Lasted less than a year.......2003-09-11
I bought this hard drive initially for backup, but eventually I had moved a lot of photos and other media onto it alone, along with older schoolwork and such. Over the summer, I had to reformat my main hard drive, and never moved a lot of the backup stuff onto the main drive. Then one day this drive just stopped working. The red "thinking" light would not go off and the computer would not assign it a drive letter. Maxtor did oblige in replacing the drive for free, but would not even consider trying to actually fix the problem. They were quite cordial about replacing the drive, but the replacement is useless to me without the 25+ GB I had on the old drive. The warranty is voided if the casing is opened, so I can't try to fix it on my own, and my only option according to Maxtor is to get a company to attempt data recovery- a very expensive task. What bothers me most is that Maxtor wouldn't even explain what the problem was, let alone try to fix it or allow me to. Thumbs down for a product that didn't even last a year.
Inexpensive Virus Immune Backup - Plug and Play with XP.......2003-01-17
What I wanted was an inexpensive detachable data back up drive that I could use with the backup features of XP-Pro. I wanted it detachable because then it is immune to any virus that might attack the main hard drive. I wanted USB 2.0 because it is "fast".
This drive accomplishes all those goals. First it is inexpensive. Second, it is not at the leading edge of speed so it is probably more reliable - an important quality for back up media. Third, it is plug and play with XP. Fourth, it works transparently with the backup SW in XP-Pro.
The initial backup of my (then) 12.7Gb of data took a little while. After the initial backup I set the default mode to incremental. I do a virus update and scan over night on Thursday, and then if there are no virus problems, run the incremental backup on Friday morning. Running the backup is trivial - I plug the drive into the computer, it is recognized, and ready to go in seconds. Go to the back up program and with about three clicks of the mouse the backup is under way.
In incremental mode it typically does the backup of the 500 to 600 files (250Mb or so of data) that have changed since last time in less than 3 minutes. Then the drive can be disconnected and shut down till the next week backup session, and I'm ready to begin the next week.
It is as close to painless data backup as one can get for the money. It also has the benefit that I can plug it into my laptop and back that up to a different file from time to time, and I can use it to move data between computers in large chunks.
Works for me.

Easy to install, runs well, if only it had a higher RPM.......2002-09-15
This is the "white refrigerator" of computer add-ons. No bells and whistles, but to install this hard drive on my Windows XP computer, all I had to do was plug the power in and attach the USB cable. I wish everything worked this easily.
If it ran at 7800 RPM, I'd have gotten the 100GB model for video storage. Previous reviews cited the drive's noise, the reviewer must have had a sub-par model, no one in my office can hear any noise.
Revised rating: an OKAY drive, nothing fancy........2002-01-13
UPDATE: 12/17/2002
I thought I had previously submitted a revision of my review but it looks like it got lost. Therefore, for the record, I'd like to point out that the unit I reviewed below eventually died and I got a replacement directly from Maxtor (they have a very good returns policy). The replacement has not had any errors, and was initially completely silent. After several months of use when it was pretty much continuously on it did develop a high pitched whine again. Not as bad as before but definitely not silent. Its louder than anything else in my PC. For this reason I keep it off mostly now.
For anytone looking for a very quiet hard drive I would now recommend Seagate Baraccuda IV fluid bearing drive. Put that in a standard ... USB 2.0 drive enclosure and you'll be happy and have a simple upgrade path in the future. I look forward to Serial ATA becoming more prevelant and making frequent swapping of drive packs more feasible (IDE connectors are not designed for frequent use, the pins tend to bend too easily).

I bought this because I was excited with the prospect of a large amount of detachable storage that was easily connected to any USB enabled PC, and offered fast access for those with USB2.0 (I bought a USB2.0 card for my main server machine).
Unfortunately I was somewhat disappointed with the drive and the concept of USB storage for three reasons:
1. While the drive is quiet it emits a high pitched whine that I can easily hear from 20 feet away. Its not loud, its just the high pitch that means you can hear it in a quiet room.
2. For the above reason I'd be tempted to power down the drive, however that means I need to stop the device on my PC and the turn it off (there is no on/off switch, you just disconnect the power cable). However that it a pain to do and hence I end up having it running all the time and just ignoring the whine as best I can...
3. I've twice had occasions when connecting the drive has resulted in repeated "thunks" and no e:/ drive appearing on my computer. The most recent time it happened I discovered the drive had got a corrupted master boot record that took a couple of hours of research to figure out how to repair (chkdsk wont do it). I've no idea how that happened - the drive was shut down correctly and was sitting unmoved the whole time.
So I'm now suspicious of my drive and worried about loading it up with any more data. I've no idea if I have a common problem, or if its USB related, or an issue with NTFS, but I'm going to check with Maxtor. I think I'll get another drive (this time a Buslink) and back everything up and if I have this problem a third time its going back for a refund! I'm interested to hear if anyone else had similar problems.

Works great until it crashes! It crashed with out any warning! I will not buy another maxtor drive.

In the beginning it will work fine, but then it will malfunction out of the blue and take your important files with it. The Maxtor 40 Gig External Drive erased all my work out of no ware one sunny day and I used a file recovery to retrieve my work. This happened 3 times where the third time I couldn't get nothing back and now it just plain doesn't work. Stay away from Maxtor it's not even worth the cheap price!
Bad product.......2004-11-15
I used this drive for just over a year. It worked great at first. I stored all my very important files on it. I was using it as a back-up device.
Suddenly, without warning, the drive fried one day. I couldn't access it. Customer support was no help. I ended up losing all my files--over 3 years of research.
I looked around and talked to some other people. Apparently, this is a very common problem with Maxtor USB drives. That's why Maxtor doesn't issue longer warranties.
Perfect Secondary/Backup Hard Drive for Laptops!.......2004-04-30
I have been using Maxtor external hard drives for just over a year now and have made recommendations to family and colleagues which have resulted in them buying many of them as well. So with experience with close to a dozen hard drives, we have not had any problems and have nothing but praise for the drives.
First off, with internal hard drive prices for laptops so expensive and so difficult to install, external hard drives that use firewire (IEEE1394) are a great option. These hard drives use both firewire and USB, so you can take the information and hot swap it among multiple computer (like a thumb drive) or keep it plugged in to a single computer for use a secondary hard drive. I have found virtually no speed difference between accessing files on the external hard drive versus the internal.
The automatic backup feature, makes the hard drive all that much more useful. It comes bundled with Dantz Retrospect Express program which is an easy-to-use option for automatically backing up just what you want with a touch of a button. I backup often, usually just punching the button as I go meet to clients. It usually finishes the automated process by the time I return. Because backing up is so easy to do, when I did lose the hard drive on one of my laptops, I barely missed a beat after I got it replaced, simply restoring the drive image to make my new laptop look just like my old one.
I highly recommend Maxtor external hard drives.
Quality external mass storage on a budget.......2004-03-16
This is a regular issue external hard disk. I acquired it four months ago and have had no mechanical problems with it.
One thing that struck me as odd was the drive came pre-formated with one 37 gigabyte FAT32 partition. That may be handy for older versions of windows that don't support NTFS. There is a couple of gigabytes in unpartitioned space on the drive. I would suggest most user's repartition the drive and install a more capable filesystem.
If you are not planning to frequently disconnect the drive I would also suggest that you travel to the windows control panel and enable write caching. After doing this you need to use the safely remove hardware option to remove it properly. Doing this speeds up write performance for the drive somewhat. I have only tried this under windows xp home and it works fine.
Even though this is a USB 2.0 device if you have a older computer with USB 1.1 this drive is a great deal for you. It works perfectly with USB 1.1. It will seem slow as that particular interface isnt the fastest thing ever. But the drive is still a easy way to transfer large amounts of data between machines or to perform data backup.
My machine dual boots mandrake linux 9.2. The drive was recognized and automatically configured during the linux install routine for this version of linux.
The box it came in included a driver disk and all the needed cables and the external power supply. A tiny manual was also included.
In my opinion this is a very affordable product that performs well. The drives only serious negative is that it lacks a power switch of any kind.

WAAS is a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you even better position accuracy. How much better? Try an average of up to five times better. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time. And you don't have to purchase additional receiving equipment or pay service fees to utilize WAAS.
How it Works
WAAS consists of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through one of two geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal.
Who benefits from WAAS?
Currently, WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America. There are no ground reference stations in South America, so even though GPS users there can receive WAAS, the signal has not been corrected and thus would not improve the accuracy of their unit. For some users in the U.S., the position of the satellites over the equator makes it difficult to receive the signals when trees or mountains obstruct the view of the horizon. WAAS signal reception is ideal for open land and marine applications. WAAS provides extended coverage both inland and offshore compared to the land-based DGPS (differential GPS) system. Another benefit of WAAS is that it does not require additional receiving equipment, while DGPS does.

Have been using this cartridge on an old laser printer in my home office for about 10 years now and I have no complaints.
It usually lasts me about one year+ so the cost is reasonable though not the best value out there

I have used HP's toner cartridge most of the time for my 10 year old HP Laserjet Printer. It gives good black printing and lasts a very long time so the up front cost is worth it.

I bought my HP 5P October 1995 and have only changed the cartridge once. The print test page shows 7,000 pages. Can't beat the price per page -- so far 2 cents per page.
I suggest using economode to extend the life -- exspecially graphics intense prints which are just used for archiving.

I've owned my HP 5MP for about 5 years. I never thought I would use the infrared port until my Honey bought a laptop with one. I've had no problems with the toner cartridge. Any paper jams I've had could be attributed to feeding the same page into the printer twice (curled after the first time, trying to print on back). ...
