4 out of 5 stars It's A Great Cd Player.......2004-04-25

Man I don't know what the previous owner is talking about. I owned the cd and it's a great cd player. I had no problem from it. But if you want a super cd player and you are willing to spend money, get the sony xplod cdx-m630. And I owned that cd player too and it's amazing.

2 out of 5 stars [inexpensive] but not very good.......2002-04-10

While this stereo is priced well (usually [$$$]), you do get what you pay for. The buttons are not easy to use by touch only. To get from FM radio to play a cd you must push the source button 5 times! There should be a "play" button to go straight from radio to CD. Also, if you use a cell phone in the car, don't get this radio. The radio is not shielded so you will get interference from cell phone. Each time I use my cell phone I have to turn the radio all the way off. Lowering the volume does not help. You still get a loud buzzing sound. I didn't have this problem with my previous stereo. Also, cd's tend to skip for no reason. Even when driving on a smooth road, all cd's will skip.

1 out of 5 stars Nice Sound, built like garbage, company doesn't care........2003-12-18

This unit has great sound and quite a punch. 22 Watt RMS, twin possition BBE processing for nice mids. But the biggest drawback is the quality of the unit itself. First off, the magic flap idea is unique. But the first problem I had is that it wouldn't always flip open for use, but continue to play. Next, All of a sudden all it would do is play the disc, and never even eject. I was stuck listening to the same disc for a couple of days. Then it just quit working all together. When I contacted Aiwa, They informed me that I was just days past the end of my warranty. It would therfore cost me 99.00 to get it fixed. End of story.

This unit is either going in the trash, or I am going to send back to the manufacturer so they can shove it where they may. I will never buy another product from this company. And I would advise anyone I know to do the same. If you ask me, they don't deserve anyone's money.

4 out of 5 stars Useful measuring stick for MP3 car stereos........2003-11-02

After doing careful research, I settled on the Aiwa CDC-MP32 unit for my wife's car. My wife's sister worked for Aiwa, so I got a fairly soliod deal on it; price aside, this unit offered some essential features: displayed ID3v1 tags, handled CD-R and CD-RW discs, and provided an input jack for direct connection of any device (no more car kits!)

After installation and a full two years of product testing, I can really write the definitive review. Too bad you have to search high and low for these: Aiwa was subsumed by Sony last year.

The unit plays MP3s with surprising clarity and volume. The trick to any MP3 playback on any device is to first normalize the volume levels, then decide on a bitrate/ sampling combination.

Without delving into much technical essay, if you have tins ears then 44Hz stereo with 128kbps sampling is more than adequate. If you like a little more fidelity and you are certain you normalized volume, then 44Hz stereo with 192kbps will be your bottom limit. Anything at 256 or higher really requires a top-end system to appreciate. Keep in mind, this is a car stereo.

The display is bright, clear, supplies you with some color options if you like, but more importantly, it will scroll your ID3v1 tags. These tags can indicate the artist, title, and album you're hearing. It doesn't support ID3v2 tags (more information possible), but then again this is four year-old technology and that's light-years in electronics. The tag scrolling is clear and a decent rate.

The "random" function is sometimes prescient, sometimes stuck on a genre. Some days it'll know the right song to follow, and I'll swear it read my mind. Other times, it will insist I need to hear four Donna Summer songs in a row (don't ask, it's my wife's car). It makes me laugh, so that's actually kinda cool.

I don't really like the flip-down face, because I live in a tough town and detachable faces are safer (read: easier to keep). Sometimes the unit will briefly flake: the wife had a bad couple days when the face refused to come back, but it was stuck on a very loud Spanish-language station (again, it's the wife's car and she's Brazilian). The fix was kinda simple but unfortunate: pull the fuse for the radio, start the car, shutoff the car, replace the fuse. You lose your presets and you have to get rid of the default scrolling, but it beats very loud Merengue songs while driving to work.

The remote was useless. It's wireless, swell, but the attachment was worthless for actually attaching it to the steering wheel. It lasted a week. Besides, the wife never used the remote, so no loss there.

After two years, it plays MP3s better than my Sony portable CD player, scrolls the tags so I can read it at night, and pumps considerable volume. AM/FM reception is about what I'd expect, with FM tuning in rather well and AM somewhat spotty depending on the station. It plays pressed-CDs as well, and it'll decode CD-TEXT if your CD is so equipped. That's actually kinda nice.

In all, this unit should be a measuring stick for anyone looking. If you can score one of these lightly used, do it. It's been reliable for us, aside from the few glitches, and it delivers what you'd expect.

1 out of 5 stars I will never buy an Aiwa again.......2002-08-23

I bought the Aiwa CDC-MP32 five months ago. For the first two months I was satisfied with its performance, until that really "cool" retractable faceplate FELL OFF, left dangling by only a flex cable. Luckily it was still under warrantee and I shipped it to a local service center for repair.

It's been ten weeks since I shipped them the broken stereo, and I still don't have the unit back. That's ten weeks commuting to and from work in total silence (I've really improved my whistling skills). I called the repair shop and I called customer service to complain but nobody seems to care. I talked to someone at the repair shop today and they said it will probably be another week, but I'm tired of hearing that. I registered a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and while I was on their web site I noticed that Aiwa has an "unsatisfactory" rating. At this point I am so fed up I don't want the unit back I just want a refund. I left a couple of voice messages with my Aiwa customer service rep (and a fax) saying I want my money back, but they won't even acknowledge my request. They just keep saying it will be fixed soon. So if you're thinking about buying this product definitely get the longest extended warrantee offered.

While it was working I only had one small gripe, and that was with the remote control you strap to the steering wheel. At first I thought it was a great idea, but it kept falling off the strap when I pressed the buttons. Also, since it uses IR for a signal it has to be almost perfectly lined up with the main stereo unit - so it won't work if you are turning the steering wheel (even a little bit). Other than that, I was satisfied with most of the other features of the stereo (while I had it).

      4 out of 5 stars Umm...... I take, well...most of what I said back........2002-07-04

Yesterday, I wrote a review of this unit after having had it in my car for about three weeks, saying that it was a pretty good unit for the money but that I resented enormously the fact that I couldn't get rid of the scrolling advert running across the display. An hour later I got into my car and figured out how to get rid of it. So I retract utterly my erroneous comments about the unit itself, and substitute a minor point about the inadequate manual that came with it, which most definitely does not indicate how to get rid of the ad. (You do it by holding down the "dis" button for about two seconds until it beeps, after which it will stay on the display you have selected without defaulting back to the rolling ad).

Sorry Aiwa. It's great unit after all.

3 out of 5 stars Good unit..1 hugely annoying fault!.......2002-07-03

I recently purchased this unit ...BR>I installed this unit in my 1999 Passat. Nothing could have been more simple. I spent a half hour at the dining room table attaching the harness, and a half hour in the car itself. The player sounds very good for the money ... and works well as far as MP3 playback is concerned, which was the feature that attracted me to this unit, as well as price. All the other features work well and I particularly like the front mounted auxiliary input, so I can plug my portable MP3 player in and play songs that I do not have burned to a CDR. So far, I have only one CDR burned in MP3 format, but it has 145 songs on it. I've been listening to the same CD for over a week and have only reached song 90. For ease of use, if not for sound quality, this format blows a CD changer away.

So what's the HUGELY annoying fault? The pictures which they show of this unit ... show it with a song title or radio frequency displayed on the front. This is very misleading. In fact, you can only get the song title, time, radio station etc, displayed for a couple of seconds, after which the display (far too quickly) defaults back to a rolling ad for the unit itself! I quote: WELCOME TO AIWA CAR AUDIO.....CONTRAST ADJUSTMENT....DSSA.....ULTRA BASS.....HIGH POWER....etc. This, frankly, drives me insane. I don't want to run ads for Aiwa in my car and would be so much more pleased with this unit if I could just set the display to show the information I wanted, or even if it defaulted to the clock instead of this rather sneaky, UNPAID commercial. I was angry when I realized that the unit worked this way and frankly, I feel that one has been put over on me. Nothing I read anywhere suggested to me that I would have to put up with this, rather, the info and the pictures suggested that the display could be set to show the song titles as the disc played etc.

      Otherwise, I'm happy enough.

              3 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2004-02-04

I bought my G.E. DVD player about a year ago and I really didn't use it very much most of my movies are still VHS, so I'm really discouraged from by any more G.E. products with what I have read and from what is happening with mine. At first it would take in the disc and every once in a while-while it was loading it would lock up. Then it started freezing a ways into the movie, and I had to power it down and it wouldn't run any more until it cooled off some, so I let it sit when every it did this very annoying though. Now it is taking in the disc says it is loading and never does you can hear the little motor working, eventually it stops and tells me there is no disc. I figured since it isn't working for me anyway I'd remove the cover and see what it was doing and I loaded a disc and watched it. You can see the motor is working, but it isn't turning the disc you can kind of jump start it by carefully turning the disc while it is in place and it will play the movie, but only for about 5 minutes and then it just says disc and no picture. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone as many people that have had the same or similar problems with this you would think that G.E. would be concered about what was going on and how they could improve it. I gave it three stars, because it was working okay for a little bit, but guys I don't consider this a use a few times and throw away product. I just expected more from G.E. than I should of I guess. Hope my information helps someone. If anything show some people they aren't alone.

2 out of 5 stars Piece of junk........2002-12-31

This DVD Player is a piece of junk. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was because I can get about two hours of good viewing time PER DAY before the thing overheats and skips and freezes to the point where it spits out the disk and says that it cannot read it. This is a very poorly designed machine. There are NO airvents anywhere on the machine. No heat can escape, which leads to overheating, which causes it to skip like crazy. I used to be very fond of GE. Now I'm not so sure. Reading over the reviews has assured me that this is not an isolated incident. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!

2 out of 5 stars Don't even think about getting this dvd player.......2002-09-27

I got this player as a Christmas gift and it was running fine on some of my movies but it would freeze on others. Finally, it quit after running Monsters Inc. Now none of my movies play and getting decent customer service form Thomson is a joke. I still don't have the answers I need and all they want is a credit card # for a replacement with no guarantees of this not happening again. Do yourself a favor and don't bother with this player.

3 out of 5 stars cheap heat bucket.........2002-03-13

Got this player as a replacement for my 1105P which was sent back to GE under an "service request" for a firmware upgrade. Basically it is the same as the 1105P - and has the same problems. The unit overheats and then dies. The first one I received from GE lasted all but 24 hours before it no longer read any known good dvds. I shipped the defective unit back, and got another in return. Being a electronics technician by trade, I decided to see why this unit [goes] out so fast?

I found out that the main processor runs very very hot - caused by a poor circuit design. Combine this with poor air circulation in the case design and you get instant failure. I installed a...1 inch square heat sink on the processor and ran the unit without a cover. 1 month later it is still ticking - no freezes, no skipping - no "unable to read this dvd" messages. Even with the heat sink, the processor is very warm, but not like it was before. If you were to re-install the cover - the unit would probably hang up, so I would suggest a cpu fan with heat sink to cure the trouble. I have mentioned this to GE, which most definitely fell on deaf ears...

Keeping this modification in mind, this is not such a bad DVD player. The quality of the picture from the player is actually quite good, and the digital audio optical output is actually not too shabby. The menu is quite easy to navigate through. The remote is programmable which is nice.

I do wish GE would smarten up and do a real re-design on this model - adding a small heatsink and adding proper ventilation does wonders and would cost them so little.

If you get this model be prepared to do a small modification in order to get a usable product.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment due to frame freeze.......2002-01-06

I have had this player for about two weeks now - I am extremely disappointed with the performance. The first night that we used the player, about two hours into play I experienced numerous frame freezes, which interrupted not only my video, but also the audio. I thought it might be the DVD until I tried a second DVD and had the same problem. I truly expected more from General Electric in quality and performance. I would not recommend the purchase of this player to anyone.
