Amazon.com Product Description
Put the power of advanced photography in your hands with the Canon PowerShot S1 IS ultra-zoom digital camera. With its super-long Zoom, amazing stability and true Movie Mode, the PowerShot S1 IS brings a new dimension to the PowerShot line. Equipped with a host of top-quality features, this stylishly compact camera lets you create stills and movies like you've never done before.
10x Optical 38-380mm Zoom with exclusive Optical Image Stabilizer
Close, closer, closest: the high-speed Zoom Motor moves you in at top speed in near silence. So the high-resolution, super long 10x Optical 38-380mm Zoom Lens (35mm equivalent) with Canon's exclusive optical Image Stabilizer can let you capture the action with an intensity you've never seen before. Canon's shift-type optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, which significantly reduces the effects of camera shake--an important feature for high-magnification lenses. Tiny movement detection gyros and a correcting lens element counteract the effects of lens shake to deliver sharper final images. The resulting compensation is the equivalent of between 2 and 3 extra stops, which means the camera can be used at slower shutter speeds without a tripod without any detectable increase in image blur.

Optics and Resolution
The PowerShot S1 IS features a maximum resolution of 3.2 megapixels, or 2048 x 1536 pixel images--enough for prints up to 11 x 14 inches. It also has 1600 x 1200, 1024 x 768, and 640 x 480 resolution modes. The camera features a 10x, f/2.8 - f/3.1, 38-380mm (35mm equivalent) optical zoom lens. The zoom is driven by a tiny ultrasonic motor (USM), which uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive a tiny rotor that is powerful and highly responsive. In digital still modes it drives the zoom at maximum speed, while in video mode it slows for a smooth effect and runs virtually silent, avoiding interference with video sound recording.
Vari-Angle LCD with enhanced resolution
| 1.5" LCD Monitor with two brightness levels: Shoot from any angle with the PowerShot S1 IS's rotating Vari-Angle LCD Monitor. The Monitor's enhanced resolution also allows you to clearly preview and review your stills and movies to make shooting fun and easy. |
|
Take camcorder-quality movies right from the camera
30 frames-per-second VGA Video with Sound: The PowerShot S1 IS has a greatly enhanced Movie Mode that lets you shoot up to sixty minutes of DV-Quality VGA video with superior sound quality. Plus, you can zoom in the Movie Mode -- and even edit your movies -- right on the camera's LCD screen.
Instant Computer Connection
Picture Transfer Protocol for Win XP and Mac OS: Just connect the PowerShot S1 IS into the USB connection of your Windows XP or Macintosh OS computer. PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) allows the computer and camera to communicate instantly and to start the picture download process. There's no need to install a special driver!
Advanced Digital Imaging Technology
| Canon's exclusive DIGIC Imaging Processor revolutionizes how you shoot digital by allowing the camera to process images faster and improving the accuracy of the autofocus. DIGIC also reduces the effects on noise in your images.
iSAPS Technology is an entirely new scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC Imaging Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance. |

Customer Reviews:
Nice camera.......2007-09-23
Canon S1 IS is a great camera and as promised by various digi cam review sites, it is good for people in the intermediate range, i.e. between rookie (point and shoot) and pro (SLR and costly lens). Overall performance is great, focus, pic quality, battery consumption, ergonomics etc.
Some people say it is bulky but remember what all it is capable of, so i dont mind it.
However there are 2 things that become an irritation overtime......
1] It takes ages to focus fast moving objects (like jumping Dolphins in Sea World or flying jets in an Air show). I have seen better performance in simple $120 worth digi cams!!
2] Within the 1st 2 months there were 5 dead pixels (now it is 8 months since I bought the camera - no new dead pixels).
A Little of Everything.......2007-08-19
The S1 is the only camera I could find with a fairly high power zoom that also has a waterproof box which can be bought separately (no, it does not fit the S3). Although the retail price is a bit steep, I found a used camera with cleaning kit, filters, 3x lens, wide angle lens, etc. I ended up paying nearly $500 but I have a very versatile camera which I don't plan to replace for a long time. 3.2 mp works fine up to printer size paper. 2500 mah nimh batteries last plenty long enough and custom white blanking allows impressive low light pictures. I mostly use the auto setting because I still haven't explored all of the features explained in the manual.
Excellent camera for beginner or advanced.......2007-06-01
I've had this camera for more than 2 years and I'm ready to upgrade to the s3 version although this camera is still working great after years of moderate-heavy use as our "family camera". Although the size isn't all that convenient, it's fantastic movie mode means you can sell your camcorder. I have a professional Canon that I use in my wedding business, but this is in the bag for a backup situations and short video clips. If you practice in the creative modes, adjusting white balance, ect, not only will you get better, more creative photos-making this easy to use camera fun for an amateur photographer- you'll overcome the low-light situation mentioned in other reviews. Also I have lots of great photos from family trips taken in dark caves, around campfires and Disney at night. Just read the manual and use the right mode for the situation. A common mistake is using the portrait at night mode instead of the action at night in the auto modes.
We had good times.......2007-04-22
VERY sensitive to cold weather. Pouts and does not put its lens out if left in the JEEP overnight in Montana even if it's spring and there's only a light flurry that evening. I was just getting everything set perfectly (yes, it's taken me 4 years) when the lens quit extending. It is now a paperweight or doorknob art. It does still read cards...a plus, for door knob art, I think. I saw one person whose camera didn't work for them in the winter very well at all, mine worked fine while dog sledding and other great times in Montana and this camera moved from Florida all at once.
Shooting it fully automatic as you would with a cheap compact, you miss out on many of the features, not to mention: many good photos from dawn through a dimly lit club in the wee hours~~all without flash. If you can read the manual, you can work this camera, which has ways to personalize settings without worries as you can always "return to default" without concern.
Mine enjoyed over exposing when running free on fully automatic in full on daylight. I wish it would had been better at identifying moving targets and selecting shorter exposures, even in rapid mode.
These problems aside, the camera itself is capable of very good photos. Be advised, this could be a point and shoot, but to get the photos that you really want, decisions must be made! I don't believe this is for the casual photographer that is only interested in point-and-shoot. A feel for the basic photography concepts: using aperture or timing priority or fully manual; knowing what effects ISO and exposure compensation, etc. These will all be explained enough in the manual for you to operate the camera enough to enjoy it, I think. If you know how to use Picasa, the simplest way to add UV filter, I think, you don't even need to buy the proprietary click in version to actually place on the camera to make your photos look more appealing and professional. Go to go to Irish Gypsy's my space page to see photos ALL taken with this camera.
I strongly recommend spending a few hours with the advanced manual and the camera and learning properly how the exposure, white balance and focus controls work. It will really pay off! What you see on the approximately 1 knuckle length wide by about 1.5 knuckle long display screen will be what you get. Though it is difficult to see the itsy bitsy screen in bright daylight, this camera really shines in dim light with help from things like white balance to make sure you don't get the false sepia tone that makes things look so awful in dim light photos and Image Stabilizer mode, which I used even on the tripod, in case I forgot to turn it back on. Either way, this camera ate batteries like a bear on huckleberries. My battery recharger is worn out!! I'll be replacing the camera and the recharge.
All in all, worth the cost of purchasing the camera as a first digital camera. It is bulky, and I did miss out on some great shots because I didn't feel like hauling the camera with me on some particular excursion. I hope my replacement will take shots as nicely.
~~~~~~
May I say that I purchased this through here and Amazon does a DARN fine job!!
Superb.......2007-03-17
That's all you need in a simple camera.
Customer Reviews:
Great backcountry tripod!.......2006-07-18
The review below does a great job of extolling the virtues of this excellent tripod. I would like to emphasize that the 3001 may be the best non-carbon tripod out there for backcountry travel, whether day trips or extended excursions. I have used it extensively in the Alaskan wilderness with absolutely no problems - it packs light and small, bears sufficient weight for my backcountry rig, and is very durable. One drawback is on chilly evenings and mornings, the aluminum legs get cold! This can easily be fixed, though, with foam pipe insulation.
Good economy tripod for nature photography.......2005-03-16
The major strengths of this tripod are its low carry weight, solid build, and repairable legs. I used to carry a Bogen 3021, but found it unmanageable to hike with as it weighed too much. The legs have tightening nuts in case the locks are not grasping the legs well enough (many other brands lack this simple but essential feature). You can easily dismantle the legs in order to clean and relubricate them (I use an inexpensive white lithium lubricant). This tripod is one of the best value buys in the photography marketplace.
Drawbacks of the Bogen 3001 include the inability to get very close to ground level, twist leg locks are slow to use (I much preferred the locks on the 3021), the low maximum height may not work for medium to tall photographers who want to stand fully erect, and aluminum is nasty to handle in freezing temperatures. But on the balance, the weight savings make this tripod a top choice for those who don't want to spend more than about $100 on a tripod. I bought this tripod years ago intending to use the 3021 legs most of the time, with the 3001 legs reserved for backpacking trips. After a few weeks carrying the lighter 3001, I abandoned the 3021.
I recommend the black legs on the 3001 for nature photographers--shiny aluminum reflects the sun and may occasionally scare off wildlife subjects. Shoulder carry straps distribute the weight to only one side of your body, so I suggest taking a long look at photo backpacks (such as the LowePro Rover AW II, or the LowePro Photo Trekker AW II) that carry the tripod on the back of the pack.
If money is no object, I would instead recommend the Bogen 190MF3 carbon fiber/magnesium tripod, which addresses all of the drawbacks above except maximum height (it is the same size as the 3001), and adds a number of outstanding new features. I recently bought a 190MF3 and I now use it exclusively. The top "spider" design allows the legs to be splayed flat and the center column to be remounted in seconds as a cross-bar--both features are excellent aids to macrophotography. I rate the 190MF3 as a five-star tripod, but it is much more expensive.
The 3130 is a lightweight fluid head with adjustable pan bar and quick-release camera plate with secondary security. It is ideal for cameras up to 8.9lbs in weight. The head has smooth fluid movements, pan and tilt locks. The adjustable pan bar can be positioned either on the left or right side.
Customer Reviews:
A+ Huge, Cheap, LCD Monitor (Update... still no problems).......2005-03-02
I wrote this review in January. I have deleted it and lost the points just to add some updates because the review is more important to me. The bottom line is that the monitor is even better than I hoped. NO DEAD PIXILS. NO PROBLEMS... like none, zero. I have found this monitor by far the best bang for your buck. As for going pro and paying more. Go pay more if you want a pro LCD monitor. But to be honest I would put that kind of money into a projector for widescreen movies. If you want an LCD monitor for Counter-Strike, Games, Graphics work, then this is what you want. If you want to present your $100,000 car via video to your client using a 19" LCD monitor in the show room, then obviously go spend $1,000 on a good LCD showcase LCD and not this.
Ghosting is there, but to be honest I have seen ghosting on this and the Dell but there is no way to get near no-ghosting effects without spending on pro LCD monitor, period. And we are talking not domestic Sony products that cost a bomb but pro line broadcast products not found on Amazon... i.e Panasonic pro range and Sony Broadcast stuff.
The NEOVO range sells like hot cakes and competitor prices differ vastly on this monitor because you can sell it at three times the asking price. Basically this is a 19" whooper LCD that sits next to 15" Sony monitors (at the same price or this is much less) and makes them look like little monkeys. The 17" pro models are usually twice the price but this big screen just gets snatched up because it is so much more in size and so much cheaper than the item next to it, and get this... chances are no dead pixels (anything less than 6 is acceptable as long as they are all not clumped together or something. AG actually has good quality monitors. I viewed several of these 19" monitors and have found one with two dead black pixels on white and even I would have bought that if it was the only one left. Seeing monitors is a good idea but AG seems like a good bet on-line judging by what I have seen although I must admit the box felt a little loose carrying it.
Turn on any LCD and the room suddenly gets brighter. Same with this model... yes it is an LCD!
The actual screen appears to curve slightly inwards, a nice effect with the 19" resolution quality (1,280 x 1,024). A Pro 256mb graphics card set at full acceleration and something like an MX1000 laser mouse and I am sure even pro graphics users would not complain about the neatness of their work. Gaming-wise you will never look at another monitor the same way again. In terms of graphics, I will say that the 19" pro monitors where really nice but a way more expensive. This Neovo beat most 21" CRT monitors, hands down, but there where some 21" inch CRT screens that could still compete with this at a cheaper price. Something to think about... but slim is in and the LCD is pretty much LCD.
Of course there are some drawbacks, the monitor does not have a perfectly steady base, does wobble a little more than pro models but does stay standing. You would really have to tilt the desk or hit it hard to knock it over. The pixels are also somewhat harsh if you look at the screen closely and you do see the pixels with clear 20/20 vision which means that it is not really high-end at all except for the size price factor.
To be honest the NEOVO F-419 is more like a very high quality 17" LCD monitor on blowup than a true 19" panel.
Unless you are doing extremely pro stuff like large 2 meter x 2 meter graphic prints or telecine 35mm motion picture film CGI which requires higher resolutions like 1600+, meaning popping the extra (triple the price) for a pro 19" model then undoubtedly you will have a more superior 19" LCD with a higher resolution and probably everything else. No one is going to disagree with you there, but those who have spent money on pro 19" monitors are going to want to keep them for at least five or six years minimum at those prices. Next deal next decade? The F-419 is not cheap but let's face it - I can retire it in three years time from now and feel I got some use for it. Would certainly buy AG again.
However the 19" blowup effect of a high quality 17" monitor makes this thing unstoppable except for those with bigger wallets. Viewing high resolution scans is like a new experience. Playing Half-Life 2 just improved the game like x 100 even though the ghosting on this monitor is a little more noticeable than the pro models but beat any 21" CRT hands down because it is LCD.
In short, budget LCD is here. 15" and 17" forget it... why waste the money? Get this 19" or go 19" pro or better for higher sums.
Pros:
- Best buy LCD monitor at this time.
- Gorgeous Price Tag.
- No dead pixels.
- Huge Size.
- LCD
Cons:
- Not a true 19" LCD.
- Probably under par in every department for a 19" LCD except for all working pixels.
- Ghosting a little stronger than the next $100 model but $100 does not buy you no ghosting (however to be honest there is no monitor like this at the price).
- No height extention (might need shelf)
An Indestructable LCD Monitor!.......2003-01-17
I held off buying a TFT because of their delicate screens. Now, this is a dream, around the same price as other flat panel monitors. The glass filter also enhances the viewing quality, even in sunlight. It doesn't offer as many viewing angles (just a small tilt), but once I saw it I was hooked. Easy to set up. I can't turn away from the computer now. If I could just stop raving and get more work done...
Customer Reviews:
Great view, great price.......2007-09-17
These binoculars have good optical quality for a low price. The focus is a little tough to do because of the higher power. The focus lever is a little tight and it's easy to go past the focal point because you have to press so hard on the focus lever. The higher power makes it difficult holding these binoculars steady but that's not a fault of the binoculars but just the fact that this is probably the highest optical power you can use and still be hand held. Field of view is also pretty narrow but once again this is because of the higher power. On the plus side these binoculars have a big bright image. The optics is quite sharp and the price is very reasonable. I like them and use them for bird watching but I do realize the compromises I have to make to get high power at a low price.
Great Binoculars for the Cost.......2007-07-19
The Powerview 10x50 wide angle binoculars are great for the price. They bring the action close and that distant deer or mountain right to you. Yes some $300.00 whatevers would be a little brighter, a little more saturation on the colors, etc. But, for for the price, there is nothing to complain about. Good image, good contrast, excellent diopters for sharp viewing (I take off my glasses when using the binoculars). For the cost, you will not be dissapointed.
Fix the Straps.......2007-07-17
It took me close to an hour before I could get the ends of the neck strap to go where they were supposed to go. They're too thick to attach. I'm sure Bushnell could come up with better straps -- or, at least, send the binoculars with the straps already attached.
No zooming option.......2007-07-09
Bought them last week.
The magnification is good but there is no adjustment of zoom. I tried to look at birds and other distant objects but unless you know exactly where to focus, you won't be able to see them. There is no way to zoom out and then slowly zoom in.
I am returning them today.
nice binocular.......2007-06-11
Nice binocular, the only thing is it take time to adjust it and due to last magnification it's hard to make the view stable due to shaking hands..
