Another excellent low-cost Canon scanner.......2007-06-03
I already own a N670U scanner (which I've reviewed), but I bought the LiDE 30 as a mobile unit to go with my Thinkpad T30 laptop. Canon's low-cost LiDE line of scanners already scores a big win in that regard; these machines are extraordinarily light and will fit comfortably into any good-sized laptop carrying case (I use a Targus Platinum case, designed to hold 17" laptops, which I bought with the express intention of being able to carry both laptop and scanner, and the LiDE 30 fits perfectly.) The USB interface means that you don't have to worry about packing an AC adapter, and this unit draws very little power, so you can plug it into your laptop's USB port without worries(make sure you have USB 2.0 built in or a USB 2.0 adapter card for best results).
In terms of performance, the LiDE 30 is quite comparable with the N670U. I gave the machine a good workout a couple of weeks ago at the Library of Congress, where I scanned over 400 pages, with a mix of color and black-and-white/grayscale images, in various page sizes, during a 7 1/2-hour period. I find that the LiDE 30 scans black-and-white/grayscale images very quickly indeed, with image quality comparable to or somewhat better than the N670U. The LiDE 30 is, in my somewhat limited experience so far, slower at scanning color images than the N670U, particularly if you use the full-platen setting, but there's nothing to complain about as far as quality goes; the color pictures this scanner produces are every bit as good as the N670U's. Both scanners have a recessed glass platen, which some other reviewers have complained creates problems with scanning oversized images. I don't necessarily agree. I find that with the N670U and LiDE 30 both, if you have a large book heavy enough to create its own pressure on the page being scanned to put the page in proper contact with the platen, and if the size of the image to be scanned is overall the same as or smaller than the platen, you can get good results from processing an "oversize" page. The software is quite good and works well with IrfanView, my preferred image viewer, and the Windows XP software provides a lot of options for expert-level scanning adjustments.
All in all, this is a very fine budget scanner which, though no longer in production, is still well worth getting for somebody who doesn't require a heavy-duty, bells-and-whistles unit or wants something to take on the road as part of a laptop outfit.
Great Scanner - Lousy Software.......2007-05-14
Lousy software comes with the scanner... sometimes REQUIRES you to start up another program AFTER the scan is completed. You tell it NOT to initiate the othe program AFTER the scan - and there is a bug in the software - and it keeps asking/demanding for this program..... BAD BUG .... BAD LOUSY SOFTWARE
good scanner.......2006-03-21
bought it in 2004 for $35, still runs great. USB1.1 is not bad if you don't scan everything at highest resolution, i.e. 600dpi in pdf color format. I highly recommend it if sold under $25.
Using a scanner with an enlarger.......2005-12-23
I bought this as a base for making an image scanner for my Minox enlarger. This requires considerable re-engineering of the scanning element, and a lot of patience. However, the LiDE scanners are easily disassembled, and the scanning mechanism is simple to work with. As this unit is inexpensive, it is also practical in as much as you will likely destroy the first attempt.
As a scanner it is excellent: simple but sufficently high quality for everyday work.
Also look at the LiDE 20 or 25: these are even less expensive and use the same scan head as the LiDE 30/35. The LiDE 20 is available refurb for as little as $20, and the parts can be swapped into the 30 if you break anything.
An excellent experience.......2005-06-25
This is my first scanner. I was a bit wary buying it after reading comments on its problems with Windows XP but I bought it nevertheless. And I am happy that I made that decision. The installation, configuration and its use have all gone so smoothly that I can simply recount it as pleasure. It posed no problems, what so ever, working with a Windows XP Pro.
Its light weight (merely 3 lbs) and the ability to store it vertically on its stand are great features for saving space in your work environment. It scans fairly fast and quiet and I'll recommend it to any person looking for basic scanning needs.

What can't you use a scanner for these days? Whether you're archiving old family heirloom photos or emailing a print article to a friend across the country, the Canon Lide35 scanner does what you need it to do, easily, without taking up much valuable desktop space. A patented Z-lid design allows you to smoothly accommodate thicker originals like magazines and yearbooks, even though the scanner itself measures just 1.5 inches thick. A stand is included to store it in an upright position, and a single cable supplies power and a USB connection. Even better, the cable's included in the box.
Both color and monochrome images come through cleanly, thanks to a 1,200 optical dpi and an interpolated resolution of 9,600 x 9,600 dpi. The included pack of scanning software provides you with plenty of options for storing, sending, and retouching; the scanner will automatically take care of scratches or lint on your originals, freeing your time to let you organize rather than repair them. Canon includes a one-year warranty covering parts and service.

Scan multiple photos at once - save hours.......2007-01-07
This is the second scanner I owned and it is much superior to the one that came before. Not only is the scanner aesthetically pleasing and relatively unobtrusive, it is powered via USB, which makes it one of the few doodads I own that doesn't require access to a wall socket.
I hadn't had much use for the scanner until last week when my mom and I decided that the shoeboxes full of photos should be digitized and preserved.
I scanned over 500 pictures in one day in only a couple hours, with not a lot of work. The key is the remarkable technology that lets you put multiple photos on the plate at once, and it automatically detects the edges and crops the photos, saving them as it goes. I'd say out of the first 500 or so scans, there were maybe 4 mistakes (cutting heads off for instance) but that was easily remedied by rescanning at a different angle).
I use a combination of photoshop and picasa to organize the pictures. If I had to manually scan and crop every photo, I'd go mad. Thankfully this canon has made my job a lot easier.
Works quickly and efficiently.......2005-09-27
This scanner is just what I needed as a professor. I need to prepare class presentations and this scanner works quickly and effectively to scan the diagrams I need to have scanned. It is handy to use because it does not have a separate power supply to haul around. In fact I have one of these scanners at home and at school.
Broke after one year.......2005-09-20
This was a nice scanner until it died. It did a decent job scanning color print photos once I got the right settings. Unfortunately, it stopped working exactly one year after I purchased it. This was on a Sunday, no telephone tech support from Canon on Sundays. I called them the next day and spent almost an hour on the phone to confirm the scanner was dead. Then I was told that I was one day out of warranty, tough luck, thank you for purchasing Canon products. They would not budge at all. For this scanner, Canon gets 2 stars: 4 for actual performance, 3 for the driver software, and zero stars for durability and customer service. Hopefully Epson will be better.
Reliable and Transportable.......2005-09-03
While waiting for a good page scanner, I bought the LiDE 35 to use in scanning my receipts for expense reports and client documents. The cover of my scanner is dented and the TSA has mis-packed it a dozen times causing me to worry that it would be damaged but each time I've unlocked it, plugged it into my USB port and begun scanning. I've been very pleased with this scanner and on occasion when I scan photos find that it does a beautiful job there too. I'm impressed with this scanner.
Great small scanner.......2005-08-13
I bought my LIDE35 at Fry's Electronics for under $40. I needed a scanner in a hurry since my last Paperport had died. The LIDE35 installed and worked with no problems. The quality of my first scan was much better than any done with the Paperport.
I bought this unit because it was cheap and small. It is compact enough to travel with a laptop. USB power means you don't have the weight, mess, and need for an outlet that a wallwart powered scanner has. This is a big plus if you are traveling. Computer bags seem to grow in size and weight when you are running across Ohare airport tryin to catch a plane on the other side of the terminal. Wallwarts require power strips and make a mess in hotel rooms.
The LIDE technology looks good to me. I have had 4 previous scanners. They all died because the CCFT lamp went South after a year of moderate use. LEDs should last much longer. I found the color quality and balance of LIDE better than the CCFT scanners I had used. It is really nice to be rid of the lamp warmup warnings and delays.
Buttons on the front are more of a problem than a feature for me. I ususally operate scanners through the scanner control software, and edit with photoshop. Accidentally hitting a button wastes more time than using it for it's intended purpose ever saved. I would actually pay a few bucks more to have a scanner that did't have buttons.
Other things that would improve the LIDE35 are:
Make it even thinner and lighter.
A lighter thinner USB connection cable. Several aftermarket cables are more compact.
Over all I feel this was a bargain. It works better than any other scanner I've had and will probably last longer since there is no CFFT. Canon did a good job on the LIDE 35.

Excellent scanner.......2006-02-26
I got this scanner to make copies of important documents and import documents into my pc. It's fast, reliable and has excellent resolution for all my needs. I've used it occasionally to import images into my pc and they all turn out great, I'm glad I never wasted a hundred dollars or more on a more expensive scanner because this more than enough for me.
Small and Mean.......2005-11-27
One of the best features about this product is that it uses little to no power! All one would need to do is to use the power given by the USB to use it! It can do very high quality scans while using little power and space. It's not the fastest scanner and has problems with large objects but other than that, buy it!

Customer Reviews:
This MP3 player is awesome........2006-09-03
I've had this mp3 player for about 2 years now and its great. It has a voice recorder, fm radio, fm radio recorder, and memory expansion slot that only supports up to 512mb memory card. I have found some problems with it but it is fine. After awhile the live radio recorder stop working. Also the mp3 player doesn't turn on, so you have to take out the battery and put it back in. Also I have found out that when the battery is low, the screen will be lit, but nothing will be displayed. At first i thought mine was broken, but I replaced the battery and it was fine. Rave mp includes a clip case which i keep on(makes it feel sturdier) arm strap, and weird ear plugs.
No longer supported by company.......2006-05-29
This player, although cheap, has an obvious problem in the firmware. After updating to the latest (and last) revision, anytime you add new songs to the player it brings up a message that says, error on line: xxx. You have to then take out the battery for it to finish updating. Several emails to their tech support notifying them about the issue and pleading with them to update the firmware came to nothing. They really don't care.
Next, I bought several 1 gig SD cards to put in the expansion slot. After working for 2 days, the player *demolished* each card rendering them non-useable.
This product is obviously not supported anymore by the company. Stay away from any clearance items of these players you may find.
Great MP3 Player!.......2006-02-16
It may not be an Ipod 60 Gig., but it is definetly a great MP3 player. It is the first one I have ever owned, and I am extremly happy with it. With no song(s) on it, it can hold almost 18 hours of voice (with NO SD Card!!). It is definetly the best bargain you can get for the price. Unless you've got more than $55 bucks, this is a great choice. Oh, uh, and don't forget to get the firmware update on the website.
If you enjoy reading "USB Device Not Recognized" the Rave MP is for you!.......2006-02-14
I was so happy to get the Rave MP 128 home and was only a little set back by the "Device Not Recognized" error message. After all, I had the tech support number and a FAQ to read. The FAQ did not address the question and the tech support blames it on my not having an updated xp, even though I have a month old hp laptop and have updated it twice since Christmas. So, I am stuck with a non-working device, blame shifting techs and a FAQ that should just be called a "Q" as they never list the most frequent question: "How can I get this piece of junk to work?"
TERRIBLE!.......2006-01-09
I bought this mp3 player about a year ago and it is awfull. Now if you put new songs on it, it brings up a message that says, error on line:128 (maybe not that exact number but you get the idea). Then you can't turn it off so you have to take out the batteries, and restart it. When it finally starts up it has to put all the songs back on with takes a long time. I wouldn't recommend this at all.
