If you have Vista be warned!!.......2007-08-21
when i got the scanner i was thrilled.. it was ultra slim and was very light to carry.. the usb power connection meant no extra cables.. i loaded up the software and then started the problems.. it just wouldnt install properly.. thats when i discovered that this particular model does not have a Vista compatible driver, from the Visioneer site.. then i called their support staff.. and three calls later, after having spent twenty minutes on hold.. i was told that the driver may be release 'soon'.. so for now i have to use it with another laptop that has windows XP as the operating system..
the good news .. i mentioned before, its light and slim...its cheap .. great for OCR work and scanning pictures..not any expert on the quality of the pictures i scanned but they came out alright.. and fairly sturdy.. so its a great buy.. but look out for a Vista driver if you have Vista on your PC before considering this product.

Color, grayscale and monochrome modes work well with Windows and Linux. Windows installation was a little clumsy, perhaps because the drivers for an older Visioneer scanner were still installed. Linux immediately recognized the scanner.

I bought it several months ago. I gave it 5 stars because it fits my scanning needs and worked without a glitch from the git go. Portability is a big plus. Whenever I need it away from home, I just put it in my backpack along with my laptop.
As one of the previous customers mentioned, this model saves images only in .max paperport format. This is very inconvenient indeed. However if you use OCR software with the scanner it usually lets you save scanned images in TIFF (lossless) format recognizable by image editing programs like Adobe Photoshop. That's how I scan images on this one.
I mostly use this scanner for OCR (Optical Character Recognition), and it works smoothly with Abbyy FineReader. So, no issues here with TWAIN compatibility. Scanning speed at 300-600 dpi for grayscale and b&w is adequate.
I wish the underside of the cover would be black not white. When scanning text, it would prevent bleeding through from the back of the page.
For under $80 with no tax and free delivery, it's a good buy.

I BOUGHT THIS TO REPLACE A 5-inch TV IN OUR KITCHEN WHICH REALLY WAS TOO SMALL FOR VIEWING.THIS UNIT IS THE PERFECT SIZE BUT THE SWITCH TO GO FROM TV TO RADIO IS IN THE BACK OF THE SET DOWN AT THE BOTTOM.THAT IS NOT A GOOD PLACEMENT FOR A TV ON A WALL SHELF.THE TV CONTROLS ARE ON THE SIDE AND IN THE FRONT BUT THEY ARE AWKWARD. THE PICTURE QUALITY IS FAIR ENOUGH BUT NOT GREAT. ON THE PLUS SIDE THE PRICE WAS GOOD.

I love this camera b/c it take good pics and you don't have to rewind it or mess with any bad film out of it b/c there won't be any messed up film. Like the camera i had before it messed up so many of my film that it was a waste of money but this one i love. for the money it is great.
incredibly durable camera.......2001-05-13
I got this when I was looking for a low-end zoom camera some three years ago and it's still in great condition, even after having dropped it several times (not recommended!). In fact, the most recent time I dropped it and the zoom stopped working, only to work again a couple of days later!
Beyond being very durable - probably related to its boxy design (the Volvo of cameras?) - the zoom is actually helpful, even if it only has 4 settings (38, 45, 52, & 60) and the LCD displays the number of pictures taken plus the strength of the battery (what else do you really need?). The camera has the five requisite settings: auto, auto with red-eye, with flash, without flash, and self-timer. The second flash to compensate for the red-eye does a wonderful job - I have had several portraits at close range with little to no red eye effect. Other normal features include a tripod whole plus a manual rewind button on the bottom plus a view to the film canister on the back in case you forget what type of film you put in the camera.
It's basically all you need in a compact zoom camera for a low price, plus did I mention it takes great pictures? Too bad it's out of stock.

Having just acquired a new PowerBook G4, I want to reiterate a previous commenter's reminder that batteries change. I will be giving away or selling three batteries and two adapters from previous PowerBook G4s. The power management specifications for the latest computers are different. The battery for the 15" PowerBook G4 is smaller, last longer and unable to accidentally dislodge because of a new design. All improvements. Purchasers of new computers might want to budget new backup batteries and adapters along with the computer. Owners of older models should consider buying used batteries and adapters, some of which are new or moderately used.
This is NOT for the Titainum version G4.......2004-10-26
Be sure to check your battery part number this is an M9325G/A equivalent. The G4 Titainum uses an M8244G/A battery!!!!

Radeon 7000 VE AGP.......2004-02-01
The issue surrounding ATI and its drivers seems to be getting worse, I used the 7000 running 98SE and get occasional 'twitches' and lockups, annoying but in general not too much of an issue. I recently 'upgraded' to XP and the problems really took off. The system won't run for more than a few minutes before it locks (monitor drops to standby, but system appears to still be running) sometimes its resets itself and other times just stops....... Windows XP has a useful feature that identifies system problems for you, and every time it is due to the ATI driver. I have downloaded and installed every available driver I can find, to no avail. I updated the motherboard drivers even flashed my bios, still no joy.
It seems that the card itself is OK but the drivers are rubbish. If you get it to work then you are lucky, the vast majority seem to have problems. Unfortunately most people don't realise what is causing the trouble.
I say simply this, until ATI improve their drivers, the radeon series of graphics cards is an area to avoid. I base this statement on the fact that I replaced the card with a similar spec version from Nvidia (geforce mmx400 64mb) and it runs perfectly with no more lockups !!!
I am not alone in this opinion of ATI ... go see bulletin boards all over the internet !!!
Pavilion Issue.......2004-01-04
The problem is not HP's fault. I have a Pavilion XG833 and the real problem, as a few of you have stated, is the onboard graphics. The onboard graphics are by Intel. I have an intel i80 chipset, which on intel's website it says you cannot update the graphics AT ALL... NO CARDS EITHER. However, if you have an i80e chipset you may disable the graphics driver and install the Radeon 7000. So basically, if you have an i80 chipset you're screwed.

When I compared video cards while looking for a replacement, the ATI Radeon 7000 certainly seemed to be a good value - lots of bang for the buck ... When the card functions properly, it's great. But I kept running into problems where a high-pitched squeal would emit from the card and my system would lock up and I would have to re-boot. I determined through elimination that it was the video card that was acting up (at first I wondered if my processor was the culprit - gulp!).
Once I narrowed the problem down to the card, I thought at first the card itself was defective, but when I updated the driver, it appeared to work OK. Such is life with Windows I run XP Professional SP1 and keep the OS updated regularly - and I run with a 19' NEC MultiSync 95 monitor). So I thought my problems were over. Wrong!
A few weeks later, the symptoms re-appeared. I could run in safe mode with Windows default video driver, which I was thankful for. So I did a lot of research into the issue. ATI had not updated the driver on their web site, but the driver distributed with Windows XP had been updated. In fact, I determined that Windows Update had "automagically" updated my driver. Curses! So I rolled back to the old driver. Once again, things appeared to be OK.
The problem re-surfaced again and again, and each time I spent many hours surfing the net to find a good driver. I kept encountering more and more complaints on the message boards about the quality of ATI drivers. It seems that they are hardware guys who want to move iron and view software drivers as a necessary evil, so they only put in the effort they absolute. Trust me when I say I tweaked the settings, disabling acceleration and what-not, trying to keep Windows that the driver happy to no avail. My time is worth money, and I finally decided the 25-40 hours I spent far exceeded the value to be gained.
So I removed the ATI driver. Windows kept trying to re-installing it, and the symptoms would re-appear. It got so I couldn't even log in to Windows. I finally let Windows have its way, then booted up in safe mode and disabled the device in the Hardware Manager. Since then I've run with the Windows default driver at 1280x1024. No acceleration, no high refresh rates, but at lest the machine doesn't crash. I write software for a living, so I'm happy if I can crunch hard on the CPU. Good thing I'm not a gamer.
So buy the Radeon 7000 if you are (1) buying on the cheap and (2) not concerned with running with all of the acceleration and high refresh rates supported. If you can afford a little more, I recommend you shop around and do your homework to find another card that end-users who do the things you will want to do have expressed satisfaction with.

HP Pavilion 7940 + This card = up the creek.......2003-08-15
O.K. Here is the deal: if you go to the ATI website and do some digging you will find a nasty little lump of coal that reads as follows:
"Systems with onboard VGA controllers may hang during boot of RADEON 7000 graphics adapter is installed...A number of systems are currently known to exhibit this issue, including:
hp Pavilion xe783, HP Pavilion 7940, eMachines TI 140, eMachines TI 150...
Now if you do not believe that then go to virtually any tech support group like yahoo or hp or anywhere, and type radeon 7000. Boom there are the huddled masses crying to be free.
If you have one of the above machines DO NOT BUY THIS CARD unless you just want to practice selling things on ebay or half.com or Amazon or anywhere else you can off-load this albatross. The fault lies with HP and their crazy machines I am sure but don't expect any help from them or ATI. You are [toasted] if you have one of those machines and this card and friends, there is no escape. If you really want this card and have one of those machines listed, its more fun to take out[money amount]from your wallet and set it on fire, at least that way you can enjoy the pyrotechnics, which is more color display than you will get with this thing on one of the above machines. Here endeth the sermon, you have been warned!!
Great for the price.......2003-01-12
I have a Dell 2300 and installed it myself. If you have a built in on-board video card (intel graphics card) you have to disable it and uninstall the driver to get it to work.
People who did not like the Radeon 7000, did not know how to install it. Here is the down and dirty for the novice computer users.
BEFORE you do this next step, install the software that come with the Radeon 7000. Then you are ready to uninstall the old graphics card & driver.
Click Start:
Click Contol panel, then System Properties, then click on hardware. You will see "driver signing" and "device manager". Uninstall the intel driver & disable the Install graphics chip in these places. Then reboot your computer and plug your monitor into your new card.
