Product Description

Canon's EOS Elan IIe 35-millimeter camera builds on the superior technology of Canon's EOS family; the most successful family of SLR cameras in the world. The Elan IIe incorporates the EOS family's superior technology with easy-to-use controls to make this camera the ideal choice for both amateurs and professionals. The unit offers such user-friendly features as quick-control dial, auto-focus mode, an easy-to-view LCD panel and automatic exposure control for perfect color regardless of the lighting or time of day. The EOS Elan IIe handles much of the work for you, but still leaves you in control of the shot.Photography provides an endless variety of subjects, and every subject provides an endless variety of creative compositions. The EOS Elan II/Elan IIe makes it easy for you to concentrate on composition, rather than camera function. The three-point Eye Controlled Focus system almost always puts a focusing mark where you want it...where you're looking! This intuitive interface joins you and the camera as never before. With its advanced Eye Controlled Focus, the EOS Elan II/Elan IIe literally becomes an extension of your vision. An intelligent program accumulates even more data when you add calibrations to your channel during various indoor and outdoor lighting conditions.

Amazon.com Product Description

With easy-to-understand key controls and command dial, the Canon EOS Elan IIe offers advanced SLR features. It has automatic exposure control for any light conditions and a built-in flash that lets you shoot indoors or out, day or night. The Canon EOS Elan IIe is fully automatic, but lets you control the essentials manually. It offers nine different programmable exposures and a 10- second-delay self-timer. This unit includes the camera body only; the lens is sold separately.

It is slightly different from the EOS Elan II in that it features eye-controlled focus. This allows the user to control the point of focus by looking at specific parts of the image; an onboard sensor follows eye movement and the lens automatically changes focus as the eye moves to points within the frame.

This model features an LCD screen showing exposure information and LED readouts showing custom functions. The viewfinder provides all the information you need to set up your shots, including depth of field, flash, shutter speed and aperture, and much more. The EOS Elan IIe allows for film speeds from ISO 25 to 5,000. The speed is set automatically in 1/3-step increments; it can also be set manually from ISO 6 to 6,400 in 1/3-step increments.

Film is loaded automatically and advanced to the first frame when the camera back is closed. You have the choice of single-frame or continuous shooting at approximately 2.5 frames per second; the film counter reveals frame number. Film is rewound automatically at the end of the roll, or after 36 exposures with a midroll rewind option. The Canon EOS Elan IIe uses any Canon EF lens.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent camera.......2002-12-01

I've owned my Elan IIe for about 4 years, and love it. Although it's been upgraded to the Elan 7e, I see no need. The IIe has such distinct features and ease of use, I haven't used another camera that compares. Excellent construction, and very durable.

4 out of 5 stars Nice camera, good system.......2002-07-03

The Elan II benefits from Canon's EOS system's advantages, like great lenses and speedlites. I've been using this camera to photograph from wildlife (mainly macro) to rock concerts (28-105 sigma lenses) and have been pleased to find that this camera really meets my needs. It's fast, reliable and obbeys your commands, even if you tell them with your eyes! :)
It's a good buy and can be used by pros and amateurs.

3 out of 5 stars great quirky confusing.......2001-12-28

I've been taking 35mm pictures for 35 years, and this is my favorite camera so far. I shot a couple of hundred rolls of film with this and it really feels like an extension of my vision. The light metering is sophisticated and usually does a great job even in tricky situations, the optical quality of the 28-105 Canon lens is stunning, and the frame is sturdy and durable. What's not to like?

Well, there's the manual to begin with. There is no way you can access and understand all of the features that this camera has (and there are a LOT of features) by reading the manual. They just do a poor job of explaining, for example, the three metering modes and the three autofocus modes. I've had mixed sucess with the eye-controlled autofocus and find it a distraction now, and poor luck with the depth of field mode (if I could only get eye-controlled depth of field to work reliably). Depth of field preview? Pretty basic, my 35 year old SLR had it, the IIe's is not very functional. And for all the ballyhoo about the autofocus modes, the predictive focus mode hunts around so much that your subject will be long gone before the camera locks on to it (just try taking pictures of a puppy).

Comparing this camera to the Rebel, I would wish for a combination of the two: I would like the light weight and functionality of the Rebel with the sturdyness and some of the flexability of the IIe. For a beginner, stick with the Rebel and a good lens (NOT the 28-80), you'll be much happier. As for me, I should be hunting up one of those MagicLantern manuals for the IIe and practicing with the eye-controlled autofocus.

I would rate this camera 5 stars for what it can do, but decided on 3 stars based on what it should do and doesn't or says it can do but doesn't do very well.

5 out of 5 stars great, reliable entry-level SLR!.......2001-08-10

I've had my Elan IIe since 1998, bought on the advice of my former roommate who's also a part-time pro, and it's done exactly the job I needed it for. Much more sturdy than the EOS/Rebel line, the Elan IIe's got a good solid but lightweight frame (aluminum, I think). I wholeheartedly recommend paying the extra 100-200 USD or so to get into the good low-end SLR market without going too cheap (don't forget, buy cheap, buy twice!).

Autofocus technology has improved over the last few years; but although I hear the Elan 7 is nifty with seven autofocus points to the IIe's three, I haven't seen one to say if it merits the bang for the extra buck. Of manufacturers, Canon has had the best autofocus tech reputation for years. The IIe has quite good eye control on 3 autofocus points, if occasionally finicky. It adapts to individual users' eyes, with or without glasses.

Unlike one review I saw elsewhere, I have had plenty of use for the autofocus on landscapes or other nature shots requiring depth of focus. Want to go manual for closeups, portraits, specific situations? It's a flick of a switch on a Canon EF lens. I agree that spot metering is quite limited, but this puppy has three different metering settings that break up the field of view in different balances.

I also dig the main dial setting for aperture-size priority while the camera automatically adjusts for shutter speed (to be sure, almost all automatic SLRs now have this option as standard). Bracketing exposures is also fairly easy (and necessary to get that precious photo just right over three exposure possibilities), and can be done manually or automatically. If you can't spin all of one or two easy-access dials, what are you doing playing with SLRs?

For the techologically-intimidated or situations where you have no time to adjust, the main control dial has several easy to use modes that require no thought/adjustment. A little time spent with the camera will quickly and easily help you graduate from the point and shoot hordes. The manual is one of the clearer gadget manuals I've ever seen.

Add my emphatic vote to those who advise going for deals with an upgrade possibility on a Canon 28-105mm zoom, and do *not* get stuck with a 28-80. The former is just a great all-around lens. Traveling as I do, I've discovered the need to add over time two other Canon lenses, a 75-300 mm (f 4.0-5.6, USM) telephoto zoom, and a 24mm wide angle (f 2.8) fixed lens (nice and sharp!). Sure, you might get a little sharper with Nikon lenses, but you'll pay another few hundred dollars for the privilege, not to mention the significantly greater weight of a more expensive Nikon body. For amateurs like myself, I can't justify that modest extra bang for the buck, especially given the utility and value of my setup while hiking in parks or stomping around fascinating East European cities and countryside.

I try to take care of gear, but my Elan IIe did take a few heart-stopping bounces down some concrete stairs. While some nearby Montenegrins may have picked up several new English obscenities over the next five minutes, this camera picked up just a few scratches on the body and much more importantly, kept the lens alignment. Naturally, I strongly, strongly advise against trying to repeat such a heart-attack-inducing experiment, and probably got exceedingly lucky, but was impressed with the durability of this camera.

Like I say, this entry-level camera rocks; you should only look at the next step down to see what you should skip.

5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2001-01-05

This camera is very easy to use, and it has a wide veriety of features. The dial makes it easy to switch from different modes. And the eye control helps to make each shot focused on your desired subject.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Control.......2004-05-05

This camera is hands-down the best 35mm camera for its time. The eye control feature allows you to pin point the subject no matter what the background. For entry-level use, there is a simple center focus that will allow even the least experienced user to take great pictures.

As with all cameras, film matters. Use the lowest speed possible and try to match the film with the development process.

For baby shots, the red eye reduction works better than any previous camera I owned.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Camera to Grow With.......2001-03-13

I've had my Elan IIe for a year now. It has traveled all over the US providing me and my family with great pictures of our adventures. With other AF SLRs, I used to be happy if a roll of film delivered just one or two really good shots --now I get one great picture after another whenever the full autofocus is used.

I have to admit, I am still learning all of the manual functions... but that is what's so terrific about this camera; its user can move into and out of manual and autofocus controls while learning how to operate the Elan IIe.

The personalized eye-focus option is perfect for families who like to take turns getting behind the camera. I have mine calibrated for use with contacts in or glasses on -and it takes great shots either way.

It is a tough camera that performs well in all kinds of inclement weather and conditions (try a rocking sailboat in the rain photographing breaching humpback whales from several hundred feet! --and still I got some great shots).

I agree with other reviewers, however, that the only real downside to this camera is the lack of focusing points in manual focus mode. I have learned to autofocus and then fine tune in manual --but that doesn't work very well for fast-moving subjects. Also, its autofocus is limiting for extreme close-up subjects. If the user doesn't have a good idea about manual settings (or the desire to even try them)-the sole use of autofocus will limit your picture taking.

This is a great camera for anyone who wants to jump to the next level and break away from the confines of a full-time auto controlled SLR.

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but really, really good.......2000-12-23

I've owned a Canon EOS Elan IIe for over two years now. In general I've been pleased with it, but there's definitely room for improvement. Things I like: the body is lightweight, the controls are easy to use, and there are some great automatic settings that make it easy to take good shots in a variety of conditions (action shots, scenery, portraits, etc.). Also nothing has broken or malfunctioned, which is saying a lot because my camera has been through consistently rough treatment - it gets thrown in a backpack and knocked around quite a bit.

The primary thing that gives me trouble is focusing. The auto-focus usually works OK - the view has three small boxes in it, and the camera senses which box you're looking at and automatically focuses on whatever is in that box. In most cases, that's great. But sometimes the auto-focus screws up. When I take a picture of my dog, for instance, it will focus on the tip of his nose instead of his eyes. So sometimes I override the auto-focus, but the manual focus is difficult to use because there's no split-circle indicator to show you when something is in perfect focus.

Other than that, I've been very pleased with the EOS, and I'd recommend it to someone who wants a powerful, easy-to-use camera that gives you a lot of flexibility.

5 out of 5 stars Great buy - Amazing Pictures.......2000-12-04

The Canon EOS Elan IIe offers something for everyone - from the expert to the beginner. It can be completely automatic, point-and-shoot, or you can make it completely manual or any combination in between. Canon has adjusted some of its dials from previous Elans to make it easier to make adjustments without looking at the top of the camera - very helpful when you're looking at a subject through the view.

One thing that sets the Elan IIe from other camera is its eye control focus system. Three boxes are in the view finder. Look at any one of those boxes, the Elan flashes red, and the camera focuses on that spot. Look in between two of the boxes, and you focus the camera on whatever is between them. While this sounds very high-tech, its incredibly easy to use, works with glasses, and has pre-sets for up to three people since the the camera "learns" more about its user the more the person uses the system. I found this to be incredibly accurate and easy to use. It's useful when your framing a picture with the subject off center.

The camera takes amazing pictures...I mean amazing. It's a great camera for a family - the beginner can use the point and shoot mode, and the family photographer can use all the manual configurations. It can be as simple or complex as you'd like with all the functionality and flexinbility you'll need.

5 out of 5 stars The best buy on the market!.......2000-11-30

This camera is the best value on the market. However, buy somewhere else, you can find it much cheaper if you look around, especially with the launch of the 7e. Try the big New York camera stores. I own and use this camera, I bought it on the advice of a professional photographer. You may also want to consider the all new Elan 7e, but I honestly do not know enough about it to tell you to buy it, and it is more expensive. If you are considering a less expensive camera do not cheat yourself, a hundred dollars will make a world of difference.

5 out of 5 stars Great Camera for Intro to 35mm SLR.......2005-11-29

This camera make and model is close to my heart just because this was the one that I learnt my 35mm SLR photography. The settings and customer functions that the Elan IIe has has met my photographic needs partly because as a student, this was what I could afford and second, I photography insects and closeups of flowers. So investing in a dedicated macro lens combined with this Elan IIe body was the ideal match.

Let's not forget that through custom functions, one can activate DOF Preview button and have the focusing square be utilized as partial metering via eye-controlled functions.

Remember that the camera body is only a fraction of the overall quality of one's photographs. The huge majority being the person pressing the shutter release and the lens.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with this unit, but..........2000-10-12

...this camera represents a little older technology, now about4 years old.... The Canon 7e , which you should investigate, has supplanted this body with some significant improvements, such as autofocus speed and 7 autofocus points. For $300, though the Canon Rebel 2000 also has 7 autofocus points. The Canon Elan IIe has 3 autofocus points, but with the eye control feature. I can't honestly say that the eye control has helped me much as I mostly shoot landscapes, but it would help for shooting people, animals and action. Unlike the Rebel 2000, this unit has a mirror lockup feature, which flips the mirror up for 2 seconds before releasing the shutter--this will reduce the effect of the mirror slap just before shutter release and assure sharper pictures for those shutter speeds between 1/30 and 1/8 seconds. Of course, your mileage may vary if you don't shoot landscapes or still life.

I don't see myself upgrading to a Canon 7 or 7e. I have shot some extremely sharp images using this camera and the Canon 28-105 lens on a tripod. you'll do ok with this or any other camera in the Canon SLR lineup--just remember to buy good Canon lenses, i.e. avoid the 28-80 lens and spend the extra $ to acquire the 28-105 or if you can go into hock, the 28-135 image stabilization lens. If your shooting style falls into the contemplative category, then you might even think about Canon prime (single focal length) lenses, which should get you some extremely sharp photographs. And don't forget the tripod.

Add a flash, like the Canon 380EX and you'll have a hot chunk of plastic in your hands for shooting people, pets, indoors or out. this flash really lights up the yard!

Amazon.com Review

Simplicity, economy and durability--all of these came to mind when we tested the programmable Citizen CD-117 Portable CD Player with Car Kit. While the Citizen CD-117 would not be our first choice for a portable CD player if we needed all the bells and whistles that are on the market today, we did find it to be a nicely designed, well-built player that delivers great sound at an affordable price.

Simplicity
Citizen made the smart choice to keep things simple. A set of standard, conveniently-located skip/search, play/pause, and programming buttons all make for easy operation. Programming functions, clearly laid out in the easy-to-read disc display, allow users to repeat individual tracks, repeat the entire CD from start to finish, or shuffle the tracks randomly. We found the "hold" feature, which prevents users from accidentally pressing the buttons, especially useful during workouts.

Durability
We took the CD-117 anti-skip protection to task, and it took almost everything we dished out. There was nary a skip when we dropped the player from a height of three feet. Under normal walking conditions, and during our strenuous workouts, the player proved to be a stellar performer in the anti-skip department.

Sound
To give the CD-117 its ultimate test, we threw some Miles Davis, Mozart and Bruce Springsteen at it. Granted, we're not talking about a high-end sound system here, but surprisingly, Miles' trumpet held up especially well, from its very lows to its screeching heights. The sound lacks depth, however, so the richly produced symphonic elements of Mozart and some of Springsteen didn't come through, and the "bass boost system" that Citizen boasts about didn't boost much. But the main faults we found with the player had to do with volume and the earphones. We played virtually all of our music with the volume set to maximum, but we still wanted more amplification. And while the earphones delivered crisp, clear sound, they were hard to wear comfortably.

Although Citizen offers no information about battery life in the manual or on its Web site, we found the CD-117 still playing after 6 hours of straight testing with the anti-skip function on.

Overall, the CD-117, with its excellent sound quality and durable design, is a strong option for anyone looking for an economical portable CD player.

4 out of 5 stars Noisy Cassette Adapter.......2005-07-07

Good for the price. Used the player in my car for a month. Sound is not bad. Antiskip works fine. The only thing I do not like is the noisy cassette adapter.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the price!.......2005-06-16

When I saw how much Amazon was selling this package for, I had to jump on it. As the previous reviewer pointed out, the car kit alone (tape adapter and cigarette lighter plug) would usually set you back more than this package. So, keeping in mind that the CD player is basically free, it's not bad-sounding at all. A little shallow-sounding, yes, but not bad for a mass produced good from China. As for the skips the other reviewer mentioned, there is a few seconds' lag time between the start of a song and loading the 15 second buffer (whose progress you get to see on the display). If you're unlucky enough to hit a bump during these few seconds, yes, you will get a skip. But for the remainder of the song you'll be in skip-free cost-free bliss.

5 out of 5 stars For this price, you won't get it wrong.......2005-06-08

Think of the car kit alone, it'll cost at least half of this price. For this price of both car kit and CD player, you won't get this wrong. Especially the sound quality is really nice, much better than a MP3 player. Also as long as it goes in my car, the ASP seems to work quite well. I'll definitely try it longer to see how it works, but for now I really like it.

1 out of 5 stars Not the best performer on the block.......2005-06-03

Bought three of them for gifts but decided to try one out first. It didn't like the bumps on the road while riding in my car. The Anti-skip feature was very sensitive.
