If you're looking for fancy features and digital displays, please look elsewhere. But if you want a good strong basic no-nonsense cordless phone, you have found it. Over the years I've used three different cordless phones in my house, and this GE phone is the clearest and easiest to use of the three. Sometimes less fancy is best.

I have owned 3 of these phones for over 2 years. They were very reasonably priced and have worked OK for the time I have had them. Last week we had a power outage. After about 10 minutes I decided to phone a friend and found all three phones were dead. Something about the outage discharged them immediatly. This is not acceptable & even though they recharged I am now looking for new phones.

Failure rate is far too high.......2007-05-24

I ordered 4 of these drive enclosures last summer because the one I had ordered a few months earlier worked so well. One of those drives was DOA and had to be returned. The firewire port on a second enclosure just failed about 10 months into using it. Clearly the quality control on these drives is not very good if a failure rate of 50% is seen.

At least they are failing within the 1 year warranty period, so I can return the enclosures for replacements, but keep your receipt.

Flimsy with poor electrics.......2007-04-29

Major flaws:
* The power plug is too loose, so it often falls out, which crashes the hard drive inside.
* Firewire mode does not work. (Mac OS X)

Minor flaw:
* Built from cheap plastic.

In my old apartment, this device constantly unplugged itself and was incredibly noisy. I moved apartments, set up a new desk, and switched out to a different hard drive (and I think I unplugged the internal fan too), and now it's much better-- the wiring connection is more stable, and the new drive is quieter.

We bought a half dozen of these for work, and all have been problem-free. Having both USB 2.0 and Firewire adds flexibility, at least from the Mac end of things - I normally prefer Firewire for bulk transfers, but if I'm doing video it's nice to use USB so the Firewire bus isn't being split between two separate peripherals; and vice-versa.

They look nice too.

they are now shipping w/ a initio firewire chip. I have not found anything bad written anywhere about this chip. Someone on some forum noted that he called macally (they also use this chip I guess) and macally had run tests to confirm that the initio chip ran well.

Anyways it has initio now not oxford. Oxford has such a good reputation and is a more expensive chip than initio. . .

Exceptional product and tech support staff!.......2006-08-05

This is my first external drive enclosure, and the Apricorn Firewire/USB 2.0 Ez Bus DTC kit package is absolutely perfect for my needs. As noted, it comes with everything except the hard drive--included are: the enclosure, 2 Firewire cables, 1 USB cable, driver CD (for non-Windows XP or 2000), software CD containing backup and encryption software, the power brick and heavy duty side mounting bracket. The unit is very solid, and the internals are well designed and cleanly laid out. The fan works great, keeping everything cool and I can't hear either the fan or hard drive. There is no vibration noise whatsoever.

I had a half a dozen or so old drives laying around that still contained my personal files since I hadn't gone through the trouble of wiping them before I pulled them. Using this kit and the Firewire cable I erased all my data, formatted then wiped each drive with Hard Disk Scrubber freeware from Summit Computer Networks. Now I feel better knowing that my personal data isn't lying around unprotected.

For my ongoing backup needs, I installed a new 320GB drive (Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3320620A 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM) and use the Firewire cable. The Apricorn EZ Gig II image backup/restore software included with this enclosure works perfectly (I left compression at the "normal" default), and is very fast compared with other utilities I've used with internal hard drives. All my data is safely encrypted and password protected, thanks to Apricorn. Now my 2 laptops and desktop, plus my wife's laptop are all backed up painlessly and regularly.

Here are a few tips that may save someone a bit of time and anxiety, and some kudos to Apricorn's support staff. First, if you plan to use Firewire (which is fast), make sure your Firewire port is enabled in your PC's BIOS. I never had a Firewire device up to now, and had disabled the ports on all my PCs. So my drive wasn't recognized unless I used the USB cable. It wasn't until after I sent a note to Apricorn's tech support that it dawned on me to check my Firewire ports. Sure enough, I enabled and all worked perfectly. I don't think even 30 minutes had passed since I sent my note, and I had already received two replies from real human beings with troubleshooting information and a request for my shipping info in case the unit was defective. The responses arrived beginning at 8:34 am (PST) from technicians located in California, who had excellent communication skills. I was absolutely amazed!

Now for the second tip, read the instructions. I hate reading user guides but this one is brief and precise. In particular, it says to set your enclosure drive's jumper to "master", which I would never have considered doing and this would have cost me some frustration and time. Now for the last tip, make sure you initialize the enclosure's hard drive if the drive is brand new and never been formatted. Just plug the cable from the Apricorn to your PC, power on, then do Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management (under the Storage folder) with Windows XP.

Solid, works great.......2006-07-07

I've owned a couple of different external drive enclosures. This one is the best of the lot. It's solid, easy to install a drive into, and it worked the first time I plugged things in. The firewire connection to my PC is blazingly fast - I can't tell the difference in speed between it and my internal drives.

The entire bundle is a class act: case, vertical stand, power cable, two firewire cables (one regular/regular ended and one regular/mini cable), a usb cable, and software discs containing optional, but nice, utilities. Windows XP did fine with the drive with no drivers.

This enclosure uses the highly regarded Oxford chipset for the firewire interface and the similarly regarded Cypress for the USB2.

The poster who was complaining about not getting a 400gig drive AND the enclosure for $68 is:
1: A fool... 400 gig hd for $68 ?... Never mind the fact he was expecting a drive and the enclosure for $68!
2: Part numbers for the different units are CLEARLY stated. 400 gig is part number EZ-BUS-DTC-400 and goes for $369, not $68 !
3: Mistaken on the enclosure itself, its ALL ALUMINUM.... the only plastic is the front and rear covers of the unit.

The Apricorn EZ-BUS-DTC-KIT ... is just that a "KIT". Meaning it's an enclosure you put a desktop hard drive in to make a portable device to transfer data from one machine to another, or archive DATA to. While there could be a typo at some point I think the poster was confused as Apricorn sells hd already installed, plus this "kit".

The unit with the 400 gig is part number EZ-BUS-DTC-400 and goes for $369. They offer other units as well... the size of the hd being the last (3) digits... 500gig is EZ-BUS-DTC-500... 160 gig? EZ-BUS-DTC-160, and so on. The only unit that doesn't come with a hard drive is the EZ-BUS-DTC-KIT. Key-word being "KIT".

Info on the Apricorn EZ-BUS-DTC-KIT:

First of all, if you're concerned about protecting your data. This is the external enclosure to buy!
It has the (2) BEST chipsets there are on the market !!!!

USB = Cypress: CY7C68300
Firewire = Oxford 911+

There are allot of enclosures on the market which use sub-standard (cheap) chipsets that will corrupt your data. This enclosure uses the (2) best chipsets available on the market for a combo enclosure.
FYI: The best mfg's use a separate chipset, one for the USB and another for the Firewire. The "el-cheap-o" ones use a 2nd tier chipset, or a combo chipset.. which is very bad news if you're concerned about NOT having your data corrupted!!!!

One HUGE point, I'd like to make.. Since Apricorn sells this same enclosure with hd's already mounted and has to support issues that may arise, they have "real-world" experience with the product, unlike other mfg's that "just" make the enclosure... them never having to "deal" with the end-user on problems that may be affecting people.

Have been in contact with Apricorn tech support to ask them tech pre-sales questions. They are FAST to respond and very professional. Have also been in contact with other owners of the unit. ALL have given this unit very HIGH marks.

For those of you "searching" for an external enclosure.... One BIG plus this unit has over other units on the market is that in the Apricorn units the hard drive has a "DIRECT" contact with the external aluminum case, increasing cooling to the hd several fold over a unit in which the hd is isolated from the external casing!!!!, Plus has a HUGE, quite 80mm cooling fan!!!! While other units on the market "need" a fan to cool the drive, the Apricorn units do not seeing how the drive is in direct contact with the external casing!!!! In addition the "tray" that the hd sits in is aluminum as well with a 80mm fan blowing cooling air on the underside of the hard drive that houses the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that contains the "electronics" of the hd.

Unlike other units on the market that may have a cooling fan, the fan in the Apricorn is to a large extent a "backup", "extra" or secondary cooling source since the hard drive makes DIRECT contact with the external aluminum casing. The external casing "wicks" heat AWAY from the hd, the cooling fan is really not needed. It just further cools the hd and case over a unit that relies on "passive" heat transfer.

There are allot of units on the market I've looked at with an eye towards the internals of the unit. Most I've seen use a plastic tray the hd sits in, and if they do offer a metal tray the contact area between the tray and the outer casing is VERY small, which means the hd is going to run "hot". If the unit doesn't have a fan this means the hd is being "cooked", if it does have a fan and that fan fails, the hd is going to cook.

With this unit you get the BEST of both worlds... hd is in DIRECT contact with an aluminum external housing... AND it has a HUGE 80mm fan!

This means the hd is going to run allot "cooler" and longer.

PS: The Apricorn EZ-BUS-DTC-KIT also comes with a VERY good software package to "Clone", "Image" your hd, plus it comes with software to back up your DATA, and also comes with software to encrypt your data if needed!!!

Software updates are FREE. Has an excellent owners manual and warranty, comes with BOTH types of FIREWIRE cables !!!!

Hope this info helps someone... I've spent several WEEKS looking at different hd enclosures and e-mailing competing companies for info on their products. I've been a "TECH" for many years so I tend to look at things with a VERY critical eye when I'm looking to buy. I do allot of research.

BTW: I'm 48, and I care more with protecting the DATA on the HD, that how many "flashing", "cool" blue lights an enclosure may have....

One last thing... the power switch is on the FRONT of this unit, instead of the back. Power supply is a laptop type with a detachable, replaceable cord.

Amazon.com and five other companies advertised this product through BizRate's Web site as a 400GB external Hard Drive Combo!!! I fell for it and all I got was an empty plastic box that had a sticker on it that said hard drive sold separately!! The box is just a kit with connectors, a fan, and a cover for a hard drive...not worth $68.00. I'm sure this review won't be posted!!
