I have owned one for about a year and only successfully faxed something once. If I want something faxed it takes less time to go to Kinko's and fax it. I have spent enough faxing things to by a new fax machine. It takes over 1hr to receive a fax, it had to be sent multiple times and we have a dedicated fax line. What ever you do don't by this for the fax spend the $49 dollars on a Panasonic it worked 100% better.

Canon MF5550 Multifunction.......2005-04-04

This product is referred to as a "prototype" Well--that's all it should have been--it should have never gotten through the exit doors at Canon. I spoke with a Canon customer service rep. about this product and he said "That's what we get for having someone else design it for us."

The envelopes require three settings (2 on the computer and 1 on the printer) to print one envelope--I'll handwrite it, thank you. The feeder tray doesn't recognize label mini-sheets, so I have to throw out the rest of a full size label sheet after printing a couple of labels (bad for the environment, although Canon claims to be an environmentally sound company and expensive!).

The most annoying thing is that the printer has to be unplugged and plugged in daily because it goes offline. Most folks at Canon won't tell you why--when they finally tell you what they think the problem is, they say it's not their problem. Oh--I see--you manufacture these devices in a vacuum and suck us in!

Better Machine than My First Review.......2005-02-23

This is an edit to my first review. For some reason I can't change my "star" rating in this edit. I would now raise my rating to 3 stars if I could. I originally had a problem with the printer going "offline". I've now found that the problem was not the printer, but a bad USB card. Sorry Canon--but you could have been more helpful in diagnosing the problem when I contacted you....

Pros:

1) Fast, accurate printing.

2) Copies well with automatic feed. Good for SOHO user.

3) Has never jammed during a year of use.

Cons:

1) Fax is silent and does not notify the user clearly regarding whether the fax made it through or not. Did it work? Did it not work? Who knows?

2) Printed large documents can spill out of the holding tray and lose their order.

3) Terrible photo scanner. Yeah, I know I should have known that, but I didn't.

DO NOT BUY THE MF5550 - KNOWN PROBLEMS .......2004-12-08

I purchased the MF5550 to replace my old hp inkjet fax machine. Out of the box employees were complaining that they were having problems faxing. Talking to tech support they said that the MF5550 is not compatible with all fax machines. She said there is a known problem in connecting to Sharp fax machines. I was having problems connecting to a Brother and my old fax machine works just fine. When confronted with this she stated there could be noise in the phone line that the MF5550 is more sensitive to. They would not help solve my problem saying there was nothing wrong with their machine. Solution, I put the MF5550 on e-bay and purchased a new laser fax from a different manufacture. DO NOT BUY THE MF5550. It is a steamy moist pile.

Poor Design.......2004-08-07

This HUGE (compared to other printers in its class) printer has a very poor design when it comes to paper handling. The feeder tray comes in two parts that you hook together. The parts that connect two parts are all plastic (of course) and, if you are not careful, easily breakable. But that's not the worst part. The worst part is the paper sensor. The sensor is a black plastic thing hanging down on the tray right next to the rollers. Insert the tray at a slightly elevated angle by mistake and snap, the sensor breaks. Unbelievably poor design.

The only saving grace is the 19ppm speed which is above average in its class.

You would be better off buying HP Laserjet 3030 than this monster. Its same price, smaller, lighter and better.

Canon Toner Cartridge X25.......2007-08-27

This is the replacement for the cartridge in my Canon laser printer/scanner/copier/fax machine. I look at it as the replacement for my old ink-jet printer cartridges, which as a set, cost about the same as this one but only made a small number of copies while this one should be in the neighborhood of 2500! I'm very happy with the quality of the copies I'm getting. For the most part, the things I printed in color were just coincidental and didn't matter anyway.

Simple ADSL Modem with switch and Wirless Access Point.......2007-09-25

I had no issues with this product. Read the short instructions and use the Setup Buddy. I was connected and running with 2 wired computers and 2 wireless within 30 mniutes. I received another manufacture's modem / access point (no switch). It took hours to set up 3 years ago.

This was simple. A dog with a note in it's mouth could set this up in minutes. I have been running for a month. Their are no dropped packets or disconnects. It is solid and far less hot than the prior equipment.

Poor Range.......2007-09-13

I don't own this router, but my father-in-law has one. The range is terrible. Only 2 rooms away the reception is poor. Stick with Linksys products. I just bought the Linksys WRT54GS and installed it on the top floor of the house, and I get great reception, even in the basement 2 levels below.

I have three of these. I am using them in what is (for a home network) a fairly complex configuration. They are based on Linux (Busybox). I have two complaints with them. (1) They haven't been as robust as I would like. (2) There is no way to change the MTU from the web interface. You can change it by ssh-ing into them and manually changing the setting, but there is no way to save it, so the next power cycle means having to set it again.

I have also been through Hawking, Westell, and Zoom products without finding one I am happy with - although the Hawking and the Actiontec have seen the most time in service on my network.

At this point I am searching for something better due to repeated lock-ups, which is how I happened up on this listing. Surely someone makes a "bulletproof" dsl modem?

Best DSL/router I've ever Owned.......2007-04-16

This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review of a product on Amazon. I have had the Actiontec gt704-wg for over a year now operating on a Bellsouth connection (originally 1.5 meg, now 3meg).

In that time I have only had to reboot it once, following a BellSouth service outage about 6 month ago. It has happily weathered numerous power outages with no action needed and being dropped once by a visiting relative and it just keeps on ticking.

We regularly run two or three computer through the Wireless connection on 802.11g and have a VOIP phone that is connected directly to it. I have a 1/2 acre property and get close to full signal anywhere on it, inside the house, outside the house and in a few of the neighbors houses. If I'm working on my laptop while being driven home it connects while I'm heading down the street 100-150 feet away.

I recently hooked up a webcam to my Laptop and took my family (back in the UK) on a live walking tour of my house (inside and out) in full video conference mode.

If you're looking for a single box solution to get a DSL modem, wired and wireless router this is the best choice I have found out there.

After fussing with ATT and Zoom X6, I bought this item. Suffered through the warnings at Actiontec support hotline (I even called ATT as it suggested and got even more lost due to the wrong VCI/VPI number that ATT gave) and finally got through quickly to an agent who was able to help me get connected.

THe support line help convinced me that this ugly box is here to stay.

Just had to order a new cartridge holder for the color ink, but it is still going strong. I took it out of storage as I need it on the road. It's a great printer and light. I have backup battery. Can't use infared as current laptop does not have it. Would highly recommend it to anyone.

i've been using one of these robust little printing contraptions, on again off again, in vanilla mode (black ink only and no batteries), for years. most BJC-80 probs are home fixable and are related to ink catridge and/or printhead drying; a Q-Tip, a little alcohol and test printing (for head cleaning purposes) usually saves the day. the black ink cartridges are relatively economical and they can be home refilled for more economy yet. the BJC-80 is the model-T of portable printers and it is very portable, indeed. a a good solution for hands on people who travel and need hard copy

Piece of Junk.......2006-12-02

As I read prior reviews I was amazed to find that they comment so positively on durability as my experience was exactly the opposite. Last year I purchased two of these and both stopped functioning within a month. In both cases was a mechanical problem where motor and drive mechanism which moved print head stopped functioning properly....would try to print but print head stayed stuck in start up position.

Like most people who travel enough to need a portable printer I am too busy to stay on hold for 20 minutes on help line or argue with someone at Staples why I no longer have box on something I want to return or exchange.

I would steer clear of this one....however for what little time it did work it does print very good quality. It is light, very compact and frankly I thought print speed was more than acceptable. Only problem was occasional jam on feed ....if it would actually work would be a fantastic piece of equipment.

This little portable, dual-voltage printer has lasted and lasted. I use it in Africa in our Bible training school and it has never let me down. It prints handouts, overhead transparencies and course completion certificates with ease and clarity. As far as carrying it in my suitcase on the plane, there's no problem because the lid closes and it makes a hard-shell case. My BJC-80 comes with a parallel port, but for $35.00 or so you can buy a cable that will adapt it to a USB port.

This is probably the most incredible & durable piece of electronic equiptment I've ever owned. It's like the Bunny in the battery commercials....keeps going...and going...and going.
I save on ink by buying bulk ink and refilling the black ink containers with a syring, rotating 3 of these. I have only had to replace the printer head 1 time. I have used the parallel cable for my connection, but will try the infrared with my new computer. Previously (3 years ago) , the infrared connection would not work...but likely due to new drivers, etc. Truly one TOUGH road warrier printer!

The Canon BJC-80 is a go-anywhere compact ink-jet printer that weighs just over 3 pounds. This handy little model produces nice quality output and is small enough to fit in your notebook case--with your notebook.

The BJC-80 prints at 720 x 360 dpi resolution and is rated at up to 4.5 ppm for black printing and 2 ppm with color. Despite the unit's tiny size, the case is well constructed, and all sensitive components are protected when the printer is folded up for traveling. The top cover flips up and backward to a 45-degree angle to act as the input tray; paper ejects from the front onto your desktop. This simple design is quite appropriate for a portable unit.

A small cover on the front of the printer flips down to allow access to the print cartridge. When you press the cartridge button, the cartridge moves to the center of the unit for removal. Separate color and black cartridges come with the printer. The color cartridge holds a tricolor ink tank rated at 80 pages at 5 percent coverage and a black-ink tank rated at 60 pages at 3.75 percent coverage. The black cartridge takes a higher-capacity black-ink tank rated at 170 pages at 5 percent coverage. These ink tanks run dry rather quickly, so you should keep spare ones handy.

For wireless printing from your notebook, the BJC-80 features a built in IrDA (infrared) port in addition to the standard parallel port. Canon offers a rechargeable nickel metal-hydride battery option that prints about 200 pages on each charge, as well as a scanning cartridge that turns the printer into a 360-dpi sheet-fed scanner.

We were impressed with the output quality of this diminutive ink jet. If you work on the road and need to do occasional printing, the BJC-80 can greatly simplify your life.

I purchased 4 refurbished bjc-80 printers for our sales force. They love the ability to go onsite and print a contract while in front of the customer. When used with ink jet paper the output is great. Our reps are using these printers with the infrared port on their compaq laptops, which works great. Only problem is the infrared communications is a little slower than a printer cable, so it seems to slow the prining down 10 or 15%... all in all a excellent value that i recommend to anyone who needs a portable printer with excellent output and great portability.
