Add a colorful splash to your desktop with the blue-green translucent SnapScan. With true 600 by 1,200 dpi and 36-bit color capture, the SnapScan scans beautiful photos, artwork, magazines, or text into your image editor or word processor. Plus, Agfa's intelligent ScanWise software and USB connection make scanning quick, easy, and fun.

To setup the 1212U, we unlocked the scanner, plugged in the AC power, inserted the CD-ROM into our PC, and followed the setup wizard to install the FotoSnap software. When we connected the USB cable (included) from the scanner to the PC, the Windows Add New Hardware wizard detected the scanner and requested the scanner driver, which we located in the root directory of the CD-ROM. Restarting Windows completed the setup process.

To test the scanner, we started our favorite image editing software and requested a new scan. The FotoSnap scanner driver software started automatically and presented us with a screen from which we could preview the color photo we had placed on the scanner bed. FotoSnap also presented options for changing the resolution and for image enhancement. During the preview scan, the 1212U was whisper quiet and the scanning time was only a few seconds.

Through FotoSnap, we specified the output from our scan as a 600 dpi printer. FotoSnap made the necessary adjustments, and we clicked the Scan button for a full scan, which took 40 seconds. We rescanned the photo using a magazine filter (to eliminate moiré patterns). The second scan took 75 seconds and looked beautiful. A third scan at 75 dpi for display on a color monitor took 73 seconds. The output to both the printer and the monitor looked warm, rich, and true to the original photograph.

We also installed and ran the Caere OmniPage LE software. Scanning a one-page text sample took 17 seconds plus another 5 seconds for OCR translation. We opened the translated document in Microsoft Word and found a few typographical and formatting errors, which is a common result even from high-end OCR software.

Overall, we were pleased with the SnapScan's performance. And you won't find a more delightful-looking scanner than the blue-green SnapScan 1212U.

Great Scanner At A Low Price.......2005-05-11

I thought I'd write this review as a counter punch to those who wrote bad reviews about the scanner. I purchased mine when I bought my first iMac back in 1998. Here it is 2005 and the scanner is still working as good as it did from day one. I have used it on every Macintosh I have purchased since my original iMac and it has worked flawlessly under Mac OS 9 all the way up to Mac OS X v10.3.9. I am finally replacing it because I bought an all in one printer (printer/scanner/copier) to replace a printer that quit on me today. But the scanner will be given to someone who can appreciate its ease of use and great quality scans. I was looking for a source of information on the scanner so I could send it to the person I want to give the scanner to and this link came up first in my Google search. Perhaps people who are using Windows are having issues with the scanner but this scanner works great with a Mac.

Prints only small........2004-04-22

I have the AGFA 1212U, and it has worked very well until the other day when it will print only one size (small). The only way I can get a different size is to send it through the E-Mail back to my self. Could you give me a hint as to what I am doing wrong? I have tried every thing I know.

I've had mine for over a year now and one similar to it before. It's very easy to operate and the scans come out great. It's also very quite and did I mention cheap? Buy this scanner!!

Don't buy this scanner!.......2000-03-28

I have had an Agfa SnapScan 1212U Color Scanner for just a little over six months, and it died for no apparent reason. I think the power switch on it stopped working. I noticed that the scanner did not shut off when I turned off my computer the last time I used it. My husband returned home from work yesterday and noticed that the scanner was making a lot of noise. He tried turning it off, but when he was unsuccessful, he unhooked the power supply. Now it's dead. I hear it making a slight noise when I power up my computer, but nothing happens. The Snapscan software doesn't even recognize that the scanner is powered on. I looked through my documentation and can find no information on a warranty, so I think I am stuck with a bum scanner. I didn't like it that much anyway. The software is hokey. Take my advice, and don't buy this scanner.

No support for Windows NT (so far).......2000-01-26

I have yet to get my scanner running. Maybe I shouldn't have taken it for granted that the product would run on a Windows NT OS. I could even live with the fact that it would use the drivers from Windows 98 and I would lose some performance. But the setup programs alerts me that it doesn't support NT, and then promptly quits.

Something, somewhere, whether on the Amazon.com website, or on the product package, or in the requirements listing, should let you know that it is not compatible with Windows NT. But it doesn't.

I don't really have any complaints about this scanner. So far, it has done everything that I have needed it to do. I did have a little bit of trouble installing it. (Be careful to follow the directions exactly.) Also, the user interface seems a little clumsy to me. But, all in all, I'm satisfied with my purchase.

NOT as Pleased as the editors..........2000-01-15

I have owned my SnapScan 1212u for almost a year and I am, as of this moment, searching for a different brand. The help available is nil. The scanner has big problems interfacing with the SCSI drivers...and I cannot even begin to explain why I have waited this long to replace it. But to give you an idea...every time I want to make a scan...I have to unplug the machine, replug in, and then hurry back and hit the scan button so that the software can detect the scanner while the scanner is 'gearing up' for it's run. This is not an occasional problem....it is every single time I use it. Sadly I thought this was normal until I was more informed. It does not install well. And adding it to newer machines is hell on earth. If I could...I would rate this -5 stars. Good luck to all...but I am unhappy with AGFA. Thanks!

Buyer Beware.......2000-01-04

Brief history: I wanted a scanner, USB was a big plus, the price was right, so I opted for the Agfa 1212U. The scanner arrived, and the install was a breeze. The few test scans I did looked nice, darn nice. The software was pretty good too. I was happy.

When I settled down to do some serious scans (family photo restorations) I found a terrible flaw in my scanner. The underside of the plastic scanbed had trash and debris on it. Because it was under the glass, I couldn't clean it off. Every scan showed these little "shadows" from the debris.

I attempted to call Agfa customer service. Mistake. Agfa does a marvelous job of directing you circles, not answering emails, and making relevant information hard to find. Their 'customer support' is a joke. Had I known the low regard Agfa has for their customers, I would have bought another brand.

In the end, I went through the retailer and another scanner is on the way. If Agfa had the tiniest respect for their customers, I would have rated the 1212U four or five stars. But, I cannot recommend this product, or any other Agfa product, very highly.

I bought this scanner for my 12 year old son and was amazed at how he was able to scan in photos from our trip to Disney Land. Agfa was a name I new from the camera market, this product works good and is very user freindly.

I have never owned a scanner before but was surprised to find out how easy it was to use. I had no trouble installing the software like the previous review. What pleased me most was the USB hook-up which, on my computer did't require me to reach behind. I was up and scanning photos within 15 minutes and because of the software allowed me to attach them to e-mails with a click of a mouse. I highly recommend this easy to use scanner.
