Customer Reviews:
Don't buy if you need wma dmr or customer support.......2005-09-28
The unit works well for playing MP3 music and FM radio but, if you need to listen to any products with digital rights management - forget about it. Further, when you try to get any answer from their customer support group - don't hold your breath. The built-in speaker makes this unit special, it is too bad that that Encross seems unwilling to support DRM or answer email.
SAFA SR-620F - great for price-reduced closeout product.......2005-09-12
The SAFA SR-M620F is a pretty decent MP3/WMA player. The voice recording at 32k is excellent. The headphones included are surprising efficient and sound good. The built-in speaker is very useful but to get any FM stations, you must use the headphones. If not for the integral speaker and low price, I would have bought (and may still) a 1GB iAudio U2 or Creative Muvo Slim.
Navigation of the SR-M620F is a bit clumsy and sometimes parts of the display printing is so tiny it is hard to see even with my reading glasses (optimized for reading 10 inches away.)
I am disappointed that it does not and WILL NOT support the Ogg codec. USB 1.1 is also a little slow but with only 256MB it is not that bad.
You can get 4 rechargeable AAA batteries for under $10 at any Walmart etc. to use the recharge-via-USB feature. For my car, I also found a $1 USB/cigarette lighter adapter for charging the battery at the 99 Cent Only store.
I used the free EAC "Exact Audio Copy" ripper set to record with the built-in "external" Microsoft WMA9 codec. I recorded my favorite music CD songs into VBR 96kHZ format. This was still pretty good audio quality for most songs and yielded file sizes much smaller than MP3. This way I could maximize the rather small 256MB memory space.
I haven't yet tried direct MP3 recording to the device via the 1/8" stereo input. As a musician/singer, that could be very handy if it works well. I have used the stereo audio out as an insert into my Roland AC-60 acoustic amp and that works well for jamming along to recorded MP3 tracks. However, note that the SAFA output is impedance-matched for headphones and not for audio equipment. Because of this, the bass is lacking if you hook it up to your home stereo system.
Overall, a great device for the price. Maybe not too user friendly for beginners, but with very good sound and quite a few features. You can download updated firmware at the safa.co.kr web site (read the manual page 55 before installing).
Recharging does work with US batteries & great rewind feature.......2005-09-09
Not sure what problems the other reviewer had, but the recharging works great with Energizer rechargable AAA batteries.
Awesome player like the others have said.
A great plus for people who listen to audio books broken into many small files is that this player will, when the user is cueing back and hits the beginning of the file, keep cueing into the end of the previous file. So if some interruption came and you missed the last few seconds of a 10 minute file and are in the next file you can just back it up. With other players you have to go back to the start of that 10 minute file and FF all the way to near the end.
Rechargeable battery not sold in US.......2005-08-02
One reason I chose this player is because it claims to be rechargeable through USB. But to do so, you need a recahrgeable battery, aaa/r03/um-4, which seems not to be sold in the US. I tried the other type of recahrgeable battery that is sold in US, but didn't work.
If I knew this, I would have bought other player from established brand.
Excellent MP3 Player with Loads of Features.......2005-07-14
[...] I also have iRiver iFP-780, another feature loaded MP3 player but with 128mb memory. Here are my observations after played with it for one night.
This player is very similar to iRiver 700 series ultra portable player! I am wondering they use the same components inside.
Compare to iRiver
-made in Korea
-sound quality is excellent, equivalent to iRiver.
-almost same overall dimensions, but looks a big fatter because the body is curved outward, not inward as in the case for iFP-700 series
-same screen size, but curved outward, light gets reflected more (not as good). Serveral backlight colors to choose from, cool.
-FM reception/sensitivity not as good
-same number of buttons
-use one AAA rechargable (included), charged through a USB port, 9 hours playback (iRiver uses one AA, 40 hours with Alkerline battery)
-no support OGG,
-can be plug into a USB port directly to transfer files/music FROM/TO a PC. iRiver uses a special cable and software to transfer music file TO the player ONLY.
-internal speaker, fairly clear sound, COOL.
-internal speaker is contained in a removed cap that should be removed so that the player can plug directly into a usb port, iRiver use special usb cable.
-voice recording through the internal mic. is excellent, better than iRiver, very clear, automatic sensitivity adjustment works well.
-voice recording through an external stereo mic. (I got from ebay $24) is also excellent, much BETTER than iRiver
-there is a software for remote pc control through pcnetpc.com. Haven't installed on my pc yet.
-turning on the player is a bit slower
-necklace type earphone, good or bad depends on how you use it. The cord is too short if you put the player in your pant's pocket. The length is enough if you hang the player on your neck or put it in your upper shirt pocket
-capable of lyrics display, haven't tried it yet
-can create a play list containing up to 50 songs
Construction quality is comparable. iRiver seems a bit sturdy.
Sound quality through the included earphone is similar.

Product Description
The DM605 S2 is the answer to the need for deep, controlled bass extension when there is not the physical room to incorporate a separate subwoofer. An internal 130W amplifier is used to power the two bass drivers to give truly extended bass output. The midrange and tweeter drivers are driven conventionally from the system amplifier, while the two bass drivers are driven by the internal amplifier, which incorporates variable equalization to give truly extended and tunable bass performance. Bass quality is enhanced by Flowport technology, which smoothes the passage of air over both the internal and external port flares to reduce chuffing noises and reduce compression at higher levels. A separate line level LFE input can be driven directly from the subwoofer output of an AV processor.

Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2007-02-14
After four months of use,it suddenly went crazy. When I installed a new ink cartridge after it ran out of ink,it keeps stating "NO CARTRIDGE" and stopped functioning.I had my friends checked it, and still not working--keeps flashing the stupid "NO CARTRIDGE".What a waste of money.I will never buy anything from BROTHER.And by the way, the message center of the machine is also crappy.
IntelliFAX-2440c.......2007-01-23
This unit works good but is hard to set up for the technologically disadvantaged.
Do not buy this one - Brother lost another customer.......2006-12-09
I purchased this machine in February 2006 as a replacement unit. From the beginning, I never got the colors to print correctly. (I did try following the instructions of the manual, and of the customer service reps, changing ink cartridges, some that I bought, others that were sent by Brother's customer service reps, plugging and unplugging, changing the paper, etc. Too many hours, no satisfactory results). To solve the problem, I bought an Epson color printer/copier.
I thought that at least I could use the other features i.e. phone and answering machine.
The answering machine cuts off the messages and I have never been able to retrieve the messages remote.
The little that gets stored is impossible to understand because at playback the sound is so poor that many words are lost (it's the same effect as if you'd be using a cell phone and there is a bad signal, although it's not a bad signal, is a bad recording/playback component).
The speaker phone is also bad, I tried to use it to speak with the customer service rep and it was impossible to make sense of what he was saying because words got lost...
The replacement unit they sent got the colors correct, but the answering machine does not work and the speaker phone also drops the words although not as bad as the first machine.
Stay away from this product.
Since their customer service reps do not help, you have to make a decision quickly: to keep the old broken machine, or to keep the newer broken machine, because if you delay your decision past 3 days, they will charge you for the replacement unit. Even if you send the machine back after the 3 days they still charge with a $30 fee.
Buy the way, what you get as a replacement unit is a remanufactured machine (another machine with half fixed problems). They will not provide you with a product registration card for the "new" machine.
Brother lost a customer.......2006-05-18
This machine has made me start a personal boycott against Brother. In 5 months, it has been replaced twice (aka 3 broken machines) with each machine getting phone tech support. It has cost the small office I work for about $400 in man-hours, I should have just bought a new fax for that price.
The problem?: answering machine cuts people off. When I call tech support, I can now recite their troubleshooting manual for them. If the only problem were a broken machine, I wouldn't be so upset. But their service center is horrible. Obviously, their fix ain't workin' for me, but they recite it like drones. And forget reaching anyone with any authority. And in my head, I actually say a prayer of thanks if the person I reach doesn't have a foreign accent!
Attempts at expressing my frustration with going through 3 machines may as well be shouted at a brick wall, they calmly repeat "please press menu set, 2, 7, 2" "But I just did that with Nan 5 minutes ago" "Please press menu set..." "...2,7,2 yes, 180 seconds, stop exit, now what?"
So after wasting almost 3 times as much money as the machine cost on man-hours, Brother's next solution is an hour drive to a service center (leaving a home business without a fax!) or we can pay the extra charge for on-call service (which amounts to around $130-wow, that's what this piece of junk cost in the first place!). But they'll pay for a technician to look at it after that. Gee, thanks, Brother.
I think I'll pass. Maybe Sanyo makes a fax/ answering machine that can do its job...
All I needed, and more !.......2005-12-21
After 15 years of use (sort of old fashioned, I use things until they are really useless or completely broken and cannot be repaired) of another Brother machine (the intellifax 820), I thought it was time for a nice upgrade.
I chose this machine over a Canon for instance because of the price, but also because I wanted to use it as a telephone and an answering machine. I couldn't be happier after 3 months of use. It is extremely complete and versatile (phone + answering machine + fax + copier), unbeatable for the price. The machine, once in place, is also compact, unlike (yes, you guessed) most of the Canon models, which take so much space.
Down the toilet goes thermal paper, of course. But that is not all. As compared to my old 820, this one has a speakerphone that works both ways. By that, you can not only hear what is happening on the line, but also talk without picking up the receiver (couldn't do it with the 820). It also has a caller id function, so you see (if part of your package with the phone company) if those nasty telemarketers are bugging you. Plus, it has a message center memory. With all the hurricanes and power outages for whatever reason, this is very practical; all your messages will be kept in memory for 24 hours when the electricity goes out !
This machine also makes nice copies, as long as you stay in black&white (definition and consistency are not good in colour). Copies can either be made once at a time, or by putting them all on the flatbed and boum, there they go in line. Just like at the copy shop, where they have those expensive machines that are often out of order. I haven't tried sending colour faxes, but if I do, I'll come back and edit this comment. No problems sending multiple pages faxes though, thanks again to the flatbed system. Pages go out in a zoom, but the rest depends on the quality of the phone line, and obviously on the quality of the machine at the other end.
A couple of drawbacks on the machine : the buttons are a bit small, and you have to be sure you are pressing the right number; also, the direct memory numbers are less than on my old 820 (you only get 6, where I had 20 on the 820) even though on aggregate you have more on this machine (you have to go into another feature); finally, I am under the impression the cartridges are going to be costly, even though I don't use or make colour copies or faxes. You see, the system does a sort of automatic cleaning every once in a while, and you can hear it starting to get in motion, even if it is very brief.
Overall, if the three things I have just told you do not bother you, go for this machine, it is ideal for small businesses or someone who wants a multifunction machine at home, without taking up up vital space on your desk and you do not have to go out to the copy shop anymore. You can even connect this machine to your computer center (something I still have to do, just like the previous reviewer). And Brother is the specialized brand in these products, so you can hardly go wrong.
