Wireless Internet as a Fashion Statement.......2004-06-11

Apple makes cool stuff, no doubt about it. But one of their coolest products is the Airport Extreme system of wireless internet.

Using the Airport Extreme Base Station, in addition to an Airport Extreme reception card in your computer, you can move all around your home or office without the messy clutter of ethernet cables or connection equipment.

Setup is a snap using the included instructions. Within minutes you'll be surfing the web and accessing data wirelessly.

The only setback is the relative sensitivity of the Airport system. It doesn't like being near other computer components or going through walls. But, when push comes to shove, the unit does its job.

Overpriced and unreliable.......2004-05-12

Apple Airport Base Stations have a history of overheating and ruining the electronics inside. I lost a ABS "snow" unit this way. Fortunately, I found at least two online businesses devoted to repair of base stations, or else buying unrecoverable units at salvage prices.

Apple Airport Base Stations are often than twice the price of equivalent devices from other manufacturers. The features of the Apple product do not justify such a huge disparity in price. You're just paying for the brand name.

Also, think twice before investing in a 802.11g wireless router, because if you use it for Internet via broadband like DSL or cablemodem, you are limited by the bandwidth of the slowest part of the system. DSL/cable bandwidth is typically about one-fifth of the 802.11g bandwidth. So you aren't going to surf the net faster. A faster router helps multiple computers on your local network communicate with each other (for instance, if you host multiplayer computer game parties), but connecting to the outside world doesn't improve. Of course, if you don't have broadband and your router connects via modem, the bottleneck is even worse.

Given Apple's track record of poor quality, premium prices, and dubious benefit of the "extreme" model, I do not recommend buying this product. Get a Linksys or Netgear 802.11b router for $40 or so, and you'll be just as happy. That's what I did, and I'm sending my ABS 'snow' unit in for salvage.

Worth it.......2004-02-10

The wireless revolution has seriously altered the way I work. It didn't seem like it was that big of a deal, to be able to work anywhere in the house on a laptop. And then I was home over Thanksgiving and tried my father's - it was incredible. So, soon after I had my own and I love it - I even ended up getting another one for my wife's laptop.

Whether it's browsing amazon.com late at night in bed, checking morning email in the kitchen while the kids run around, or being able to set up a writing desk anywhere in the house without worrying about an accessible internet port - the airport system is awesome. Even if you only have a desktop computer it's worth it - you can to put the computer in a place where there's no internet plug, without the 40 foot cord draping your wall to connect it. All in all, a wireless system may seem extravagant, but once you have one you'll wonder how you got by without it.

The airport card, along with the base station, allows you to connect several computers, even ones that don't have wireless cards in them (i.e., we have two laptops on the wireless system, and then one iMac that doesn't have an airport card is plugged directly into the base station). You can print, scan - anything - wirelessly, as long as those extra components are connected to the base station.

If you have a big house and the base station won't be centrally located, you may want to look into the antenna. I have a 2500 square foot house and the base station is at one end of it. I can get access from anywhere in the house without the extra antenna, though in one or two places it's a weak signal. My father's house, on the other hand, is over 5000 square feet and the base station is at a far end - you can't even get a signal on the other side of the house. However, he purchased the antenna and the signal is now very strong wherever you are. A warning - you should make sure your airport network is password protected, especially if you get the antenna. The signal will be broadcast through half your neighborhood and if not protected, people can get on and use your airtime, clogging up your bandwidth.

Make sure you get the right card! There's the airport extreme card and the regular airport card (I believe they are both compatible with either base station). Check Apple's website for direct compatibility between your computer and the two different cards. They are different sizes and will only fit in the right kind of slot.

One final word - I've heard from others that certain products from Net Gear or other wireless manufacturers accomplish the same thing as the airport card and base station for much cheaper. I can't attest to the validity of this, but it might be worth looking into. I'd exercise extreme caution, since if you go with Apple products it will be covered with tech support, even if it's more expensive. And putting third party hardware in your computer will likely void the warranty on your computer.

Easy Set Up; Looks Good; Needs to be Reset From Time to Time.......2004-01-05

The airport base station looks cool and was very easy to set up. It sends out a strong signal. The only downside is that from time to time it stops working and I need to unplug it and plug it back in again and then all is well. I have to do this once a week or once every two weeks. This is a weakness but I am still glad I have it.

This system with the dvd player is incredible. I have plugged it into my mac and play all my i-tunes from it, and also have it connected to a projection screen tv. (Since I already have all my music digitized, I saw no reason to buy the upgraded model which would digitize all the songs directly onto the Bose receiver.)

The demonstration I heard in the local Bose store sold me on the system, and when I got home and pulled it out of the box, I had it up and running in about 20 minutes.

The system comes with Bose's own, "adaptiq" system which allows the system to calibrate the sound system to fit your room.

Basically they give you a headset that is outfitted with little microphones that allows the Bose receiver to listen to what the system sounds like in different parts of the room. It then optimizes the output of the five speakers to make sure the best sound reaches those areas evenly. You pick five places where you think you will watch movies or listen to music from, and you sit in each one for about a minute while the speakers emit weird sounds, and then presto, it is calibrated and you can have perfect sound throughout the room.

I was a little skeptical about it until I tried it out, and watched my first movie. It is better sound than any movie theater I have been to.

If you have the means to purchase this system and you are serious about sound, I recommend this product without reservation. I also suggest you get the whole Bose system over the speakers and a regular receiver because of the added Bose technology. The speakers by themselves are great but the Bose receiver makes them unbelievable.

My wife was a bit miffed at the price, but agrees that the sound is amazing. It has turned our weekly family movie night into a neighborhood event.

This card is awful. I have a 3 megabit cable connection, however when using this card, I can only download files at about 20 kilobytes/second as opposed to 300+ on my other cards.

I would highly recommend against purchasing this card. I have a wireless network with several clients and the machine with this card gives me the most grief. I have 2 problems with this card. I always randomly get disconnected and then the connection immediately comes back. Also the driver for this card has a pretty bad memory leak. I've spoke with tech support about 3 months ago and the issue has still not been resolved.

Setting up the 360 was easy--we just plugged in the AC adapter and telephone cord. The backlit LCD display prompted us to set the clock, which we were able to do without the manual. We did glance at the manual before entering the caller ID settings, but the instructions were straightforward.

Programming the memory dialing was almost intuitive. The process was a slight variation of AT&T's usual method of pressing the Prog button, dialing the number, pressing the Mem button, and then pressing one of the buttons to store the number. This time we had to press Prog again instead of the Mem button.

Setting the clock-radio alarm was a little unusual. On the LCD screen, the radio is called Alarm A, and the buzzer is called Alarm B. (Why not Radio and Buzzer?) In our test, the telephone sounded clear and bright; the lighted handset worked on ordinary line voltage, requiring neither the AC adapter nor the battery; and even without the 9-volt battery, all settings were preserved without AC power for a few minutes. The caller-ID/call-waiting feature includes a bright indicator to let you know you have new caller ID entries in the history list or that a new call is coming in (if you're already on the phone).

I purchased this item about 18 months ago and I'm not particularly satisfied with it. It's a great idea - a phone and clock radio all in one - a great space saver. Unfortunately, this is not the model to buy. The display screen is at a difficult angle to see unless you raise your head. The controls are not particularly intuitive to use. The worst aspect of the unit, however, is the volume control. It is very imprecise and the volume can't be set low enough without cutting out completely. Don't waste your money....

I have not liked this unit since I bought it 18 months ago. The programming is not intuitive at all. Secondly, the snooze and alarm buttons are difficult to find if the unit is on the left side of the bed. Also, by the size of the display you'd think it would be easy to read. However I cannot see it from my bed--a foot away--let alone across the room. A black display with lighted letters/numerals would be better. Then yesterday I unplugged the phone as instructed to replace the 9V backup battery. When I plugged it back in, the light came on but there is no display. The radio won't work and neither will the alarm. All I have left is a phone. I bought this unit for the combination of features/price but I guess you get what you pay for!

Based upon other customers reviews, I bought this product because I wanted a digital radio that would reliably wake me up in the morning. The radio quality is the only redeeming feature I can see in this product. It is worthless as a clock - the face is angled so one must be above it and within 2 feet to read the pale display of the time. The illuminated display area is too bright making sleep all but impossible while the readout is practically invisible. Contrary to the advice of AT&T tech support, the alarm MUST be activited each night even when the word ALARM remains in the display area. The volume control is poor, but that seems the least of this products problems. Too much technology and too little common sense!
