Something more current........2006-01-02

I picked up this item in mid 2002.

I have had almost no problems at all with this machine since i bought it to replace a Pioneer unit that was stolen from me. This unit from day 1 worked better than the unit it replaced at half the cost.

I have only had problems playing about 5 discs, and I play anywhere from 2 to 20 movies/anime/mp3's/cd's a week. The remote may be on the smaller side but well designed (except for the placement of the mute button) It can be a tad loud on the ejecting of the disc tray, but it's not loud enough to be a concern.

Easily one of the smartest purchases i've ever made.

Very good, considering the price.......2005-03-01

I bought mine 11/2001. Compared to some of my friend's dvd players that were purchased near the same price, it was great. The sound and picture quality were pretty good. Two small complaints - 1)The remote buttons pop off easily 2)The front of the disc tray (the panel)came off and with the help of a 2 year old got stuck inside the tray area. My DVD player died 1/2005. Not from my son; it would start freezing and skipping at the beggining and end of scenes.

AD-1500, mixed experience.......2005-02-28

I've had two of these so far and encountered a number of others, and my experience has been mixed. Their performance is great, they play anything thrown at them and I love the hackability of it, however it seems Apex got hit by the bad capacitor fiasco that plagued computer peripheral makers for several years. Every single one of these units has started acting up eventually and on every one the problem has been a single failed capacitor in the power supply. If you open it up you'll likely see it bulged at the top and possibly leaking. Now this is about a 50 cent part and it's not hard to change *but* most customers will likely have to find a technician to replace it as it requires soldering. So in the end, great player for me since I can fix them myself, but I hesitate to recommend them to non-technical customers unless they've been refurbished already since in my experience this capacitor *will* fail.

3.5 stars for almost 3 years.......2005-02-16

This player can play anything which is good; it even played DVD-RWs for a limited time but then didn't. I still have the receipt to the Apex AD-1500 which I purchased 03/20/02, so I guess if you get lucky it will work almost 3 years. It could have possibly pushed 4 to 5 if I only used it for my other region DVDs like I did in the beginning, but recently have been playing everything back to back in it. If you are going to use the Apex for multiregional than it's a good buy as long as you use your other player for everything else, just don't pay too much for it. I still think it's unreliable though.

Not bad for a cheap player.......2005-01-01

Ours just broke after about 3 years. Not completely, but the power button sticks really badly so it's hard to turn the unit off. Plays all Region 2 disks (after hack) no problem.

We bought this DVD player in 2002. It is still playing movies 5 years later and we have not had any problems with it. Love my little DVD player (and cheap price too).

This is a steal at the price. The default sets the subtitles on, but by following advice of others and selecting an unusual language as default you can fix the problem. One reviewer rated it low because color goes on and off only needs to get a newer tv or get
an rf modulator to fix the problem. Great picture and great starter dvd.

What a disappointment this product is, I would be ashamed to try to sell something like this. First of all the remote hardly works. To make it work you have to stand up to us it and sometimes hold over your head about 7 feet away and it may work after you press a button about 5 or 10 times. They don't advertise it has a very narrow view window. The instructions do not tell you about firewalls blocking the signal, browsing the internet is quite hard, no way to adjust the resolution to view the entire page. The unit I had would not transmit video thru the composite cableing. It would send thru component video though. The only thing good I can say is, is that they have a good idea and it would be very useful. Hope they take some constructive criticizing. Guess I'd recommend buying another computer and place it buy your tv or get a new system that features home media center.

GREAT Product for Windows AND LINUX!.......2002-08-09

Not only does this work great with all flavors of Windows (I tested 98SE, ME, and 2k) but it works perfectly out of the box with my Linux desktop using CUPS. Works flawlessly!

Great Mac/PC Solution.......2002-06-28

Contrary to other reviews, this print server DOES let you network non-PostScript printers to Macs but it depends on the printer model and the manufacturer supplied driver. In my case I have an Epson C80 for which Epson provides a Mac OS X driver that specifically supports an "Epson AppleTalk" printer type. This appears as a separate option from the normal "AppleTalk" printer type. To my OS X Macs I simply install the driver and then browse the network in the Print Center using the Epson AppleTalk printer type and it shows up.

For my Windows 2000 PC, I have to access the print server as a TCP/IP printer and it works fine.

Note that the Epson Printer Utility application doesn't work over the network to either Mac or PC. If you want to be able to monitor the printer, you'll need a hard wire. In my case I use the USB port to connect the printer to my Mac. This allows the Epson Printer Utility to work although it's very rare that I use this software.

The only server that works with Macs and PCs.......2002-01-04

The DP-101 is the only print server I have found that supports Appletalk. When I connected it to my home network, the chooser found the printer immediately. It took quite a bit longer for me to figure out how to configure my PC for TCP/IP printing. (TCP/IP printing was the only way I could configure my PC to print) And of course the price can't be beat.
If you have both PCs and Macs, this is the only way to go.

Mac support requires PostScript printer.......2001-12-17

I bought this server to share a non-PostScript printer (HP 932C) on a mixed PC/Mac network. When connected to the DP-101 the printer always appears to the Macs as a PostScript printer even though it is not. An email exchange with D-Link technical support confirmed that the DP-101 cannot be used to share non-PostScript printers with Macs. To my knowledge this limitation is not mentioned anywhere in the pre-sales documentation.

You get what you pay for.......2001-09-21

I wanted to use the DP-101 to put an HP LaserJet 6MP on a mixed Mac/PC network. Setup was easy enough, but about half the jobs from the Macs just vanish -- they go to the spooler, then go to the printer (at least the printer lights flash), but nothing comes out. This is especially so on multi-page jobs or those with complex PostScript graphics. I emailed D-Link for assistance but got back only an uninformative, boilerplate response. Reading another of the customer reviews, I guess the problem is that the printer can't "talk back" to the computer through the spooler.
One other problem: this thing wouldn't hook directly to the 6MP. I needed to buy a cable. This is a quirk of the 6MP, which hides the cable connectors in a little bay; it's not specifically a problem with the DP-101. On the plus side, it's tiny, inexpensive, and works perfectly (so far) from the Windows side. Mac users get the short end of the stick again ...
