My Camera SD450 Digital ELPH (5M) is just 15 months old.. Upon searching
from the web, a lot of Canon customers have this E18 error, which pertains
to the lens not extending/retracting properly.. I wasted my money on this.
I thought Canon is a good brand for cameras, apparently not!

I have owned this camera for over a year now. I have over 2000 pictures I have posted on Flickr with it, and many more on my computer. I bought it originally to take on vacation and take pictures of the kids, and it has been in my pocket nearly every day since. It is so small, and so fast, I have no reason to leave it at home.

This is my second digital camera I have owned, but have used many, and using other people's camera, even just to take a few shots for them, reminds me of why I love mine so much.

We've had this camera for over a year and enjoy using it.
I am not an expert, and the camera has features we've never used, but we are very satisfied with it. It is so easy to use and takes good pictures. It is also very small and easy to carry. We bought the Canon leather case for this model, which protects it and is no trouble to use. We also bought a 2-gig SD card, and it holds tons of pictures. We have no complaints!

AMAZING.......2007-08-02

I've had this camera for over 4 Years now. I've taken thousands of pictures and hundreds of videos on vacations, and at college. I have not had a single problem. The battery still lasts me well over a day, even using it constantly. If the battery does get low you just turn off the screen. It has digital macro, which is amazing at close up pictures. You can take night pictures in almost pitch black with the manual settings. Hands down, if your looking for a great camera thats affordable and will last you, you cant go wrong with this. Sure you can get the 5mp or 7.1mp versions, but who actually needs that many megapixles? You wont be disappointed by this camera.

Great Camera if it doesn't stop working..........2007-07-20

I, too, have had issues with the Canon SD400. Out of the blue, it stopped working about a year and a half after purchase. We are big Canon fans - this is our 3rd digital Elph and we have the digital Rebel XT (and Canon lenses). We also have used Canon film cameras in the past. When it stopped working, I typed SD400 not working and was amazed at the number of webpages and upset consumers. Usually you have to search a lot harder to find a problem. For us, we charged it on the American Express which doubles our warranty - so we will get a refund but after talking to Canon support - if we didn't have that option - we would be out of luck. I was highly disappointed (although not surprised after looking through some reputable webpages) with their indifference to the problem and lack of customer service. If you purchase this camera, I would highly recommend using a charge card that doubles your warranty, and have back-up in case it fails at an important occasion.

This camera would easily earn 5 stars except for the fact that it is incompatible with certain SD memory cards. I bought a 4GB high speed card that works great in my cheap Nikon, but this camera informs me that there is a "memory card error" and that the card is locked. I called support, and the man informed me that my card had not been tested with the camera. When I asked for a list of cards that had been tested, he told me to check Google!
If you don't need as much capacity, I had great luck with this camera and a high speed 1 Gig card. Be warned of 'incompatibility' issues and incompetent support.

Excellent Camera.......2007-06-29

I bought this camera about 3-4 years ago. I have an old Canon AE-1 film SLR and that camera is amazing but I really wanted a digital camera so I shopped around and finally decided on a Canon it takes breathtaking pictures and is very compact. The battery doesnt last incredibly long but that is somewhat normal after a some years of charging it over and over. But I still love this camera! Even after 3 years.

Terrible Radio! If you want good quality sound and reliability etc buy vintage........2007-02-17

Was rather excited when purchacing this radio as I had heard about it via talk radio and had visited the CCrane site and read the supposed capability. So on a road trip I stopped in at the CCrane Store in Fortuna and bought it. I babied this radio.
The first year was OK.. then the LCD panel started going. I then started using it plugged in with the AC cord which promptly failed .. which was maddening as I could get it to work by repositioning the contacts at the connectione point but it would not last. So. I remembered that the thing was supposed to get grrrrreat battery life and started using batteries. Huh? The battery life was not very good either.
From day one things that I did not like: Button detent was not right, in other words when you push the station recall buttons they do not work at the first felt detent position you have to push harder. Yuk.
The sound is tinny sounding. As I think back on how they touted the sound I remember that if something is subquality you can fool people by "featuring" it. They promo the sound as "tuned for the human voice". Yea. I suppose. Well.. I bought an old national panasonic radio at an estate sale.. and the tone is magnificent and the battery life is amazing. Did not realize what I had been missing.
The best thing about buying this radio was the friendly folks in the little coastal town of Fortuna. Great to stop in and browse the LED stuff, but sure wish they would quit touting this as there best radio it is just not worth the money.

ABSOLUTE WORST RELIABILITY .......2007-02-02

ABSOLUTE WORST RELIABILITY

I've owned my CC radio for a number of years. Over time every single button has found a way to malfunction. The channel buttons don't change channels but they do change the memory setting so press enough of the buttons and they all end up set on the same frequency. Sometimes pressing a channel select button turns on the alarm.

As I turn the large channel select on the side it goes up a couple of channels then goes back to where I started over and over and over again.

The on/off button only works sometimes or not at all. It's quite a frustration trying to find the right spot on the button to turn it off. Then there's the night light button, which like the on/off button may or may not work.

I called C Crane and Company, explained the problems and lack of reliability and was told for a stiff fee I could return my radio and wait eight weeks to get it back.

WOULD NOT BUY AGAIN.......2005-09-24

After 5 years speaker went bad.Two friends that had the cc radio a yearor two before I did both lost thier display panels after about 3-4 years.For the price should have lasted much longer.I still have a GE super radio 20years old and works fine.

CC Radio Plus AM Reception.......2005-06-25

We purchased a CC Radio Plus about 6 months ago. Unfortunately, we did not return it. I am not at all happy with the radio. A radio this costly should at least have signal seek. The station tuning buttons make a lot of noise (not good if you are listening on earphones to not disturb your bedmate) and are not very responsive. I have three Sony Dream Machine radios, and in our mountain area with difficult reception, the Sonys (1/5 th Size of CC Radio)have AM reception every bit as good as the CC; when the stations get weak, they get weak on CC and Sony. The blasted CC plus display light is a nuisance, always wanting to come on when you turn the radio on.

Just Misses the Mark.......2005-03-10

After an intense day of listening and operating I just recently returned a CC Radio Plus that I had purchased from a local retail store. I really wanted to like this radio but in one critical area it simply did not measure up and because of this I could not justify the price.

I am limiting my comments to the AM radio section of the CC Radio, since that was my primary intended purpose for the radio.

This radio aims at an admirable target: the footprint is quite interesting, the concept of a long distance AM receiver is enticing, and the build quality seems solid.

This well-balanced package sits squarely on a flat surface with rubber feet that grip well and a rubber grip that allows one to lift it. Loaded with a set of batteries, it weighs a lot and gives an impression of quality. A pleasing heft.

The quality also shows in the 'feel' of the tuning knob, a digital encoder with velvety smooth positive detents. The encoder is as good as that on any shortwave receiver I have used.

Everything else, including the tone and volume controls, has a quality feel to it.

Having a digital frequency display is such a great idea for AM listeners who like to log 'DX', or distant stations. There is no question of the frequency and this helps to identify unknown stations. The tuning step is 1 kHz, which is an interesting idea as it allows slight mistuning to avoid close interference on one side of the other of the station you are trying to listen to.

So why didn't I like it? Very simply, I found the audio on the AM band unlistenable.

In an AM radio, there is always a tradeoff between the radio's selectivity-- the ability to pull out a station with strong stations on either side-- and it's audio quality. The narrower the bandwidth or 'window' of the radio, the more effective it is at tuning to, say, 650 kHz with a strong station right next to it at 660 kHz, and not being interfered with by the strong station at 660. However, for good audio reproduction, this window should be as *wide* as possible, so these two requirements are in conflict. In my opinion, the CC Radio is just too narrow for comfortable listening and results in a listener's fatigue very quickly. It is, however, quite respectable in being able to be tuned right up against a strong signal without any bleedthrough. What I am trying to say is: the radio was doing exactly what it was designed to do, it is just that I feel the bandwidth chosen by the design engineers is too narrow for comfortable, casual listening. What suffers most is the high frequencies, meaning that the audio sounds muffled. It is, for example, hard to discern whether an announcer says "fifty" or "sixty".

I wonder if the claim of 'radio tuned to the human voice' is just a marketing spin to explain away this most glaring shortcoming.

This muffled audio can be mitigated a bit by tuning 1 kilohertz higher or lower than the station frequency. For example, if you are listening to a station on 820, tuning to 819 or 821 (with one simple click of the tuning knob) does improve the sound. (There is an electronic reason for this, but I'll spare you the explanation.) However, doing this increases the audio distortion, so that although you lessen the sound's muffled characteristic, you do so at the expense of introducing a raspiness or gritty edge to the sound that the discriminating listener will most certainly notice. I found this too distracting to accept. I found myself listening to the distortion instead of the audio program.

I had really wanted to like this radio for the features that impressed me and that I outlined at the beginning of this review, but it's basic performance in the area of audio sound reproduction (the basic purpose of a radio!) was, in my opinion, not up to standard.

Ironically, on the way home from returning the radio for a refund, I turned on the AM radio in my car. I was able to receive a station (at midday) about 100 miles away with practically no noise, and with excellent audio quality. Why can't we have a table radio that sounds as good as the typical car radio? That, I think, would be the perfect AM radio.

May I suggest you look at the GE Superadio II, which sounds absolutely beautiful, though it is cheaply manufactured and does not have a digital readout. I auditioned both radios side by side and concluded that the Superadio could hear 99% of everything the CC Radio could but at a much more pleasing audio level.

Why clutter your desk with a telephone and an answering system when you can have both in one package? The AT&T 1817 provides an all-digital answering system with time/day stamp and remote control features to make checking your messages easy whether you're at home or on the road.

You control the 1817 with its 13 front-mounted buttons and three switches. There is also a single-character LED display and one LED status indicator. The slim handset is comfortable and easy to hold; the buttons are well positioned and accessible, and the feature set is ideally suited for remote operation of the answering system.

We had to consult the instructions to set the clock, the number of rings, the remote access code, and the outgoing message (which was cumbersome even with the instructions). Note that the instructions don't explain how to reset the machine to its original preprogrammed outgoing message, but we found it after lengthy trial and error. We were able to program the memory dialing intuitively.

I've had a LOT of phone machines and this one is OK, but the audio is really marginal. It's also a bear to program. I always have to find the manual to do the simplest things. It also loses the time - can't they keep the clock alive from phone line power in case you get a glitch in the power line ? I guess not....

You can do better than buy this thing.

My less than a year old AT&T 1817 has earned my complete mistrust. Some important messages became mysteriously inaccessible on it while I was making arrangements to have some major surgery. More have disappeared since.

I will replace this ...as soon as I can find a reliable answering machine.

Save your money for an appliance that will do the job.

I experience a good deal of static while using the telephone. Plus, even with the volume all the way up, I miss parts of the message unless the person leaving the message talks loudly enough so the machine records all of it.

The only problem I had with the phone was the sticking of the #4 but after playing with it the #4 works fine now. All the other features work great. Since this phone is used in my office, I would recommend it to anyone for the home or the office.

The price of the phone is unbeatable.

Every so often, I would actually remember to return a call, ask a question, or just say "Hi, I'm thinking about you" to my stepdaughter Gina. Distance does not really make the heart grow fonder sometimes it simply distances us from our loved ones. One day, after trying to reach her on ten different occasions I had this answering machine shipped to her as a gift.

This changed her thoughts from "You never return my calls" to "Hi. You called!"

The device is simple, easy to install, and does not require the plethora of tapes that older systems did. You do have to record your own greeting unless you mind the digital mechanical voice. It is not a bad voice, particularly if you like the futuristic machines R2D2 and C3PO (Star Wars androids).

I have noticed that some of the reviewers for this particular machine did not have quite the success that I have had. Unfortunately in manufacturing there are times when a lemon squeezes through quality control, but they can be returned. However, Gina received her gift at the end of February, and loves it. She has never had a problem. She knows the day and time a call came through, has programmed the nine number memory module for speed dial, and, since we live in the land of rolling blackouts -- California, has used the Message Guard feature.

This answering machine can also be used to avoid unwanted calls, because you hear what the caller is saying. Personally, I hate to pick up the phone and have a digital direct marketing service determined to sell me some product that I absolutely have to have even though I did not know about it before they called. These are the calls that are happily limited to no more than four-minutes, along with all others. I have discovered that 240 seconds is enough for any friend to leave their name, number, and a brief message. This also means that if I by some horrible quirk of fate I get 59 messages, I can just pull the plug and delete the entire data base . . . then "embarrassingly" state that my answering machine lost calls. Who has not wanted to do that?

You can feel as if your are riding Pegasus through the sky, and when you return to earth you can decide which calls you want to return.
