CHEAP Ink Cartridges.......2007-09-08

In addition to all of the other "Kudos" awarded to this printer by the other reviewers, I want to add the following. While the price of "Genuine Canon" ink cartridges may (does) border on outright robbery, you DON'T have to buy them. Compatible cartridges are dirt cheap at places like "inkquik.com". If you buy a refill kit from say, "abcink.com", you can refill your own for pennies each. I do, they are VERY easy to refill, work as good as new, and canon even gives you a "Reset Ink Level" option under the print driver "maintenance" section. YAY Canon -- DOWN for HP !!!!

Planned Obsolescence.......2006-02-09

As a road warrior, I bought the i70 to replace my old Canon BJC-85, and to use with my Powerbook G4. On the plus side, it is fast and prints reasoably good text, and very good photos if you use photo paper. The black ink tank could be bigger, but that is a minor issue. It is the smallest printer of its type that I have seen.

The real problem is that at a certain point, you will have to replace the waste ink tank, something that I did not have to do with previous Canon printers. This is not something you can do yourself; you must send or take the printer to an authorized service facility, and pay around $115 for the replacement. That is equal to half of what I paid for the printer approximately 2 years ago. And if you ignore the warning light, the printer will just quit on you in the middle of an important print job.

Cannon says that as a "loyal" customer, they will give you a discount on a new printer, instead of replacing the waste ink tank, however, they will not tell you what that discount is up front. Further, a tech at the service facility told me the newer models, such as the i80 and ip90 have the same flaw engineered into the product. Seems like Canon has decided their authorized service facilities are more important than their customers.

I wrote to Canon, and received the reply that my comments would be directed to the appropriate person. I hope so.

Small & Convenient.......2005-12-06

I had this printer for about a year and had no complaints whatsoever. Ink can get a bit pricey but there's always Cartridge World who will refill both tanks for $18. I am on the road a lot and the size is extremely convenient, put it in your bag, get it out in the hotel, and boom, you got yourself a small office. Highly recommended. Hint: It's quite sensitive so don't put it in a bag that you'll check @ the airport. I did that for the 1st time last week, and when I plugged it I had an "out of paper" error even tough the tray was full. Through some research I found out that through bag checkout they had bent a piece that senses for paper, so I just bent it back and the problem was gone!

Great Quality but wastes a ton of Ink.......2004-12-19

I have had this little baby for over 1 year now and have no complaints what so ever about the print quality.
For a little printer, the quality is stunning.
I also bought the battery pack so printing on the go from a laptop is simple. The battery pack has provided more than enough life, lasting more than my laptop's battery.

The one complaint: very poor Mac OS X software. I mean very poor. Mac users aren't used to being asked to confirm dumb questions multiple times like PC users are.

For example, there are 2 menu options to access settings regarding the ink levels and neither of them are clear.
If you choose: Ink Level Information why should you have to click 'update?' Shouldn't the software update the information before displaying it? This is like one of those annoying PC Wizards that ask you the same question multiple times.
The other choice regarding ink is "Remaining ink level setting'
Unfortunately you have to reset the ink level settings manually...a major annoyance and inconvenience. This is done by clicking the obvious Ink Counter Rest Button in the Remaining ink level setting screen. But why is there a Remaining Ink Level Indicator Setting button? There is another menu option that displays the current ink level so what's this for? Whatever it does, it sends some message to the printer. Maybe an ink level setting reset? If so, then shouldn't the other button have done it already? Are you getting confused? see what I mean!?
Who knows. It is just stupid and confusing.
The ink level indicators are almost never right anyway, so be prepared to have to change ink cartriges in a trial and error fashion when your print quality doesn't seem right.

As a matter of fact, when there is something wrong with your print quality, don't expect the Print Utility to be much help at all.
For example, When you choose "Cleaning" there is a button that says -Cleaning: Starts print head cleaning.' What do you think will happen when you click this?
Nope. It gives you an option with check boxes: All Colors, Black, or Color. then an 'OK' button. So you have chosen the colors you want to clean and click 'ok' so what do you think will happen now?
Instead of the printer beginning to clean the heads, you are given an alert box that Asks "Clean the Print Head?" and you have to click 'OK' again.

Geeez..... talk about annoying! Just clean the damn heads already!!!! The softweare doesn't seem to know it was written for Mac OS X and not Windows.

It's a shame the software is soooo bad, because this is otherwise a really great printer.

If you get this printer, you will love the photos, but be prepared to spend a lot of $$ on ink and get a little frustrated when you need to use the utility.

I've had this printer for 9 months and its been great. 2 complaints: it runs out of ink quickly and the ink for this printer is expensive; 2) there is no paper catch.

The Canon LR1 provides WebTV users with a sleek, color printing device that's easy to install and fits well with other components of a home theater system. Because it's about the same size and shape as a VCR, it slips easily into a standard audio/video rack or cabinet. All the major controls are located on the easily accessible front panel.

The LR1 doesn't need any special software if you're connecting it to a WebTV system, but to test it with a PC we had to download drivers from Canon's website. Otherwise, the printer comes with everything you'll need to get up and running, including a bidirectional printer cable, a power supply, and ink tanks. Even novice users should have the device installed in less than 10 minutes, thanks to the clearly written documentation and the huge, full-color quick-start poster.

In our tests of the Canon LR1, we were able to produce some nice text, but color performance suffered compared to better color ink jets we've worked with. The 720 x 360 resolution appears to be more of a marketing gimmick than a truly useful print mode, as the print quality was comparable to ordinary 360 x 360 resolution ink-jet printers. The text wasn't as sharp as it should have been, but it was still legible at even small font sizes. Complex color graphics also suffered from less-than-expected quality.

The quality of photograph printouts was wholly dependent on the type of paper we used. We saw terrible results on plain paper but observed some nice images when we used high-grade glossy paper that was specifically designed for ink jets. The LR1's biggest drawback is its slow speed. Plain text pages were produced at anywhere from two to four pages per minute, but when color was involved, the printer took up to a full minute for a single page.

If you do only light-volume printing from the Web, the LR1 is an acceptable solution, but for high-volume or high-quality printing, there are many options that are faster, cheaper, and have better specifications. If only the print quality and price matched the ease of use, this would be an ideal solution for WebTV users needing printouts. --T. Byrl Baker

The LR1 print station is just great!!Have had it a few months and no probs.Not only is it easy to use, hook up and load..but you DO NOT have to clean the print heads. It is done automatically.The printing quality is very good for a set top box printer although it can also be used with a computer. The ink is not as expensive as it is for other similar printers. Also using decent quaility paper produces nice results. Matter of fact Canon does not recommend use of special coated paper for printing which is more expensive.The LR1 is sleekly sized and very good looking. NOT another dragon-sized piece of equipment that will add UGLY to your home :)I am VERY pleased with this product!!! (Nowadays it is difficult to say this about most things on the market since they are poorly/carelessly manufactured.) Thank you Canon!!

I bought this TV for my husband four months ago, so now it is out of warranty. We have had problems with it right from the start that we have always been able to fix but now it is completely unusable. I emailed tech support with our current problem and they told me in order to fix it it has to be sent in. The cost for this is $135, almost the purchase price. So basically, we bought a TV for four months and now we need a new one.

I purchased the VE700 about a year and a half ago and mounted it under a cabinet in our kitchen next to the computer. I LOVE it. I agree, its not ideal for walk around viewing but for working on the computer and not missing your favorite shows, its ideal. My sis in law saw it and bought one which she mounted in her computer armoire. She loves it too. It takes up no space and folds out of the way. For the money, I think its a good buy. Spend 3-5 times as much to get one you can see across the kitchen I guess.

Disappointed.......2005-05-18

I purchased this as a gift to my wife to replace the clock radio we currently have in the kitchen. Mounting the unit was simple enough. Connecting up to my cable system seemed to work, but the viewing angle for the TV seems pretty limited and the sound was not very good. I connected the FM radio antenna and the reception and sound quality for the radio was terrible. Our old clock radio was much better. I also don't like the fact that the TV always comes on when you turn on the power - I might like to go straight to the radio, but that doesn't appear to be an option. I should have heeded the reviews I read stating this product is flakey. I guess the technology for this type of thing just isn't ready for prime time yet. I returned the unit.

You will need an extended warranty!.......2004-09-17

We purchased this item about 8 months ago and now it is completely broken. The TV no longer works and the speakerphone never worked properly. They only offer a 90 day warranty so... out of luck! I suggest waiting until the technology is better or getting an extended warranty if you can. Wish I had...

Great Tripod... with small problem.......2007-08-27

I bought this tripod from Adorama (through Amazon) and the box arrived damaged. The tripod seemed to be in good shape except for the center column. The column itself was fine, but the internal screw holding the low angle adaptor was bent and the adaptor wobbles out when it is released. When the low angle adaptor is fully seated in the column, it's firmly in place. I sent it back to get a replacement and the second one has the same "defect." Is this normal for this tripod? Other than this small problem, the tripod works great: has 4 leg angles to achieve low angle shots, center column is removeable and can be re-mounted horizontally, and overall it's very well built.

I never understood why people paid more than 20 bucks for a tripod. One will hold a camera in place as well as any other....right? Not quite. I had a "good" $40 tripod but the more I got into photography, the more limited I felt by my tripod. I couldn't arrange really low shots because the tripod didn't go that low. I couldn't shoot directly downward the way I wanted to. The tripod was rickety when I positioned the camera (along with flash bracket, and flash) into portrait mode, and it didn't hold it in the exact position I was looking for. And with the weight of the camera, flash bracket, and flash I always felt that the tripod was about to tip over, or break, or that it just wasn't secure enough, especially in portrait (thus also limiting my framing options). So I finally got this tripod and a ball head. After my first shoot with this tripod I was in love. It's rock-solid sturdy and versatile. I can lower the camera to within inches of the ground. The center pole can be mounted horizontally enabling me to mount the camera pointing down. In general I feel more confident and more secure shooting with this tripod.
I use it with the Bogen-Manfrotto 322RC2 Horizontal Grip Action Ball Head, which I fiddled with once at a camera store and fell in love with. Whatever tripod you get, use that ball head with it. It's expensive, but it's bloody amazing! If you can't afford it, save up until you can. It's that good. And I'd say the same thing about this tripod. It's expensive when you consider what it's used for (holding your camera). But it's worth every penny when you consider what it DOES...empowers you to take better pictures, and enables you to really experiment with your creativity. And its so sturdy that you also get peace of mind when you have your camera mounted on it. So with this tripod as well, if you can't afford it, save up until you can. Worth every dime!
The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because removing the center vertical bar requires unscrewing the bottom bolt, separating the mast from the top part that holds the head. Once that part is off, you can slide the mast off of the tripod, and mount it horizontally, then you have to re-screw the head brace back onto the mast, and then mount your camera. It's really easy to do! Not complicated in the least, and doesn't require tools. Just takes about a minute. But it's kind of a process when you want to quickly switch to horizontal. Considering how quickly and easily everything else on the tripod works, the process of un-mounting and remounting that center mast is pretty ridiculous. It'd be better if there were a switch or a pressure-knob that let you quickly flip the mast to horizontal and re-secure it without having to unmount and remount it. Manfrotto does make a tripod with this ability, but it was out of my price range. But still, it's not a deal-breaker for me. This tripod is probably the best investment I've made in photography. Who woulda thunk it?

It's a pretty good tripod. Stable and easy to use. I have a 486rc ballhead to go with it. Its a tad bit heavier than I expected it to be, but its bearbable. It is capable of going at low angles and the bar can be places in a horizontal position which is good for macro shots.

It does it's job, perfect weight and is very flexible. Haven't found anything I would change with it. I use it with a Markins M10 and it's flawless :)
