As webcams go, the iSight provides the best image quality. Its design and build quality are top notch, too. The iSight uses a Firewire connection, not USB, for improved performance.

The camera comes with four different mounting devices (stands and clips) to use it on a desktop, atop your monitor, or attached to your notebook computer's LCD screen. Another thoughtful touch is a little cylinder to store/protect the iSight when you take it on the road.

The iSight has two internal noise-cancelling microphones that provide crisp, clear audio. The folks with whom I videoconference have remarked that I sound like I'm in the same room as they.

One area where the iSight could be improved is control over manual adjustments. The camera normally works in auto mode. The aperature, focus, color temperature, video gain, et cetera, are adjusted automatically based on the room's lighting conditions. But I've found that there are times when the picture is a bit too dark or too bright, or the hue is a tad too red or blue. Fortunately, there's a cool $8 shareware utility called iGlasses (do a Google search to find it) that gives you full manual control over the camera. iGlasses appears as a floating pallete within iChat AV. With it, you can tweak the iSight's settings to your personal preference.

The iSight and iChat AV go hand in hand. I can't imagine using one without the other.

I bought one of these for my dad for xmas and another one for myself (adhering to the one for you one for me policy). We both live on different continents and I figure it would help to cut down on phone bills. Tried it out for the first time this weekend and I'm impressed. The resolution is quite good; not crystal clear of course but not too bad (we both have cable modems). It was easy to set up, just involved getting a subscription to the .mac website (free trial 60 days, no need to put a credit card down either!), plugging it in, and typing my dad's email address as a buddy...that's it...next thing I knew he was on the screen talking with me. Pretty sweet.

I have owned this webcam for a few months now and love it. I have kids in college and we video conference frequently. The sound and picture are worth the money. Apple makes this easy to install; plug it in. AIM is our software along with the Ichat-AV version. The pictures are clear and have no time delay. This is my third webcam purchase and by far my favorite. I even bought another one for the office. This is the Porsche of webcams. Can't someone help the poor Wintel folks have a real webcam. Is this Mac only or will it become like the Ipod, for all platforms?

Video quality is excellent. The firewire connection and dsl or broadband provides some of the fastest responses in video casting with very, very little jerkyness. We recently had a video conference with our son and daughter-in-law from the birthing room in California after the birth of our granddaughter. Both of us were using PowerMacs and isight webcams. The video quality was great and I was able to take good digital photos of the baby directly from the screen. It was a great experience.

The connection was simple with ichat and AIM. I've also used it with gmail and skype with excellent results. I've used other video cameras of various quality, but the isight lens, auto focus, contrast and other features are the best I've seen. Firewire solves a lot of problems for both quality and data transmission/reception. It's very close to a real time, in the room experience.

I thought the cost was a little steep when I bought this unit a year ago, but the product is top quality and well worth the price.

Ive had my averatec computer for a year now and it's been very reliable and worth every penny. It's a great computer...very fast. It's also very light so I can easily carry it everywhere and it's great to be able to do my work on my balcony at sunset. I highly recommend this computer. I've given this a 4 star instead of a 5 because I did have some slight problems with the internal wireless card and had to call the customer service. They were fairly helpful but it was a little annoying to have to call them. The bottom of the laptom does get a little hot and the fan is a little louder than other lap tops but you get use to it and it doesn't hinder me from my work.

great deal on a compact notebook.......2004-10-09

This is a great notebook. I bought it because of the size, and I really enjoy it. I have big hands, but have no problem managing the keyboard. The unit performs well, I've had it 3 months and no hardware problems yet. Looks nice too. I work with a lot of Mac afficionados, and the Averatec gets a lot of approving looks from these folks who are used to dissing PCs on case design. The screen is bright and clear.

I primarily use the machine for running productivity apps (MS Office, OneNote), text file editing (I'm a programmer), internet browsing, reading PDFs, and VNC to other boxes.

On the downside, the speakers are terrible, but I knew that before I bought it and don't use it for much multimedia.

Customer support is available and answered the phone quickly, but in my experience they were unknowlegeable. I was having problems connecting to my home wireless network, so I called them to ask whether there was a software switch or something to enable the built-in wi-fi initially. A couple of different techs told me that the internal wi-fi card was broken and I'd have to return it. I wasn't buying this and did some more testing on my own and it turns out my old NetGear wifi router just wasn't up to snuff. Replaced my router (with another NetGear - that was a mistake but that's another story) and the internal wifi works fine at my house now and everywhere else I've tried it.

Great buy for anyone who wants a compact notebook and wants the most for their money. My only regret is that I didn't spend a couple hundred more and buy the tablet convertible.

Avoid Averatec.......2004-09-13

I bought an Averatec 3150H notebook in January. The first one had defective battery and I returned it. The replacement had problems with screen, I sent it in for repairs and it stayed in their repair shop for over two months waiting for parts! By July, the keyboard would stop working whenever the machine had been on for a half hour. Averatec's product quality is inferior and their service is non-existent. Don't waste your money on this brand.

Small, light and economical.......2004-09-10

It is a great priced notebook except few things.

It heats up at the bottom, the fan is at the bottom, therefore you have to place something under it, coolpad will be the best.

The keyboard is difficult to adjust, number keys are very small, deletion is at the top right, Shift is at very far right therefore every time I press up arrow. I bought an external keyboard but it is not convenient every time. Control key is not on the left corner.

Except that is great for many applications, previous reviewer complained about DVD sound, DVD sound is set by default to confortable setting, you can change that setting and have loud and great sound.

Few times it booted itself, I don't know if is software or hardware problem. Battery life is not so great arund 2 hr.

DVD plays flawlessly. Wireless is great and easy to use, just press a button.

Want a cheap and lightweigt, I may recoomend (except keyboard, if it would bother you, don't buy it)

Getting Sirius on the road..........2005-12-10

After spending several months listening to my Sirius radio at home, I decided to take the show on the road with the help of this particular accessory. The set-up was fairly simple, primarily 'cuz I opted against mounting the car dock to the dashboard. This was due mainly to the fairly heavy static I encountered when I put the set-up near any part of the car radio. Also, I couldn't find a particularly stable spot on the dash to lash it to.

Even in the "prime" position the car dock's presently in, however, I still encounter a miniscule amount of static & hiss on rare occasions. This is especially so in a few remote, higher-altitude areas around where I live, where the weak signal of the station occupying the FM frequency I've got my car dock's transmitter set to would bleed through a little bit. Fortunately, this is a mild inconvenience at worst.

(On a few occasions I've used a cassette adapter rather than the FM transmitter to listen in. Sadly, the clarity of the sound via the adapter wasn't quite up to that of the transmitter.)

Anyhoo: after driving through everything from the concrete jungle of downtown through the 'burbs to a few remote back roads out in the sticks, I was fairly impressed by the performance I got out of the car dock and its accompanying antenna. Speaking of the antenna: I dare say it picks up the satellite signal even better than the one that came with my home dock. In fact, one particular advantage the car-dock antenna has over the home-dock version is that it doesn't act up quite so much in adverse weather conditions. The only problem spots in the way of signal-stoppage are in the aforementioned remote back roads with a fair deal of overhead vegetation, through tunnels, under highway overpasses, and downtown parking garages. Also, areas with lots of overhead telephone/power lines & power transformers can cause interference with the satellite signal and/or the FM transmitter's signal. You know, the usual over-the-air audio obstacles. In this respect, satellite radio is a lot like AM: you get inside or very close to any sort of concrete and/or steel enclosure, you might as well forget about hearing anything from the danged thing. But at least it just stops making any kind of sound when it goes out, instead of annoying audio "snow."

Unfortunately, the antenna isn't particularly durable. Each end of the wire-- where it connects to the magnetic receiver unit and the radio plug-in jack, respectively-- pulled away from the insulation when I bent them just the slightest bit during my initial attempt at installation. Fearing further damage, I shored these exposed ends up with some electrical tape to cover the wire-ends back up, as well as keeping them from bending too much. So far, the antenna has held together quite well without needing any further "quick fixes", although it doesn't look quite as nice as it used to. Well, actually it wasn't all that nice-looking to begin with. All the same, the electrical tape doesn't help matters...

UPDATE 12/28/2005: Despite my best efforts, the plug-end of the car dock's factory antenna finally gave up the ghost a few weeks back after being bent at a 90-degree angle a little too long. I replaced it with the Directed Electronics ultra low-profile car antenna (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000COZ0XG), which features a right-angled plug, and picks the satellite signal up a bit better than its predecessor did. I've also found a good spot on the dash to attach the car dock to, and the reception couldn't be better... for the most part.

Saved me from a driving nightmare........2005-07-24

So here is the deal. I'm a converted radio listener that never thought they would pay for radio. I had the PNP, the home kit and 2 boomboxes. However, I never really thought I would use a car kit.

So we get ready to take a vacation and guess what, we are travelinig through Wyoming and South Dakota. Yep, you read correctly. FM wasteland baby! I suffered a 6 hour drive without the car kit. Ordered it off of Amazon and had it overnighted to my hotel room. That's right; overnighted! The trip home was way more tolerable with my Sirius.

I didn't have any FM problems, but that's because those states don't have any FM stations worth listening to. ;)

Great adapter for those of us who bought early! I'm just really ticked off they don't make these kits adaptable to all models. Now these are becoming impossible to find.

I tried the FM output option 1st, however I live near a major city and although it has 4 output stations (yes - only 4) - 88.1, 88.3, 88.5 and 88.7 - there are 2 strong stations near me that are on 88.1 and 88.5 which pretty much made the FM option a "non" option due to lots of interference.

The unit comes with an Aux port hookup, but my stereo is the one that came with the car from the manufacturer (Toyota) and does not have an aux "in". You can get an FM attenuator installed by a professional that acts as a bypass to the FM antenna, but from all the reviews I've read on those - they still won't work as well as a direct hookup (tape or aux port).

I broke down and bought a tape adapter for $15 and now it sounds great!

first of all.. it aint compatible w/windows xp and even if by some miracle you got it to work ,it only uses the version 1 pcmcia card which belkin dont make anymore.! man what a nightmare.! luckily I only paid 10 bucks +$5 s/h and was able to pawn it for the same amount THANK GOD so my advice is try another route.

Well, I bought this thing knowing that I had a version 1 Belkin PCMCIA card. I installed the PCI card and STILL got an error signal. IT turns out that EVEN among the Version 1 PCMCIA cards, there are some that will not function with the PCI adapter. Supposedly, Belkin labeled some wrong and some nonfunctional ones got mixed into the batch. Although it took forever to get a solution from Tech Support, they were nice enough to send me a brand new PCMCIA card that WOULD work with the PCI adapter. Perhaps my only suggestion with this product and any PCMCIA to PCI adapter is to do your research VERY IN DEPTH, because in this case you have to cross the T's and dot the I's to know for sure that this product will work!

I agree, this is a piece of crap, and doesn't work with XP. Belkin also doesn't have any updates or fixes on their website. And I still haven't received my $20 rebate for purchasing this thing from Office Max, and that was nearly a year ago. In fact, I don't think I've ever received a rebate for things I purchased at Office Max, but it is hard to say for certain, because their advertised rebate specials are never in stock.

On the flipside, the laptop card works fine.

Okay adapter - but not a PCI-PCMCIA bridge.......2003-10-06

I bought this thinking that it was a generic PCMCIA - PCI bridge...so I could use any pcmcia card in it. However it uses firmware that only works with the belkin 802.11b pcmcia card. You can't upgrade your wireless and you can't use it for modems or other pcmcia cards...it does what it says but nothing more.
