We've had this for well over a year (without the DV option), and it worked what I'd call "fair." We didn't expect prices on DVD/VCR recorders to come down as quickly as they did. We found a LiteOn DVD/VCR on super sale on Black Friday last year and haven't used the ADS unit since (the LiteOn recorder is far superior).

What bothers me most is the price I'm seeing on this now, as old as it is. It appears you can pick a used one up on eBay for a fraction of the new price, but I'd want to be sure I could return it if it didn't work, based on the number of complaints I see from others. We got ours at Circuit City, I believe, and I knew I could return it if it didn't work. I updated the software, had plenty of drive space, and read the instructions. In our case, it worked fairly well on some very old, rather poor quality VHS tapes, and though it wasn't a great image, the DVD was better than the original VHS tape. I suspect those who found this to be junk may not have upgraded software, etc., and/or may not have had adequate systems to include drive space, in most cases - it works adequately on some systems, so clearly it's not just a problem with this product, even if their tech support stinks.

My recommendation? Spend just a little more and get a stand-alone VCR/DVD recorder that will copy both ways from one to the other. You can get them for little more than the current price for the ADS unit. Or, if you happen to find a used one for very little, and your budget won't support a combo recorder, this will at least get your old tapes to DVD in reasonable quality (at least in our case, and apparently we're not the only ones despite some poor reviews).

No matter what - get your tapes copied to a disc ASAP. Tape images deteriorate, DVD images don't (though DVDs themselves can deteriorate if not properly stored - i.e. out of sunlight, for example). And you can always "upgrade" the DVD to the next new technology with little or no loss in quality. Tapes are magnetic and both the image and the tape itself deteriorate.

I've had it for about two months have dubbed some twenty of my VHS tapes. While I can capture fairly easily the moviefactory 3SE is lacking(software/driver updates applied)
I get better results with Nero.

and often the resultant DVD's are coasters,,,for no obvious reason.

I've also begun using the Plextor m402u capture-X,,,
much better product,runs cool for a few dollars more.
same !@#$ software(studio 8, ugh!). But other software is included.

Easy installation. Software installs easily however you MUST use the latest software, updates and patches available onlineat www.adstech.com and www.ulead.com. Capture worked flawlessly the first time and burning to DVD went smoothly.

Avoid this ADS Instant DVD (?) at all cost. Have tried on two computers, and the USB2 cannot be detected on either. Sorry I bought it.

I can't really add too much to what's already been said. The product doesn't work, tech support is non-existent. I bought it online, received it on a Friday, returned it the following Tuesday after reading about the tech support problems everyone else has been having. When I was installing it, as I plugged in the USB connection, I got the Blue Screen of Death and my computer crashed. When it rebooted, Windows told me the hardware was not designed for XP and that I should not install it. Hmmm, why then does the box for Instant DVD have the "Designed for Windows XP" logo on it? I went ahead with installing the updated software and drivers anyways. When I tried to preview captured video, I got nothing. A black screen. Could not get it to work or do anything. Tried capturing even without seeing anything in the preview in 2 different programs. After 20 seconds it stopped and told me the file was corrupted. And despite the fact that the unit was doing nothing, every time I had the device plugged in, my computer slowed down, my mouse wouldn't respond, and the programs would crash. So I had even less success with this product than the other reviewers here. I have a month-old computer with all the latest gadgets and gizmos. If this doesn't work with my computer, whose computer does it work with?

Having read the positive review here and hundreds others on another website, I will be trying out the Canopus ADVC-100 (do a search for "Canopus" only if looking on Amazon). If after reading this, you are still considering buying this product, do yourself a favor and shoot yourself in the foot instead. It will more fun and less painful.

Very satisfied with the product.......2007-05-04

First the bad - The minimum system requirement is a total joke. I can't see this really capturing video on a PIII. The ULEAD software works (most of the time), but Windows Movie Maker that comes with Vista is much better.

Now for the good - Video capture works great. Viewing the capture can be a second or two behind the video on the TV, but everything is captured in very good quality. Capture from the DirectTV DVR makes near commercial quality DVDs, even at the lowest bit rate (2.5 Mb/s). Capturing from VHS should be done at a much higher bit rate to (3 or 4 Mb/s) to improve the quality.

I'm looking forward to trying the audio capture, but I need a pre-amp for the turntable.

I have not had a chance to use it yet. The first one received had a rattle in it so it was exchanged for another. This process went very well except I am out the postage for the return. Like I stated, I have not hooked the second one up yet.

OK, I did a ton of research on these items, and this was the one.
I looked at :
Creative Audio Video - did not like that it replaces your soundcard.
Turtle Beach - I liked that it is internal, but heard terrible things about it.

AND ... most of all, *** I wanted something that can do AUDIO as well as VIDEO ***. Most of these type of devices out there only do Video, this does BOTH, and is designed to do both.

Install was a piece of cake, software was a piece of cake (ULead took a bit of learning, but not that bad).

Also gave ADS customer service the test 'before I purchased' as well as 'after', and BOTH times, I got someone quick and knowledgeable.

Oh, by the way ... the negative (and this has nothing to do with the product ... but the computer you hook into ...)
Any of these AUDIO VIDEO devices are CPU hogs. I have a 2.0ghz AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core, and this was peaking at 80% CPU. I feel bad for those fools that are running PII, PIII, even PIV. This type of product NEEDS CPU. If you have anything less than the best, I suggest you look at upgrading your whole system, as you will have problems with this type of unit.

Review after over one year of running perfectly.......2006-08-01

I bought my notebook over a year ago in the US, travelled with my new notebook oversees and even moved back to Germany never having a problem. After a year my only concern is the fact that it runs hot if I am working longer than 8 hours a day with it (university use, programming) but I solved this little problem of mine with an additional fan pad you plug in via USB port. I never had problems with speed, noise, storage or capacity. The start of Windows was slow after a year of usage but I used RegSeeker and now it works like a brand new notebook. It still looks new, no scratches, dents or anything.
I m very satisfied and recommend this product.

Great Value for the Money.......2006-07-27

PROS...
I bought at Sam's 8-25-04 and have had NO PROBLEMS. It does run hot, but I put a plastic kitchen grill drip tray upside down under the back so it gets plenty of air circulation and never had a problem with it overheating. I just upgraded my memory to 2GB and it's still running smoothly.
CONS...
Rubber pads fall off on the bottom, and the battery life is only an hour and half at best. I think it runs a little loud but have nothing to compare it with.
STILL A LOT OF BANG FOR THE BUCK!!

ONE WORD, HORRIBLE.......2005-12-15

Expect substandard customer service and support who treats the customers as if they should just accept the minor defects on a brand new laptop.
Dead dots on the screen are not acceptable but they say it is. The built in wireless is weak. These laptops get very hot, hotter than most laptops should be when running.
All in all, do not spend money on a laptop due to PRICE. You get what you pay for and this is another unknown company that will disappear as many other tech companies have in the past due to poor service and substandard products.

Waste of Money and Worst repair facility.......2005-07-26

I bought it in Nov 2005. In winter it gave me really good performance. But in mid of march because of a little hit it started turning off it self. It has really big problem with over heating. One day smoke was coming from laptop keyboard. Before I react it was burnt out. I sent it back to averatec and they return me after replacing motherboard. It worked perfectly for an hour. As soon as plugged it to chrge battery once again smoke was coming out of it. This time I was fast enough to disconnect AC power supply. Averatec gave me a new RMA and ( and ) Returned my laptop after 1 Month ( 1 whole month) even though I sent it back my self without waiting for free shipping offered by Averatec. After getting it back I have got wired keyboard. Key board is really hard. I am using computer for 8-10 hours in a day from last 6 years. This is the worst keyboard I have ever used. I thought "I will get soft after using for couple of weeks". But I was wrong. I started lossing display. LCD screen started turning off itself and I have to shake it so it comes up again. What a laptop. ( Is it from 80's or before that?)
I don't know what to do with this piece of crap.

Averatec notebooks are a crapshoot.
They are either great or garbage. I managed a really good price on mine and still feel cheated.
Tech supports answer to my issues was "send it back" and this was right out of the box .
Lucky for me my husband is pretty handy with computers and had the problems identified and fixed in about an hour. (replaced memory and optical drive).
His description of this laptop "a desktop crammed into a small case without any ventilation" and some other things I won't put in print . Would I buy another Averatec ? I don't think so .

I have to keep changing the cartridges every 3months even while I use the machine sparingly. I have to compulsorily change the color cartridges, though the black ink cartridge is full. I rarely use color. To top it all, I get the lousy error message Error-41.

I bought this machine thinking I will have a fax machine for some occasional use. I repent buying this. I will never ever buy another Brother machine.

I use my 3220C at home. My experience is if you don't print every day the printer head drys out. I tried to clean the head with water, alcohol etc. and could not repair it. I contacted Brother support and they gave me a Service Center adress 50 miles away. I live in a large city! I bought a new head for $40. Guess what! The head dried out again. I bought a complete new same machine for $99, because thought I must just have gotten a bad one and I also had two spare cartridges sets. Guess what! Man do I feel stupid.

Also, when the cartridges are 2/3 empty. The machine displays the cartridge is emtpy and you can't do anything with the machine until you replace the cartridges. Most of the times you need to replace all cartridges at the same time. God knows why. I'm not using much color! How the heck do the color cartriges run empty all the time?

This product stinks. My suggestion. Do not buy this product, no matter how cheap you can get it.

Reliability.......2004-09-26

Beautiful machine as far as cosmetics, but so is a mercedes.
And of course the high cost of maintenance, namely printer
cartridges. No capability for extra high capacity ink storage
resulting in frequent changes whether machine is used for heavy
or little use. Any fault in system disables all functions.
Sometimes problem cannot be resolved with one color replacement,
so better choice is to replace all colors at the same time which
increases cost of operation.
Disappointed!

Stay Away From Brother MFC Series.......2004-08-05

Buyers beware! I purchased an MFC-3220 just 3 months ago and have used it only as a fax machine printing black only. With previous experience on Epson and HP machines, I thought that i'd never have to replace the color cartridges. Well, it turns out Brother customer support says that air bubbles get into the cartridge and dry them out, even when you're not using them, meaning a $100 cartridge replacement every 3-5 months!

A Call to customer support provided no help whatsoever, but they offered to take my order for new cartridges! Threw the MFC in the trash and picked up an HP.

If you're looking for an MFC, stick to HP. It may cost more, but you'll save a ton of money on refillable cartridges.

do not buy this machine!.......2004-05-22

Even though I only ever print black type, the "head cleaning" process manages to empty ALL of the cartridges (including the 3 color ones) in only a few weeks. They run about $18 each so imagine how much fun that is. The great part is that the machine will not work at all if the color cartridges are empty. What a ripoff! Also the "transport" thing that holds the ink is easily damaged if you move it by hand.

I will probably take a baseball bat to it one of these days. Serenity now!
