Hard to Work around........2006-01-02

I, unlike some of the other reviewers, got the thing to work initially, on an ATI chipset. I just followed the directions. However, having a laptop limited me to onboard sound (which means I had to ghetto-rig the sound output from the tuner), so later on I bought an external sound card to remedy this problem. After plugging it in, and loading it up, I found that I had now had audio and no video! This puzzled me, and knowing that it worked before, I had to keep trying to figure it out. Eventually I did, and I want to share how I got the video back.

My solution is a simple power one. On my USB hub, only a few things are self powered. An external Hard Drive, a MIDI controller, and that's it. Having the keyboard, mouse, AVerMedia, and a sound card plugged into it all sapping power from it (it is self-powered), I figure, caused it to malfunction, hence no rendering of video, or rendering improperly. After routing the sound card directly to my USB, instead of through the hub, the problem went away. My conjecture is then, that in some cases, the black screen may be caused by not enough USB power or a USB surge. Anyway, my two cents. Good to use once you get it going though.

I just returned one of these, having to eat a restocking fee and an evening's worth of serious inconvenience, trying to coax something other than a black screen out of this program. This is the first USB device that I've failed to get to work on my big friendly giant of a PC (Dell P4 3.2GHz, much RAM, cavernous HD, and good quality sound and video cards). Though hardly a card carrying member of the digerati elite, I'm competent enough to generally to work on windows, strongly suggesting the flaws lie with the product, rather than the user. Yes, I know no device is one hundred percent idiot proof, but this device's combination of user-unfriendliness and inadequate drivers this are really a bit much.

I have talked with support guy if ULTRATV USB 300 TV Tuner works with PAL-M systems and the answer was YES. Then because this information I purchase the device. BUT when I receive it doesn't work... ;) and they dont want do nothing about this... unbelievable!!! Is not a serious company...

I bought two of these - one for my computer, one for my girlfriend's computer. She has a Dell 4600 and this product works fine, all day long and she loves it.

In my case, I have a system that runs flawlessly, which I built on a SuperMicro P4SSA motherboard. Nothing crazy, just a good stable system.... that is until the Avermedia arrived. I installed it and suddenly my system was locking up every day while watching TV. It's a shame too, because the USB 300 TV tuner is very nicely made and the software control panel thing is good overall.

After talking to Avermedia, they suggested I upgrade to the latest version of their software and drivers. Okay, no problem... that is if you like solving puzzles. Their instructions for removing the old drivers and software is nuts.. you have to jump through all sorts of crazy steps to get the new software installed - why I don't know, but I assume it's because of some lazy programmer in India or China. What happened to just "updating" something.

I finally got the new version installed and find out that not only does it still lock up, but the new software has errors in it... specifically, it no longer remembers where you set the video settings (such as brightness, color levels, etc) - hello? does anyone test this stuff before shipping it? I contacted the company about this and reported the problem.. their attitude was "we doubt this is an error, but we'll look into it"... yeah, okay... try it yourself.

I re-installed Windows XP pro from scratch and installed their software (the 2nd version off their website) again just to make sure it wasn't some odd conflict with the 1st version - sure enough, the software fails to write the settings to the registry correctly - you can even see where it's writing it in two places. So I reported this again to Avermedia and their response was that they would report it to the head office in China and as soon as an update was available, it would be posted on their website... maybe 2 weeks they guy said. Okay, it's been about 5 months, still nothing. When I contact them after 3 months of waiting, it's all about "gee, sorry, we haven't heard anything from China on that yet, but if we get an update it will be posted". Great thanks.

Another big problem was that if you run two monitors and extend your desktop to a 2nd or 3rd monitor, you can forget about using this product on anything but the main monitor. If you drag it across to an extended monitor, the application goes over there, but there is no video in the box any longer - Avermedia knows about the problem but has no intention on fixing it as far as I can tell - thanks again guys... be sure to high five the programmers in China for me.

Maybe I was expecting too much.. like a product that actually came with working software... I don't know. Like I say, it works great on my girlfriend's Dell, so I guess if you own a Dell, then you are in fat city. However, for the rest of us, it's hit or miss and from what I have read on-line from other people using this product, it's mainly miss. BTW, a word to the wise, if you are using this tuner, avoid the temptation to upgrade the software to the release on the website (at least the 7/2004 one) because it has bugs and there appears to be no rush to fix them on Avermedia's side.

Maybe in 2006 they will get around to updating the software and I can watch TV again on my PC...

This product is garbage, I did not have a problem with the audio like other users have, I just did not get any video. I installed it on two different computers an had the same problem. It just does not work. I called tech support and after waiting 15 mins for support, the tech guy was a moron. After he had me reinstalled drivers and unplugged all my USB devies, ect, he still couldnt get it to work. WHen I told him I live in Germany, he told me I had to call the HQ Germany office and that I had the US Drivers (even though the drivers on the German page are the same as on the US page, I only called the US helpline because they speak english, which by the wasy, was not toll free.) Anyways, if it worked, it would probabily be a great product. But, it doesn't work. If you do buy this produact after reading all these reviews, expect to return it, asI am tomorrow.

I bought my MFC-620CN fax machine about 10 months ago. I use it only as a fax machine (it's not hooked up to my computer). I have two major problems with this machine:
1. It prints extremely slow, even when it's printing just black ink.
2. It's wasteful with regard to ink cartridges! Yesterday, after receiving one page of a 3-page fax, the LCD said the black ink cartridge was empty and that the other three cartridges were all low! Ok, so I lift the top and pop out the black cartridge and low and behold, there's still ink in there!!! Plenty of ink. I check the other three cartridges and they are all at least 1/3 full (if they come completely filled when new--more if not completely full when new)! I tried reinserting the cartridges and unplugging it so it could reset, but no go. It will not print until I replace 4 perfectly good ink cartridges. I even went to the Brother website for help...if I'm still having problems, I can take it into a local service center (the nearest one being 19 miles away!). With gas prices what they are, what a waste! Oh, the cost of 4 new ink cartridges...$52.59!

Save your money...buy HP products. You decide when to change the cartridge, not the manufacturer.

I did have to give it 4 stars because it really does a lot for the price and size. The telephone answering machine and phone were nice to have right on my desk. At least one message every day was cut off though. The printer seemed to work just fine, but I had a lot of trouble with the ink--saying it was empty when it wasn't, or that the cover was open when it wasn't. The cyan and magenta print heads just stopped working one day so I switched to greyscale. Now that the yellow is out it will not print at all. It has slots for all sizes of flash and memory cards on the front, that was really nice for my digital camera (for downloading to PC). The copier/scanner worked either as a flatbed or multisheet feeder. The menu was hard to figure out. I kept the pdf of the manual on my desktop. The copy center on the PC never worked right, but I just used the TWAIN support in my programs to import the scans. Even though I had a lot of problems with this printer, I'll miss it.

All together I am very happy with the choice I've made. I haven't been using it for long but so far so good! For me as a small business owner this has been the perfect choice.

We've only had this for about a month, but so far so good. Black & white text comes out looking like a laser printer and the speed isn't too far behind one either. Color looks great, but obviously you wouldn't want to use this to print photos. The user's manual is probably the biggest flaw but once you figure out how to use the thing, that becomes irrelevant. For the price, you can't beat it.
