Sturdy, works great, easy for kids to use........2002-06-01

We got these for the kids at Christmas, and have had no problems at all. They are easy for the kids to use, and seem to be built much more solidly than many low cost products. The display is easy to read, and controls very easy to operate. We have not changed the batteries since Christmas (5 months now), although they have not been used for long periods of continuous operation. I have no idea how many total hours they have been used. My wife and I use them to stay in contact with the kids at home when we walk in the neighborhood, and find them to be quite clear at about 1/2 mile. We live in a rural area with very little other interference, but found that at Grandma's house in town that it was sometimes hard to find a channel that someone else was not using. Overall this is a very good value, and works well.

These radio's are good for short distance communication. Don't expect them to work all the 2-miles as advertised. Most radio's won't work in that range if you & the receiver are both not in open with no interfernce around.
The radio's look very cool. And they work on 3 AA batteries. You can buy 4 Nimh rechargable ones for just 10 bucks at any target store or here.
The best part about these is that they don't have any antenna hanging out (to be broken with use) and they could be conviently hung with the clip they already have. They don't come with all kinds of fancy features, just the necessary ones.
Even if the quality is not the best, they have the best looks & comfort of use compared to other FRS's around.
And finally they are much cheaper compared to others, you can get one between 10 to 15 dollars at circuitcity or here.

This is a really good way to get into the walkie-talkie world. The little Uniden FRS400 isn't the most elaborate item of its ilk, but it offers the basics plus some features the "big guys" don't always have. (It has a ringer, for instance, but only one ring tone.)

Although the two-mile range may be a tad exaggerated, the 400 is defintely a family-friendly instrument. With its rather small size, a lot of the must-have features are tucked away, such as installing a thumbable-wheel on-off/squelch knob on the upper-left side, and PTT (push-to-talk) button just underneath.

The lower-cost "Eco"-model Unidens, like mine, have their antennae integrated into an oval-shaped carry handle that is not only easy to deal with, but is well integrated into the overall design esthetic. You'll be surprised at how quickly you and your kids can get used to the absence of the standard "rubber duckie" antenna, which can malfunction if frequently grabbed. No trouble here, as the Uniden doesn't need the kind of protruberances the competition uses.

This gizmo is definitely a cool-looking "Star Trek" sort of device, and kids will have little or no trouble getting used to its many intuitive controls. (Yes, there are a couple of slewing buttons but the simplicity of the Uniden 400 means there aren't too many.)

My set, the 400G, has two features that really set it apart from the pack. One: it glows in the dark. Two: the oval, molded carry-handle antenna can be slightly parted and used as a belt clip! Just try to lose THAT.

Small complaint dept: There is no auto-slewing device that can routinely scan all channels like a police scanner; most FRS's have them. The unit uses Alkaline batteries, but it needs THREE of them. Have no idea why. Increasingly, FRS units are like point-and-shoot cameras; you can spend a little or a lot but need to mind the basics. In my opinion the FRS400 is great value and fun to use.

I think this product is great. It has fun features. The only thing wrong is therange needs to be longer than 2 miles. That's alot but my cousin lives a little over 2 miles away so the reception isn't so great. It is very durable. It's not just a hardened plastic but a little bit more. I LOVED this product and if you buy it I hope you would love it too.

I bought this just as sort of a fun toy to play with in Iraq. I couldn't be happier with it. I can see so well in almost 0 lum, I barely ever need the IR light. For basic spotting, this thing gets my 5 stars. Love it. I don't even check out NODS anymore from the arms room.

Yukon NVMT 4x50.......2007-08-09

Item arrived looking good - for a birthday several days later. This allowed me to get a battery for it before the Bday.
On Bday, it functionned pretty well - especially for first generation, but it did not want to "cut off". Tried holding the off button, lightly touching, double pressing, etc. Finally went off. By next day would not turn off at all - had to remove the battery - a little difficult because I think it is supposed to be water proof or resistant. Now comes on whenever battery is installed. I am wary of items that start out defective and have (with a fair amount of difficulty I might add) returned it.

This a quality piece of work, especially when delivered to the door for $149.95. The clarity of vision greatly exceeded my expectations both with and without the use of the built in IR illuminator. Be careful when scanning across a surface that may be reflective, it will sizzle your retina's momentarily. Have a CR123A battery on hand and you are ready, almost instantly, to begin viewing. I'm just getting over a very bad experience with tigerdirect, so I thought I'd warn you all. I ordered the Yukon Advanced Optics 2x24 Night Vision Monocular new, thinking it was coming from amazon.com for some reason (of course I found out later it was from tigerdirect.com). It arrived not looking new at all. The box wasn't sealed and there were no instructions. No problem if it worked, but it did nothing but light up indicating it was supposedly turned on. Definately broken.
I wrote tigerdirect, got a return authorization number and spent $15 mailing it back to be replaced I thought.
Almost a week after they recieved it (I had delivery confirmation), I wrote to find out what was happening with it only to receive a reply 2 days later telling me that they don't exchange products bought over amazon.com and supposedly I was refunded the money. My account isn't showing it yet, but I'm assuming they are good for their word on that.
Not neccessarily a bad company, I'm sure it isn't standard practice for them to send defective merchandise, but the customer service was almost nonexistant. Had I known I wasn't going to receive a working product in exchange, I would have bought another (from someone else) last week.
Just a warning fyi, you may be better off buying from one of the other vendors on amazon.com if you are going to get this.

Having used NVG's in training and war (PVS-2/4/5/7's), I had limited expectations when purchasing this (1Gen). I was much more than pleasantly suprised when I received this and tested it for the first time. The NVMT easily outpaced my memories of the PVS-2 and bordered on the quality I was familiar with with the PVS-4/5's. Passive is quite good, but IR source light shows a dramatic difference in visibility and clarity. Rubberized coating good feature.
