3 out of 5 stars For the price it's ok.......2006-07-18

I read the reviwes of this product before i bought it and a saw a few complaints about audio and imagege syncronization, well i have no such problem with that.

I wanted to convert all my old VHS movies to DVD format and i bought this card to do that, no problem with the hardware or software, everything works like it supose to, the only 3 downsides i found after 3 months of experience with this card where:

1 - Even if you chose the best quality to generate the output file, it will come out poor image and audio comparing to the original analog. VHS format.

2 - The ouput file generated, is very big, to give you an idea of this, chosing the best quality possible and after compressing 120min of VHS movie you will obtain an output file so big that you will have to burn 2 DVD's to store the file (if your luky! )...

3 - The edition software could be better...

but you need to take in consideration the price of this equipment that is very good. If you want something with more quality you can find other products, but the price is almost 3 times more expensive than this one, and i dont't garantee the quality will be much better than this one.

Bottomline, for the price that' ive paid it's OK, but i dont't think i will use this card to convert VHS movies into DVD, i will only use it to convert small size documentaries and so.
If you plan to convert movies using this card, well you better think twice, i order the original DVD from the net like i did.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.......2006-01-05

Installed the card and software - no problems. But I cannot get a picture. I've spent many hours trying to get it to work all to no avail. Customer support sucks.

3 out of 5 stars Good hardware, mediocre software.......2006-01-03

0. Using a 2.6GHz P4, 512 MB memory. Windows XP.
1. Easy Installation, both for the card and the software.
2. The hardware works great, except I haven't figured out how to capture through Nero.
3. Currently, I use VirtualDub with DivX 5.2.1, standard speed at 4mbps, although HuffyUV and MJPEG are usually suggested for this, but needs LARGE disk space. Has a few dropped frames, but mostly OK. Then postprocess it later into smaller DivX files.
4. The software (neoDVDstandard):
a. The image quality for VCD/Mpeg1 and "Good" quality for DVD/Mpeg2 are quite bad.
b. The image quality for "Best" quality for DVD/Mpeg2 is quite good. The file size is a bit on the large side. But it's OK if you are going to compress it into mpeg-4. However,
c. There are serious sound sync problems. One can hear pops and dropping of segments of sound quite frequently. This is usually no big problem for family or travel video, but if you have a music video on VHS to dub, BIG PROBLEM.
d. The tutorial is crap. No use at all.
e. Also, something happened at installation that caused it to be installed in German. There is no way to switch back to English inthe application. Since I know a little bit of German, I did not bother to see if this can be corrected by reinstallation.

In conclusion, I would say the hardware is fairly decent. The software is quite easy to use, and produces good video quality, and bad audio quality(but good enough for most family videos).

5 out of 5 stars Did exactly what I expected.......2005-12-01

I have a bunch of Hi-8 and VHS movies that I need to transfer to DVD. After installation on Windows 2000 Pro, this product allowed me to record a HI-8 video directly to DVD. Easy as pie!

I don't have a lot of time to "bit-twiddle" with home videos, etc using high-end graphics editing programs. This card is exactly what I needed to convert analog movies to digital. I just plugged it in, pressed a button, and left the room.

There are a few more advanced features that I have yet to use, such as recording video to MPEG-2, or a few other formats the NeoDVD software provides. Maybe later, but for now this hardware is cheap and does exactly what I need.

1 out of 5 stars Don't even think of buying this product.......2005-11-22

This is the worst piece of junk I've ever seen. I tried installing it in two ordinary, conventional computers running Windows XP and it DID NOT WORK! The help desk told me things like: "Yeah, it's not supported on some motherboards". What kind of answer is that? I spent HOURS on the phone with them trying all sorts of things.

4 out of 5 stars Works Pretty Well.......2005-11-21

This product has worked pretty well for me. I've read many bad reviews for other similar products so I was careful when I picked out this one. The software seems stable and had no problems with the audio being out of sync.

I have not been able to find the manual on the install CD but haven't looked too hard.

If you're looking for an inexpensive product to move your vhs tapes to dvd, this is it!

1 out of 5 stars Not a video capture card?.......2005-08-25

I bought this product thinking that I could plug my analog camcorder right into my USB port and capture the video that way. No such luck. Then I read on their website that you need an analog capture card to do such a thing. So what exactly is this product supposed to do? Any help would be appreciated.

1 out of 5 stars NO SUPPORT, the dog ate your questions.......2005-02-27

Before you buy this product or any other from Aver, go to their web site and try - TRY - to ask a question. Not only do they grill you as if all prospects are liars and idiots, they don't reply even after you do type in ALL your system information. For more than a week, I've tried to ask someone from the company if it's true that this hardware cannot use ANY software except the exact (and severely limited) SE products shipped with it. No reply. Not even a form letter.

If it's true that the product is supported by absolutely NO software company - what happens in a year? Six months? Two years? How long do they expect this thing to last? It's like buying a camera which can only use film produced by the original company. How do you guarantee that they'll be in business a year from now?

Aver is the laziest, most user-unfriendly company I've seen in a while. Buy their products with the idea that they cannot be repaired and will not be supported. A company that can't be bothered to reply to email from its own site is not a trustworthy trading partner.

Try the Plextor ConvertX Digital Video Converter (PX-M402U). It has superior specs, is nearly the same price and when I emailed a question to them, they got back to me in two hours. Further questions were again answered in a timely way. THAT is customer service. These days, companies rush products out the door and the early buyers become the final beta testers. YOU NEED customer service, whether you know it or not.

5 out of 5 stars The Answer To A 15-Year-Old Prayer!.......2004-10-26

After many years of frustration, I had just about given up on my dream of transferring my precious Renaissance Pleasure Faire video tapes to digital format in order to preserve the wonderful memories. I feared the tapes were doomed to rot from age even with the best of care.

Then I came across the Avermedia DVD EZMaker Pro USB 2.0, and within minutes magic happened!

I plugged in the few cables with no trouble, installed the software, turned on the VCR and hit the 'Capture' button, wondering how long it would go before it crashed like all the other products had done.

But it didn't crash.

It kept going. And going. And going. It got through the whole tape without a hitch or a hiccup and I was dancing with joy!

Trembling with anticipation, I put in the next tape. And the next one. And the next one. Eight VHS tapes in all, some of them fifteen years old, all captured to full MPEG2 glory without so much as a dropped pixel.

I tell you, it was a moment of rapture such as few mortals are privileged to experience.

The included VideoStudio 7 SE and MovieFactory 2 SE software were perfect for simple but efficient editing, transitions, adding audio tracks, menus, etc. I've made several six-disk DVD sets without a problem, and found it easy to go back and make changes or corrections at spots that I felt could be done better. The frame-by-frame editing feature makes perfect transitions a breeze, as well.

The one thing I would have liked to see was the ability to mute a clip's original audio portion so as not to compete with an overlayed musical track, but that's a small thing compared to everything else this package has to offer.

If you want to make movies like Spielberg, you'll have to spend a lot more money, my friends. But for those of us with no such pretensions, who just want a stable and easy way to preserve what is dear to our hearts for future generations and make it look good in the process, you can't do better than this one as far as I'm concerned.

For those who are interested, my system looks like this:

3.0G Pentium 4 CPU with Hyperthreading and 800Mgz FSB
800Mgz FSB Motherboard
1G DDR400 RAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Graphics Card
Dual 120G Hard drives
Sony DRU110a R+-/RW+- Burner

So there you have it. I don't personally care if it doesn't work with any other software, it does what I need it to do right out of the box and that's good enough for me. :)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So good I had to do it twice...........2007-02-06

These speakers are almost legendary. I purchased a set of the Bose Mediamate speakers for my second tour of duty in Iraq. I wanted a set of external speakers for my iPod, and also to hook it up to our TV and game counsel whenever we had some down time between missions to watch some flicks, listen to music or play games. I shared these speakers with my platoon mates and they all agreed that they were an awesome set of speakers. Unlike me, the speakers didn't survive the war in Iraq (I barely made it out of there alive myself!) Due to being constantly bombarded by dust particles and Soldier abuse, it was eventually retired after nearly a year of faithful service. I recently invested in a new Dell system and elected not to get the speakers that come standard with the package deal. Instead, I chose to track down another pair of these Bose Mediamate speakers. Though discontinued and replaced by newer models, you can typically find these still available for sale brand new on ebay at killer prices. Simply put, you'll be hard pressed to find a set of computer speakers that are just so rich and full of great sound. Audiophiles have long dismissed Bose for having great mid-range, but not much to offer in the high and low end. I scoff at such remarks. Bottom line, these are great sounding speakers PERIOD. And they will more than satisfy 95% of the listeners out there. I also currently own the Bose Acoustimas 10 home theater speaker system that I've been using for the last 7 years or so. Would I buy these speakers again? Absolutely. And at current prices, you can't lose.

3 out of 5 stars I have a Bose set like these.......2006-09-22

They have clear sound and are the best I could find for a subwoofer non receiver set-up. I'm not complaining about the clarity or the volume level and they are great for low volume. But while I don't need super loud like a club or a concert of course I refuse to update with the best on the market of these speakers- the say Apple brand are not good enough for me- until they figure out how to give us ones that can make the sound fill the room. I am in a room that is about 14 to 15 feet long and about 9 feet wide right now with the door closed and while the acoustics may be bad in here with the carpet and whatever it defintely sounds like the sound is originating from one side of the room only in a big way. That really is my only complaint. And the companies can try to fool me with the idea they offer room filling sound for the high-end computer speaker and lower volume than the stereo system comparables. You can put this on the box, you can have press releases and conferences. They can have the rep try to assure me this with the training and closing the sales techniques. But unless I can determine this in a closed room for myself at best I am going to be annoyed at the effort of making a return. And while I will appreciate the Rep's behavior and smiles I will be annoyed at the company for not doing better. So these speakers are 5 star and the best I have heard of the computer kind at low volumes in front of me- whether you really need that or can be satisfied with your computer speakers off your computer- I say it's worth the difference. But if you are listening at low volume or with earphones on the go then maybe not. . But they do not fill the room and provide the stereo tricks which are sometimes great and sometimes not as with the Beatles being super separated in a way they don't sound like they are playing together. But you don't get a full sound for your DJ Shadow or Classical or Rock. But if Bose achieves this hat trick bingo you deserve to reap the motherload. That is what is missing filling the room and if anyone could do this at low volumes- all the better. Again otherwise the small Bose speakers now available that you can hold in one hand are amazing. They are especially great for softer Lounge say but if you want the club or larger than life Rock or say Opera or classic with different instruments they still don't fill the room. And I didn't notice much of a difference with theater set-ups either. Oh well- mine will do for me for now especially at lower volumes. With the multitasking and more things we are expected to do at home I can get distrated from a room full of sound anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, fantastic sound........2006-03-28

"Incredible" is the best way to describe these speakers. The sound is crisp and clear, the bass is great and not at all mushy. You can play them low and still get a very enjoyable sound. They work perfectly in the office with my (Creative ZEN Nano plus) mp3 player. They weren't available here so I picked up a pair from Sam's Club(...).
I don't think I've ever been so pleased with a product!

5 out of 5 stars Human Error!!!....not the speakers.......2006-02-01

I own many computer speakers, such as the logitech X-530, Z-5450, and Klipsch. I know how good quality desktops should sound like. When I first tested these "MediaMate Bose" I too heard distortion at low volume and lack of bass just like what the Reviewer: Diane Troxell (Sedona, Arizona) said. The problem here that tricked the reviewer I mentioned was the connection that came with the Bose is a black connector and there is a black colored port on the back of most sound card, which is meant for a subwoofer. So I thought it was colored coated for some weird reason not even thinking about what are the ports on my sound card and what port did the speakers really wanted to get plugged into.......Well it turned out after running my sound card diagnostics I heard nothing coming out of my speakers but the graph showed Audio1 is the green port and thats where a 2.1 connector should be plugged into! Problem solved thank god for Sound Blaster and the speakers sound amazing very powerful bass.

By the way make sure you plug the speakers in the right port and give these speakers a chance by using a decent sound card like a Sound Blaster to go along with it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and Versatile Small Speakers.......2005-01-09

These speakers are apparently no longer available, but I write to recommend them used or their newer model replacements based on a very positive experience owning them for a couple of years.

I bought these speakers originally to supplement the pathetic sound on a Dell Inspiron laptop and have since moved them over to a desktop Mac EMac, and found them to be outstanding for both machines. However, I've also found them portable enough to move them over to our low-end TV when we wanted a big sound out of a DVD or a musical performance, over to an iPod, and off a digital camera to show off some baby videos. The independent volume controls and deep range on the speakers provide lots of flexibility in mixing in a variety of sources, and we've actually found the dual sound inputs on the back (there's an A to B mix switcher to allow simultaneous dual sound sources) to be quite useful. One can, for instance, hook up a connecting line from the stereo and use these as a second set of bookshelf speakers without unhooking it from the computer, and with a flick of the dial on the one speaker, change the mix between the two. We're sort of halfway between using traditional music sources and computer-based sources, so having cables running "both ways" has been nice.

As with most Bose speakers, the range and fidelity are excellent, and it is possible to turn the volume up too loud to the point of distortion, but (thus far) when we've done that there's no apparent damage to the speakers. In other words, for a pair of tiny desktop speakers, they provide more sound and volume than we really ever want or that the source can actually provide with any fidelity.

I particularly like the slight angle to which these speakers are canted, as they point the sound sources towards one's ears. They're also directionally accurate, so if you want to "point" your sound and still get the surround effect, it's easy enough to do.

The RF shielding is outstanding; I have one speaker crammed right up against a traditional CRT, and I've never seen a quaver on the screen, nor has there been any noticeable distortion in the operation of a variety of electronic devices that get thrown into a space close to the speakers.

My only quibble with the provided package is the length of the cables and power cable, a common problem for all the desktop arrangements; one does want to stretch the cables around an astonishing array of stuff sometimes.

In any event, I rarely write reviews of electronics products, but I've been so happy with these speakers I decided to go ahead and make an exception. I've been very disappointed by desktop speakers before, but not this time.
