Amazon.com Product Description

The Bose 3-2-1 GS Series II progressive-scan DVD home entertainment system packs greater visceral power, broader media flexibility, and richer sound into an even less obtrusive speaker set. Half the size of the original 3-2-1 system's speakers, Bose's patented Gemstone speaker array works in concert with the system's TrueSpace surround processing to deliver a spacious, multichannel presentation from just 2 visible speakers and a hideaway Acoustimass module.

The system comes with a central DVD/CD media center, a pair of shelf speakers, a powered Acoustimass module (subwoofer), and everything you need to hook it all up with ease. Using Bose TrueSpace proprietary digital processing circuitry, the 3-2-1 GS.II system improves the sense of spaciousness imparted by stereo recordings and exciting movie effects from Dolby Digital and DTS surround-encoded materials. Yet its few parts require little effort to set up, so you can enjoy your new system's performance right away--it even comes with a helpful system setup and demo disc.

The DVD/CD player plays your DVD-Video movies (select from NTSC and PAL video formats) and CD-based music, including MP3 files written to recordable CD-R or CD-RW (including artist and title information display). Disc features include repeat and random play, DVD parental controls, forward and reverse chapter/track skip, and scanning within tracks.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the 3-2-1 GS.II's media center is equipped to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Proprietary Videostage 5 decoding circuitry goes beyond conventional digital technology to bring new life to old movies and music. It gives you a surround sound experience from practically any source, including older media such as videotapes, stereo CDs, even mono TV programs. Advanced post-processing techniques automatically deliver a clear, on-screen audio center image and balanced surround sound, similar to that of a 5.1-encoded DVD.

In the Bose Acoustimass module, 2 downward-firing drivers give you powerful performance for the lowest audible notes and effects. And proprietary Bose technology ensures that you hear with clarity the proper balance of deep lows from all channels for music and movies. Hide the module almost anywhere, even behind furniture, and all the sound seems to come from the small cube speaker arrays.

Other features include AM/FM tuning with 40 preset stations (20 FM, 20 AM), a sleep timer (1 to 90 minutes), and console input jacks for connecting other source components (such as a VCR, DSS, CD changer, or tape deck).

If you have other Bose hardware already in place--a Wave music system, a 3-2-1 Series II DVD system, or a Lifestyle system--you can hook it up to this 3-2-1 GS.II system using an optional 50-foot Bose link B connection cable to extend your entertainment to an additional listening area. You can also expand upon the 3-2-1- GS.II system later by integrating it with a Lifestyle system.

What's in the Box
An integrated AM/FM tuner and DVD/CD player (media center); 2 shelf speakers with rubber feet; a floor-standing Acoustimass module (subwoofer) with rubber feet; AM/FM antennas; an antenna stand; a module cable; a system speaker cable; a composite-video cable; a stereo analog audio interconnect (red/white RCA); an infrared remote control; remote batteries; an AC power cord; a user's manual; a quick-setup guide; a setup and demo disc; and warranty information.

Note: Bose recommends that you maintain at least 3 feet (1 meter) of space between the 2 speakers with no more than 3 feet (1 meter) between each speaker and the edge of your TV screen.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfied.......2007-08-15

I bought this system for my bedroom to get better sound than was produced by the little speakers built into the TV. I was looking for a system that offered good sound quality, a DVD player and would provide a surround experience using a minimum amount of space. I did not want speakers in back since it was hard enough to get my wife to agree to put any speakers at all in the bedroom. This is a very compact system that offers great sound for what you see. I also have a full blown home theater set-up in my family room that cost many thousands of dollars and provides even better sound than a movie theater. The Bose 3.2.1 is not that kind of system and does not pretend to be. It is an excellent system with two very small speakers and a sub-woofer that only has a dvd/cd player to power it. I would buy it again.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds great, plays great........2007-07-05

I'm going to keep this relatively simple and just cut to the facts of my own personal experience with this system.

The sound is amazing in my apartment. Even though it's not "true" surround sound, I can clearly hear things coming from the rear left and right spaces in my living room. Check out the intro bit to "Tenacious D's The Pick of Destiny" for a great example of what this system can do in regards to a surround effect.

I have never had any problems playing any discs in this sytem with regards to it reading the discs themselves. DVDs, DVD-Rs, DVD-Audio, and CDs have all played without a hitch. My iPod also sounds great playing through this system.

There were a couple times where the disc tray wouldn't open because my son had gunked up the playable side of a DVD with sticky fingerprints, but a SOLUTION IS GIVEN IN THE PRODUCT MANUAL ITSELF for rectifying such a situation. It takes all of two seconds to "fix," and this wasn't Bose's fault at all.

The picture quality is as groovy as any I've seen on a higher-end model. Personally, I don't own an HD TV, so I don't care about the hookups regarding that. It looks stellar on a standard def set. That's all I need it to do in regards to that.

I don't care that it doesn't have a headphone jack. I bought this thing to fully hear and experience some great sound. I got what I paid for. When I had a house, I had a full 5.1 system with the speakers wired behind me and everywhere else. Guess what? I still prefer this sytem.

I have my TV set on a standard entertainment console that I got at IKEA. The two main speakers I have sitting in front of the TV's speakers (I have the TV speakers shut off). It's perfect separation to my ears and provides all the effects flawlessly, with no need to find a "sweet spot" in my living room to sit in or any of that hoo-ha. I was amazed at this player's sound even while standing in the adjoining kitchen and at a perpendicular angle.

This is a rare high-end purchase where I've never felt bad about making a monthly payment. It's everything I hoped it would be and then some. Hardcore audiophiles are going to gripe about technicalities till they're blue in the face. This system is obviously not for them. And for the reviewers saying you can get a 39 dollar DVD player that's just as good, I say you're full of it. I've had a numnber of those, and yeah, they play DVDs just fine, but they don't offer an outstanding audio experience like this system.

To finish, I'd like to say that the setup was a snap, and I was able to easily integrate my Tivo and video game console with no problems whatsoever. Bose has made a great product here, period.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible system - don't make the same mistake we all did!.......2007-05-28

I bought this system for the compact form factor and good sound. At home, the sound is adequate but not great. The size is good. And for the first 5 months, the performance was okay. I read many reviews about problems with this system crashing and counted myself lucky that I didn't get one of those 'lemons.'

Well, think again. In the last 4 weeks, the system has begun to crash repeatedly. Many times, I can't get eject my DVD without restarting >10 times. Many times, I hear the DVD spinning even when the system is supposed to be off. Some people say they can't play 1/5 DVDs. Well, it's more like 80% of my DVDs! I put them in my other system and they play flawlessly. This system has ruined my perception of Bose - poor quality with horrible support (they refuse to fix this fatal problem). I will never buy from them again - and I would never recommend this system to anyone. Believe the bad reviews - don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars what a piece of junk.......2007-05-25

Amazon really needs a zero stars option for total junk like this. I admit, I purchased an older version of the 3-2-1 about 4 years ago, and the thing has been nothing but crap. The worst problem is that it is incredibly selective with DVD menus. Generally, films work fine, but I have had problem after problem with TV show DVDs, that tend to have more viewing options. For example, about half of the Buffy Chosen Collection is unwatchable on this system, whereas it play fine on my PC, as well as on a cheap, $35 DVD player from Wal-Mart.

The reason I am writing this review, however, is that the manufacturer has suggested to me that if a menu chokes the system up, try resetting it by unplugging the power cord from the Accoutamass (or whatever) module. That works about 15% of the time. And tonight, following that suggestion, the Accoustimass actually CAUGHT FIRE, billowing smoke and throwing sparks from the outlet. Thank God this didn't happen when I wasn't home.

Of course, mine is old enough to not have a warranty or anything, but when you pay a grand for something, you expect it to not crap out in less than 4 years.

That said, I did think the sound was pretty decent. But, at the price, I would say do not buy one of these. It is not worth it. You can buy good surround systems for under $400. this is nothing but a gimmick and Bose should be ashamed of itself. I'll never buy another Bose product again.

Sure, it is an impressive idea. But in fact, this is a bit like buying a Ferrari and finding out it has an engine from a Geo Metro. Don't be fooled.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for those of us with other things to do.......2004-10-28

The truth is, there is nothing more easy than setting up this incredible system. In just a few minutes (literally) you are set up and ready to watch that brand new DVD. This Bose system is perfect for those of us who just want to listen to a CD while doing housework. And it's perfect for an 8 year old to insert the DVD and watch it in perfect surround sound without trying to figure out all the bells and whistles on a typical receiver.

Okay, I know it is "simulated" surround sound, but I honestly don't notice a difference from our old "real" surround sound system. Which, by the way, we rarely turned on because it was too much trouble to adjust all those settings just perfect. This system does all that stuff for you. You turn on the TV to watch your favorite program and there it is automatically in big beautiful sound. That's it.

Want to watch a DVD? Insert it into the DVD player and it starts automatically. Your show is in surround. Want to listen to a CD? Insert it and go do your stuff. No buttons, programs, fixing the treble and bass, adjusting those slide knobs, nothing.

But, if you feel the need to have that control, Bose lets you do that too. It's all fully adjustable via remote control. We needed to adjust the treble on a CD we made on our PC, and that was easy too.

Get this for it's incredible sound and ease of use. You'll be glad you did. And did I mention all those wires are now gone?

1 out of 5 stars Bose- Overpriced, cheaply made testament to advertising........2004-02-04

Bose is a fascinating case study of what the power of advertising can do for a product that is cheaply made and outperformed by nearly all of its competition. Based on audio theories from the 1960's and parts of lower quality than what can be bought at Radio Shack, Bose has built an incredible empire out of poorly designed products.

Consumers should do their research before shelling out money for Bose speakers. A google search will bring you to epinions or audioreview websites where you can find review after review from buyers of Bose products.

The commonly accepted wisdom in audio circles is that Bose makes low audio quality products and sells them at very high prices. In other words those Polk, JBL, Wharfedale or Infinity mid-fi products you can find at Amazon are usually higher quality at much better price points.

Compare the sound if you ever get a chance. Make sure you DO NOT depend on volume, in other words volume is a bad indicater of quality. Listen for the high and low notes and to the clarity of the music. Tough to do in a showroom at Circuit City or Best Buy, but even there the differences will show up. Bose attempts to prevent consumers from doing this by segregating their products away from the competition.

After this you might look at online audio magazines (do a google search), Audioreview (one word) and Audiogon. You'll find whole NEW world of audio products such as PSB, Paradigm, Vandersteen, Quad, Sonus Faber, ACI and many more who's products will put you on a much higher level of audio than you'd ever imagine. Usually these speakers are SEVERAL times more electronically sophisticated than Bose at the same price! Good luck and happy hunting!

4 out of 5 stars Quality sound that you would expect from Bose.......2004-01-03

It sounds good but understandably if you are looking for true surround sound it's not your answer. With this system you will get more of a high quality stereo effect. The trade off is it is easy to set-up. You will be enjoying your movies in about half an hour. This is easily accomplished because all the wires can be hidden behind the entertainment center.

5 out of 5 stars its worth the money.......2003-11-06

this small package packs a huge punch. the sound is great, its easy to use and simple to put together. in my opinion, it is well worth the money.

I have a sony Video camera. To get the video off of the camera I bought this firewore cable. It bent the pins on the connector on the video camera. I had to buy another VC to put the DV tapes in to get the video into my computer. I bought a different cable for that camera.

2 out of 5 stars LCD Screen faulty after 1 year.......2007-06-12

The phone works fine, except that the LCD panel for the Caller ID is no longer readable after 1 year. AT&T says to just buy a new phone, which is a shame because the rest of the phone works fine.

2 out of 5 stars Think twice or more before buying.......2006-05-20

At first it worked fine, although battery life was low. When the original Nicads gave out I bought NMIH batteries. Note: No one should use Nicads anymore.
Anyway, after less than 3 years the LCD of one of the phones has become unreadable. I called AT&T and they just said buy new phones.

4 out of 5 stars Great phone set- very functional!.......2005-09-14

I've found these phones to be very sturdy- I've owned a set for about 4 years! The transmitter is in the back of my house and I can still walk halfway down the block before losing the signal. I use an external headset with them, clip one of the phones to my waist, and catch up on my calls outside while gardening. The numbers and letters on the buttons are inset into the pieces, so they will never rub off. I've dropped them occasionally so there are scratches, but never a problem functioning.

You can choose between ring patterns to pick the one that sounds best to you, and store numbers in the phone book that you call up by dialing the first letter of your friend's name or using the menu arrows to scroll. I've never had a problem with the volume I or callers hear, and you can adjust it up or down depending on the signal. There are many menus that let you set a lot of different references- I don't think they're very complex, especially if you're used to using menus on mobile phones. I like being able to page the handsets when I can't remember where I've left them- the one bummer is that paging calls both of them at the same time, and then I have to turn the sound off the one whose location I know before I can find the one that's misplaced.

I think the battery issues that other reviews mention is an issue that a lot of phones using Ni-Cad batteries can have- it's an issue of rechargeable batteries that's made worse by the way that most phones are in continuous use. It's often called "memory effect," and I don't see a lot of manufacturers talking a lot about it, perhaps because they want to keep selling you batteries once the phone is yours- how else are they going to keep getting your money?

I won't go into the technicalities of memory effect (you can look it up on the web), but here's what I do, and it's worked well for me with these phones. Once the phone is charged, I don't replace it on the charger AT ALL until it's got no charge at all. Once it runs out of juice I switch to the other phone. I even wait a day before putting the dead phone back on the charger. (And the charged phone I just started using will not go on the charger until it's dead- both get treated the same). By letting the battery drain as much as possible before putting it on the charger, then charging it for at least 6-8 hours so it's fully charged, I minimize memory effect and get a fully charged battery each time that lasts for days even with all the phone hours I log each day.

Eventually, any rechargeable battery will lose its ability to hold a charge, and phones that are in regular use get discharged and charged a lot. With my system of charging phones, I'm able to have a really long battery life. I always date the battery when I install it, and the last battery I changed in June 2005 was installed Nov 2003! I use Radio Shack replacements with a 350mAh capacity.

If you do the opposite of the method I describe and your default is to have the phone on the charger most of the time- picking it up, making a call, and then putting it back on the charger over and over, it won't be long before the battery will barely hold a charge.

The one feature I miss is that the keys aren't lit from inside the unit, so you can't dial in the dark unless you know how to touch-dial. There is a reference bump on the "5" button, so it's not impossible if you remember where the on button is. I'd like to be able to dial quickly in case of a middle of the night emergency, and occasionally I miss this feature even though it's not an emergency.

In my experience this has been a great purchase. I was surprised to see so many poor reviews- I have had none of the issues they mention.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2004-11-27

I have had this phone for over a year and it is ideal for my situation. I have one jack upstairs and one in the kitchen. You get two phones in one with only one base set to plug in. I keep the base and one handset upstairs and the extension phone downstairs that doesn't have to be plugged in. It is the best phone I have owned and I have bought expensive ones in the past. I wish I could get another extension phone to add to it. I may just buy another set for myself for Xmas.

1 out of 5 stars poor.......2004-11-18

My husband bought this phone shortly before we were married and never had any trouble with it, than shortly after we were married it started acting up sometimes not even letting us answer it. The caller ID is totally unreliable and is iffy at times. <br /> The reseption on it is mute at times. I have answered the phone before to find that it hung up on me all on its own. I tell my husband that it is the demon phone. We tried to replace it but had just as much trouble from that one. All in all im still on the hunt for the perfect phone. One thats not possesed.

    Product Description

A 2.4 GHz cordless phone from AT&T, the 1177 is a complete communications center, stocked with features such as a built-in answering machine, an internal phone directory, and caller ID/call waiting compatibility. With a 90-number caller ID memory and 50-number telephone directory, you can easily access a list of all the latest incoming calls, as well as store all your important numbers for quick lookup and dialing. Simply scroll to the desired entry and press talk to dial the displayed number. A 10-number speed dial also lets you store the most frequently dialed numbers for even quicker recall. You can assign a distinctive ring to telephone directory entries, providing an auditory indication of the incoming callers identity. A built-in speakerphone and dual keypads allow you to dial without use of the handset, while headset compatibility enables hands-free communication, helping to save your neck in the process. With the intercom function, you can talk between the base and handset, and three-way conferencing lets both base and handset talk with an outside call. You can easily adjust handset and ringer volume levels, as well as mute your end of the conversation. With the redial button, you can quickly dial the last outgoing number, while a page button lets you find a lost handset without hassle. The built-in digital answering machine has one mailbox, which has a 15-minute maximum recording time. The maximum message is 4 minutes, and you can record an outgoing message of up to 90 seconds. With memo recording, you can record a note to yourself or leave a message for another household member. When you are away from home, you can still stay in touch by utilizing the remote access feature. Simply log in with your security code and use your keypad to playback and delete messages, record a new outgoing message, or leave yourself a memo. The 1177 is also wall-mountable and comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.
