About 18 months ago, purchased the Z40 for my teenage daughter.
It's a great little camera with a long battery life. Last month the lens jammed in the open position. Called Casio and would cost $200 to repair. Did a little research and found Casio has a problem with lenses jamming. Turns out the camera will accidently turn on in your pocket or purse and the lens cannot fully extend. These cheap plastic rings break and the camera is useless. I have just begun to fight and have even found a lawyer who is gathering info for a possible class action suit.
If you are going to buy this camera, get the optional insurance. You will get the camera repaired for free but it could takes months. Good luck!

2 out of 5 stars Zoom Broke 3x.......2006-05-05

The pictures were very high quality, when the camera was working. My only complaint there was that even zoomed in, the objects of most pictures at a distance looked ant like. The camera's zoom mechanism broke 3x. The first time I had fixed at my cost. I was not sure that I had not caused the damage. One day after getting it back, the problem resurfaced and the repair people fixed it again. This was the second long repair time. About 2 months later I was at a music festival, went to turn it on and guess what? Yep, the zoom mechanism was broken again. I am not going to bother fixing it. After I get the pictures off it (the only way now is directly from the SD card), this camera is going to that great camera in the sky.

I was a bit skeptical of the Casio brand but I liked all the features of this camera and read a positive up review in a photography magazine so I took the leap. I haven't regreted it a bit. This is a great "casual" camera with easy settings for picking just the shot you need.

Mine has taken a lot of abuse and has never failed to perform. I highly recommend the leather belt pouch for protection during carry. The only problem I have is deciding whether to upgrade to the 6 or 7 megapixel Exilim!

I've been an avid digital camera buyer/user for years....When I bought the EX-Z40, it was with extreme excitement. I've been using this Casio EX-Z40 digital camera for 1 1/2 years and it is a disappointment to me. >: < Don't get me wrong, I love the size and I like all the functions on this camera, but I would gladly give those things up for better pictures.

The only time a picture comes out decent, is if ithe subject is close to you (4 to 10 feet) or in its macro mode. Macro is good.
Distances and outside pics, like telephoto...just forget it. Don't even bother because you will wind up deleting the pics anyway. Keep the camera very steady..it is a must. Alot of out of focus pics. I know how to hold a camera so alot of it was not my fault. Very Grainey pics too. Even the color is off at times. I use a High End digital Nikon and I love the colors with that one. I've seen small digital cameras take good pictures, not this one.

I took several outside pictures 2 weekends ago of a beautiful creek with layered stones and water flowing over them. It was very very breath taking. I was so excited to put the pictures into my computer when I got home just to find out that they were mostly all terrible. How disappointed I was.

I've been disappointed too many times with this camera. Maybe my camera is a lemon. :(
JUST BE VERY CAREFUL ON CHOOSING YOUR NEXT DIGITAL CAMERA FOR QUALITY.
I ordered a Kodak to replace this one...the Kodak V530, which I read up on and read great things about it. It was rated high! It's on its way to me and I can't wait to take the Casio out of my purse and put it into a drawer or sell it to someone who dosn't mind the pictures coming out funny like I do.

It is small and the pics are great too. Battery seems to last for ever....well i am not one to use this everyday, only when i am out with friends. Have to admit i love this camera...could be smaller but hey great screen and great pics.

Love this camera. Just point and shoot. No need to reread the manual if you don't use it for months. It has so many other capabilities that I forget to use that would make my pictures even better, but however you use it the photos come out great. The preprogrammed settings for different environments really, really works. The LCD display is amazingly clear. The battery door is a little fragile -- broke it and had to replace it, but other than that, this thing is rock-solid quality. I recently purchased this new 4mp camera from Casio. The historigram is great and the overall use of the equipment is easy to use. The pictures are high quality and given the internal "auto" settings, found it to be wonderfully simple and ready to shoot. It powers up quickly and is small enough to fit in your coat pocket. The only flaw is the movie mode, sound is not a component of this camera? I wish it was so everyone could see and hear my three angels on any email I wish to send. Thanks to Casio for meeting my digital needs, I will be a return customer for sure!!!!!!

I have used this camera for couple of months now and I am quite pleased with it, though I am dissapointed that you can not buy the charger from the manifacturer separetly. I have lost the charger and I can not charge the battery. I have to carry an external battery unit to use the camera which really dissapoints me. I do not understand why the manifacturer does not supply the charger for the unique battery that the camera comes with?????

4 out of 5 stars Great User Interface but Movie Mode is Lacking.......2003-03-06

I just picked this camera up and snapped a few photos. The user interface is wonderful: as long as you don't want to do manual focus or other manual functions, you won't even have to read a manual to figure out how to use features like "Best Shot" modes or using the special effects like "sepia". The UI is the best I've ever seen in a digital camera though I have really only used a Canon camera for more than a few minutes.

While the photos look great when imported into my Mac, the extra resolution above 1600x1200 doesn't seem to make that much of a difference (even as I zoom in to different areas). I'm going on a trip tomorrow so I'll have a chance to vary the resolution and see if it really matters. If you just want your first digitial camera, 1600x1200 resolution may be good enough for you and you'll save some money. One thing that I noticed and liked was that this camera seems to take pictures pretty quickly (less lag) as compared with other cameras I've used.

Now for some flaws. The movie mode is horrible when compared to my brother's Canon Powershot (roughly the same size and his model was cheaper than this one). For one, the Canon had sound but you don't get sound with this camera. You may argue that if you want to make movies, buy a DV camera but my brother has sent me some cool little emails of my niece and the movie mode really is a good plus. Second, the movie mode picture was much grainier than with my brother's Canon. I probably won't use the movie mode on this camera but I probably would have if it was better.

In summary: great pictures so far (even though it is a cloudy day), great size, best UI I've seen, but the awful movie mode prevents me from giving this camera 5 stars (though I guess 4.5 stars would be closer to my opnion).

I was totally amazed by all the functions that this camera can perform. It has options that my more expensive cameras don't have. The main reason I bought this camera is to have a light weight digicam to carry in my purse at all times. I was missing too many opportunities. I have taken dozens of test shots and have not been disappointed. The color of creeks, in this part of Texas, is brown from the tannic acid, I merely use the built in blue filter and I have wonderful water! All the grass is dead and the pines have brown needles with a little green, I use the built in green filter and it looks like summer. The clarity is good right out of the camera and the images need little or no post production work. It surprised me that the battery life is so good since I thought that with a pack that small, I would run out in no time, but it's excellent. I can't say enough good things about this camera. I like it much better than my G2. The ability to regulate the flash is great, since I would tend to blow macro shots right out of the scene. The option to reduce the flash output is extremely valuable to me. The camera is unbelievably easy to use and I started shooting before having had time to read the manual and had no difficulty. I'm in the process of reading it now and it is also excellent, easy to understand and to the point. The camera is also fast, which is a definite plus!

This camera is unbelievable. It takes wonderful pictures, great videos and the sound on it is awesome. This camera is very compact, easy to use and has a perfect size screen for reviewing pictures. I use this camera all the time and I don't think there is a better digital camera out there. The flash works well and it even has a night mode. This camera is really worth the money and I highly recommend anyone looking for a nice digital camera to get this one!

this is a nice deal for the money that u invest in it.. controls are somewhat sluggish when u compare it with the more expensive ones, but u r getting a nice deal.. perfect for people who do not require to store a lot of music in their mp3 players at a given time. can easily copy more songs from their notebooks when they want a change.. comes with a voice recorder as well..
overall, nice mp3 player for those who dont want to spend too much on one yet....

I was a little skeptable at first, but now I love this product. It is very easy to use, especially if it is dark or in your pocket, you don't need to take it out. It holds lots of songs as well. It seems to have a problem with WMA files, they have feedback on them, but it is easily fixed with a free online WMA to MP3 converter. Overall, excellent product, highly reccomended.

i applied for an amazon visa, got $30 off the price of the purchase, and got free shipping. so i got this for a total of $12.75. i put a ton of Mp3's encoded @ 192 Kbps, and i jog with this thing every night. the battery lasted for quite a while, and the sound quality is very decent. the menus are a little strange to navigate at first, but after the first couple of days it's clean sailing. i replaced the crappy earbuds that came with it w/ some $9.99 sport sony wraparound headphones, which work really well and sound great for the cheap price. no problems with this thing in the few months i've had it. i'd recommend this to anyone who wants 100+ songs to listen to on the fly and doesn't want to fork out $300 for an ipod or something similar. this, for what it does, it does it extremely well for a nice affordable price. thanks amazon! it comes with a battery, a USB extension cable (usb 2.0), a strap, earbuds, instructions, an install cd (for OS before 2000), and a smile on my face. the only thing it lacks is a clip on carry case, but you can get something like that from walmart if needed for $2. btw, it does not play copy protected music, but i encode all my own MP3's at better quality than those crappy sites sell their songs for... or find what i need of soulseek. this mp3 is PERFECT for me. hope this review helps you out. the

Great Value. I use the Recorder, I use the mp3/wav player and the file storage for transfer of files from laptop to desktop etc..

Plays great, good output not too many db's. I use it in the car with a FM transmitter when on the road, as I often get to drive a car without a cd player or tape player.

Much cheaper than an IPOD. and 512 megs is okay. I use iTunes to build playlist and only load the selectinos for the trip.

I bought one for my son who if he loses it...no big deal.
