The Benefits of Enhanced TV

Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information.

Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture.

Gateway's plasma TVs are astonishingly thin.

This is an EDTV (enhanced-definition) TV, so it's capable of displaying progressive-scan 480p signals in their native resolution. A built-in digital scaling engine accepts various computer and HDTV signals, then digitally maps them to fit the screen's 852 x 480 pixels. Compatible signals include computer display resolutions up to 1,280 x 1,024 and all HDTV signals, including 720p and 1080i.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p and 720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional interlaced pictures, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

A plasma screen consists of two thin sheets of glass containing tiny, gas-filled cells. Electronic current stimulates the cells to produce light and color, creating bright, steady, vivid pictures. You also get extremely wide viewing angles (160 degrees with this set) and easy placement due to the TV's slim profile--this Gateway set is a mere 3.7 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (a table stand is supplied, and the set is compatible with most mounting hardware). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems.

Picture-in-picture (PIP) allows you to watch two programs simultaneously with four selectable window positions. Picture-on-picture (POP) lets you watch two programs side by side. PIP/POP is available when your video source is set to anything other than RGB, DVI, or HD sources (component-video sources higher than 480i resolution). For example, you can watch two analog TV programs simultaneously by using the built-in TV tuner and an external tuner such as the one inside your DVR or VCR. You can also watch analog TV and a DVD movie at the same time.

A choice of digital zoom modes lets you fill the screen to eliminate letterbox bars on 4:3 (or other) aspect-ratio content, and a built-in digital visual interface (DVI) input jack eliminates the need for analog-to-digital conversion between your DTV set-top box or computer.

Audio options abound: there's a stereo RCA output with internally selectable fixed or variable level, a pair of built-in 5-watts-per-channel speakers, plus BBE Sound maximizer to tailor the timbre to your taste. For spacious surround sound, a circuit from SRS Labs simulates surround from any two speakers, while a monaural RCA output lets you use an optional subwoofer to enhance the low-frequency response of your listening system.

TV's fine for the money.......2005-01-28

So I went to pick this tv up yesterday...set it up and my first impression was that visually the tv is nice looking, really really huge screen! (coming from a 35in crt)So I hook everything (and there are alot of connection choices)up and put in Monsters, Inc. My first impression : Nice color, what the hell is wrong with the blacks? THERE WERE TONS OF GREEN DOTS IN ALL OF THE BLACK!!!!!!!! ACCCK! So I thought a bit and switched out the video from component to Svideo..problem solved, the picture quality is really nice on DVDs for this price point ($1999) My only gripe is that regular cable looks not so great, but thats a small point since I dont watch anything but the news.

In the end, I think this is a great starter plasma or a purchase for someone trying to build credit (like me)

I own this camera for 2 years, and I am fed up with losing picture opportunities - inside pictures are all blurry, and if person moves-the blurr is awful. Outside pictures are good, but I am going to buy Canon this time. It is probably the speed, that messes things up.

4 megapixels do more than I thought.......2005-11-28

Great Camera bought it for around $120 or so. Super clear pictures!! Really nice bright shots. Only downside is in a dark area the autoflash is so bright it whites some people out. I like the thumbnail view and full lcd view options for viewing pictures I've taken on the camera. Really good value! Love it for around the house. I've dropped this on concrete more than once and it's never bothered it. Might want a better one thought if your taking night time vacation shots though. SD cards it uses for memory are nice and affordable these days. Definetly a solid point and shoot camera in my book.

I,usually, don't do reviews but I felt strongly enough about this camara to write...I have this camara and from a beginner who wants bang for her buck,this little camara offers that.It's inexpensive, easy to learn,and most importantly gives great quality pictures. I have yet to see another 4 megapixel/ 6x zoom/5 scene selections,etc,etc for under $200.00.You'll need to go ahead and get your re-chargeable batteries but that's not expensive. Good Luck!

Good Camera....A little Confusing.......2004-07-12

I bought this at Officemax for 119.00 2 days ago. I do like the camera in general, But the software is really confusing. It took me a while to figure out how to save edited images and find where the camera saved them. Also the camera is a little confusing. There is alot of stuff cluttering the LCD screen you have to press a button to make it so it is all gone, but when the camera turns on again it is there. Also the delete function is hard. You have to go into the playback mode, then press menu then select delete, then select delete one, then it brings you to a screen displaying all the pictures, find the picture you want press ok to delete, THen press Yes when it asks are you sure. The processing time on the camera is slow. But for 119.00 it is a great deal.
