The D-Link DWL-650 is an IEEE 802.11b compliant PC Card Type-II 11Mbps wireless LAN adapter. The DWL-650 will operate in 2.4 GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) for wireless networks in the home or office environment. It is designed to operate in 3.3V or 5.0V DC slots. In addition, the DWL-650 uses a 64/128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) Encryption for a secure network connection. The D-Link DWL-650 can operate in either Ad-Hoc mode (Peer-to-Peer networking without access point) or Infrastructure mode (Peer-to-Peer networking using an access point). In Infrastructure mode, the DWL-650 can be connected to a broadband residential gateway or a DSL/Cable modem for high-speed wireless Internet access on the existing network. The DWL-650 can transmit data at 11, 5.5, 2 or 1 Mbps per channel. The DWL-650 transmit rate values can be manually selected for Auto Select 1 or 2 Mbps, Fixed 1 Mbps, Fixed 11 Mbps, Fixed 2 Mbps, Fixed 5.5 Mbps and Fully Auto. The DWL-650 has full mobility and seamless roaming from cell to cell as well as across access points.
Amazon.com Product Description
A notebook computer is all about portability, so why should your network cable keep you tethered to one place? The D-Link DWL-650 PC card Type-II 11 Mbps 802.11b wireless LAN adapter, known as the D-Link Air for short, gives you back your mobility, letting you connect to your home or office wireless network from whichever desk (or couch) you happen to be at. Plus, as wireless networks continue spreading to hotels, airports, and even coffee shops, it will help you keep connected no matter how far you travel.
The DWL-650 installed easily, as a PCMCIA card should. We just ran the setup program from the included CD and plugged the card into an empty Type-II slot on our notebook PC. Windows XP immediately recognized the card and installed the drivers. Then, using the D-Link configuration utility, we configured it for our specific LAN. Once connected to the LAN, the little green LED on the end of the card stopped blinking, telling us we were good to go. The printed manual and online help gave helpful guidance on getting the card installed and connecting to our network.
As we tested our wireless setup, we reveled in the freedom the D-Link Air gave us. Using it in a two-story house, we were able to go from room to room, never losing our Internet connection. We even could go outside on the patio and browse the Web from a chaise lounge. Of course, the card worked equally well in an office environment, letting us take our notebook from the conference room to the lunchroom without losing our network connection.
In general, we found that the construction of the walls between the wireless card and the access point had as much to do with reception quality as did distance. So, for instance, if you're separated from the access point by several thick walls, reception will be much poorer than if a glass partition is all that separates you. The manufacturer suggests a range of up to 328 feet indoors and up to 984 feet outdoors, and we found that to be a decent approximation of the maximum range you can expect. The D-Link control utility has a graphical status bar that shows the wireless signal strength, so it's easy to know when you've wandered too far.
At 11 Mbps, the speed's plenty fast for most uses, like browsing the Web, accessing a file server, updating a database, etc. You can also configure it to transmit at slower speeds, depending on your network environment. The card supports both 64-bit and 128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption, a vital feature that keeps your communications secret.
The D-Link Air will keep you well-connected whether at work, at home, or through a public WiFi (wireless fidelity) network at places like an airport or coffee shop. Since it's a PCMCIA card, it's easy to swap in and out if you need to use a wired connection in some places and wireless in others. Bottom line, if you have a notebook PC and have access to wireless capabilities, you'll love the freedom of movement this little card delivers. --Ken Feinstein

Good 11b card for portable devices.......2007-02-17
Using adapter with Jornada 720 and compaq drivers without any problems
Their web suggests good linux support but..........2006-02-25
The chipset in this model changes from revision to revision. When I checked their web I got the impression it had good linux support. Before I purchased I also got the same impression - but that was for some other revision of the card.
So - the two stars is for that. I have no reason to believe that the hardware is not just fine - but I feel like D-link misled me into thinking this card had good linux support.
The Best PC Card In the Business.......2005-08-30
I first tried a Netgear MA521. It saved me in France from being completely without internet service, but connections were spotty. Here at home, it worked fair, but only in a couple of rooms. And then kept looking for network address. Then tried a Linksys WUSB11. This is worthless, and I NEVER got connected anywhere in the house. Not once. Then the D-Lind dwl-650. This is great. Works ANYWHERE in the house and never loses the connection. And I don't even have broadband.
Easy to use and Works Perfect.......2005-04-12
When I say that this wireless adapter card works perfectly I mean it. I've never had to reboot because of this being in my laptop, or ever had a problem with my wireless connection because of this card, nor was it hard to get working in the first place.
I can't say how much I value this card because you only know the value after it's gone. And I've never been apart from this card now that it's pretty much a permanent fixture in my laptop.
The range is perfect for me. I never feel that I have to get super close, nor do I feel I can walk real far away from the AP I'm connected to. Overall this card works wonders and I recommend it to anyone who needs a wireless adapter PCMCIA slot card in their laptop.
Decent and Reliable 802.11b Laptop Card.......2005-04-05
If I had to buy another wireless card for my laptop, and I wanted to stay 802.11b, I'd buy this card again. And how many computer devices can you say that about? Not many in my book.
This wireless card was easy to use and installation just took one reboot and some clicking of NEXT. Everything seemed to work on the first try and I haven't had any major issues that a normal reboot didn't fix now and then. But I don't blame that on this card, just windows.
Good range, decent configuration interface, and doesn't take a powerful machine to run it. It works for me and I don't see why it wouldn't for others.
Product Description
The D-Link AirPro DWL-AB650 is a cardbus adapter for laptop computers that can connect to both 802.11b and 802.11a wireless networks. The DWL-AB650 enables IT managers to plan for future network growth or to immediately expand their wireless network infrastructure when available wireless channels have already been tapped out. The additional high-bandwidth channels available with 802.11a also offer users on the network a robust way to transmit large data files much quicker than what was possible with 802.11b. Users have the option of connecting to an 802.11a network in the office or at home to take advantage of the greater bandwidth for large file transfers; or connect to a 802.11b "hotspot" network to retrieve and send emails. The DWL-AB650 is IEEE 802.11a and 802.11b compliant and interoperable with other 802.11a and 802.11b compliant devices. When communicating in the 802.11a bandwidth, the D-Link DWL-AB650 also provides a level of security not previously achievable from other standard wireless solutions. The Atheros Communications 802.11a chipset's utilization of the latest data encryption standard, AES along with 802.1x for user authentication provides a much more formidable barrier to hackers and sniffers, allowing users to share confidential or time-sensitive data with a much greater sense of security. The DWL-AB650 also has the option to utilize 152-bit WEP with Dynamic Keying with 802.1x user authentication. When used with D-Link's other 802.11a and dual-band, multimode access points and routers, the DWL-AB650 also offers a quick, out-of-box solution to instantly expand a company's network.
Customer Reviews:
Barely acceptable........2004-11-02
I have both a DWL-120+ and the DWL-AB650. I am using the wireless adapters with a DI614+ router and neighbors routers.
My DWL-120+ detects and uses several available wireless routers besides my own router. The signal detected from my router is consistently weighted at greater than 90% signal strength. The other routers signals are greater than 65% signal strength.
My DWL-AB650 consistently detects my routers signal in the range of 50-70% signal strength.
The other routers are not detected at all.
Dlink tech support has no reasonable fix. I'm a Motorola Radio engineer. Maybe I have high expectations a response to an obviously flawed product by DLink Tech Support.
From now on, I will buy D-Link products!.......2003-03-30
This card has the following metits: 1) works greatly, even in the condition of weakest signal; 2) easy to install in WinXP Home edition; 3) dual modes ready for potential upgrades; 4) absolutely cheaper than any other dual band cards I have ever known (pls buy it from Amazon.com, I received my card in the third day after I ordered for free shipping). Thank you--Amazon.com!
Another great D-Link product.......2003-03-24
I purchased this card very recently, and it works great. It is very easy to install (in my case on a Micron Millenia laptop running Windows ME). The installation guide (geared for XP) is very concise and easy to follow. This card is "hot-pluggable", meaning you can easily get onto your network with your OS running. You need a 32 bit cardbus slot which is available on most newer laptops. The only negative would be the "pop-up" design of the antenna, which could cover your second PC card slot and make it non usable). I have 802.11b and use DI-713P, and I get a great and sustained connection signal. I cannot comment on the "a" protocol, but I am sure it will work as advertised. Also it allows you to tap into public "hotspots" when out of town (eg. airports, hotels). I bought it mainly because of its dual mode, which is a very handy feature and keeps your options and potential upgrades open in the future. It certainly makes more sense economically than purchasing 2 separate cards, and Amazon had the lowest price (even cheaper than the 22Mbs 650+ or wireless G), specially with the current rebate. Even though most wireless connections are currently 802.11b, the emerging "G" and faster "A" modes will sure make this dual AB card a first choice. Needless to say I am a D-Link fan for networking (this is my 6th, but not last, D-link product), and would definitely recommend the DWL-AB650. Thank you Amazon.

Buy this model instead of the new (2007) one!.......2007-08-06
Two months ago I purchased the new Airport Extreme Base Station which came out in early 2007. ..... IT IS GOING BACK IN THE BOX AND I AM GOING BACK TO THIS MODEL. ..... The new model constantly drops my Internet connection, whereas this model consistently works. ..... TRULY, A REAL KEEPER!
It simply works.......2007-07-17
I struggled with a Linksys router which never worked, then a D-Link router that I had to reboot several times a day. Then I bought the Airport extreme. It took me longer to read the couple of paragraphs in the instruction manual than it did to set it up! I was up and running in ~10 minutes, it connects flawlessly, and pages load way quicker than the Duh-Link router.
Avoid a headache and buy this router first. Apple products rock.
Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station w/Modem.......2007-06-13
I gave this product only 4 stars because of a couple of problems I had with the setup. First, even though my iBook recognized the APX, the software that came with the APX would not allow me to set it up to dial my ISP. It was frustrating because the APX recognized the iBook and vice versa but when I brought up the Admin Utility software that came with the APX, the wireless connection was not there so I couldn't configure the system. I finally went to the Apple website and posted my problem in one of the Help forums and luckily someone told me to try connecting the computer to the APX via an ethernet cable and doing the configuration that way. That worked fine and then I disconnected the ethernet cable and the WiFi worked great. A line or two in the instruction manual to let the user know of this possible glitch would have been helpful and saved a couple hours of frustration. Also, the manual is, in my opinion, inadequate in explaining how to set up a dial-up connection with the APX. Since this is one of the few routers that come with a built in modem, I would think that many people buy it, as I did, for that feature. But the manual tells how to set up the connection with a DSL modem or a network connection, but just mentions the dial-up mode and really doesn't explain how to set it up. I'm a die hard Apple fan but I think they missed the boat on that one.
Having said all that, now that I have the APX configured, it works great. We have a dial-up connection so the APX dials the ISP for us and then provides the WiFi connection. My friend came by and he has a Windows computer but we configured it to work with the APX and it works fine as well.
Apple does it again...........2007-05-24
What can I say....easy to set up, easy to operate, rarely a problem. My only minor complaint is that on rare occasions my laptop will fail to establish a connection, even when I know I am in range and both laptop and airport are properly set up. It happens about once a month, so not really a significant problem.
I pity the computer owner who does not have a mac....
It works!.......2007-03-11
Two minor issues, but I gave 5 stars anyway. I decided to go with the Airport Extreme Base Station mostly because I have three Macs at home. (I work with Windows machines all day, and eight hours of frustration is enough!) Here's my set-up: I have a G4 PowerMac, 1.42 dual, that I use for recording music and an older G4 that I use for the business-end of the studio (word processing, database, scheduling, etc.). These computers are in a building that's about eight feet from the house. Also in the studio is a Espon Stylus Photo R800 printer. In the house we have a PowerBook G4 that we mostly use sitting on the couch upstairs.
I set up the Airport in the studio. It is connected via ethernet to the modem supplied by Comcast. The music computer is connected to the Airport also via an ethernet cable, and the printer is connected via USB.
I took the Airport out of the box, hooked it up, and used the Airport Set-up Assistant on the PowerBook to configure everything. The network started working almost immediately. All three computers connected to the network with no problems: two of them wirelessly and the other through the ethernet cable. I was able to share files among and print from all three computers. After three hours of trying, however, I still wasn't connected to the internet. Finally I called Comcast. They said they couldn't help with 3rd party hardware issues, but before the guy hung up, he suggested that I reset the modem by unplugging and plugging it back in. That fixed it.
The two issues I've had are: The two wireless computers don't automatically connect to the network after a restart or sleep mode. I have to go to system preferences>network, etc. I've read the manual and done searches, but so far I haven't figured out a solution. I still consider it minor because, even though I have to manually connect, it still takes less time than it did back in the days when I had dial-up. The other issue is that occasionally the wireless signal to the PowerBook upstairs falls to one bar or drops out altogether. This happens about once in every 4 hours of use. Usually the signal is at 3 or 4 bars (out of 4). I have friends who have told me I should be happy with this performance. As I'm writing this, I'm sitting about 40 feet, two walls, and one floor away from the Airport and I'm seeing 4 bars. Someone suggested to not go with the "Automatic" setting for channel select. I started trying the channels one by one and channel 5 far outperforms the first 4. I haven't even tried 6 through 11 yet.

Customer Reviews:
Does work on Mac OS X 10.4.9 iBook.......2007-05-06
Very good product. I purchased this adapter to connect a PS/2 connector barcode scanner to my PowerPC iBook running Mac OS X 10.4.9. When I first connected the adapter to the USB port on the iBook (after connecting the barcode scanner to the adapter), OS X discovered the keyboard connection and prompted me to go through a wizard for the computer to determine the keyboard type. If you do this, make sure to connect the keyboard to the adapter BEFORE plugging the adapter into the computer, so that it can make the appropriate device determinations. In order for the wizard to determine the "keyboard" type (ANSI), it prompted to hit the key to the right of the left shift key, and the key to the left of the right shift key (Z and / for my iBook). To do this with the barcode scanner, I printed custom barcodes for the characters with a barcode font and scanned them. The scanner now works well just as if it were connected to a PS/2 port on a PC. I would definately reccomend this product. Although I haven't tested it on a PC yet, I would assume it works since the box description indicates it would, and it works with a Mac.
Works great on our laptop.......2006-08-25
We have a brand new Sony Vaio running XP and this works great--haven't noticed any lag time in the mouse function (as was mentioned in a prior review) and it is very handy. A very decent product--I would recommend it.
Works fine on Mac and PC.......2006-04-23
This is a very useful device. It's highly compatible, and it works fine on both my Macintosh laptop (MacBook Pro) and my desktop PC running Windows XP. It does what it says it will do. The only minor complaint I have is that the mouse movement is not quite as smooth when using this device (both Mac OS X and Windows XP).
Other than that, it's great!
Doesn't work with a Mac.......2005-11-10
I tried using this to connect my PS/2 keyboard and mouse to my iBook. No luck. The mac thought that I had keys held down when I didn't, which made the setup totally unusable. On the package, but not in this online description, it mentions that a Windows machine is required.
Simple, basic, does the job it was meant for.......2004-03-18
Assuming you've got an available USB port on your PC, and are running a USB-compatible version of Windows (Win98SE or higher, or Windows 2000/XP), this product does exactly what you'd expect it to. Simple to use - just plug your PS/2-style mouse and/or keyboard into the unit, then plug the unit into an available USB jack on your PC, and Windows will autodetect the devices.
This is an excellent device to use if you want to attach two PS/2 style keyboard/mouse combos to the same PC - for example, if you've got both an adult and a child-size keyboard you want to run on the same PC, and both keyboards have PS/2 jacks.
Device also works great if you want to attach a PS/2 style keyboard or mouse to a laptop which has only USB ports.
