Caveat Emptor - Buyer Beware.......2007-06-01
Please Don't buy this product unless you plan on working pro bono as a tech for yourself on behalf of creative. The Player will eventually freeze up and attempts to fix officially using creative updated "play for sure" firmware software will "destroy your player for sure". Simple. I just wish i had read a little about this before attempting to upgrade the software and i might have salvaged what little was left of the player. The good reviews are simply from people who just haven't heard trouble with their products, It's not a question of if but when. You've been warned.
Dead after 1 year 5 months.......2007-05-29
My wife & I bought two of these for Christmas in 2005 and loved them (our first MP3 players). Mine died 5-28-07 (5 mos out of warranty) and Creative's attitude is "so sorry, too bad, pay us for service, including online support or just fix it yourself." Read the postings on the Creative forum before you buy ANY of their products - CAVEAT EMPTOR. They have posted a firmware "upgrade" that frequently destroys the player. Woe be to the owner who hasn't backed up his ripped files. I have, and am shopping for another player, but it won't be made by Creative, I guarantee. We still own 2 Zen MicroPhotos (8 GB) and her Zen Xtra still works, who knows for how long? BTW, Creative's software is junk; you would be much better served to buy Notmad Explorer.
A Reliable Product from a stellar company.......2007-02-10
To begin with, I really do not recommend that anyone buy this product now (unless you can get it really cheap) because there have been so many advances since this came out. I have had mine for almost two years with absolutely no problems. I love this player. Around the time I bought it I could get the most memory for it for the lowest price. Yeah it was bigger and not as sleek, but it was definitely the right decision. In general I feel that Creative as a company is superior. All their products are well priced and of high quality. So if you are going to buy an MP3 player go with Creative over Apple. The Zen Vision M is cheaper and better overall. Just go to c/net to look at the reviews. While the 5th gen iPod scored slightly higher (.3 of a point)on the site review, the user satisfactory rating for the Zen Vision M was nearly 2 points higher. Take your advice from the owners. Creative does not disappoint. And while Apple may be the giant, I feel that unless you want to conform to society go ahead, but Creative provides unique and better choices.
bought it liked it, but trashed it.......2007-01-24
i bought this along time ago and had it a good while, but one day it fell in the toilet yes i know, it was in my pocket and fell out and boom short circut but it was awsome lol.
Newest Firmware Upgrade Destroys Player.......2006-12-28
It's that simple. The newest firmware upgrade for this player halts mid-install, not completely installing. The player will not start, Windows will recognize the player, but because there is not a complete set of firmware on the player, Creative's own software will not recognize it (thus not allowing me to run another firmware upgrade on the player). Do not buy this product.
By the way, I'm not alone with my complaint. The creative forums are plagued with complaints of this.

worth it??.......2007-09-04
I had this player for about 2 years. The drive crashed on me within a year, and creative did take it back and fix it. About a year later, the buttons broke, and I was no longer able to turn the volume up. Although it held up ok, I think that for the impressiveness of the outside case, it was very poor. The user interface is horrible, I couldn't stand using the player without having a pre-made playlist
Overengineered and Ugly but totally reliable........2007-04-02
I bought this player on discount ages ago and have had no problems. Oh, its interface is lousy and its features are scant but it is as reliable as taxes. I've dropped it, left it in my car for days on end (through heat and cold), tossed it around, and smashed it at the bottom of my backpack. It still works like a charm.
In this same period of time, my father has gone through 4 other mp3 players (3 iPods and another Creative product) and my mother has gone through 3.
I'm not saying the Creative Zen Xtra is the best mp3 out there; it has none of the whiz-bang features of newer players and the controls are often hard to use. But it's solidly built and will certainly outlast your investment in it.
No Ipod for me........2007-03-12
It's been almost 4 years since I bought the Zen Xtra and it's still the only HD based mp3 player I've used (I have a Sansa m230 that I use when I run). I've never had to return it or get it repaired and it still works great.
The ONLY flaw I've had with this player is if I jostle it too hard it will shut itself off and upon powering it on it will display the "Reorganizing the music library" message(I forget exactly what it says) and when its finished (takes about 3 minutes for having 25gb+ music) doing that it will resume where it left off.
So that's my long-term experience with this player. It was also way cheaper than the Ipod at the same capacity when I bought it so I'm one satisfied customer. ;)
creative zen xtra 30 GB.......2007-03-02
I bought one for 124.00 and I used it all of three days went online and got the update for the drivers and it froze on the start up screen so I have a very expensive paper weight.
Maybe worth the cost!.......2006-12-29
I have a Zen Xtra 30G player. It frequently needed to be reset, which is annoying. I have owned it just over a year now (just! bought it just before Christmas for my son, who chose to pass on the gift in favor of an iPod) so it's out of warranty. Although it worked OK, Windows Media Player 11 said I needed to update the Zen software. Using Creative's instructions and downloads, the player ceased to work; the computer sees it, but Zen's firmware program does not. It cost me several hours of struggling with their web pages and downloads, and I finally gave in and PAID $13 for them to tell me that apparently the card went bad, just as I was updating (of COURSE, it was not their fault, nor caused by the software, just a coincidence, he said) They'll fix it for $95-135, or the rep suggested that I just buy a new one. I will. It won't be a Creative player--the rep estimated 1-2 years of lifespan. If you decide to buy one, I suggest that you pony up the forty bucks they charge (on a NEW one)to guarantee their product at least two years.
UPDATE: I again contacted Creative, and they identified Media Player 11 as the cause. They provided complete instructions to roll it back to Player 10, and to reinstall the firmware. My Zen is working again, and is back to being full of my favorite music. I must commend their Tech Support for not just leaving me to swing in the wind. You can feel my frustration in my original posting, but my opinion of Creative improved considerably, thanks to the extra effort of the tech and the tech's supervisor. I would change my review to three stars, but it won't let me.

Five years and counting...........2006-05-09
Don't know what all the negative reviews are about. I've had my Nomad mp3 player for five years now, and it's NEVER quit on me. I've never had a problem with it, period.
I love the fact that I can plug it into my computer and transfer song files, create playlists, and fix it up just for my use. Since it's got a huge memory, I use it as a backup for the songs on my computer's hard drive, just in case the computer conks, which it has! Got a new computer, and since I had all my songs on the Nomad, I just did a quick transfer, and voila!
I wouldn't give up my Nomad for an Ipod ever.
the biggest let down.......2005-08-21
When i got this mp3 I thought i was getting a great substitute for an I pod because I pods are kind of expensive. Also I wanted to get an mp3 I would have for at least 2 years (that was cut short). When I was riding my bike 8/20/05 (3 months after i bought it) the mp3 all of a sudden stoped working. When the battery gets low a screen pops up that says that it has a low battery. That is what I thought happend but, if the screen popped up the player wouldn't have shut off. About 3 hours later I brought the mp3 home to see what went wrong. When i turned it on the screen fizzled out. Well tech support said to put a paperclip in the reset button. After putting the paper clip in the reset button 10 times the mp3 would not return to normal. So I took it as a loss and now I am getting an I pod. DON'T GET THIS MP3 YOU WILL HAVE IT FOR 3 OR 4 MONTHS AT BEST.
Not a fan of harddrive based players.......2005-02-18
I've had a couple of nomads and they've all died
on me. The last one was the NX. It only lasted
a couple of days and croaked.
Excellent sound, does what it's supposed to do.......2004-12-10
I bought a refurbished one of these off of eBay directly from Creative Labs. It only had a 30 day warranty, so once it ran out, I took out the 20GB hard drive that came with it and put in a 40GB one. I also got a second LiIon battery for it for under $20 on ebay.
The player does what it's supposed to do -- play back MP3 files in high fidelity sound. The Zen NX has a nice headphone amp and drives studio-style headphones without problem. The EAX DSP settings do a nice job with EQ'ing sound and also normalizing volume when you have it on shuffle. It also has virtually gapless playback -- this is, for me, a must. The included software is actually halfway decent. I use Red Chair Software's Notmad Explorer -- far better.
Complaints: no included car adapter, job dial feels a bit flimsy, no firmware support for Audible files (although you can get around it -- do a search on www.nomadness.net), making playlists without the computer is bothersome. The included earbuds are low-fi, get a set of Koss PortaPros or something similar.
Now, this being said, this player is good enough that the complaints are not enough to drop the rating below 4 stars. YMMV.
Too heavy and difficult to operate.......2004-10-07
I bought one in September 2003, it worked fine for a while, then I had to throw it away. It froze, and there was no way to bring it back to life, couldn't use it even as a storage device. It's heavy, the buttons are placed in awkward places and the menu is really hard to read. The aluminium face plate also breaks loose easily. The software can be a bit cumbersome. I wouldn't buy one again. And I hate to say that i bought an G4 iPod 20GB, and it works perfectly, the firmware is easy to use and the device is light and easy to operate. I am happy with mu iPod.

Nomad Zen NX.......2005-12-06
Since I have owned this for a little over a year now, I feel I can give this product a fair review. When I first bought it I was about to throw it against the wall. It froze constantly when trying to upload songs and even crashed my computer a few times. Nothing but problems. Now that I think I've kind of figured it out, I'll pass some info on to others that is not included in the manuals. If you are having problems or are on the fence about buying a Nomad over iPod this may help.
Cons:
- The software it comes with to 'organize' and upload songs BLOWS. Not only does it crash often but tried to take over my song library and reclassify everything. Don't use it. Use real player, Windows media player, musicmatch jukebox, whatever.
- Playlist functions are a pain. Once a playlist is created you cannot add more songs to it unless you attempt to use the Creative Mediasource Organizer. Then you risk a computer crash and having to reboot the computer and Nomad.
- You cannot upload more than about 1gb at a time or else it will overheat and freeze up. Happened to me numerous times. Just take it easy and do a little at a time.
- 2.0 usb cable is no great shakes. 2.0 is standard operating procedure for any device of this kind today so don't let Nomad pretend its a great new invention.
- If you drop this thing, it will freeze up and you will be unable to use it. The thing inside is like a record player. The 'needle' gets jammed and can't move. How to fix it: extend you arm with the front facing you and twist your arm in clockwise/counterclockwise motion vigorously. This will unjam the hard drive needle.
- Battery life is nowhere near the factory specs. I get about 3-4 hours. Life is especially low when you hook it up to a receiver with the line in and have to crank the volume.
Pros:
- If you have things in WMA format this is for you. Those that jumped the shark and bought an ipod found out the hard way that all those songs you downloaded from napster and kazaa that were in WMA format are unreadable on an iPod. Therefore Nomad is more compatible. Also if you are a fan of Windows media player, you will have no problem as it is fully compatible with a Nomad.
- You don't have to spend $10,000 to fill a Nomad like you do with itunes. While iTunes is great to get those hard to find one hit wonders, you are NUTS if you tried to fill your Mp3 device with it.
- Finding songs with the scroller is weird but you'll get the hang of it.
- Sound is pretty good. You can mess with the sound settings and get it to your liking.
- 30 gigabytes is a good chunk of space for music. More than enough room on this guy for years to come.
Do your research and don't fall for the hype (i.e iPod).......2004-10-24
I live in the United Arab Emirates , and since theres not much of a gadget "fever" here like other places , I've mostly relied on Amazon's members' reviews , which didn't always prove to be scientific .....
I'm a relative late buyer of the NX , I bought it in the beginning of Sep 2004 .
So here's the story , I needed mammoth storage device , for I have a huge collection of MP3s in 4 languages ..... I did my research and narrowed it down to 3 items , the iRiver 60GB , iPod 60 GB , and Creative Xtra 60 GB .... aiming for the best (or so I presumed) .....
And in the midst of my "quest" to find my dream gadget , a nearby retailer was clearing out the older merchandise , so there I saw the Nomad Zen NX 30 GB ,with a price tage of about 150 dollars .... which was amazing as compared to the iPod's hefty 600 dollars (in the UAE) ... I had other gadgets in mind to buy , such as a PDA/Surround ...etc .
I usually trust Creative because I've been using its products for a number of years now , and they always proved top notch when it came to sound products , so I reluctantly bought the Zen NX (after reading the hysterical BUY THE IPOD!!! Amazon reviewers) unable to ignore the 4x price difference .
Well heres the juice :
1- You DON'T need a radio , voice recorder , games , calendar , address book , or any of that babble , most of these specs are available on new age Nokia and other mobile phones .. so its more sensible to get it (IF you need it , because you're paying a hefty difference for these) in a PDA or an advanced mobile phone .In the beginning you might wander around the menu a little , but later on , it only boils down to music playing.
2-NO matter what they tell you , the menu of any handheld device is tiring to venture through , so the least options the better ...... more needless specs complicate things .
Now my review of the Zen NX :
1-Sound Quality : Superb ! I wasn't disappointed to trust Creative on this , specially if you have a Creative surround system/sound card . I'm a semi-pro musician , and I was very impressed by the sound quality .
2-Battery life : It lives up to the 14 hour line , and I use EAX sound effects , so maybe 11-12 hours for me , which is still great .
3-User Interface : I'm beginning to wonder if the iPod is some mystical creature from the garden of Eden ..... because 45 minutes after unpacking the NX (without reading the manual) I knew every nook and cranny in the NX system ... so I'm wondering how easier it can get .
4-Harddisk : After filling 18 Gbs out of 30 , the delay time is very minimal and only if you open an artist with a huge number of songs . You can connect the harddrive to your Laptop (which I did) and its a high quality harddrive .
5-Design : Matter of personal choice , but the front cover never fell off although i did drop the player quite a number of times .
There are some cons , such as not having an LED controller on the headphones' wiring ..... but hey , organize ur playlists and you won't need it , plus , considering the price ... you can't expect it all .
Bottom line is : If you want a fashion statement , go for the iPod (although the trend is fading into oblivion) , if you want a good easy-to-use does-the-job gadget , I highly recommend the Zen NX .
Rename it JUNKbox.......2004-07-17
Mine died (hard drive) in less than 6 months but the warranty only lasted 90 days. Customer Service was utterly unsatisfactory. Their solution was to send it in for repair, price $190 and wait (likely) 4-6 weeks. When asked for some kind of assurance that the new drive would not fail...something like a 1 yr warranty that they currently offer on the newer designs, I got nothing more than "these things tend to fail early."
The controls are an ergonmic nightmare and the software is weak at best.
Keep shoppng, this one is a disappointment.
When it's not just about the look........2004-06-19
Zen Nx or iPod...which one should I go for? After months of conferring with friends and reading reviews on the net, I finally went for the former. Not once have I ever regretted this decision, and these are the reasons:
a) It's so easy and quick to install the software, upload the files and operate the player (I know of someone who was unable to even load the iPod software to their PC and couldn't get any help from Apple since it's essentially not a 'MAC problem')
b) The battery life can indeed go up to 14 hours. I can leave it playing throughout the day, even when I'm out on lunch breaks and meetings and come back with it still full of life. A word of advice; Sound effects / equalizers can deplete the battery life, so unless you've got it hooked on to a power source, let it run normally.
c) The capacity. I own lots of CDs and I've nearly transferred all the songs I love into my player. I'm in this constant fear that I'll run out of space only to realize I've only filled up 10% of it.
d) Though the earphones aren't great, they can easily be changed. Besides, it's not just for my ears, I can hook it up (through the earphone jack) to my surround sound system at home and let it blast through the speakers with all the effects wanted.
e) The price - need I write more?
My only wish: to be able to view the lyrics through the LCD!
So what if it doesn't have the cool white look of the iPod? It has an anodized AL casing which is very modern, doesn't get dirty and a travel pouch that protects it (which is lucky for me, since I've dropped it a few times!) And then, others may say the Zen NX doesn't allow you to play games while the iPod does. Well, the primary use for this device is to play the songs you love, not to play the games you only ever choose to occupy yourself with if you're low on choice!
If you want a player that works, is user friendly and easy on the pocket, go out and buy the Zen NX!
Great Mp3 player.......2004-05-26
I bought this because I am in the millitary and go overseas alot. I have over 300 CDs that I couldn't take with me. My friend showed me the iPod and I decided I needed one. Problem was I did not have a computer with firewire. Then I found this and decided to try it out. It has been great I have 3800 songs on it and its barely half-full. The software is very easy to use and organizes your music in folders such as artist, album, genre, song title. It also keeps your tracks in order they are from the cd. The best feature is the random which shuffles every song on the player and plays them back randomly. This has allowed me to rediscover songs I had forgotten about instead of listening to the same songs over and over. The only complaint I have is that you can't transfer songs to or from a computer with out first installing the software. I have had mine for 8 months and have only had it lock up twice. This is an easy fix just take out the battery and it resets and goes right back to the track you were listening to. Good product, Great price

Buy it!.......2007-07-19
I've had my Zen for over 4 years now (hard to believe I've had it that long). I still haven't filled up the memory on it, I've never had a day's trouble with it, and it's easy to use. I'm starting to find it a bit bulky now in comparison to some of the smaller, sleeker-looking players on the market, but I still have the attitude "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The zen is superb, it's reliable, it's solid and easy to use, and I just don't see the point in changing to an ipod purely for aesthetics. I love my zen, and I wouldn't be without it.
Very nice player.......2006-12-05
Before I bought this I read reviews at Amazon, Cnet, and other places. Some unkind things were written. I have been living with this player for three weeks and have nothing but positives. Being new to portable music I didn't want to shell out $$$ for an iPod, but I wanted the massive storage space. I have no desire to watch videos, listen to FM, or share files, so this Zen Nomad seemed perfect.
What it has going for it:
1) Better price bargain than any competing device (I got it at an after-Turkey Day promo for under $100.)
2) It sounds great. The included ear buds sound ok, but the fit seemed insecure. I spent more for Bose In Ear TriPorts. WOW! The combination is superb and better than I thought possible with portable devices.
3) The build seems solid. My case has not popped open. It doesn't skip (but then, I don't jog with it), and the display is easy to read.
4) I can replace my own battery, thank you. I don't need to send it off and pay $50 - $100 for a replacement. Of course, it's possible the player won't outlive the battery.
5) The software is pretty easy to figure out. But I must admit that people who aren't computer savvy might be hopelessly frutstrated. There really should be a section in the next-to-useless booklet that explains step by step exacly how to transfer an album to the player and then play it. I shouldn't have to go to Creative's website to get this information.
6) Ok, it's heavy compared to an ipod: and uglier, too. BUt hey, I figure since it's not the toy everyone else wants, it's theft proof.
So-So.......2006-02-18
First, the pros:
The battery is easily removable and replaceable ($20), compared to an iPod which requires service from Apple if the battery dies. The same goes for the hard drive - I bought a Zen xtra with a broken 30G hard drive, and was able to easily swap it out and replace it with a standard 60G laptop hard drive that was sitting around. After installation of the firmware and operating system (available from Creative's web site), I was good to go with 60G of storage.
The cons:
Software, software, software. Creative's PC software is HORRENDOUS. Get used to long delays and frequent freezes and crashes, especially if you have many songs. My Zen has 22G of music on it in one big folder, and it takes minutes to load the folder up. You can't even browse the device as a hard drive: you have to use special Creative software that provides a pseudo-explorer-like interface. The cd-ripping software froze about half the time for me, and the sync tool didn't seem to work.
In short, if you're concerned about hardware and you're willing to put up with the hassle of getting this truly awful software working, get a Zen...otherwise just sped the few bucks extra to get an iPod.
Great MP3 player, great customer service........2006-02-05
I bought this for my spouse for Christmas...he absolutely loved it. A week later he closed his car door on his jacket pocket - the pocket containing his Jukebox. It was busted, would not work at all. We were devastated. After a few emails back and forth with Creative, they gave me an authorization for repair; I sent it to them and received the repaired unit, like new, in about a week. Fabulous! No problems since. If you don't care about the "ipod" name brand, I highly recommend this one!
Great MP3 Player for the money.......2005-12-30
I bought this MP3 player about 6 months ago, and love it. I got an upgrade to expand the hard drive to 80GB and I can't even see myself filling half of it anytime soon. The menu structure is very intuitive, and the screen is very easy on the eyes. I have seen other MP3 players that hurt the eyes when you're looking at the screen for too long.
The only issue I have with the player is a short battery life, but I usually have it plugged in with the AC adapter anyway. All in all, if you're looking for a large capacity MP3 player that won't break your bank, this is the one to get.
