A good idea that disappoints.......2006-02-10

I received this as a gift a month ago, so I can't fairly gripe about the cost. But it's certainly an overpriced paperweight. I compare it to the Galileo thermometer (also a gift) it sits next to on my desk -- attractive and a conversation piece, but minimal practicality.

Cards inside the package indicates I can set displays for stock prices, today's high temperature (although the Ambient website says current temperature), weekend forecast, air quality, pollen count, and a dozen other things. Neat idea. But I will have to pay a monthly fee (I get the first three months free) to use the majority of them. And the website doesn't list all of the choices I have on my cards. But it does list a choice of chances that "Bush will be re-elected." Huh? At least it correctly predicts that as zero.

The website also correctly indicates that my portfolio is up 1.25 percent on this particular day, and it indicates that my orb should be light green. However, it's been red all day, and it's been off on other days as well. Unless the accuracy improves, I won't be signing on for the monthly service. And while I initially thought this would be a great gift idea for someone else, that won't be happening unless I see significant improvements.

The orb works as defined. It's usefulness is open to interpretation. Out of the box, I believe it to be an overpriced conversation piece.

The quality is not outstanding. The pager card had come loose in the one I received and was bouncing around in the orb. It worked once I reassembled it. I'm not quite sure what justifies the high price, I can only guess that it must be to subsidize the network costs.

The ambient site itself seems a little disorganized and the community forums are pretty inactive. This leaves me uncertain of the viability of the company itself.

It should be noted that ambient sells an add-on card that allows programmers to control the orb via serial connection. This allows programmers to turn it into a more useful conversation piece (regardless of ambient's future).

At first I thought this was a joke. The more I read the more I was sure it was. What a waste of money. I especially loved the review from the guy whose life was enhanced so much by this stupid thing because he now can choose the right clothing for the weather without having to do anything "time-consuming." What? Like look out the window maybe? Give me a break.

Good way to watch the stock market.......2005-06-10

The Orb gives me a good way to do my job without having to think about how the market is doing. I just glance over at it and know which way the market is going. It's also a great conversation piece. There are people that stop by my office just to see what color it is that day, even if they have no interest at all in the stock market.

The first one I received liked to display everything on the red side of the rainbow, even when the market was going up. It took just one email to very quickly get a replacement. The service was amazing.

I am still a little bothered by the tendency for the orb to display the reds stronger than the greens. It takes a really strong up day on the market to move the light from yellow towards green, but a slightly down day will shade the light towards orange and then red when it's strongly down. This is probably due to the principles of the color wheel and is not a problem intrinsic to the orb itself.

Weather function limited to 4 cities for free.......2004-10-29

I think it was NYC, Atlanta, Chicago and San Fran? (maybe LA?) got free updates, otherwise you needed to subscribe to the monthly fee. I was disapointed, returned it.

Functionality-wise it is pretty neat, and did work well. Would consider buying it again if they added Boston to the roster of free cities.

Wish I Could Give It A 6.......2005-12-03

Worked right out of the box! I took it to my sister's for Thanksgiving in hopes it would pick up a signal so I could get her one, but she was out of range. I am glad to be in a receivable area. Tonight I finally got registered and played with the channels. Programming is easy. I had the default [Atlanta] forecast for several weeks and we had the right gear from a glance at the color, but I figured we'd get the more accurate Gainesville forecast. I should mention Gainesville is in the NE GA mountains; there IS no accurate forecast for mountains as far as lightning storms or tornadoes, but we won't have many of those until March. Programming the change took less than 10 mins, and most of that was me playing and waiting for about 2 mins for the signal to get down to my beacon. It changed to blue out of a possible 3 colors, I clicked the radio box for mine and a message told me to press the yellow button on the bottom, which I did. Now I have the Gainesville forecast. Talk about easy! By the way, I told them in the registration process that my favorite color was violet, and I swear, the blue was very near violet! The beacon makes a wonderful nightlight, especially with 3 brightness choices. A clear glass half-sphere the size of a quarter holds a card with the chart of what the colors mean, but I hardly look at it, since I am already used to the color scheme of every weather map from papers to TV. The clever glass card-holder reflects the color nicely, and is beautiful in itself. Back to the Beacon, it puts on quite a light show when you first plug it in; alternating white and red for a few mins while it acquires the signal is the first part. My sister complained that would make her migraines worse if it flashed like that, but I explained that it's just when you set it up. Then, you have a slowly fluctuating glow from purple through the rainbow to red and around again, which fascinated me and my 15-year old daughter. After just a few mins of that, the color for whatever you're tracking appears, and you get changes as it does. After several weeks of steady operation, we don't see a lot of changes, but I noticed some changes from blue to green and back through an evening or two. The pulses when rain is in the forecast are slow and from dark to light of the color, and that is beautiful, too. I also have migraines, and the Beacon doesn't bother me as far as that. What amazes me is how it can operate day and night for weeks and it doesn't get warm! The adapter is pink. I wish other electronics had colored adapters. I don't usually make purchases of this type, but I use it more than my year-old weather station with the remote sensor, a birthday present. A glance, and I know whether to wear a sweater or bring out the heavy coat and scarf :)

Worked Perfectly & Wirelessly to Boot.......2004-12-31

I read the negative reviews after getting this for Christmas from my girlfriend and was braced to have problems. But, if you can set up your internet service you'll have no problems with this if it's not defective. I went to their website, registered, and customized the unit and had zero problems. Works flawlessly for my local weather (on Cape Cod, so we're out in the boonies) or for homeland security- the two custom channels I tried. I'd love to complain but I can't- great concept and carried out well.

Not as advertised.......2004-11-19

The weather beacon is advertised as being able to convey "your weather." Well, the truth is that the free service only gives weather in select regions. If you don't live near the originating city for that region how does that do you any good? Is it any value to get the weather for a city possibly hundreds of miles away? Also, my unit was defective in that it would only display one color. Ambient said that they knew there were problems with quite a few units. However in 3 weeks, they never offered a solution. You can pay to get weather in your area but for $179 I feel this should be included with the product. Finally, the temperature that is indicated by color is rather difficult to decipher.

"Works right out of the box"? -- Hardly........2004-06-06

I bought one of these weather beacons. It turned out to be defective. Returned it for another one, which was also defective. Ambient Designs likes to claim that their products "work right out of the box." In my case, nothing could be further from the truth. Just look at the troubleshooting guide on the company's web site -- it's a mile long. (Yes, I followed the guide -- to no avail.) Obviously the company is aware of many bugs involved with the weather beacon. It would seem that they rushed out a product that is great in theory but very unreliable in reality. Don't even think of giving one of these as a gift, unless you want the recipient to face endless hassles.

Cool and unearthly.......2003-12-05

As a pure design object, Ambient has hit a home run with this. The soft glow it gives off in a darkened room is subtle and exquisite. It fascinates visitors, who immediately gravitate toward. Their assessment of "cool!" vaults to "COOL!!!''when they understand its functionality. Every morning on my way to pick up the paper, I immediately know the temperature. Brilliant.

Well worth it!.......2007-06-04

It took me about 30 minutes to get this set up and working, including the time it took to install two printer drivers on one laptop. The instructions are a little sparse so a few key things to keep in mind when you are installing it:

1) Load the printer drivers on every PC you want to tie into the server BEFORE loading the Belkin server software. Hook the PC or laptop directly to the printer(s) via a USB cable FIRST. Test print to make sure it is working properly with a normal USB cable hookup. This can save you problems later.

2) After you ensure each PC or laptop has the respective driver(s) installed and will print to each printer with a cable hook up, disconnnect and connect the printer(s) USB cable into the back of the Belkin server. Then plug in its power cable and watch it light up. (the Belkin installation software will tell you to do this in the first step, after it warns you to ensure the printer drivers are installed first)

You do not run your wireless WIFI or DSL modem connection through the printer server, but you do need WIFI capability (a seperate wireless router) in your home/office for this server to work.

3) Follow the directions on the software and it will walk you through the steps to gain access to the printer(s) you have hooked up to the server. Keep in mind that it has to be via a USB connection as the port; other port connections won't work.

Also, if you get the message "Enable bi-directional support via the printer's Properties dialogue box," you will find this command in the port section under the printer's properties drop down menu under "Printer" when you double click the printer icon. It took me a few minutes to figure this out.

This little gem is a whole lot better than having to buy a printer for each PC or laptop. I have one laptop and two PCs tied into it, including the PC I have sitting right in front of the two printers we use. This initially seemed a little odd to me, but it works just as though it was connected via cable.

I highly recommend this wireless printer server.

I was concerned that with a multi-function printer it would not work at all (as many reviews had said).

The printing works great - the scan / fax don't work, but the printing works fine. The control software that comes with the printer gives a message like it isn't communicating, but the printer starts and everything runs from there.

Great PRINT server........2007-05-13

I have at home 1 wireless laptop, 2 Windows desktops, and 1 Linux box. I always had problem trying to share my printer (connected to a WinXP) with the Linux... so I decided to go with a Wireless Print Server, since I wanted to leave the printer far away from my boxes. Well... after a lot of research, I found this model the best one. Some people complain about not being able to use the scanner, or fax... well... This is a PRINT server, so I wouldn't try to plug a MULTI FUNCTION printer on it.

The Epson R300 - my printer - has some special features, such as a great quality photo printing, and CD printing... everything is working just like it was before when connected to the PC.

INSTALATION:
===========
If you follow the FAST GUIDE, there is no chance to do anything wrong. It's easy, and I printed the first page within 2 minutes or so.

TIP:
====
When installed, the Print Server will connect to your router using the DHCP. I suggest you change the IP to a static one, this way you will never have to reconf the PCs.

LINUX:
======
When doing my research I didn't find anything saying that this Print Server could be used with Linux... but as far it's a NETWORK server, I decided to take my chances.

It was easier than I though. I use Mandriva Linux, and I just asked it to look for a Network printer... It found the print server imediatelly. It didn't recognize the model of my printer, but I just selected from a List (Epson R300) and it worked right on the spot. (didn't take more than 1 minute to do that).

THINGS THAT NOBODY TOLD ME:
===========================
After installed, I decided to access the Print Server through a browser by typing http://192.xxx.xxx.xxx on my browser (where 192.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of the print server) - It worked!!! Belkin put together a really cool WEB BASED interface where you can check the status of the printers, IPs, etc... Even better, you can setup a FTP printing system... for those who don't know, it's a FTP service that whatever you PUT in is printed immediately... very useful when you want to print from outside of the Network. Just create the FTP service, forward the a port of your router to the Print Server, and you can FTP any document from anywhere in the world and get it printed on your Printer.

PROBLEM:
========
The only thing I noticed is not working anymore is the level of the INK on the printer, that I used to be informed through a graphic interface on my Windows XP... now, it does not show anything anymore... but since I use a BULK anyway, I can always just take a look on the level so for me that's not a big deal.

At least as good as anybody else's LCD.......2003-03-10

Let's see, there are too many cool things about this display. It costs about the same as any of the other premium LCD panels at this size (you can get a cheaper one, but you usually give up contrast, viewing angle, or speed). You get a single cable attachment to your Power Mac (carries video, power, and USB) which saves a lot of clutter. You get a pair of USB ports on the monitor which most others don't offer, despite it's convenience. And it just looks too darn cool on the desk next to the Power Mac.

I'm really happy.......2003-02-20

I just bought this flat-panel at the recently reduced price, and I'm totally happy with it. It's got a much smaller footprint than my old 17" monitor, it's bright, easy on the eyes, and a total breeze to set up.

I was a little leary of ordering such a "delicate" item online, but then realized Apple would have to ship it to me, just the same. It arrived fine, and without any dead pixels.

At the new, lower price, you really can't go wrong.

The best flat panel monitor........2002-09-22

Flat panel momitors have two major advantages: the entire surface of the display is usable (thus a 17" flat panel monitor gives as large a working surface as a 19" CRT monitor) and they don't take up a lot of desk space as CRT monitors do. But most flat panel monitors have the disadvantage that their image is not quite as sharp as the best CRT monitors. This Apple monitor gives you the best of both types. It has the size advantages typical of flat panel monitors and it has the crisp, sharp image quality of the best CRT monitors. Yes, it's more expensive than the average flat panel monitor; but if you want CRT image quality with the size advantages of a flat panel monitor this is the one to get.

I have one of these displays that I use at work, and think that it is the best thing since sliced bread! Apple has done an amazing job. The brightness and clarity are absolutely brilliant. I love that it has only the one cable, which carries power, video, and USB signal all in one. It makes for a nice clean work area, without all those ugly cords for power, video, and USB. But then again, that is no surprise, because you can tell that Apple truly cares about beauty, as well as performance. My hats off to Apple!!

Easy-on-the-eyes.......2001-09-26

I was initially unsettled about the thought of buying a flat panel display because of the nature of the color critical work I am required to do; especially after seeing other flat panels in action at CompUSA, Circuit City, ect. Also, a flat panel seems more of a luxury than a need to get work finished. But, post-purchase, I could not be more satisfied with this display. Now, when I use any CRT display, it appears fuzzy and out of focus. I love my new display and it is well worth the cost!

Good Overall.......2003-07-07

The rechargeable batteries are extrememly hard to install. Eventually (after breaking one of them) we figured out that the back clip needs to be removed before the battery plate can slide off easily. No directions whatsoever regarding this.

The units float around a bit in the rechargable units - you have to tinker with them a bit before they make contact and start to charge.

Lastly, the plastic packaging is that industrial strength variety -- very difficult to open -- and the plastic is not recycleable.

I've only owned this camera for three days. The photos are outstanding. I own the Nikon D70 & the pictures are on a par with it. If you want a camera to carry in your pocket or purse, this is the one. I bought it just to carry with me so I would always have a camera, not thinking the pictures would be this great, but I was in for a very pleasant surprise. I am more than happy with this camera.
