1 out of 5 stars CD player needs more training.......2005-05-03

Aiwa's XP-SP920UAB3 Sports Cross-Trainer CD Player is a disappointment to say the least. When I purchased this cd player, it was $100.00 and at the time, I thought it was worth every penny. Around 3 months after I bought the cd player, it started making noises and not playing the cd that I put in there. A few weeks later I returned it for a brand new one with a warranty that I bought. The new one seemed to working well and sounded even better than the first one I had purchased. But to my dismay, not more than a month went by and this cd player went dead. And when I say dead, I mean literally dead. Nothing worked on the whole cd player.
A warning to anyone who is thinking about purchasing this cd player, DON'T. It is an over priced piece of junk that breaks within months of purchase. I gave this product 1 out of 5 stars because for how much money you are paying, you should be getting a lot better quality of a product. Save up your money and buy something that is better crafted such as an i-pod.

5 out of 5 stars water, heat, sand no problem.......2004-06-06

This cd walkman is the best a soldier can buy and have it last in the most extreme weather conditions. I am so impresed I would recommend to anyone looking for a die-hard cd player. As everyone has mentioned, the headphone jack to the headphones is all messed up. It shorts out, but can be corrected by buying a better set. I love the sturdy and rugged feel of the system, it's a little heavier and a lot more durable than most out on the market. So, if you are looking for a reliable system, look no further, this has been soldier tried and tested. Hooah!!! Support your troops and President Bush, and let freedom ring.

4 out of 5 stars Isnt 100% non skip but close enough.......2003-08-23

I ordered this product for the second time being that I gave my first to a relative after using it for over a year. This is a great sports walkman because it in my opinion is one of the better brands as far as not skipping(Sony sportman is the overall best)compared to others ive used(5 different kinds in past 10 years). It is not perfect thought because it does have a tendency to skip once in great while but you gotta be really jumping up and down or running rather rapidly for it to do that. Overall any activity you do while using this walkman is not really interfered with. The sound quality is great and the hand strap is a great size for anyone to adjust to. I would recommend it over all the others even though it costs a bit more its a small price to pay for consistency, great sound, and overall enjoyment with less aggrevation from the constant skipping from other CD walkmans that claim to be Anti-skip.

4 out of 5 stars The best unit I have tried for the money............2003-08-08

Out of three portable CD players I have had in the last year, this is the best. The only downsides are that it has no tuner (but you can get it for about twenty more) and the batterhy life isn't quite as long as I would of liked.

I haven't noticed the touchy ear jack problem that others have complained about. The jog-memory works fine while mountain biking and working out so no problem there. The sound is top nothch and I have never had the player open up on me once like other people do.

Bottom Line: An ugly but effective portable CD player that is worth it for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you know how to use it.......2003-04-03

I read other users' reviews and expected a dud. Well, it is a dud if you think you can leave it on the treadmill and race away. The player is not made to withstand the jarring of a treadmill. If you hold it in your hand and run with it, it's fine. I've had no problems with it at all. It is a little unrealistic to expect a manufacturer to make something for $60 that will withstand that kind of bouncing around. Holding it is no problem although it would be nice to have a strap like the Sony one. That's why I give it 4 stars instead of 5, no strap and the headphones are a little too weird for me. No problems with the sound, they're just not the Sony earbuds that I'm used to.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good for people on the go.......2002-07-25

This AIWA Cross Trainer works fairly well - it doesn't skip if you run with the CD Player in your hand. However, I've found that even walking with the CD Player in a cargo pocket of my pants will cause skipping. Unlike the Sony Discman player, there is no hand strap on this AIWA model. So if you don't mind holding on to the CD Player while you walk or run, it's a fairly good buy.

The headphones, however, tend to be a bit uncomfortable after a period of time. The little curly things that hook onto your ears put a little pressure on your ears, causing some discomfort. I often use the CD Player but use the more comfortable headphones from a different model.

5 out of 5 stars Great Player.......2002-05-27

I ordered mine back in August. I have used the player alot, and I feel that it is a great little player. It's antiskip is great, it's water resistant, so I don't ruin it if it start to rain while I'm outside with it, and it looks great. The performance of the unit overall is great.

1 out of 5 stars A company that doesn't care........2002-04-22

We bought the player at the end of November and gave it as a Christmas gift. It began malfunctioning by mid March. The stereo only works when you pull the plug partway out and the unit also stops playing on a random basis...just turns off for no apparent reason. When contacted, AIWA customer service said 'tough luck... you bought it more than 90 days ago so you pay for service'. These are obvious manufacturing defects and occurred within 90 days of use although the actual purchase occurred a month before it was used. I would have though that AIWA would have wanted to stand behind the quality of their product. It will be the last AIWA product I will buy

4 out of 5 stars Great player.......2002-03-06

I first purchased a cheap CD player for my daughter and found that the batteries had to be replaced just about every other day. I purchased this CD player on it battery usage alone. I had no idea how great this cd player really was. My daughter is 5 and uses this in the car during travel. Never a single problem and is easy enough for her to use.

4 out of 5 stars Aiwa produces good quality CD player.......2001-09-18

I run 3 to 5 times a week. I recently purchased a Panasonic jogger CD player and returned it because it skipped so much. Then I purchased the Aiwa XP-SP920. I like the quality of this product however, there is two features that need improving. The first feature is the skip button, it is in an inconvenient place on the CD player. My other complaint is at times the random feature has a mind of its own. I like the 48 second anti-skip, it works very well. I also am very happy with all of the other features on this product.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!!!!.......2007-06-16

I got an iPod mini as a gift from my parents for my birthday almost 2 years ago. I have had to have the Apple store replace it with a new one twice. The first one that I got wouldn't turn on at all. The second one, the wheel wouldn't stay locked, then it wouldn't hold a charge, and by the time I brought back to the store it was completely spazzing. The third and most recent replacement mini that they gave me had been working fine but as i was using it, all of a sudden the screen faded so now the screen is useless. The people at the Apple store told me that they had never seen this happen before and had no idea why it happened. Its not under warranty anymore and they told me that the only thing I could do would be to send it to an online repair shop or basically use it as an iPod shuffle. I never dropped any of the iPods, they never got wet, there is no rhyme or reason (even the Mac genius' couldn't figure out why this has happened) for why I have had 3 of them not work. This iPod mini has been nothing but a hassle for the past 2 years, please save yourself the time, effort, and money. I wish someone had warned me.

5 out of 5 stars Absoluely fabulous!.......2007-05-13

This produc was delivered earlier than expected and in great shape. My family loves having an iPOD to enjoy their favorite music. Great service and a great item. Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars iPod Mini.......2007-03-22

I was a little disappointed by the condition of the iPod-several scratches and dents. So I think it was a bit overpriced, considering the appearance. Since returning the iPod once for service, it has worked fine.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Akimbo AP1200 set-top box links your TV and broadband Internet connection, delivering the largest video-on-demand service to your living room. With the Akimbo Player you can download and store up to 200 hours on its 80 GB hard drive of programming that meets all interests, all of which you can view at your convenience from the comfort of your couch. Browse Akimbo's shows with the supplied remote control and take advantage of the player's wireless networking ability to simplify your hookup.

Streaming video content over your computer can be fun and convenient, but it has its drawbacks. Servers and connections don't always permit uninterrupted viewing, and picture quality is, more often than not, pretty bad. The Akimbo Player improves on that experience in three ways: it downloads content completely before playing it; it uses the high-resolution Windows Media 9 video format for better-than-VHS quality; and the system lets you view programming delivered through your broadband connection right in your living room, through your television rather than your computer monitor.

Akimbo's large network of movies and specialty programming is at your fingertips via the accessible and easy-to-navigate onscreen menu.
Then there's the Akimbo Service, an entirely new network of movies and specialty programming. The Akimbo Service, required for use of the AP1200, offers the nation's largest--and ever growing--video-on-demand-service for television, including more than 60 channels not currently available over satellite or cable TV networks.

All you need to get up and running is the Akimbo Player, a broadband/DSL Internet connection, a subscription to the Akimbo Service, and--for wireless communication between the Akimbo and your Internet modem--the Linksys WUSB12 wireless USB adapter (currently the only Akimbo-approved adapter for this purpose, sold separately). Alternately, just hook up a Cat5 cable (not included) for a wired connection to your PC or network.

You have a choice of 2 service plans: monthly ($9.99) or product lifetime ($199.99), either of which gives you the Akimbo Guide, the Free For All package, and access to Akimbo's Premium Services, which deliver additional content via rental, subscription, or membership. Prices depend on specific content providers.

The Free For All package includes movies, music, news, and sports, with new programs added regularly. Premium Services consist of a variety of channels devoted to movies, sports, music, fitness, lifestyle, kids, foreign-language programming, and additional special-interest categories, and fees for Premium Services can be as little as 49 cents (After Dark adult content is classified as a Premium Service).

The Just In menu gives you snapshots of new arrivals and shows content already lined up for download.
With thousands of programs available, how will you choose what to watch? Enter the Akimbo Guide, a comprehensive program list conveniently organized by channel and category, with a handy option for keyword search. You can preview many selections before downloading them. And whether you're at home or away, you'll be able to use the MyAkimbo.com Web site to browse and select programming to watch later on your TV. MyAkimbo.com also offers movie reviews, Editor's Choice picks, and programming showcases, among other features.

Use the remote to quickly find the programs you want. The remote includes familiar functions like fast forward, rewind, pause, and instant replay. And you never have to worry about what your children are watching: Akimbo uses comprehensive parental controls so you can restrict access to shows you deem inappropriate.

Rear-panel connections include the Ethernet/Cat5 port, a choice of composite- and S-video outputs for your TV or monitor, a set of stereo left/right RCA audio outputs, and an optical digital-audio output for integration with an audio/video receiver. The AP1200 is firmware upgradeable, so new features can be added as soon as the company makes them available.

    What's in the Box
Akimbo AP1200, a remote control, remote batteries, a video cable, an AC power cord, a set-up guide, and a user's manual.

Note: A paid subscription to the Akimbo Service is required for use of this device.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2006-09-05

Akimbo's not the greatest, granted. But it does allow access to programming not normally available to the regular television viewer. Akimbo's cool because you get original programming and favorites from top tv networks, plus the service continues to improve. If on-demand is the future of television, this is a sneak-peak.

1 out of 5 stars Too little, too late..........2005-04-05

The Akimbo media player allows you to watch on your TV content that you choose and download from their servers over your broadband connection, for $10/month (or a $200 lifetime subscription). Interesting idea, but obviously what makes it or breaks it is the availability of interesting or exclusive content. Unfortunately, as many reviewers have pointed out, Akimbo is not delivering in this area.

In the FAQ section of their web site, Akimbo answers the question "why should i get Akimbo when I can download and watch videos on my computer for free" by saying they offer a better viewing experience. If that's all they offer, they should be worried: many products available today allow you to stream video (MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, DiVX, WMV) from your computer to the TV in your living room. None of them requires a monthly charge, and they are almost all cheaper than the Akimbo player despite offering better features. Happauge MVP, Roku HD1000 (high definition network player), IOData LinkPlayer (DVD player with hi-def DiVX streaming player), even the lowly XBox can easily be hacked and turned into a streaming video player.

In my opinion, Akimbo has missed its window of opportunity. Interesting concept, nice implementation, but too expensive and not enough interesting or unique content to justify the fees.

5 out of 5 stars Not a user, but very interested........2005-01-14

O.K., I don't own an Akimbo...yet. I currently use Real Player to watch British TV on Demand (BBC and Channel 4 news). The quality isn't there on Real Player. Quite frankly the technology is new and real player often doesn't provide the content I want in that BBC news broadcasts don't repeat when they are finished. I receive the BBC 10 O'Clock news after it has finished with a screen saying the program is over. Channel 4 News is also by story. Hey, the early pioneers of satellite TV can tell you the same thing (I remember a friend proudly showing me a realtime broadcast of a cricket match that would never have been shown on ESPN). Maybe the content isn't there yet (I've told Akimbo about BBC news and some other internet services),but they could get some great stuff. And the pictures on broadband broadcasts can be pretty good. I'm all for it if someone can give me the content I want when I want it in a manner that compliments my high def TV. Cable just doesn't cut it and neither does Satellite. This just may be the technology I want to meet my needs.

    4 out of 5 stars Major Potential.......2004-12-02

When you buy an Akimbo you buy it because you are an early adopter. This company created a new method for content distribution that earned it the "Best of CES Show" and "Best of What's New" from Popular Science. It works. It's good. And there's no $10 a month fee yet, despite what some users are saying. (The "free-for-all" offering is decent.) Though the content may not yet be available, there's a bunch of new stuff coming. I was able to beta test a unit and I can say that, from an inside source, there are quite a few partners that are going to sign on with Akimbo in the future. No, this isn't an HD box, but if you think about that amount of data that would have to be downloaded over a high-speed connection, this is unrealistic for this type of technology. The Akimbo unit has come a long way from the one I first tested and it doesn't crash or break when you use it! This is like a Mac for PVR (Personal Video Recording) technology. (It's Windows based though, using WMV9...) It's designed for people that want an easy to use interface, but it's powerful enough for the more advanced user, too!

This is the PERFECT gift for college students (or high school boarding school students), especially ones that live in dorm rooms. This is because you can't upgrade your cable service in on-campus housing, and with the Akimbo you can watch what you want. When I was in boarding school we didn't even have cable/sat TV, so this would have been great in high school! (We did have high-speed hookups in the dorms.) I'm giving it four stars for the technology that is there; there's room to improve to five stars when the content is available. If you're an early adopter, then the Akimbo is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Slow downloads, so-so quality, POOR programming.......2004-11-23

Totally agree with the first reviewer concerning content, or rather, the lack thereof. The amount of stuff available on this thing is worse than nil, because it's mostly free, low-quality, BORING clips that you can get FOR FREE on the Internet by yourself. (E.g., try Microsoft's windowsmedia.com.) I haven't tried the premium channels but that's because there's NOTHING worth paying extra for. Downloads are slow and the video quality is VHS-like. I'm afraid to say this is a rip-off despite its cutie-looking interface. Do not buy!
