Customer Reviews:
Sturdy little fellow.......2003-05-08
I have absolutely loved this printer. It carried me through 3 years of school without constantly running to the computer lab to print drafts of papers. It handles a very high volume well.
I have also found that by ordering off-brand ink tanks I can save a lot of money. Frankly, if you buy the Canon, HP or whatever manufacturer's ink, you're really being bilked out of a lot of money.
I'm selling my printer because, like many of you have found out, it is not XP compatible. That's very clearly stated on the box. A manufacturer has no obligation to provide you with new drivers because you didn't read the printer information before upgradning your computer. If you're running an older OS and plan on doing so for a while this is a great little printer. It comes with my highest recommendation!
Great printer for the money.......2003-01-15
I own two of these machines and I have to admit I am a fan of Canon products. I also own their digital camera and copy machine. For the money it is hard to complain about this printer. It delivers nice crisp text at a very acceptable speed and can do some really nice things with digital images using their photo cartridge. If you buy cartridges for this machine at your neighborhood office supply, you could complain that it can be expensive to run. I personally used compatibles that I purchase on the internet and use a refill kit on the larger tank in holder two. This really makes the machine economical. The fact is that if you use a manufacturer's ink on any machine, you will pay a premium price. That's how they make their money. The larger format ability of this machine is also a bonus considering the low cost to initially acquire.
Pick something else.......2003-01-08
I have the Canon 5000 and the 5100. Both are essentially the same printers, except for its parallel port protocol. If you have Win95 or Win98, then this is a decent printer. This series of printers' use a proprietary printing language, so getting third party support or moving this printer to another platform/OS is out.
It does print on multiple paper formats, and is very good at printing photo grade images, but is very lousy at letter sized envelops. Not a very robust printer, especially when the print cartridges are hard to find and expensive. For the cost of two cartridges you can get another new Canon BJC-5100 printer.
These printers are also "Win printers"
BUT, they do support "HP Laserjet II" protocol. Its undocumented, but all laser printers and Jet Ink printers support this. So if you need to use it on a machine that it is not compatible on, then at least you can print in black.
Look at HP products, they have better support and cartridges are a lot cheaper.
Falling Out Of Love.......2002-09-10
I have owned my BJC5100 for just under 2 years. Maybe not even. Now that I have a new PC, I find that it is not supported by the Windows XP drivers. Canon, doesn't support it on these drivers either. I have tried a few tricks to get it to be recognized, and to print, but have only succeeded in becoming frustrated. Especially when it sits there like a...paperweight.
I love my little BJC5100. Unfortunately this love affair has to end. Fortunately, the printer will be gifted to a young relative who will be able to use it. This I find much better than sending it to a scrap heap.
As far as a review of the printer: well, you have to see it for yourself. It prints in brilliant, crisp colors, professional looking black type, and, newspaper quality grayscale. To own one IS to love one.
canon bjc-5100.......2002-08-02
this printer was obsolete the day i bought it about 2 years ago. when you turn it on or submit a print job it beeps, clicks and whirs for abour two minutes before it ieven begins to print.
it is very tempermental and if you push any buttons before it is finished clicking and whirring (there are long silent gaps so be sure it's finished)it locks up your whole computer. this is with windows 98. i was told by a canon technician that it was not designed for w 98 or higher.
the printing is tempermental and slow. i am sorry i bought it and now that mine is broken i will go to the top of a tall building and drop it off the roof.

Amazon.com Product Description
Adding power to its stylish Exilim line, Casio's Exilim Pro EX-P600 offers advanced features that will please both photographic pros and advanced amateurs. The compact EX-P600 has a refined stainless steel body design, 6-megapixel resolution, 4x optical zoom, ultra-fast 0.01-second shutter release lag time, large 2-inch LCD monitor, and a wide range of manual controls to help you get just the right image.
Optics and Resolution
With the EX-P600, you can capture images in resolutions up to 2816 x 2112 pixels; other resolution modes include 2048 x 1536, 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960, and 640 x 480. It also has a 2816 x 1872 (3:2 aspect ratio) mode. In addition to JPEG capture, images can also be recorded directly from the CCD to TIFF format to avoid any degradation of picture quality.
This lens features a high-performance Canon 4x optical zoom lens with 10-stage aperture settings. It also has a 4x digital zoom, for a total 16x zoom. The lens has an automatic barrier for protection, and can be used in conjunction with the three optional Canon conversion lenses (X 0.7 / X 1.5 / close-up) to increase the camera's flexibility.
Movie Mode
In addition to still images, the EX-P600 can also capture video clips with audio at 320 x 240 pixels. The length of your movie is only limited by the size of memory available (either internal RAM or external memory card).
More Features
In addition to a start-up time of approximately 2-seconds and approximately 0.01 second release time lag, the EX-P600 has a high-speed continuous shutter function to take 3 photos per second--up to 6 photos in succession.
By pressing the shutter button once, you can use the auto bracketing function to take either 3 or 5 photos, applying different effects to each one. In addition to exposure variation (AEB), white balance (WBB), and focus positioning (AFB), the Multi Bracketing feature also enables you to choose variations of color, portrait, sharpness, saturation, and contrast levels, letting you pick the very best shot.
The camera's photographic information, such as shutter speed, aperture, and focusing can be displayed graphically on the 2-inch, high-definition LCD monitor (115,200 pixels), making it easy to quickly adjust settings manually. By pressing the EX Button, the levels for white balance, ISO sensitivity, metering, and AF area settings can be displayed and adjusted on a single screen.
Other features include:
- Convenient wireless remote control is included for slow shutter and self-timer photos
- External flash equipment can be used with the Sync Terminal
- Photos taken with the camera in a sideways position are automatically displayed upright thanks to a built-in horizontal/vertical position sensor
Direct Printing
The EX-P600 is PictBridge compatible, which enables you to transfer pictures from your digital camera to your printer, without a PC or image-editing software. All PictBridge devices share three basic features: camera-to-printer connecting, single-image printing, and uniform error messages (in case something goes wrong)
Storage and Transfer
Images can be stored in the built-in 9 MB memory, or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1 connectivity, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.
Power and Size
The camera is powered by a proprietary, rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included). It measures 3.84 x 2.66 x 1.78 inches (1.03 inches at thinnest point) and weighs 7.94 ounces (excluding battery)
What's in the Box
This package contains the Exilim Pro EX-P600 digital camera, lithium-ion rechargeable battery, battery carger, card remote control, USB and A/V cables, strap, and CD-ROM with image editing software.
Product Description
Includes Casio EX-P600 Exilim Pro camera Lithium Ion rechargeable battery; Battery charger; Card remote control; USB cable; AV cable; Strap; CD-ROM.
Customer Reviews:
Great great camera.......2005-01-08
I love this thing!
I am a first-time digital camera buyer and really a novice to photography. I wanted to find a camera that wasn't to big and that was most importantly easy to use. When researching my purchase I made the decision to obtain a camera that has a larger than 3X Optical Zoom - this narrows down the list considerablely.
It came down to the Casio P600, Fuji E550, and Pentax Optio SV. I loved the compact size of the Optio and its 5X zoom. What killed it for me was it's painfully slow shutter lag. This may not bother some, but it really got to me.
The Fuji E550 is a great camera (very fast), but ultimately there were a couple of things I did not like. One was the fact that it only has a maximum 3 sec shutter exposure. I think this is really sad. If not for this, I would have bought it. The other is that the interface, much like the Pentax takes some deciphering.
This is why I bought the Casio. From the moment I picked it up, it felt comfortable. All of the buttons are where they should be. Everything is very very intuitive. I STILL haven't cracked the manual and I feel very confident that I know how to work almost all of the functions. Being a novice to digital photography, I did not know what the different icons meant, what the differnt options could do. If it isn't obvious from the Casio's excellent interface, it explains it for you! Don't know what a faster shutter speed will do for your picture? Don't worry, the P600 will show you an example.
There are 25 best scene modes (most are pretty gimmicky), but all are well explained on the large 2" screen. It has a 60 second maximum shutter opening resulting in some eye-popping night time and low light images. Add this is a great burst mode (continous is a bit slow clocking in at just under one per second, but the hi-speed is really great firing off as many as 6 images in two seconds)
Battery life is also great. The first two days I had the camera the screen was on constantly as I was perusing the menus, exploring the different options and reviewing pictures. I didn't have to recharge until the end of the 2nd day.
In short, the P600 has an excellent interface, sturdy design, intuitive controls. The only negatives for me were an awkward off-center tripod mount, and the unusual bulging lens that made packing and unpacking the camera from its carrying case (sold separately) a bit clunky.
All in all a really great camera.
BEST DIGITAL CAMERA OUT THERE!.......2005-01-01
I am an advanced amateur photographer who uses a Hasselblad and a large format Wista. I had previously owned a Canon Powershot S100 which was ok but I found the battery life was terrible. I carried 4 batteries with me at all times to make it through one day. When I found the Casio Exilim I was so impressed, as time has gone by I am more impressed. I rarely have to charge the battery and I take hundreds of pictures and videos with it. I never worry that the battery will die in the middle of an event. I use a 1GB SD card which allows me almost one hour of video. It takes incredible photos, professional quality yet is still small enough to carry in my bag. The preset settings are fun to use and I have created some beautiful portraits. The menus are extremely user friendly even if you don't want to read the manual. It has a solid feel to it and even comes with a remote control. It is in my opinion the best compact digial camera on the market...
Now they have a 7MP version which gives you even more detail.

Leader of the pack!.......2004-07-24
I would be classified as an advanced amateur. The P600 is my second digicam. I use a Nikon D100 for serious work, shoot in the RAW mode, edit on a color profiled monitor with Photoshop and print on a 6 color photo printer. I've owned 5 digicams over the last 8 years-none were perfect. There is always a trade-off when seeking portability, lens quality, speed, feature, ruggedness, low noise and resolution. At this time the CASIO P600 is the leader: 6 megapixels, 4x optical zoom high quality Canon lens, small size in a rugged body, quick startup, good ergonomics, big (2inches) viewing screen, unlimited movie mode, advanced menus and extensive features etc. This is the best compact digicam I've owned to date. Drawbacks: CASIO's somewhat spotty reputation for service, lack of a printed manual, relatively small amount of on-board memory, expensive proprietary battery (many others have this problem viz: Nikon, Canon etc.), limited software, inaccessable RAW mode, non-standard USB connection, lack of flash shoe (Canon G5 has one-Casio does have external flash sync) and few other nit-picky concerns. I considered the Olympus 5060 but it was bigger and bulkier, had less optical zoom, and lower resolution. It was close. You need to decide what features are important. I would point out that comments by other reveiwers about the lack of a memory card and difficulty with the USB connector suggest that they were very new to the experience of using digicams and might have been happier with a less expensive, simpler rig.
USB port is a big problem.......2004-07-06
This camera has great features [and a 247 page CD-ROM manual] but is also easy to use without all the special settings. However, less than 2 weeks after I got it, the USB port broke while attaching the cable to download images - this happened even when using the supplied cable & being careful to insert it in the correct way. Now I may have to send it to their one US warranty center, in NJ, for repair. There is another review here with a similar complaint, & others elsewhere [now that I've had this problem & looked], so it's obviously not an isolated problem.
USB port broke easily.......2004-05-26
i purchase a casio exilim pro P600 last month the camera its good i enjoy taking pictures with it,,the image quality is perfect but sometimes if u make your own settings it will give u noise on your results....the down side just less than a month the USB port went-off/detach from the PCB board now i can't use the camera to load my pictures or view it on the video monitor...hope casio can see this problem so that they can improve the mounting of their USB port

Customer Reviews:
Great little camera!.......2003-12-25
This camera is loaded with features, but still easy to use. My Mom is a professional photographer and proclaimed this the best point and shoot ever. Bought one for herself, for me and my brother as well! She especially likes that it has sports/action capabilities. I have fun using the captions now and then (they are optional, so you can turn them off completely if you don't want them). It's nice and compact. Most importantly, it takes beautiful pictures!
One great little camera.......2003-01-06
Canon's Sure Shot Classic 120 series continues the Canon tradition of pushing the technology envelope further ahead. New and improved features include a powerful 38-120mm built-in zoom lens with aspherical optics, a 7-mode Best-Shot Dial for convenient and automatic camera settings, a 3-point dual hybrid autofocus system, built-in dioptric viewfinder adjustment control, and a high-efficiency built-in Light Guide flash.
Canon's state-of-the-art Sure Shot Classic 120 gives you all the control you need to take perfect pictures with ease. With seven different selections on the Best Shot Dial you can pick the setting you need for a perfect shot every time. And if you're looking for a camera to keep up with all the action of fast-moving subjects, this is it - thanks to its rapid zoom, Real Time Shutter Release (0.06 sec), 1.5 frames per second and AI Servo AF features. The Sure Shot Classic 120 is a major achievement in camera technology- its big ideas come in a very small package!
* Ultra-Compact Design: The Sure Shot Classic 120 is significantly more compact that most other cameras in its class. And its light weight (approx. 9 oz. w/o battery) makes it easy to carry anywhere, anytime, so there's never a reason to be without a camera.
* High-Quality, "Retro" Appearance: An aluminum front cover and metallic lens barrel give the new Classic 120 a look and feel of quality and classic elegance.
* 38-120mm f/4.5-10.9 3.2x Zoom Lens: The Sure Shot Classic 120's powerful all-glass zoom lens uses high-refraction glass and aspherical optics for greater contrast and image quality. Its extended zoom range covers a wide variety of shooting situations from landscapes and group shots to portraits, candids and distant subjects. The camera's real-image zoom viewfinder features a built-in dioptric adjustment for sharp viewing with or without eyeglasses.
* Hybrid 3-Point AF System: This advanced 335-step autofocus system automatically switches between Active Mode for near subjects and Passive Mode for distant objects, providing accurate distance measurements for every situation. The 3-point capability means that the Sure Shot Classic 120 will recognize and focus your subject even when it is slightly off-center. Central, single-point AF is also available at the touch of a button.
* Powerful Built-in Light Guide Flash: Canon technology has resulted in a new acrylic "light guide" design for the camera's retractable built-in flash unit to eliminate hot spots and improve evenness of illumination while maximizing lighting efficiency. Seven flash settings provide ideal lighting for a wide range of shooting conditions from backlit scenes to nighttime subjects. Optional Red-Eye Reduction improves indoor flash photos of people.
* Best Shot Dial with 7 Shooting Modes: The Sure Shot Classic 120 simplifies the ability to achieve perfect photographs with the use of Canon's original "Best Shot" Dial. Offering seven different shooting modes, the Best Shot dial automatically combines several function settings to render ideal camera settings for specific types of shooting conditions and subject matter. A new "Personal Mode" allows users to register their own favorite settings for AF, metering, flash and film transport.
* The Sure Shot Classic 120 Caption has all the features of the standard model plus five personal greetings and time-date imprinting, so you can label your pictures while you shoot. The optional Remote Controller RC-5 puts you in the picture from up to 16 feet away. More relaxing than an ordinary self-timer, the Remote lets you choose the precise moment to release the shutter. Now, there's no need to rush.
Very pleased with this little gem!!!.......2002-09-06
Before I start, I should tell you that I am no "pro" when it comes to cameras or photography. I have been taking "basic" pictures with "basic" cameras for about 20 years now...nothing fancy just the usual vacation, birthday and some amateur wildlife and landscape-type shots during my travels. Like most people though, I always wanted nice clear pictures with as little "fuss" as possible and up until a few months ago, was served quite well by my trusty Olympus Epic Stylus Zoom 80. It travelled all around the world with me numerous times over the years and took beautiful pictures of everything from icebergs in Antarctica to lions in Zaire! After many years of trouble-free service, my faithful Olympus finally broke down and so I began the task of researching a replacement. Within a month or so I had it narrowed down to three: another Olympus Epic Stylus Zoom 80, a Minolta Explorer EX Zoom (75 mm) and a Canon Sure Shot Classic Zoom 120. After much research (especially reading valuable consumer reviews like the ones listed in here) I determined that one of these three cameras were going to be able to give me what I was after in a simple, inexpensive "point and shoot" zoom camera. Each had their merits and also their detriments according to different people's opinions. The Olympus was the lightest and had the best lens quality, but had consistant problems with the "clam-shell" cover drive mechanism jamming. The Minolta had the best ergonomics and had a wider starting field at 28 mm, but had poor aesthetics. The Canon had the longest zoom at 120 mm and sophisticated personal setting abilities, but had issues regarding an awkward flash location and a difficult battery cover apparatus. All three camera's came in within about $80 of each other and were highly recommended in most editor and consumer reviews I read. I did some "hands-on" research by visiting numerous camera shops to see how each "felt". Most of the salespeople I encountered couldn't tell me much more than what the basic features and specifications were for each of the three cameras. It finally came time to make a decision because I had a vacation to the picturesque province of Newfoundland in eastern Canada coming up. I liked each of the cameras, but I finally decided on the Canon for the following reasons: firstly, I felt confident in the overall quality of the "brand". Canon makes good solid cameras and they back it up with the longest and most comprehensive warranty of the bunch (5 years). Secondly, I knew from all the reviews I had read that "regular people" like me found the camera easy to use and took awesome pictures using all of the numerous settings on the camera. Thirdly, I found the Canon to be the best priced (albeit I purchased the camera at a clearance price about $100.00 below MSRP). Finally, the shop I bought it from gave me a 30 day money-back guarantee...no questions asked! They also threw in a roll of ISO 400 and a roll of ISO 800 Fuji film with free processing for me!
OK, so let's "cut-to-the-chase" and talk about the picture quality. In a word.........AMAZING!!! I've had the camera for about 6 months now and have shot about 30 rolls of film, and I couldn't be happier! The pictures are crisp, vibrant and true! I have tried using all of the different settings and have not been disappointed with any of them. "Auto" takes the best overall pictures and everything is pre-set for that "no fuss" thing I was talking about earlier. The "action", "night-time", "portrait" and "close-up" settings are also pre-set for near perfect pictures each and every time! Granted, the "Personal" and "Spot" settings require a bit of practice but they work like a charm once you've grasped the concept. The zoom abilities are very powerful (although I would suggest a tripod to avoid shaky shots when using the full 120 mm zoom) and the adjustable diopter at the viewfinder is a handy feature for people like me who where glasses! Red-eye works very effectively, the film is always easy to load and I love the "retro" styling of the camera.
I'd like to address the two most common complaints that I had read about from other people's reviews with the flash location and the battery cover. I have easily trained my hands (and fingers) to work around the flash location and I don't even give it a second thought now, and the strap that comes with the camera has a small rubber device on it to easily remove and then re-attach the battery cover (read your manual's guys!!!!).
In closing, I would highly recommend this little gem of a camera! My trusty old Olympus camera rests in peace knowing that my new Canon camera is doing such a great job!
Disappointed with this camera.......2002-01-22
I got this camera and from the very beginning had problems. While outdoor shots looked great, indoor shots were often blurry, even with the flash, especially when zoomed out. Also, I noticed the red-eye reduction didn't work very well. Instead of flashing a bright "strobe", it lights a solid light at the subject. Due to the blurry photos, I experimented with different types and speeds of film but that didn't help. Then my photos started having light streaks on them. I discovered the back panel wasn't closing properly. I exchanged the camera for the Olympus Stylus Zoom 140. What a huge difference! No blurry photos, red-eye works much better. To test the Olympus, I re-took some photos with it that didn't come out with the Canon (i.e. dim indoor pool and gymnasium shots, partially & fully zoomed) and got back some great pictures, which were always blurry unless taken up close with the Sure Shot 120 Caption. I would highly recommend the Olympus over the Canon. Some people have written good reviews on this Canon, so maybe mine was defective and took bad photos. My best advice would be to buy from a store with a good return policy and test whatever camera you buy in all lighting situations right away.
Teething problems but great P&S camera.......2001-12-26
After much deliberation over many conmpact zooms in this price range I settled on the Sureshot. Out of the box it looks and feels great - lovely solid retro design - although the pop out flash was a bit annoying and the battery flap is a bit weak. I took loads of shots in Amsterdam and on the west coast of Ireland and waited eagerly for the photos. To my horror every single shot had a fine white line about a third of the way up the image. Ironically and frustratingly apart from this the photos were superb - excellent colour and sharply focussed. I took the camera back to the shop where they had it repaired (taking 3 weeks!) and the defect was removed. I have to say I have been very pleased with my photos since. For this price range the images look like they've been shot from an SLR. No hassle, guaranteed quality shots every time. What more do you want?
