The Benefits of Enhanced TV

Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information.

Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture.

Gateway's plasma TVs are astonishingly thin.

This is an EDTV (enhanced-definition) TV, so it's capable of displaying progressive-scan 480p signals in their native resolution. A built-in digital scaling engine accepts various computer and HDTV signals, then digitally maps them to fit the screen's 852 x 480 pixels. Compatible signals include computer display resolutions up to 1,280 x 1,024 and all HDTV signals, including 720p and 1080i.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p and 720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of conventional interlaced pictures, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

A plasma screen consists of two thin sheets of glass containing tiny, gas-filled cells. Electronic current stimulates the cells to produce light and color, creating bright, steady, vivid pictures. You also get extremely wide viewing angles (160 degrees with this set), and easy placement due to the TV's slim profile--this Gateway set is a mere 3.7 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (a table stand is optional, and the set is compatible with most mounting hardware). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems.

Gateway even offers advanced digital image processing, which converts all interlaced (composite-video, S-video) signals to progressive-scanned images for bright, flicker-free viewing. A built-in digital visual interface (DVI) jack eliminates the need for analog-to-digital conversion between your DTV set-top box or computer.

The set also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

PC PIP (picture-in-picture) gives you the option of using your PC and watching one input source (including broadcast TV) simultaneously. A choice of digital zoom modes lets you fill the screen to eliminate letterbox bars on 4:3 (or other) aspect-ratio content, and picture freeze ensures you don't miss any details.

Audio options abound: there's a stereo RCA output with internally selectable fixed or variable level, a pair of built-in 2-watts-per-channel speakers, plus left/right 10-watts-per-channel amplified speaker outputs in case you want to use the set with an external pair of speakers. You can use a feature called WOW sound maximizer to tailor the timbre to your taste, and a circuit from SRS Labs simulates surround sound from any two speakers.

With its versatile power supply (AC 100 to 240V, 50 or 60 Hz, 5 Amps) and multilingual menu (English, French, and Japanese), the 46-inch set is equally at home in many countries, and a BNC-tipped composite-video output provides additional hookup flexibility (with, for instance, a PVR or VCR).

Just so people know gateways plasma units are junk they break after a year and if ya want service on the unit it must be through gateway.So yer shiny new gateway plasma break down gateway gonna teall ya yea $250.00 trip charge $200 labor and $450.00 for the board =$900.00 not buying a gateway plasma PRICELESS

Gateway 46" Plasma Review.......2004-04-04

I have had the television for 2 weeks and i am now returning it due to the poor picture quality. Contrast is not good on DVDs, i even tried S-Vid and Component but both did not change the problems.I used Schindler's List, Lord Of The Rings, and Finding Nemo to try and calibrate the color and contrast.
The opening menu for Schindler's list looked horrible in contrast. You could clearly see three different shades of black and white, which should have blended together. In LOTR during the council of elrond the picture was either too grainy or fleshtone colors on the characters faces were too bright. Finally on Finding Nemo the television had problems finding a medium between making the bright colors too brite or too bland, again no easy medium.
The television would also not turn on if i did not turn it off from the rear power switch each time. And after playing Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow for all of 30 minutes there was already burn in on the lower right of the screen.

I got the television for 3000, it might be cheaper than an HDTV but in my opinion its not worth it.

The Canon 18x50 IS binoculars are a great addition to the human eye. The antifog eyepieces are over priced and should have a better and more secure attachement to the eye pieces. If you use glasses and roll the eyepieces back on themselves the antifog elements can easily fall out. This is not good especially in the forest or out in a canoe or kayak.

The auto-reverse gets jammed on mine. I stick in a tape, and in the middle of the tape, the player auto-reverses back and forth, back and forth for no reason. Other than that, I guess it works fine. But of course, the only reason to buy this is for the auto-reverse, which doesn't work.

Bad product- recommend don't buy........2002-03-05

Bad product- stay away from- tape buttons don't work-put a tape in for the first time and it fast forwarded, stop button did not work and play did not work, could not get tape to stop- had to take batteries out to get my tape back. I had to send back. If I could have given this a negative star rating, it would have gotten 5 NEGATIVE stars.

The button to flip to the other side is too easy to tap inadvertently. I use the cassette player for language learning tapes while jogging and find this button to be a problem. I'm sure there are problems with all tape players but this one is rather annoying. Other than that the player has been quite good. The sound is especially good considering the importance of nuances needed in language learning. I'm sure acid rock sounds great!

For slow and casual walkers........2001-10-22

On the cover of the packaging for this item is a skateboarding kid attempting a 360 aerial maneuver. Good thing he doesn't have this cassette player clipped to his cut-offs and the headphones strapped to his head, or the outcome would be seriously in doubt. But since there's no built-in speaker with the unit, the only possible use I can see for it is to motivate aerobic activity--jogging if not skateboarding. Problem is, it's fairly bulky and is closer to a full than the advertised half pound.

I got the item on a Friday Sale, so the cost of returning it would be close to my original outlay. I'll probably just keep it and use it for walking the cat. Or when I get time, I'll sell it on the internet at cost so someone gets some use out of it. And to be fair to the Casio people, who generally offer a lot of product (in this case, too much) for the money, I see that their model has smaller dimensions than comparable machines from Phillips and Panasonic.

Good product, Bad instructions........2002-12-29

I bought this product, and it turned out to work fine, but I had trouble getting it started. For instance, for the sound in, you need to configure it, but in the instruction book you are supposed to put "sound in", when it is really "NT1004". Also, you can't run the program through classic, because it won't capture the video, so youi have to restart the computer in OS 9.2. The product is good, but the instructions are very bad.
