We have four of these phones at our business, but the latest one had an issue where one of the buttons pressed in and snapped below the case - after only two weeks in use. It rendered the phone inoperable.

I love AT&T products... but this one disappoints.......2006-04-18

The AT&T 972 has some nice features to talk about (nice button arrangement, easy to access incoming/outgoing calls list, programming speed dials, etc.). The big problem is that it falls seriously short in outgoing voice quality from the handset and/or the speakerphone. The incoming side seems to be fine on the handset and speakerphone, that is, you can hear them just fine. The problem is that people I call say that my voice sounds "tinny" or is "clipping" (cutting off the high frequencies) when I use the handset. Using the speakerphone, no one could understand me unless I spoke with my mouth right next to the speakerphone. Obviously, this will not work for anyone.

So, I would not recommend this phone to anyone that needs to conduct a conversation over a speakerphone. It will not work and you will have wasted your money.

Nice "Human design" and features, BUT speakerphone problems.......2006-01-09

First let me say that the speakerphone produces plenty of volume, much better than most other phones I have tried. This was especially important since I often participate on nightly conference calls overseas where low receive level is often a problem.

However, there is one major problem that might be related to poor design or manufacturing variation. (I have 3 of these phones). If another person picks up an extension in another part of the house while using the 972 speakerphone, the 972 speaker will cut in and out often introducing an annoying clicking sound for all parties listening. The amount of muting and clicking is differs significantly between the 3 phones I own. In the worst case, the speakerphone is totally muted and I can't hear anything.

When I purchased the AT&T 972, it had been on the market for about four years. I received and installed this phone in early October.

The features that caused me to select this phone in the order of importance are:
1. Two line phone
2. Speaker phone
3. One touch and two touch dialing

The two line phone works with one cable or two cables.

The speaker phone works well. The person you call knows you are on a speaker phone, however, it is very clear. Having two people communicating on my end is not a problem. The volume control could be better; see below.

The eighteen one touch and two touch dialing capability is excellent. These buttons will dial any number, overseas or domestic. This phone stores up to 24 digits for each number and you are able to put a pause in the sequence which is handy for some situations.

To make labels for the one touch dialing, Microsoft Arial 11 Bold worked out well. To make the upper and lower labels easy to distinguish, I inserted two spaces before the lower name. The plastic cover over the one touch buttons is easy to remove yet is secure when you install it.

Things that could be done better:

The display is not back lit.

The volume control is alll programmable from the same volume up, volume down keys.

Below is a description of how the volume control works in different functions. I so wish there was a little mechanical switch for each ringer volume control.

The ringer volume for each line is controlledd with the phone hung up. The volume control adjusts the ringer of line 1 or line 2 according to which line is selected. Each time you press volume up or volume down, the phone produces one ring at the new volume and beeps when you reduce the volume to ringer off.

While on the speaker phone, the volume up or down keys will adjust the speaker volume. Once set, it seems to be correct for all calls. The volume change is in a small range but very adequate even for people with a slight hearing loss. For a reason known only to AT&T, a beep, beep, beep occurs when you change the volume; thus it is my recommendation you take it to the highest volume before you make your first call.

Hand Set - the same volume control works with the hand set as described with the speaker phone.

Other features you may like:

The hand set has a good feel to it and operates properly.

The button sizes and shapes are ideal.

Flash button to actuate call waiting or three-way calling.

Display Dialing allows you to call a number in your Call History List. When returning calls, you can go through your call list until you reach their name and number. Then press Display Dial to call that number. If the hand set is on the hook, the speaker will be turned-on.

Poor Sound Quality.......2005-06-26

I bought two of these phones for my home office. I thought the menu-driven interface was a nice touch, but it cannot overcome the poor sound quality of the handset. The microphone on the handset is hyper-sensitive. My S's hiss and my P's pop so loudly that it almost hurts, and it's distracting to hear myself breathing while listening to the other person. I'm returning this phone for something better.

Good except for annoying echo.......2003-11-16

This phone has a fatal flaw. When you talk even a bit loudly you hear a distorted echo of your own voice. This is so annoying that I had to return this phone. Another negative is that none of three headsets that I tried worked well with this phone. These problems are unfortunate since most other aspects of this product were quite good.

I have owned this phone for about a month. Lots of nice features. However, the phone has started to cause a lot of static and cuts in and out occasionally. I would not recommend as an office phone.

Good low-end phone.......2003-10-21

Overall satisfied with the phone. Best speakerphone at this price-point that I've seen. Decent feature-set for my needs. Biggest complaint is that the mute button "beeps" whenever you go on/off mute. I do conference calls extensively and company etiquette proscribes hitting a number when you want to say something. Many times when I go on/off mute the facilitator asks if someone wants to say something (AT&T says I cannot disable the beep). LCD user-interface a little cludgy, otherwise fine. Wish it had more speed dials; but they are very easy to program. Pressing the numbers takes a little getting used to (they're concave; convex is easier to me). Callers tell me I'm faint when using the headset (not supplied), speakerphone is fine.

Great home office phone for the price.......2003-04-15

I was looking for a phone for my home office. Needed to look nice and something under $200. I was going to go with the Polycom, but it received many poor reviews. I decided to give the AT&T a shot.

First of all, it looks great sitting on the desk. It's well built and has a good weight to it. It won't come sliding across the desk when you pull the handset. The caller ID feature works perfectly with call waiting and is invaluable to me. The display is excellent - large, very readable and very intuitive. Buttons are of good quality and surprisingly well-placed. After using the phone for a day, I felt like I had been using it a year.

The speakerphone is of decent quality, but like most other speakerphones, it's best for listening in on a conference call or sitting on hold. The headphone port and button are wonderful and work quite well. The quality while using the handset is also good. I have almost zero complaints with this phone.

What a dissapointment!.......2003-04-10

I purchased this telephone based on the features, and the name (AT&T). There was a time when you could buy any AT&T phone and be assurred of it's quality. Not any more! The hand set gives an echo to every word I speak, making it very unpleasant to use. People on the other end tell me I come across fine, but hearing your own words reverberating in your ears while speaking is very bad indeed. I'm returning this product. Save yourself the return trip to the store, or return postage, and buy something else.

i bought this tv for the price compared to SONY. the "BUZZ" is inescapable and very annoying. as another reader wrote, i bought this tv for the bedroom, the BUZZ is unbearable, especially at low volume. i returned it and got the 20" flat SONY(300 model), it was on sale, and for 20.00 more, it was well worth it. go with SONY, even if you have to wait for a sale, i got it for fifty buck off. i've heard that toshiba also has a "BUZZ" problem.

Great purchase.......2003-01-26

I own a 27" Sony Wega; it is at my summer home. I recently purchased this JVC model for my winter home, and am very impressed. The menu controls on the JVC are much easier to navigate than the Sony(which I still haven't completely figured out). Overall I recommend the JVC over the Sony; the former's picture is very sharp, and I paid one-half the price of the Sony. When I bought the JVC, the Wega was next to it for the same price. I'm happy with my choice.

Excellent picture marred by hum / buzz.......2003-01-18

First the good: the picture quality is outstanding, better than the Sony Wegas I saw at the store and better than the 27" Sony XBR I have in my family room. It has a video input on the front and 2 inputs in the back - the back inputs are particularly handy because Input 1 can be regular composite video or S-video and Input 2 can be composite or component. (By comparison, the 2nd back video input on the Sony is component only.) The BBE sound feature is a nice addition. I like the fact that the set footprint is relatively small, allowing it to blend in to a smaller room.

Now the bad: a very noticable humming coming from the back of the set make this annoying to watch at low volume levels. This might be tolerable in a family room or other noisy area, but be warned you may not be happy with this set in a bedroom. This is what I bought the set for, and I will be returning it for this reason.

Good deal, great quality..........2003-01-06

After suffering through college with a 13" [local store]TV, I was ready for something a little nicer after graduation. I bought this JVC because it wasn't too big or expensive but still had all of the features I wanted: component video inputs for DVD, S-video inputs, audio and *video* outputs, and a flat picture tube.

I'd been lusting after the Sony KV20FV300, but couldn't make myself pay the extra $$ for it. The main reason I wanted the Sony is because I also have a Sony DVD player and VCR, and its remote could easily control all three components without programming in codes. The JVC remote can control everything--just not as seamlessly--and is not nearly as ergonomic or intuitive. I think I'm just gonna buy one of those Sony universal remotes to control everything...

So far, everything has been outstanding. Picture quality is incredible when watching DVD's over the component inputs, the built-in speakers are decent, and the menu system offers a good bit of control, with convenient features such as a wake-up timer.

I've only found a few drawbacks: First, there isn't an easy way to toggle through the video inputs from the front panel of the TV. This is inconvenient when connecting a digital camera or camcorder as one has to go find the remote to toggle the inputs.

And second, its tuner isn't quite as good as my old Sanyo's at pulling in distant TV stations (I don't have cable).

Other than those two minor things, I have no complaints. Save yourself some money...get the JVC.

Great picture, why the buzz?.......2003-01-02

This TV had a picture that looked better than all the others, including Sony. The only complaint is a buzzing noise coming from the back of the TV, probably the tube. It wasn't real loud, and can't be heard during normal viewing. I returned the 1st one, and found the 2nd had the same noise, so I guess it's normal?

This TV smells terrible!
I have been patient for six months waiting for the smell to fade, but it just keeps on producing that foul odor just as it did the day I bought it.
I will be getting rid of this TV ASAP because of it.

Great picture. Best in class. One thing to be aware of is that the TV puts out a kind of "burnt rubber" odor from back of TV when new. We had to take ours back and get another set. This is probably a short term thing as TV breaks in, but it was bad enough to replace set.

TV NUT.......2002-12-30

I bought this TV for my girlfriend at Circuit City for Christmas. I'm very impressed with it's crystal clear view. This TV goes great with the JVC HRXVC1U DVD/VCR Player. I was considering a combo tv/dvd/vcr but as I saw combo units on display, I see that the doors break off on the TVs, DVD players stop playing, etc. So if that happens you're out a TV if you have to send it back. I'd rather have a separate dvd/vcr unit than a built in one for that reason. If there is one thing I'd improve with this TV it'd have to be the remote control. In the dark it'd be cool to have the entire remote lite up. Other than that, this TV is perfect.
