Design
The phone features a traditional clamshell design with a 65,000-color display. Meanwhile, the rear of the flip-up cover houses a camera that can snap shots at 640 x 480 resolution, also known as VGA resolution. There's also a small secondary black and white LCD display on the back of the cover that displays incoming call information, network signal strength and more. Most camera features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. Meanwhile, the top right side of the unit houses an extendable antenna while data and charging ports are housed on the unit's bottom edge.
Calling Features
The Snapper has all the latest calling features folks have come to expect. The phone comes with built-in Virgin Mobile "superphonic" ringtones plus a vibrating alert. Superphonic ringtones feature real music tracks and more are available via Virgin Mobile's VirginXL service. Ringtones and pictures can be assigned to specific callers so you don't have to look at the phone to know who's calling. The built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear and voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. There's also a built-in address book that can store up to 300 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The Snapper covers the messaging basics with support for sending and receiving MMS-based text, picture, and sound messages. AOL instant messaging is also supported. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
The phone fully supports Virgin Mobile's enhanced wireless content service, VirginXL. With this pay-per-use service you can surf the wireless web or download superphonic ringtones, animations and voices from MTV, Comedy Central and the hottest recording artists. Get content and vote in TV-based polls via the MTV area of your phone, or get jokes and updates from Comedy Central. With the Virgin Mobile Gopher service you'll be connected to real live operators who are ready to help you 24/7. Get driving directions, cross street info, movie times, concert info, sport scores and more. Need to jog your memory? Use Virgin's wacky song ID service. Press the Song ID command, point your Snapper towards a song that's playing in the room, and within minutes a text message appears identifying the song's title. There's even a "Rescue Rings" service to help get you out of sticky dating or other personal situations. The list of cool content features goes on and on.
The Snapper ships with a number of handy tools including a calendar, a calculator and an alarm clock. A voice memo feature lets you record clips up to 60 seconds in length.
Imaging and Entertainment
The Snapper's VGA camera makes it easier than ever to snap good pictures and share them with friends via picture messaging. The camera features a built-in flash for getting great shots in low-light situations. The phone boasts custom Virgin Mobile graphics-- screen savers, wallpaper and menu icons-- that let you dress up your phone to suit your personality. Customer Reviews:
Good phone, lotsa features, Pre-paid is for me. .......2007-04-13
This phone has lots of features, including a camera.
But i can't say i am all that impressed with the
camera picture clarity.
But the fact that you can get all these features with a pre-paid plan, is what did it for me. I don't usually have many occasions when i am away from a land line,
and the pre paid plan makes it easy to afford a cell phone for my limited use. I only use it for calls a couopkle of times a week, asnd that jakes it way more affordable than other plans, while still allowing me to make and recieve emergency calls, tell someone i;'m outside in the car, or play a game when i'm waiting, or there is a blackout.
THIS IS A GREAT PHONE!!!!!!.......2007-01-16
I just got this phone today and I love it! The only problem I have is that it doesn't have a "Beep-Beep" But I don't care because I already have another phone with that. The camera on it is great! And the phone is a great price.....I love everything about this phone! Buy this phone!
Very nice phone, but there are a few faults.......2006-12-14
Pluses
* Speaker is on the outside so alerts can be easily heard.
* Message alert sounds are loud and long, not just a tiny beep like on the Kyocera Switch_Back.
* Pictures taken take up the whole background as wallpaper.
* Sub-LCD has clock displayed for easy time lookup.
Minuses
* No way to disable signal fade tone.
* Phone will terminate rather than pause games/apps running if you close it.
* Cannot assign separate ringer sounds for text messages. Phone will only use default ringer for text message alerts if that option is chosen.
* No automatic controls for camera flash. Flash is so poor, it's best to just disable it and take pictures with ample background lighting.
Overall, a good phone but if the four minuses were fixed (especially the apps closing one), this would be one hell of a phone.
Good phone plan. Bad, unstoppable phone beeping........2006-12-05
5 stars for the phone plan. 0 stars for the unstoppable beeping.
The good news: I really love the phone plan from Virgin Mobile that comes with this phone. I use my phone very little -- it is for quick "I'll be home at 7:00" type messages and for emergencies. You must spend at least 20 dollars every three months to keep up the plan, but that's easy since I signed up to have the phone "topped up" automatically. With my phone usage, I'm only spending about 7 dollars per month to use the phone -- I'm thrilled about this part of the phone. Also, I seem to get pretty good coverage and the reception is fine.
The bad: I take a class in a concrete building so that the phone cannot get a signal while I am in the classroom. So, even though I have the ringer turned completely off, the phone starts beeping to tell me that it cannot get a signal. To make it worse, it plays a little tune as you turn it off. I've been tempted to smash the bejesus out of this thing on several occasions just to shut it up. Why in the world would the designers of this phone make it beep (and I've checked the manual and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off this annoyance) just because the thing doesn't get a signal? Would DEFINITELY choose a different phone with the same plan if I had a choice.
Good phone and good service........2006-11-28
The Phone:
I originally had Virgin Mobile's Kyocera K9 phone. The K9 was very basic and very cheap but it got the job done. I just wanted a phone for emergencies. But I wanted something a bit cooler and a bit more functional. I managed to score the Snapper for only $40 new so I had to get it. Well, I'm loving it and I'm glad I snagged it for so cheap. I don't know if I'd pay full price, I need some sort of sale being I'm frugal, but it's definitely a good phone.
The flip phone is much better than using a keyguard and the speakerphone feature is nice. External caller ID and time display, check.
I think the reception might be better than my K9. I don't hear the fuzziness I heard with the K9 -- the difference isn't really huge, but it's there, and I like it.
The games kind of suck. There is a game called Bejeweled which is similar to Tetris or Columns and there is Tony Hawk's Underground which I tried once and couldn't really get the hang of. But, the worst part is they games are only demos. You need to buy the game for the full thing. You get to play for about 5 seconds before it says the demo is over and asks you to purchase the full game. Pretty bootleg. I miss classic games like Snake or Tetris anyway.
The camera is much better than I thought it would be. When I read that it was 310 pixels, that sounded awfully pathetic when you look at most digital cameras being a few megapixels. But the pictures are decent. You don't have to waste money buying new wallpapers at $2.00 a pop for the phone either -- you can assign any of the pictures you take as wallpaper or screensavers. I uploaded one online (for 25 cents) to see how it looked full-size. It looks like a webcam picture, not bad at all.
The ringtone choices are limited, but I managed to find one I liked. (The other four were crap.) This phone can play real music ringtones, but I don't feel like paying $2.50 -- especially when the selection on Virgin Mobile's website is so limited.
The one feature I do miss from my cheap little K9 was the outside flashlight. Believe it or not, that little flashlight was very useful for me and this phone doesn't have one.
The service:
If you plan on using your phone everyday for more than 9 minutes a day, don't get Virgin Mobile. Just get a monthly plan with one of the big cell companies. But if you're like me and you only using your phone a couple times a week and only for a couple minutes at a time, then Virgin Mobile is what you want.
I've shopped around and Virgin Mobile is the cheapest pre-paid wireless provider out there. At 18 cents a minutes, if I talk for a total of an hour a month, I only spend about $11. I don't think you can get cell service that cheap anywhere else! If you talk even less than that, then you're set. You only need to spend $20 every 90 days. There is nothing cheaper out there. Virgin Mobile doesn't make you pay BS access fees like the other guys.
And 5 cent text messaging is more than fair. When I want to drop a note, instead of spending the 18 cents to make a 15 second call, you can txt the message for only 5 cents.
My main problem with Virgin Mobile's service would be that I've tried setting up auto top-up and it hasn't been working correctly. When I check my account on their website, it asks me to register my credit card for auto top-up even though I already have done that. Previously I tried to do it with PayPal and that was a disaster because PayPal was telling Virgin Mobile I wasn't approved even though I am and have made tons of transactions through PayPal. The auto top-up thing has been annoying for me but luckily, I only need to worry about my Virgin Mobile account balance every 3 months.
The truth is, if it wasn't for Virgin Mobile, I probably wouldn't even have a cell phone. I don't use it that often and I can't afford to pay $50 a month for something I don't need. Virgin Mobile makes it affordable and this cool phone makes me feel like I'm not missing out by being with one of the big wireless companies. I'm glad I found Virgin Mobile, and I'm glad I upgraded phones.

Customer Reviews:
Camera sucks!.......2007-04-18
I bought this phone a little while back when it was new. I dont see any problem with the ringer. The graphics do suck, and the camera is the worst camera on a phone I have ever seen! It is just pixelated crap! If you want a phone that has a camera on it that is good, do not pick this phone. I hope the other virgin mobile camera phones are better, than this piece of crap.
its ok.......2006-08-15
this phone has its pros and cons. i think that it is a great starter phone and virgin mobile is the best prepaid service but there are some downsides. First, it has a really crappy camera and i mean awful. also, it does not hold that much memory.
I Can't use it yet !!!.......2006-05-25
I bought this phone in the swapmeet by 50 dll , it is not open ,but the bad thing is that I can't use it because Virgin Mobil needs to activate this with a proof of purchase receipt which I don't have because in the swapmeet you pay cash !!$$$ Now , I don't know what to do because the person who sold it to me , is not working there anymore ,,,plsss somebody could help me ???/
awesome beginner phone if you keep it concealed from humanity.......2006-03-13
I recently bought this phone and I think that it's a great starter phone, however, I will be getting another phone. Here are some of the pros and cons:
CONS
1.The phone is so bulky and long
2.Nothing against blue, but in my opinion, a phone looks better in silver or black most of the time(I was only able to find the blue kind)
3.The phone has the "virgin mobile" logo typed so people can read it nice and clear (I mean really, it's like they're trying to annoy us, and even if you are a virgin, you don't wanna walk into school and people are like "hey, man wassup with my virgin homeboy?, or "HEY,LOOK, IT'S THE VIRGIN,HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!", or maybe you're trying to take a picture of a hot girl and at the last second, she says, "oh, wait, you're a virgin, you probably don't even know what a ***** is. Get away from me, you virgin!")
PROS
1.The phone is good for taking up close pictures, even though you won't get to take a picture of a hot girl because of the described situation above
2.It has many coool features, like virgin XL
3.Its a really amazing phone if you don't plan to show it to anybody
I hope my review will help somebody in their buying decision.
THANK YOU FOR READING THIS REVIEW!!!!!!!
Try tracfone instead !!!.......2006-03-01
Tracfone gives better deals in minutes. It is perfect for those with light, in town usage. It only uses one unit per minute, two if you're outside of your area code(roaming), and long distance doesn't cost any extra. The airtime doesn't cost a fortune, and you have no credit checks, or monthly bills. Reception is good because they utilize many different providers instead of just one. They also have a referral program, so you can earn 100 extra minutes for free if your friends and family buy one too(they also get 180 minutes). If you want a referral to get started with 100 free minutes, just e-mail me at amitgames@yahoo.com , I'd be happy to send you the link!
Amazon.com Product Description
Like most of its compatriots in Compaq's expansive Presario S5000nx series of computers, the Presario S5000nx Desktop PC is intended for light- to medium-use situations where cost is the overriding factor. However, being the entry-level model of what is essentially an entry-level series, this unit is definitely not recommended for anything other than the absolute basics. Its price is certainly right, but if you intend to go beyond such general duties as word processing, homework and email, you should either check into another Compaq model or upgrade key components.
The Presario S5000nx Desktop is driven by a price-conscious Intel Celeron processor operating at 2.5 GHz -- an adequately fast CPU but not nearly as capable or as forward-looking as Intel's flagship processor, the Pentium 4. Compaq has added the bare minimum of RAM memory -- 128 MB (upgradeable to 1 GB) - and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with just 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system is not intended for 3-D games, 3-D graphics, multitasking, or even marginally demanding business applications.
To store and transfer your data, the Presario S5000nx Desktop is equipped with a smallish 40 GB hard disk, a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a CD-RW drive that supports CD burning and playing but no DVD operations. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port for high-speed LAN and Internet access, and a half-dozen fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has not included a FireWire port (normally used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders). Monitor and speakers are sold separately, thus allowing you to choose from the many options available today.
Customer Reviews:
Very upgradabe for minor cost.......2004-10-28
This PC is very solid performer. As other have stated it comes pretty bare bones for $400-$500 dollars. (...)
I upgraded to 1GB, added an internal DVD +RW burner, added a PC TV Card, added a 128MB graphics card and a Firewire card. I also have a 120GB external hard drive and an external HP 300e DVD burner. I also use a digital camera and camcorder. With the exception of the NVIDIA Graphics card I used rebates on the other upgrades.
The machine now SMOKES!!!
I burn CDs & DVDs, edit videos, watch TV, download using Comcast cable at 400kbs and surf the WEB - all at the same time with little or very minimal processor delay.
I have been very happy with the machine. If I had bought a similiarly configured machine I would have paid hundreds more.
My best suggestion for those interested in this or a similar machine is make sure you have plenty of memory - I suggest 1GB is the best investment you can make. Also, 40GB drive is too small for today's apps.
I would not recommend this machine as it comes out of the box unless all you want to do is surf the WEB on a dial-up modem and do simple word processing.
amazing pc.......2004-06-14
i love this pc i got it as a birthday present and it is awsome. it runs multiple files so easily.mine came with 248 MB of ram and 2.60 GHZ i got it at wall-mart for $500.the only reason i gave it 4 stars is because it does not run games to perfectly.but,it downloads things(like songs, and games) very fast.all around a good computer(even though it is a little noisy)
p.s. i love the burner/compact disk combo drive
Solid starting machine... just add RAM!.......2004-05-08
This is a solid starter computer.
Note the two different cosmetic faces this computer can have.
All you need to do is add ram. I added a 512mb PC2100 chip ($99 05/04) to this machine and it flies. I can play Madden 2004 just fine. Regularly, I will have opera full of windows, adobe photoshop, macromedia dreamweaver, winamp, seti@home, antivirus, two messenger programs running... and the computer is well under control. I can flip back and forth to windows with ease without any problems. If you want to play the latest games, then ofcourse, you're to need a better machine with a dedicated video card, but otherwise this is a great machine for 95% of tasks. The case has a small footprint, which I like. Note that I didn't use the modem, but the onboard network card is fine and I threw a second hard drive in with ease.
The front USB ports are handy.
Would be zero stars if possible........2004-04-27
This was supposed to be a new computer, however, when it arrived, the box said that it was refurbished.
The modem did not work.
The customer service was poor. Obtaining a return authorization was like pulling teeth.
Other that that, everything was great!!!
My recommendation -- do not buy from Compaq or Office Depot.
Compaq Presario S5000nx.......2004-01-03
This is a great machine for the price and I have had no problems with it so far. I upgraded the Ram to 256mb for a net cost of $40 over the purchase price...still a good deal! The Intergrated Intel graphics now uses up to 64mb of shared Ram rather than the 32mb when just 128mb Ram is installed. I picked this machine up at Radio Shack and mated it to a Samsung Syncmaster 753DF monitor. The support from Compaq is easy to access and the documentaion is clear. The machine does not ship with recovery disks..so I burnt my own following the instructions (6 disks) which took about 45 minutes. So what if it is not the best gaming machine around..that's what I have an X-box for! For my purposes, the S5000nx does the basics very well (WP, e-mail, I-net, tunes, burning, etc) at a hard to beat price.
