BW filters are great German optics for protection and for UV.......2007-09-26
Whenever I buy a new lens, I get a BW UV MCR filter to go with it. It provides a protective cover for the lense incase something happend to hit the front of the lens. It also keeps dust and any liquid from getting into the front of the actual lense. Also this filter does not affect the color or the quality of your photos.
Also having a flat glass in front of the camera lens make it easier to clean as well. If you are buying an expensive lens and you want to keep the glass in great condition, then I highly recommend it.

These filters should be called UV-Blocking Filters, because there are filters for technical applications that pass UV radiation and block all the other wavelengths. Nevertheless, the short term "UV Filter" has become established among photographers. UV Filters are ideal for photography in high altitudes (in the mountains), by the sea and in regions with very clean air. The pictures gain brilliance and disturbing blue casts are avoided. Because the glass is colorless, color rendition is not altered, aside from the elimination of the unwanted blue cast, and no increase in exposure is required. That makes a UV Filter very suitable as protection of the front element of the taking lens against dust, flying sand, sea water spray and the like, and it can be kept on the lens at all times. It is recommended for analog color and black-and-white as well as digital photography.

This B+W Interference Filter has a completely colorless glass carrier coated with a number of extremely thin, partially reflecting layers with precisely computed thicknesses, similar to MC coating. Pro:
- Looks deceptively small, but good power for beginners.
- Sturdy construction: feels really solid.
- Excellent optics - passed the star test near perfect!
- Back to basics: nothing fancy, but this thing simply works.
- Looks beautiful even sitting in a corner!
Cons:
- Don't think that small tube means portability: the mount is too bulky to take camping with you.
- High magnifications add significant vibration to the view.
Conclusion: Highly recommended!
PS:
I was really drawn to those fancy scopes with computerized navigation, but I am glad I bought this fully-mechanical device. Star-hopping and manually navigating the sky is the best way to actually learn about constellations and space. If you are over 16, spend your dollar on quality optics and sturdy mechanics instead of gee-whiz computer controls which reduce astronomy to a slide show.
A pretty cool, pretty powerful little telescope..........2003-11-25
I've owned one of these for a couple of years now, and find it to be a pretty good scope for the price. The Mak-Cass design provides a tremendous focal length (1300mm)which means that you can attain alot of magnification per eyepiece used. Alot of magnification... This scope does a good job resolving detail on the Moon and gives decent views of the planets, but it's no rich-field scope- not by any means. I get much better views of nebulae and glalxies through large aperture binoculars. One just doesn't get alot of light thru this tube. Increasingly powerful eyepieces will dim the view exponentially. But this is true of any scope, so don't let that keep you away from this great little scope! It's a snap to set up and the Equatorial mount it comes with is very good. This is a scope which requires very little tinkering with, so you will carry it outside alot more than some bulky, complicated scope. More time under the stars is what it's all about. The Sirius 25mm Plossl eyepiece it comes with will give you 52x in this scope. Best to get some others so you can vary your magnification. Orion offers the back-yard astronomer good quality for the price. It's no Questar, but it's not $7,000.00 either!!! A good
Newtonian reflector with 6 inches of aperture or more will give you better deep sky resolution, but those are big, heavy tubes and folks find lots of excuses for nor hauling them outside onto the back porch on a cold night. The best scope for most of us is one that we'll use alot, and this scope is super-portable! Dark skies, a good planisphere and a cool scope like this one and you're ready learn about your universe. Saturn is overhead tonight, and it looks AWESOME...

I have had this DVD recorder for more than 3 years now, its an excellent product. I makde dvd's from my Hi-8 Camcorder.
I am pleased with this product.
I like it but.................2006-05-21
This is the first dvd recorder I ever purchased. I checked around for the machine requirement I woul like to have (region free, play and record dvd+r and easy to install and operate) this was the one I was recommended. I following the directions and got it to work and play fine the next day. I recorded tv programs with a dvd+rw, no problem, also I finalized the dvd+R. I transferred vhs to dvd+R , very easy. But when I tried to play the dvd+R and the dvd+rw, it would not play on my other two dvd players ( keep saying, check disk), I call the company and they told me that if I finalized the disk, it should not be a problem. The solution was to copy the movie or program on Akai, go to my computer PC (all my other dvd+r were burned on this pc) burned it again as region 1. This way I could see the movie using all my dvd players. The dvd-rw I copy with AKAI only played on the AKAI. Too much work. I sent it back. I recommended for the easy set-up, the picture quality was great and if you only going to play the dvd+R and DVD+RW recorded on this machine. Otherwise, think about it.
all that I hope for.......2006-02-27
My recorder was delivered three days ago. I was very nervous, anticipated the worst based on the reviews. However I have been completely delighted with the machine. For starters, the system navigation is pretty straight forward. I was doing a test recording literally 10 minutes after taking the recorder out of the box. It worked no problem (Memorex 4x DVD+RW). Over the weekend I have tried every feature and I have experimented with various hook up configurations. Every thing works great! Regarding image quality: on EP (4 hour recording time) the image is still considerably better than VHS. With prerecorded discs using the component video cables, the color is vibrant and full and the overall effect is very much like watching film (I have a tube HD TV).
My only complaints include that response time (eg time from when you put the disk in and execute some command) is a little slow, and it does't allow the cable signal to 'pass through' when the unit is off.
So for the price ($145 - unit, shipping and a 3 year warranty) I am happy.

I have had mine for a little less then a year. The recorded picture quality is very good both on EP and SP. Like the previous reviewer, I also am having problems with the drive not opening and closing. When I do manage to get it open, it will not read the DVD unless I open and shut it a few times. This must be a defect in this model. Buyer beware.
Need a replacement drive.......2005-09-18
Hi, bought mine a year ago.... now, the tray won't come out. Grrr.... anyone know what LiteOn DVD+-R/W model would work as a replacement? (I could work with the front bezel off... he he he, but that's not good) The PC dvd recorders here are just cheap anyway.
The unit itself is solid... I even can record blindly (without a TV) he he he... a larger than normal oversample space though. Big, like 10-15% I think.

My Favorite Thing.......2006-12-09
I found out about hend held scanners shaped like markers from an airport catalogue. I showed it to my husband and said, "Could it have been true, it would have been the best thing since sliced bread, but there is no way it would work without a glitch!"
Well, the result of these words, hasty and untrue (as for the second part, I still can back up the first one!), was one of the best Christmas gifts I have ever received. My first scanned words were the ones from the manual. I read the manual over, changed the hand preferences (I am left-handed, and I definitely like using the C Pen better the left-handed way), and I was good to go. By the end of the holidays I was scanning passages from books I was reading (an overjoyed compulsive quoter!) -- in two languages.
Somewhere in the manual it said that you are not supposed to expose the tip to stress and banging -- made sense to me since that's where's the scanner is. The manual suggested carrying it in a pouch, and so I did.
It's been almost a year since I was using my C Pen, mainly for quoting from the books (helped IMMENSLY with preparing quotes for my classes and academic writing) and translating while reading. I would not like to use it to copy an entire page but it works great for a specific quote. I use the dictionary feature a lot as well. It is great to read in a second language, highlight a word and have a translation immediately.
The only problem I have ever encountered was with long quote files. Sometimes the C Pen just would not scan one more line into a file that is already rather long. Starting a new file solves this problem.
I would definitely recommend the product to anyone who needs to work with books and likes to quote. I would recommend Russian-English-Russian dictionary that comes with it -- it's a good dictionary. it's been my favorite thing. My husband certainly has a challenge to meet this Christmas.
Wonderful Little Gadget & 21st Century Dictionary.......2006-01-02
I primarily use my C-Pen 600C for two tasks: (1) reliably scan short snippets of text, and (2) carry a full dictionary and instantly look up words. The best I can say about this gadget is that it just works. In this sense, it is just like an iPod, a piece of technology that solves a very concrete need using common-sense design principles and the right level of technology. C-Pen's interface is extremely intuitive thanks to its rolling button and pervasive use of contextual menus. The scanning of regular text with regular fonts is flawless. Finally, I cannot overstate the usefulness of the dictionary. I do a lot of reading in random places, like in bed before going to sleep, and using a regular dictionary takes too much effort. Using my 3-ounce C-Pen is a different story. I can carry it in my pocket and look up any word with 2 clicks and one pass of the scanning tip. It takes 3 seconds. I highly recommend this gadget.
A Great Value Growth Device!.......2005-04-26
I bought it on Amazon 3 years ago for about $60. Later we found it's not that useful. Then I came back to Amazon and noticed that it's used unit selling for $150.
Wow! I ended up make almost $70(after Amazon fee) by keeping/using it for 2 years. I never seen such a value growing product. I should have invested my money in this. Amazon should be renamed Amazing!
Cool gadget.......2005-02-12
I really like this pen. I am a college student and find it useful to alleviate highlighting and marking in text books. All key info is easily stored and reviewed for tests.
The software that comes with the pen is not Mac compat. and I find it to be really buggy in windows. Terrible software.
Battery life is pretty good. And pen works very well. I can really capture what I want with ease - it is pretty accurate too.
Not very cool looking design, but people do stare and wonder what in the world I am doing when I use it. I have found increased efficiency with the pen. I have owned it for two months.
Never got it to dependably synch.......2004-11-02
Boy, what a great idea. I bought the pen because I do a lot of research and wanted to be able to take notes which could then be downloaded into my computer for editing. That way, I could quickly find and incorporate source material into my own work.
As one reviewer mentioned earlier, my scanned material was messy after transfering it. I didn't mind that too much. It's still one heck of a lot faster than retyping handwritten notes.
It's my inability to consistently synch that caused me to give up on the CPen. I was only able to get the pen to synch once using infrared. This was after spending way too much time holding the pen at various angles and distances from my infrared port.
I was able to synch using the cable but I only attempted to do this once.
When I bought a new notebook computer (a Dell Inspiron 300m) I first downloaded and installed CPen's XP update. I had zero luck getting an IRR connection. I was able to connect via the serial cable exactly once. After that I was never again able to successfully connect.
I communicated by email with CPen's support. Their replies were prompt and friendly but ultimately their advice was pretty basic...the tech equivalent to "take two aspirins and call me in the morning."
I suspect the problem is XP systems based (aren't they all) and because I have minimal knowledge of MS operating systems, this means hiring a rather expensive tech support person to help. There have to be some less expensive alternatives to transfering notes to the computer.
Bottom line: A terrific concept but CPen doesn't deliver. Some folks can tolerate quirky products, I'm not one of them. Reliable, affordable OCR just is not a reality yet. Or if it is, I haven't yet found that product.
