Works great when used properly.......2005-12-31

I have had great success with this unit. The GPS has never failed once. The key is to position the face of the device pointing straight up. The antenna is under the GARMIN name and only has reception in a 180 deg hemisphere. If the unit is worn like most people wear a wrist watch, the antenna faces horizontal. Half of the sky is not visible to the antenna, and if a building, wall, or other obstruction falls in the visible side, too few satellites will be visible for the unit to calculate position. I wear the unit on the side of my wrist directly inline with my thumb. I run under some large trees and never lost signal. When I mountain bike, I wear it like a wrist watch since my hands are mostly palms down.
I had two glitches with the heart rate monitor when I work a synthetic shirt. The manual says the static electricity causes false readings. I am very happy with this unit.

The Garmin Forerunner 301 has an easy to read, intuitive interface, loads of features and a very accurate HRM. I did days of research before purchasing this item: look no further. I dunked it in a little ocean water the other day by accident - don't do that. I won't hesitate to get a second one.

Works Well.......2005-06-02

I have the Forerunner 201 and liked it very much. Combined it with my Polar S810 and Sportsim software and was able to coordinate the heartrate info plus minus Ok.

The 301 solves that. Garmin's Training Center software (2.3.3 beta) is a vast improvement over the previous "Logbook" software. In particular the graphing function is quite useful. No, the software is not perfect and I have several things that I think should be changed but it works well for me when it comes down to analyzing the run. I also use Topofusion 2.51 (also beta-earlier versions can't read 301 data accurately) and am able to view runs on USGS satelite maps including landsat images. It also has some nice analysis features and allows Digital Elevation Map data to correct elevation data.

The device is nearly identical in appearance - buttons are a little easier to use, has USB instead of serial interface. Does not have WAAS and still is plus minus 30 feet accurate although I think it has improved algorithms. Device software has been improved mostly with addition of multisport options and workouts.

Multisport isn't well supported (IMHO) particulary within Garmin's Training Center, but I think it is still considered beta software.

Workouts are very nicely done and I have used the Training Center software to setup workouts that are uploaded to the device and then executed when you run. These are intuitive and straightforward to use and I have found them to be quite useful, especially with the HR monitor.

No real problems. Some have complained that the instantaneous accuracy of the device is variable and this is probably true but overall the real time data is accurate in my experience (over a year with the 201 and 3 months with the 301). Compared to measuring distances with my car's odometer and then guessing pace based on a stopwatch - what do we want? Once uploaded to the computer data looks pretty accurate. Occasional track points are obviously erroneous - if you use Topofusion you can edit the track to correct these. I have a 4 mile route that I run frequently - 2 miles out and back. Distance variance is about 1/10th mile and the tracks line up well - errors do occur but over about 10 seperate runs they are pretty consistent - not perfect, consistent.

I have had no problems linking to satelites or losing signal using the device in south Texas, Salt Lake, Park City, Maine, New Hampshire, Oklahoma and in airplanes between. This applies to both the 201 and 301.

Heart rate data analysis has been exciting. Never could accurately line up the data points using my Polar monitor and the 201. I have actually discovered helpful correlations using the HR and speed/elevation data graphs from this device that weren't possible before.

Overall, quite pleased with the device. Training Center software is acceptable and for me actually useful. If you are willing to utilize other software (Topofusion, Sportsim) you can get quite a bit out of this device.

Bought this for the auto-reverse..........2002-05-13

I got this at a local store, where I was attracted chiefly by the auto-reverse feature since I planned to listen to books on tape. Here is my opinion after about six to eight months:

The set looks pretty and it works decently. Is it a bargain? Yes, and no. On one hand, I bought it and it still works - and I have dropped it a couple of times (indoors). On the other hand, when rewinding tapes, it can get a bit noisy (although the noise level drops from time to time). Also, the radio stations can be hard to preset (hint: do not lose your guide/manual), and at least one preset station experiences substantial interference (don't know whether that is the problem of the station or this set). The belt clip does not work too well, being rather flimsy, but I carry mine in a fanny pack along with spare batteries and extra cassettes.

I don't know about the 30 station presets since I have only three going (and I erased one by mistake). All the buttons at the top can be a bit irritating, since I listen mostly to one radio station and then to the cassette. The LCD indicator for battery level is useful, but I wish that there was a way of seeing how far the tape was along (either in terms of time played, or even an old-fashioned counter), so that I do not have to keep opening the tape.

The batteries required are two AA batteries and they run a long time, especially with the higher quality ones.

The headphones are of uneven quality, in that they are not quite so comfortable now (with the foam wearing out) and it seems that the sound level has been dropping.

I am reasonably satisfied with this set since it works well for me. If you have higher requirements, do not buy on impulse (unlike me), and/or want different features, you might be rather disappointed.

Don't buy.......2002-04-21

In my first try of this product, the earphones didn't work. The sound went in and out. However, I had backups, so I persisted.

I take my Walkmans on hard, fast walks. This product's belt clip is not secure and will not withstand any sort of medium-hard movement. It will fall off. This happened to me, inevitably, and even though I mostly caught the player by the headphones, the tape player stopped working and the music became jumbled. I also could never program any radio stations.

Go for a Sony.

Like the Aiwa stereos, the headphones start out nice but if you drop the portables, forget about it. Sure i dropped mine maybe a bit more than others but the set I'm on now is the 2nd one i've bought from Aiwa and it's giving me the same problems the first one did. It won't tune the radio stations anymore and what it does tune in isn't the correct frequency number in the window, the tape will stop playing if you don't hold it a certain way, the headphones go in and out, and the clock will not set and if it does it won't advance to the next hour. that's a first, along with the radio station tuning thing.

I suggest getting a carrying case if you purchase this, or basically any walkman if you're clumsy like me or if accidents happen such as carrying too much stuff or having the headphone cord catch on something and pull the radio from your body.

Save yourself the aggravation - DON'T buy this product.......2006-12-13

Unfortunately I bought this camera elsewhere also and payed much more for mine. There is a reason that they have LOWERED there prices (to meet there LOW Quality!!) This camera has serious wiring issues - too many connections to get fouled. I only owned it one year and it has been sent to the shop twice (in the shop more than on the boat)- and is still there. The service is ABOMINABLE - they currently can't locate the camera that I shipped them in August (now December) - despite having USPS confirmation and assigned repair number. (The two people I have had to contact in regards to the problems have also been very rude!)
I would highly recommend looking into the Sea Viewer camera line before wasting your money on this JUNK !!

I just got a camera like this one from another store and I think the camera is grate! the only problem I had was that when I used the charger I got a spark and the charger burned up.all of this happened because when they shipped the camera from the factory the power cable was placed under the battery and it got cut. but because of this I was able to return the item to them and get it here for a lot less.

That additional "D" in the model name is very important - it signals the switch to a different chipset that is NOT supported by anywhere near as many devices.

Bought it at Fry's in anticipation that it would work on my J720. What a waste of time and money! The drivers for HPC2000 were not even on the CD-ROM so I had to google to find them. And after I installed them on my Jornada the blasted thing did not even work! And on top of all this, AmbiCom no longer supports the card! If they no longer support it, why do they still sell the card in retail stores?

Not ready for prime time!.......2005-11-27

I bought the AmbiCom BT2000-CF Blue Tooth CF with PC Adapter a couple of years ago to use with my Laptop. It never worked right with it. They said that they would have drivers for XP. The latest driver is for Windows 2000. How old is that. I have checked their web page for the duration and have never found a driver for XP. Thus my $50.00 expendature has been a total waste of funds. That's my two cents.

Great for PDA's but not for XP Laptops.......2005-02-21

I bought this card about a year ago after I purchased a blue tooth enabled cell phone. I wanted the capability to connect to the web using my phone with my Dell Axim X5 while on the go. It worked like a charm. The connection software that came with the card was very easy to work with and after a few seconds of setup, I was surfing the web.

Setting the card up on my laptop was a another story. The card did not come with a driver that would work with Win XP. I tried to use the blue tooth drivers that are bundled with windows, but I could not get it to work. I went to the Ambicom support page to see if a driver was available. It said an XP driver was in development. That was five months ago and they still have not released a driver. So, buyers with XP laptops beware!

Good hardware. Driver has issues.......2005-02-15

Card seems well made, wireless connections worked good to about 25' max. distance. The "Blue Neighbors" device browser works well. I had no difficulty doing file transfer and dialup connections. Problems began when attempting to use a keyboard, the driver has no HID profiles and the bluetooth stack is not widcomm/drakar/MS V1.4+ compliant, so good luck getting third-party BT keyboard/mouse drivers to work with this card. Adding insult to injury, the driver also conflicts with the IR port in PPC2002, preventing use of an IR keyboard when bluetooth is operating.

If all you need is simple networking/dialup/file push/printing, this card will work for you. Don't buy it if you want full bluetooth versatility in a PocketPC 2002 PDA.
