVD player. My DVD player is a Symphonic, which is not listed in the models of players this controller supports, but we did an auto code search and it found a code that worked. It took quite a bit of time, but it was definitely worth it for us. The one problem is we have an Orion VCR that it will NOT bring up the Menu for, so we have to keep the old remote handy to set the times, channels, programming, etc. Our other VCR is an Emerson and the remote does the menu for that, the TV, and the DVD player. The annoyance is how you have to set up the VCRs and that our TV is a RCA. There is one "VCR" button on the remote and a couple of "AUX" buttons for anything. The Emerson VCR is on the "AUX1" button and is set-up to work on TV channel 91. The other VCR is on the "VCR" button and on TV channel 3. Whenever we want the Emerson VCR we have to set the TV to channel 91 and turn the remote into something (the chair, our chest, etc.) to select that VCR without the TV automatically turning to channel 3. I don't know if this is just a problem since our TV and the remote are both RCAs, but, since "AUX1" is a VCR, it assumes it is set-up on channel 3. We haven't figured out if there is a way for the remote to unlearn this, but we haven't called their customer service, either. All-in-all, a very worthwhile buy if you have several different things you want to control with 1 remote. I would buy it again knowing the problems we've had as the price was right and it does work to our satisfaction.

Controls Everything I Own.......2006-11-24

I've had one of these remotes for about a year now and I'm going to be buying another one soon for another room.

Everything I own is already programmed in, however, the learning ability can make up for any shortcomings. Macros are fantastic for powering everything on and off with the press of a button or two. The keys light up with the press of a button, so in a dark room, I have no problems. This controls my TiVo and my DirecTV DVR (HR20) perfectly. The layout of the buttons are excellent.

An odd thing to say, but true is that this remote fits very comfortably in my hand. Without a doubt, this is the best shape for a remote I've ever used.

Since another review stated a problem with the battery cover, I thought that I would say mine has never accidently popped off. It requires a good push on the plastic lock to remove the cover. No way is this going to just open without any effort.

I have not ran into any memory problems either, so I cannot complain about whatever memory it does have available.

Nice remote spoiled by lousy battery cover.......2006-02-12

This remote has a very nice layout and a good code database. It could learn from several different remotes, but the memory was limited and I did run out of space.

However, the fit and finish are not very good. The battery door comes off way too easily. When it does, the batteries typically come flying out too. That is very annoying when watching a movie!

So, I'm returning it and will continue my search.

Ok remote, but has some issues.......2006-09-20

I purchased this device specifically to control my DVD player after I lost the original remote. Now granted, my DVD player is Panasonic, but given the fact that this is supposedly a UNIVERSAL remote, I was hoping for the best. Unfortunately, things have not gone very smoothly. The main problem with the remote is that while it will do most of the functions of the original remote, it will only perform these functions temporarily. Occasionally I have to reprogram the remote to interact with the DVD player. Also (and I find this slightly odd) after pushing any button on the remote, the light at the top will flash for a minute or two. If you do not push any other buttons (because you are, for example, watching a movie) then the remote will no longer function for anything other than play, pause, and power. In order to regain function, you must push menu or even turn the whole DVD player off and restart. That is highly inconvenient, especially when navigating special features or interactive menus.

There are a couple of aspects that I like about the remote. The style is convenient and fits easily in your hand. The buttons are convenient and easy to use. Programming the remote is relatively easy (good thing since I have to do it regularly), and I like that it can light up to be seen in the dark.

Overall, I'd say this is an average product. If you don't mind being frustrated with the spotty functioning with some devices, you might be satisfied with this remote. Also remember that different brands (of TVs, DVD players, etc.) will have different levels of functioning.

Scrolling problem Fixed.......2007-01-21

For everyone that has written reviews about the scrolling issue. I've found the fix. Mine was doing the same same thing when I had it hooked up with regular a/v cables. I bought a new tv recently, and it supports S-video. So I thought maybe that would fix my scrolling problem, and sure enough after buy an S-video cable and hooking it up, no more scrolling problem. I got up, gave my girlfriend a Hi-five, and it hasn't had any trouble since then. seems this dvd player was made for S-video. The only issue I still have with this player is the front satellite speakers. They are not magnetically shielded so they do some wacky stuff to my TV if they are not far enough away. looking into a cheep shielded pair to replace them. All and all, this is a good dvd and surround system for the price. If your still having scrolling trouble, try out the S-video fix. I hope it helps.

Stay Away!.......2005-09-03

The unit worked well for a short time. Now the video has a terrible scrolling problem making it totally worthless. Save your money and buy a "real" system. You get what you pay for.

Pretty bad machine.......2005-03-29

The good: It cost me $70 for a DVD/receiver combo with six speakers. I never had any of the humming subwoofer, crackling, scrolling video or any other obvious audio or video faults reported on here. I haven't had any serious trouble with the remote The bad: It doesn't play DTS. Dolby Pro Logic II (from Gamecube and PS2 on AV inputs) can be very iffy. Sound seems to jump in and out of the rear speakers a lot. Playing with menu options usually results in an inexplicable loss of sound from some or all speakers. Or sometimes it sounds different when you set an option, then it sounds even differenter when you try and set the option back to normal! Most settings aren't remembered if the unit is switched off and on again. If your rear speakers are too close to you (like i have in my apartment), you must lower their individual volumes every time the player is switched on. The remote is nice looking, but spells all its words out (like "play" intead of > and "stop" instead of []) You can't skip crappy DVD menu intros and other certain things like you can on many other DVD players. conclusion: good price, but only get it if you really really can't afford a better DVD/receiver combo, or better yet, separate components. note: to set the region on the player, go to setup with no disc inserted, press right to get to prefs page. then press 1,3,7,9 on the remote's keypad. Of course it doesn't save this, so you'll need to change it every time you want to play an import DVD.

Fair for the money........2004-12-24

I purchased this unit a few months ago, Had my issues. 1. The remote is hard to read. 2. My cable remote when used to change volume ejects the dvd. 3. The FM reception is the worst. Why would they use a 75 ohm connector when you can't use it. The FM antenna they give you is worthless. 4. Don't mess with the units speakers too much it causes the rear speakers to stop working. The fix is a follows. * Remove any CD/ DVD's in unit * goto setup * next goto Preference Page * Goto Default and Reset to check if working. Goto speaker set up , then test tone, you should hear each speaker turn on. It's is really good with DVD movies which is what I purchased it for. The hassle is I have to use a separatemy FM Tuner for the radio. Better off speanding a little more to get a Sony. Hope this helps

Don' Buy it ......stay away...I did the mistake of buying it.......2004-06-02

I bought one a month back. The picture kept scrolling all the time specially when using the AV1 or AV2. I don't own an HDTV but that shouldn't make a diff. Even in dvds if some scenes are too bright it starts scrolling. I called their customer service and they told me that it shouldn't do that and I should return it. I returned it to circuity city and got a new one. Got home and connected it and guess what it does the same thing again. I wasted my money in buying this. Should've bought an apex for a few more $$s. Just stay away from this product.............
