Fuji's FinePix 4900 is one of a new style of consumer digital cameras appearing on the market. Borrowing features from both film SLRs and point-and-shoot digital cameras, these hybrids offer an extremely potent set of features in a compact package and will undoubtedly steer even more film photographers over to digital.

The 4900 features an impressive 6x optical zoom lens plus a 3.7x digital zoom. Shots are captured on a SuperCCD sensor that generates images at resolutions of up to 2,400 x 1,800 pixels, producing photo-quality prints at sizes of 8 by 10 and beyond. By default, the camera is as easy to operate as a point-and-shoot, but virtually every function is manually controllable. Shutter-priority and aperture-priority modes are available, and the ISO, focus, white balance, and exposure compensation can all be adjusted. A pop-up flash features slow-sync, fill flash, and red-eye reduction, and a hot shoe on top of the camera allows you to use a dedicated flash unit.

Fuji has replaced the traditional optical viewfinder with a camcorder-style electronic viewfinder (EVF)--a tiny LCD display inside the eyepiece. The benefits of this arrangement are obvious: the EVF provides a traditional SLR-style through-the-lens viewing experience, works well even in bright sunlight, lets you hold the camera in the more stable, traditional position, and helps to extend battery life. However, there are some situations in which the EVF is inferior to a traditional optical viewfinder: if you're shooting in near darkness, it's virtually impossible to see through the viewfinder, and even in brighter light, the images tend to look grainy and washed out compared to the images in the 2-inch LCD on the back of the camera.

The 2.4-megapixel SuperCCD sensor was developed by Fuji and is only found on Fuji cameras. Instead of using a traditional grid of square pixels, it features octagonal pixels arrayed diagonally. Fuji claims that this system offers improved sensitivity and image detail over a standard CCD. To prove this point, the camera interpolates its 2.4-megapixel images up to 4.3 megapixels at the highest-quality setting. Independent tests typically place these interpolated images on a par with pictures from a 3.3 megapixel camera.

The 4900 is comfortable to hold, and its controls are logically arranged. Though it's bigger and heavier than a point-and-shoot, it's still smaller and lighter than an SLR, and the design feels good in your hands. The battery compartment forms a comfortable pistol grip for your right hand, and your left hand will naturally want to cradle the barrel. Fuji thoughtfully included dual zoom controls--one under your right thumb on the back of the camera, and the other under your left thumb on the barrel of the lens. An easy-to-reach thumb dial on the top of the camera controls shutter speed or aperture, depending upon your shooting mode, and a ring on the front of the lens manually adjusts focus.

Files can be saved at numerous resolutions and levels of compression, from a massive uncompressed 2,400 x 1,800 TIFF file (one shot nearly fills the included 16 MB SmartMedia card) to basic 640 x 480 JPEG files appropriate for emailing. The camera also features a movie mode for creating low-resolution silent film clips.

If you're an amateur photographer who loves using single-lens-reflex cameras but don't want to spend several thousand dollars on a true digital SLR, Fuji's FinePix 4900 offers most of the functionality of a digital SLR at a fraction of the price. The lens is not removable, but its 35-210mm range (35mm equivalent) is flexible enough to use in nearly any situation.

Great camera.......2006-05-16

This review is probably a few years late.

Fuji 4900 is great camera. Lots of different modes of operation, easy to switch different modes of flashes (auto, force on, force off, red eye, slow flashes). Impressive 6X optical zoom.

There is a adapter tube and clear UV filter lens at ebay.com, they are reasonably priced.

One note about batteries. Make sure you get batteries with > 2000 mA-hour. There are batteries that look the same, yet only has 1200 mA-hour, i.e. lasts half as long.

A really impressive camera.......2005-11-28

I don't claim to be all that knowledgable about cameras, films and photography, but for the uninitiated, this is as good a camera is you could possible need if you're anything like me. My 70 year old father, who'd not taken pictures in years, picked up the basics pretty quick.

The camera is old and a bit clunky for today's streamlined standards, but for someone like me it makes it harder to drop and the photos are as good as newer models (if not better).

The biggest grumble for me is the memory card. It takes SmartMedia cards which are smaller (memorywise) and more expensive.

Fuji + Epson.......2003-08-23

As all of the previous reviewers have stated, the Fuji 4900 is an excellent camera.
Coupled with the Epson Stylus Photo 1280, I have made excellent 16" x 20" prints that look as good or better as film prints.
My Epson Stylus Photo 820 does an excellent job with 8" x 10" prints as well.
The Fuji 4900 is just an excellent camera EXCEPT for the poor battery life. I got tired of the constant need to recharge the NP-80s ( I have 6) so I bought a PowerBank MH-DPB180M battery pack from J&R Electronics and no longer have that problem.

I just wanted to let everyone interested in this camera to be aware of something. This camera uses a 2.45 Megapixel image sensor and interpolates that to create a 4.3 MP image. I thought it was worth noting since the FinePix s602 was put into the 3-3.9 megapixel category, even though it has the capability to produce a 6 megapixel image. Outstanding Image Quality.......2002-12-09

The image quality produced by this camera is spectacular. However, I think Fuji has some scope for improvement in terms of the user interface. I find setting the time and selecting the image quality to be a bit tedious.

Just set up my Mick Fleetwood Model 12 today and can't believe that such an inexpensive unit can produce such high quality sound. I hooked my Fleetwood Model 12 to my computer. Best music ever from the PC and Mac (there's multiple connections so both are hooked up at the same time). I also have the iPod connector always plugged in too so all I do is pop the earphone jack into the pod and I get instant tunes - So that's superior sound from PC/Mac/iPod without any wire fumbling. Have heard $5,000 systems that can't touch this one. Great buy!

The best kept secret in audio.......2005-08-02

I finally discovered this after reading about a semi permanent installation in "Cruising World".

I bought one for the boat and I have since attached another to my computer which I drive from iPod or iTunes respectively. The computer one I also use to take for presentations etc...

The sound is absolutely first class and way above this price level.

I can't believe that these have been around 14+ years and it took this long for a frequent traveler to discover them.

I can recommend absolutely without reservation.

I purchased this Portable speaker system after my last hotel stay. I have a portable MP3 jukebox (Creative Nomad) and brought along my old cheap computer speakers. Now my wife and I are music lovers and I tend to have Champaign ears. I just couldn't take that crappy, shallow, tinny no base sound anymore!! Now I have been eyeing The Model 12's for a couple of years (Now called the Mick Fleetwood signature edition) now if Mick is endorsing them you know they have to be great!! And let me tell you they are Amazing sounding! Great base and just a full deep sound, I am blown away with the sound this portable set up throws out there. Now let me just say it is a bit hefty in weight. This is not a cheaply made set up!! The case is heavy duty so it can take a beating and the satellites are a bit heavy (typical great quality construction from Cambridge soundworks) The amp is nice with separate bass, treble and balance controls and 4 selectable options for sound input (CD Aux1, Aux2 and tape)This system can be used with any rca type connection. I highly recommend this portable system if you want great sound on the road (or at home for that matter)

The ultimate road system.......2002-11-26

I travel 1000s of miles each year, and would not go anywhere without this system. It is a bit heavy- but that's because its a true industrial strength on the road system. When I fly, it checks easily, and can get bounced around. The hard case shows some wear, but the sound is still perfect. Plugs into portable CD or MP3 jukebox. I've also used it for work events to play music for a room of 300 people. I have a few friends who are in the music and recording business, and they travel with this system. It's also the preferred road system for the concert road crews - and believe me, they know what stands up.

The previous reviewer is absolutely right. This card is faster, cheaper and easier to use than the Airport cards. In fact this is what Apple is now selling to its customers since the original Airport 802.11b card is no longer available. (Of course, in typical Apple fashion, they are selling it for three times as much as everyone else!)

An added bonus of this card is the fact that it also works on PC's as well. Great card!

After suffering for 3 years with the built-in (and overpriced) Apple airport card in a Titanium Powerbook G4, which had a range of about 10 meters and kept getting worse, I ordered this card for $ 12.99 and am now enjoying wireless connectivity all over my house and back yard (a radius of approx 70 meters, with lath-and-plaster walls). I tried it with both an old SMC 802.11b router and a Netgear WGT624 802.11g router and get a slightly longer range with the latter.

This is so cool. I have an 867MHz TiBook and the cheapo wireless PC card I had broke. So I came across the Asante AL5403-XG. What first got me was the promise that it is supported under OS X. And it is. I'm running 10.4 and it acts just like an Airpot Card. Seamless.

It was only AFTER I ordered it that I noticed that it is 802.11G. That makes the deal just that much sweeter.
