Best sound out of an MP3 player... period.......2006-10-23

I've had my Nomad Jukebox 3 for 3 or 4 years (since the 40GB model first came out), and I can tell you that without a doubt this is the best sound you'll hear from any MP3 player (or WAV player for that matter). Absolutely clean and brilliant. Some other things few seem to mention:

1) RECORDS WAV or on-the-fly MP3s from either line in or OPTICAL IN. These devices are used by many recording engineers for this reason alone.

2) multiple line outs (two in fact) on top of headphone out.

3) Dual battery bays that are easily accessible.

Seeing that you can get one of these cheap on eBay now, if you have a mind to have the best sound possible out of an MP3 player and can stand the large size you can't do better than this one.

Having had an Archos Jukebox previously the sound quality of the Nomad 3 is a breath of fresh air. Just running a $120 set of Sennheiser HD457 headphones.

Then I connected it to my computer. YUK!

The software writers should be sacked and then shot, and repeat! Why are they sticking with this idea?? Every other HD MP3 player just pops up as a drive, and that works for everyone... it's a computer thing!

Couldn't I just have the option to browse my Nomad as a HD. Why the hell not. They can have this convoluted interface if they want but give me a box to tick to let me view it in My Computer. An escape button, please!

I'm looking at Notmad but resent having to buy another piece of software just because Creative think they know best and could not be bothered listening to their customers.

Every other creative product I've bought has been usable. I'll look more closely next time... rest very well assured.

Unbelievable Morons at Creative Labs.......2004-06-23

Hi I have the Nomad Jukebox 3 40GB version for 2 years now. I must say this is the best Audio product I have ever had. I use it in the car and at work and really love its great sound. This week I wanted to buy an extra Nomad 3 for my girlfriend and guess what. They've replaced the Nomad 3... Can you believe that??? Their best product ever. They must be very very stupid.

I just bought this thing from Amazon and all I can say is WOW!!!!

This is probably the best purchase I have ever made. This thing is everything I ever expected and more!! It's easy to use as well - even my wife can operate it!

I have to say, everyone out there who is thinking of buying this, stop thinking. I bought it and I am extremely happy with it the moment I powered this thing on. YOU ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS PURCHASE! I GUARANTEE IT!!!

Storage:
Decent. I have the 40GB and there are already 60 gig drives out there. However, this will last a while and, hey, in five years all of our digital information will no doubt be available Wi-Fi style.
I am at 5200 titles now and have about 40% space left.

Sound:
Absolutely amazing. Now I know what Queensryche would sound like in my living room. And I heard it on the train. I spoke with a Creative Labs designer for this model, and evidently the "EAX" function almost didn't make the cut. I am thrilled it did. This feature alone makes up for the lack of compactness the iPod/mini offers.

Price:
Still high. Was $372 (now $399 again) on Amazon in March 2004. That's way above the price for a similar Nomad Zen.

Connectivity:
None better on the market. USB 1.0, 2.0 and Firewire.

Software:
Horrid. It seems like the designers just found their 256 color pallate. The interface is not intuitive and is clunky. Get Notmad from Red Chair and you will see your Nomad as you should -- as an external drive to your PC. The Ripping function on the Creative software hangs once every five times or so.

Firmware:
The upgrades make this a solid interface. Be sure to upgrade online. (Apr. 2004 version is 1.40.p)

Design:
Clunky. The NJ3 is still compact enough to stow in a jacket pocket or front pocket of a briefcase. It looks like a CD Player, which is fine. I suppose it is less likely to be thieved off me on the street since it looks like a $20 piece of merchandise.

Durability:
This puts the Nomad Jukebox 3 over the top...and perhaps is a benefit of the CD-tank-like shell. While grooving out the other night, my buddy grabbed the attached speakers (Panasonic, $39, Creative's are baaad and costly) off of my garage fridge -- thinking they were wireless. He launched the player 8 feet out and 6+ feet down. At what seemed like 30MPH.
There's barely a scuff on her and she's played tremendously for several days since.

Bottom line:

Pricey. But, in this case, with cost comes incredible hardware/firmware quality. This product is worth the purchase.

Perfect For My Application.......2006-03-16

The CD case has plastic edging and plastic hinges with metal top and bottom covers. I have approximately 10 of these cases which allows me to transport my entire CD collection. They are perfect for my application.

If you are looking for a CD case that will survive a nuclear holocaust, then this probably isn't an item you would be interested in.

Not Quite Steel.......2005-02-23

I bought these for cd protection during travel/shipping, thinking steel was a great idea. Might be, just not this item. The case is of a "binder" design, each cd sleeve holds two cds and can be removed, which is nice. What is not nice is the fact that everytime I open these cases, all of the sleeves have come out. The binder locks that hold the sleeves, unbelieveable enough, easily come open while the case is closed and the sleeves go everywhere within, when the case is open the binder locks do not easily open and are extremely flimsy and easy to break. Now, don't be fooled by the fact that it is called a Steel Case, it's more like a semi-hard plastic that is quite flimsy and not as protective as one might think.

Excellent Product.......2007-08-10

I bought the +v version which also offers a wireless connection to a printer. This device provided one hundred percent functionality right out of the box. Excellent support at the web site for connection to the internet and a printer. Works with a small internet provider: shentel.net.

The only downside: the web accelerator offered free by my ISP does not work. The accelerator interpets the wifi connection to the WiFlyer as having broadband width and thus no need of a dialup accelerator. I'm just starting to trouble shoot this. Worst case: I may have to buy the accelerator from WiFlyer.

Not stuck in the office.......2007-05-13

The Wiflyer wireless works great! Had to call to get some help at
first as I'm on AOL which always has a complication it seems. After that
got figured out...have had no problems.
its wonderful not to be stuck in my office. I can move to another
room to use my computer and even watch TV while waiting for websites
to download...I still have dial-up!!!! We live in a remote area!!

THIS DID NOT WORK AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. BOUGHT FOR MY NIECE BECAUSE LOVE MY OWN WHICH I'VE HAD FOR YEARS NOW. IT WORKS SO WELL AND ELIAS IN TECH IS SO KIND AND HELPFUL IN HELPING TO SET UP AND HAVE A REPLACEMENT SENT IF NEED BE.

SMALL AND ATTRACTIVE AND EASILY TRANSPORTED ON THE JOURNEY.

UPDATE: My WiFlyer works again after a 'Hard Reset'.......2007-01-16

I bought this in early November of 2005 before a trip I took in December. I only needed to use it once with an Earthlink dial-up account. Worked fine. Once. After that, it remained in safe storage away from heat, away from cold, away from the sun, away from handling. In fact, it was stored safely in my laptop travel case, which was stored safely in a closet. No one could have bothered it, since I live alone. I did not need to use again until 6 weeks ago. When I got the Wiflyer out and plugged it in ... NO wireless signal. None. Kaput. My laptop connected just fine to other wireless, just not the Wiflyer because there was NO SIGNAL AT ALL, so there was NOTHING TO CONNECT TO. The little wireless LED in the middle front of the unit does not come on. Of course, the unit is no longer under warranty, so that's the end of that.

Honestly, I think the product is just not well made. The concept was excellent, and yours may work for you for a while, just as mine did. But I wouldn't expect this to last for very long if used frequently. Perhaps some sort of minor jostling caused the unit to fail? I'll never know. And I sure won't buy another one.

***** UPDATE *****

I emailed techsupport at [...] about my difficulty with the wireless LED staying off and no wireless signal being broadcast. I was informed that I could return the WiFlyer to its factory default settings using the following procedure to initiate a "Hard Reset":

(1) Unplug the power connection from the rear of the WiFlyer, then

(2) Hold down the top button (with the lightning bolt), then

(3) Continue holding this lightning-bolt button and

(4) Plug power back into the WiFlyer, and then

(5) Continue holding the button down while the WiFlyer cycles its 5 LED lights on top from right to left, then all LEDs will go solid on. There will then be three beeps, and then the unit will cycle through the LED lights again, and WHEN THE MIDDLE LIGHT (the wireless LED) COMES ON, RELEASE THE LIGHTNING-BOLT BUTTON.

That's it. It brought my WiFlyer back to life and it functions normally again.

I did notice that when the unit is used to connect my laptop via wireless to my broadband modem that I did not see the higher internet download speeds that I see when connected directly to the cable modem via ethernet. I believe this is probably just a limitation of 802.11b in operation.

WiFlyer is absolutely Slick!.......2007-01-13

After hooking up WiFi for a DSL network, I expected the WiFlyer set-up to take a while. But when I opened the box, I saw that the quick start-up intructions were easy to follow. I plugged everything in as described and went back to the instructions to see how to open or launch a connection. When I looked back at the unit, it was already showing a connection on the indicator lights. Still skeptical about dialing up the ISP, I launched Internet Explorer. Instead of going to my home page, it went to a WiFlyer screen asking for the typical dial-up info, such as ISP phone number, user name and password. Once it connected, my home page displayed. On subsequent launches, the WiFlyer screen remembered (by cookie) the phone number and user name. There can't possibly be a better way to provide WiFi for a dial-up connection.
