Works OK.......2004-02-07
My new working model does most of what I needed it for. It has an array of buttons on the front that allow you to do a quick scan, send to the Web, e-mail, and photocopy, and a few other buttons whose purposes I haven't deduced yet. (The scanner came with a quick-start card and software, but no manual.) The software included a limited version of Corel Print Office (without templates)- -like Microsoft Publisher, E-Fax messenger Plus, HP Photo Smart (for organizing photographs), and HP PrecisionScan. No OCR software was included. The software installed satisfactorily on my aging IBM 600 Laptop running Windows 2000. Of these software packages, the only one I actually use is the HP PrecisionScan.
Black and white text images scan with acceptable, but not great quality. I used the photocopy button on the scanner to photocopy some pages from a book, and a handy copy machine interface appeared on my monitor, where I could select the number of copies, the quality of the print, and adjust the contrast. With the text and photo setting selected, the page came out printed gray, so I had to choose the text-only setting. With the text-only setting and high quality printing selected, the background text was white, but the letters of the text were still rather pixilated when the copies came off the printer. In a pinch, I could use this scanner for photocopying, but this wouldn't be my tool of choice to get the job done well.
One of the main reasons I selected this scanner was that I needed an affordable way to scan in photographic slides for my Website and PowerPoint shows. This scanner comes with an ATA device with a backlight for scanning slides and negatives. The plug for the ATA device is on the back of the machine, and it's a real trick to get it in. I found myself standing the scanner on end vertically and fighting with the plug, praying all the while that I didn't break something inside the machine while I struggled. But in the end, I got the ATA plug in, and vowed never to unplug it. Which is a pain, because then you need to find a place to store the ATA device within a short distance of the scanner, but not on the glass because its funny shape will dent the scanner lid. When I finally got the ATA working, I found the scanning quality once again to be acceptable, but not great. After scanning a slide, I almost always have to adjust the color in my photo editing software, usually bringing down the blues and playing up the reds. I had better luck with the old non-electrical plastic reflective slide scanning pyramids that HP used to give away. I wish you could purchase them somewhere- -I've found directions for making them out of paper on the web, but the plastic ones worked at least as well as the expensive ATA device.
I've also tried scanning some negatives using the ATA device. Ugh! I tried scanning them in negative mode with the PrecisionScan software, and they came out dark with no reds at all. With a lot of brightening, the image was generally recognizable, but not aesthetic. I also tried scanning negatives in slide mode and then reversing the colors in my photo editing software, with virtually identically results- -dark with no reds. By changing the scans to gray scale and lightening them a lot, the images could almost be made acceptable, but not quite.
So, if you're looking for a scanner that produces acceptable, but not great, scans from text or slides, and you already have your own OCR software and you don't need to scan negatives, then this scanner might do the job. But buy it well before your deadline in case you get a bad one and need to return it.
Great for scanning documents and photos, but nothing else.......2002-01-08
Here is the bottom line, this is a great scanner for documents and photos. In fact, scanning a 4x6 photo produces excellent results... better than scanning the corresponding negative. How is this you ask? I would like to know the answer as well. As far as I can tell I could not get HP Precisionscan Pro to get what I'd call a decent scan on a negative. Theoretically a 2400dpi optical scan would give me about a 3200x2300 pixel image. At 48 bit color, one could imagine the detail. Well keep imagining. As I mentioned the best I could get was the same scan quality of a 4x6 print and even that was questionable. I sent an e-mail to HP support and have had no response for 4 days now. I'd like to give HP the benefit of the doubt, but if I can't get answers, I'm sure I can find anther scanner at 1/2 the price to do photos and documents just as well, even if it is the 4470.
scanner for the die-hard graphics artist.......2001-12-14
But Amazon was very quick at replacing the defective product. On second try, I found the 2400x2400 dpi resolution to be so much more than was necessary that I was shocked. My experience with inferior products worried me about buying anything less. At 2400, you could probably make highway billboard posters without any added granualarity!
As for speed, the scanning rate is very quick for 400dpi and less. The software included on the CD-ROm facilitates productive work. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was how powerful, precise and quick the photo negative/slide scanner is! This feature kept me from returning it. It, too has nice editing tools in the software and integrates well with Adobe products.
If I were to buy over again, I would downgrade to the 4400 series.

Canon XL1 Digital Camcorder Kit
Manufacturer: Canon USA ProductGroup: Photography Binding: Electronics Accessories:
Product Features:
ASIN: B000050FA5 |
Product Description
This mini DV offers great image quality and full digital power. The XL1's design and manual controls offer the widest range of picture possibilities. In daylight or lowlight, if your subject is near or far, this cutting edge camera adjusts its settings to offer the finest in resolution, magnification and color reproduction. Additional features include top grip with recording controls, standard optical 16x zoom lens with SuperRange optical image stabilizer and 3 shooting modes.Amazon.com Product Description
The Canon XL1 is helping to blur the line between consumer and professional video equipment. Though it's small enough to carry around and doesn't cost much more than a top-of-the-line consumer camcorder, the XL1 produces such high-quality results that many independent filmmakers have started using it instead of a traditional film camera.Great movies start with great CCD sensors, and Canon cuts no corners here. For the best possible picture quality, they use three separate 270,000 pixel CCDs (one for each primary color). To further improve image detail, Canon has intentionally shifted the green CCD half a pixel horizontally and vertically. This shift allows more accurate interpolation, resulting in an image that Canon claims rivals those from cameras with 410,000 pixel CCDs. Each pixel is 72 square microns, which is about 1.5 times the size as those in competing camcorders. This increased size increases light sensitivity, allowing you to shoot in lower-light situations. Ultimately, the larger pixel size results in an improvement of 4 dB in sensitivity.
The XL1's body is based on a magnesium-alloy frame for maximum durability. It ships with a 16x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization, but is also compatible with other XL camcorder lenses. With an optional adapter, you can use Canon EF (EOS) still camera lenses--some of which also feature optical image stabilization.
Though the camera's built-in microphone has a great frequency response, the XL1 can also accept balanced microphones with the optional MA-100 microphone adapter/shoulder pad. The XL1 records digital audio, with two channels of 16 bit/48 KHz sound or 4 channels of 12 bit/32 KHz sound.
The electronics of the XL1 have many advanced features, including a number of programmed AE modes, as well as both shutter and aperture priority modes. There are two different auto modes, one of which allows you to adjust any setting manually, if you want, and the other, which adjusts every setting automatically and lets you adjust nothing. A spotlight mode automatically compensates for difficulties when shooting a subject bathed in a spotlight. There are also three different shooting modes: Normal Movie, Digital Photo, and Frame Movie. Normal Movie mode is for any time you want to shoot video footage. Digital photo mode records a still image for six seconds on the mini DV tape and also captures any audio, such as a commentary. The Frame Movie Mode records 30 noninterlaced still images per second, instead of capturing 60 fps interlaced images. This mode isn't intended to be used for shooting video (playback may not look completely smooth). Rather, Frame Movie mode should be used as a burst, or continuous, shooting mode, like you'd find on a still camera.
The XL1 uses an IEEE 1394 port for digital editing and for transferring footage to and from other IEEE 1394 compliant devices. The camcorder also has RCA (composite) audio and video ports, and an S-Video out. The XL1 features a LANC terminal for editing with compatible controllers.

XL-1 IS A FINE TOY FOR ALL.......2001-10-01
This camera is super. There are some features that were added to the XL-1S which make this camera stand out over Sony. There are web sites that teach how to use the camera and how to get around some of the XL-1 problems.
This has been the camera of choice for most news organizations that travel the world. Add the EOS adapter and you have a camera that does more than any other camera made in its price range. Before you buy listen to the pros that use this camera, do a search at google.com for tips and tricks and the XL-1 web sites. Then decide between the Sony and Canon.

Castlewood Systems ORB2UE01 2.2 GB External USB Removable Media Drive
Manufacturer: Castlewood Systems ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics ASIN: B00004TS1D |
Product Description
Castlewood's removable media drive product, named ORB uses 3.5" removable media with a capacity of 2.2 GB, more than any other product in its category. Additionally, at an impressive 12.2Mbps maximum ORB sustained data transfer rate-the fastest transfer rate of any removable media product available today-is completely "video ready." ORB disks can be used in a variety of applications that require storage of large amounts of large files and digital data, such as music and video editing, graphic design, publishing and multimedia presentations. Information technology (IT) markets are expected to use ORB drives as a way to easily and quickly back up data, and increase PC storage.Castlewood is providing ORB Tools, a feature-rich suite of functions designed to help manage your ORB disks and make backups as intuitive for the novice as the professional. ORB Tools feature: Write Protect, Disk Partitioning and Formatting, Set ORB as Fixed or Removable, a file archive called "tracker," ORB Disk Duplicator, SCSI Mounter, and other useful maintenance functions. The ORB Tools Backup Suite includes 1-Click Backup, Volume Copy, Image Copy and Professional Backup. For the novice, ORB's one-step backup sets a new standard for thoroughness, simplicity and security by automating system disk and file backups. Also, ORB drives use a new design, called "headerless ID," thus eliminating the need for disk formatting.Customer Reviews:
Excellent product.......2002-06-18
Performance is good, I usually back up around 700MB in 20-25 minutes, certainly I don't feel it to be too slow. I have travelled internationally several times with my ORB and a few disks without experiencing any problem.
The main issue I had was buying other disks in England in 2001 when Castlewood was supplying the US market first and most shops across the ocean ran out of stock. I wish those disks were more widely available, they are impossible to find in Mexico for example.
Cheap, fast, good. Possibly 3 out of 3?.......2002-02-06
It was easy to install, easy to use, seems quite reliable. Fast enough random file access to keep me very happy. Vast improvement over backup with ZIP disks, which was starting to get silly for even 4GB partial backups.
Tough to find the disks, I have to agree there with other reviewers. I ordered a bunch when I bought the drive, and re-use them. Have been looking to buy a new batch, and had to look a little harder than I thought. At first, they seemed to have disappeared from the face of the Earth, and I was ... that such a good product might have vanished... But I found a few places that carry them, though they aren't heavily advertised, as they were when they first came out.
Only problem I've had is a little annoyance with the drive refusing to read the disk. I sometimes have to reinsert the disk a few times, or even restart the computer & drive before I get the disk recognized. I don't know if that's the fault of the disk, the driver, or the drive itself, but that seems to be the most common complaint around. However, it's just an intermittant problem for me, and I've been able to work around it without difficulty. Then again, I don't need to make large daily backups (monthly, at most). I suppose if I did, that problem would be more irksome.
So beware- if you want to rely on this drive heavily, be cautious, it could be problematic. Whatever QC manufacturing problems they seem to be having haven't been surmounted yet. But if you just like the convenience of large, cheap, reusable storage, like I do, this is a far better alternative to a Jaz drive.
Can not make it work........2001-10-29
Cheap storage, fast.......2001-10-26
I have the external USB/SCSI version, and four disks. I had one disk go bad on me, and Castlewood sent me a new one in no time.
I recommend the Orb for people who consistently have large files to move around to different computers. For example, if you have huge amounts of data to take from your office to your home, or vice versa, the Orb would be the most bang for the buck. You would probably need two drive units, but it's worth it.
Stay away!.......2001-10-17
