You might be wondering: why spend money on a stand-alone print server when you can just plug a printer into a windows or linux pc and share it?.
Well, it's simple: because you want your printers to continue working from ANY MACHINE in your Home network or office network, ALL THE TIME, even while systems are under maintenance or experiencing downtime.
With this, whenever the network is running, your printers are available!. Even if suddenly all your PCs on the network become unavailable (virus infection, hardware failure, etc) you can still plug a notebook on your lan and have access to your networked printers!.
I've been running AXIS 560 print servers since 2001. It's one of Axis' best-selling products. Imagine how good these print servers are, that they've been producing the same model since 1998!. And they continued updating the product's firmware from version 1.x until the last one: version 7.02, dated 2005.
I've used my two AXIS 560 print servers with the following printers:
Axis print server #1
- HP Laserjet 1100 (laser)
- Epson C62 (inkjet)
Axis print server #2
- Lexmark Optra 40 (inkjet, color postscript)
- TI Microlaser (B&W laser)
And with the following operating systems:
-Windows XP
-Solaris x86
-Linux (SUSE 9.0, LindowsOS 4.0, Sun's Java Desktop System R2)
-FreeBSD
-IBM OS/2 Warp / eComstation
it even works with Macs (but I don't use a Mac, sorry ;-).
It's like a small dedicated computer, you can TELNET to it (default login is root/pass, but of course you can change that), ftp to it, and configure it with very easy to use WEB BASED configuration forms.
You can also see stats about jobs printed, see the print queue, etc.
Top-notch engineering from Sweden. I don't know if they continue manufacturing these in Sweden, but the two units I've got are Made in Sweden. Top notch quality!.
