Your Personal Digital Assistant makes it a habit to bring your portable text collector with you, and you are always ready to read and save text from books, papers, brochures or business cards. You can easily record price-lists, timetables, wine-tips or witty quotes. You don't have to tear out pages any more. Your saved text files can later be transferred to your PC. It is also possible to use C-Pen to read text directly into a Windows application in your PC.

The C Pen 600 is a delightful ergonomic scanner with a remarkably intuitive interface. Plus, it provides much better scanning accuracy than we thought possible from a handheld model. Although it isn't ideal for scanning long tracts of text, its dictionary, translation, and other features give the scanner a usefulness that extends beyond mere text storage.
The C-Pen 600 is much thicker and wider than a real pen, but it is still comfortable to hold. All the buttons are within easy reach. A crisp LCD on the front of the device provides real-time feedback as you scan and also displays the various icons and menus used for navigating and accessing the C-Pen's features.
The C-Pen's user interface is absolutely ingenious--a small thumb wheel at one end of the device is moved up or down to highlight menu choices, and then pressed to make a selection. It took us only 30 seconds to grasp the fundamentals. The designers were also thoughtful enough to let lefties flip the display, allowing the device to be used comfortably in either hand.
To scan text, just put the tip of the C-Pen flat on the page, hold down a button to activate the scanner, and drag the device across the text. Release the button at the end of the line and repeat the process as many times as you need to. All the text you've scanned is displayed in the LCD window, where you can edit, move, or delete the text as needed. When you're finished, the newly digitized text can be uploaded to your notebook or a PC via an infrared port. (Most desktop PCs do not have IR ports, so you may have to factor one into the cost of a C Pen).
In our test, the unit did a terrible job of interpreting text if the text was in a nonstandard font or was of poor quality. The C Pen would not be a good tool for getting information from a mangled fax into your computer, and you can forget about handwriting recognition.
We wondered how easy it would be to enter file names or edit text with the device, and the designers attempted to address this task through the use of C Write technology. The premise is you move the pen as if you were writing, and the C Write software interprets the movements and displays the corresponding letter or number. It required an hour or so of practice after calibrating the C Pen, but we eventually were able to achieve a reasonable level of accuracy with C Write. One caveat: you can't "write" on a one-color surface like a desktop or blank sheet of paper. It has to be patterned; a page of printed text works fine for a background.
The C Pen 600 stores up to 2,000 pages of text and comes with a CD that lets users choose one two-way translation dictionary, like English/French, English/Spanish, or English/German. Using the translation software stored in the C Pen's memory, it's possible to scan a word in one of the languages and translate it to the other instantly. This feature will probably add to the C-Pen 600's professional appeal, and we feel anyone who spends some time with the device will be amazed at just how accurate and useful it can be. --T. DON'T WORRY... it's worth the money!.......2005-08-10
I received my c-pen 600c this morning and, within only an hour or so, it was up and running. A couple of trial goes with the pen and you are soon scanning like a pro.
DON'T WORRY IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS XP - some of the previous reviewers of the 600c and 800 have complained about compatibility with windows XP but I had no problems. You go to the c-pen website and just download the update - easy!
My 'first-timer' advice - do a trial scan with the pen and remember you have to 'exit' and it will then give you the option to 'save'. Save it (file name 'test' or whatever). Then go online and download the update. The 'my c-pen' icon will show on your desktop. Connect your pen to the computer via cable of IFR and make sure the pen is ON. ONLY then, go into 'my c-pen' and the 'test' file should show.
DON'T WORRY IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS - I sent an email to the c-pen support team (just about the possibility of getting a USB cable instead of the COM port cable - one feature of the c-pen that isn't so good) and had an answer within a couple of hours.
ACCURACY - it is hit and miss which you sort of expect with this kind of gadget. Sometimes it is brilliant and other times it just can't get it! Be vigilant - check the screen reads correctly before doing the next line - and you'll be fine. It's really easy to delete the last line scanned and try again. A flat surface seems to be a must.
IS IT WORTH IT? - I got a pretty good deal on my pen - I wouldn't really have liked to spend over £100 for this. However, it is an investment if you spend a lot of time typing out text (I'm a postgraduate student doing research and I know this is going to be an invaluable tool). I am also impressed with the amount of text memory (1500 pages) - great for long days in the library.
In closing, I would like to urge you not to be scared off by the previous reviews - in my experience it isn't so bad at all!
Good, but with drawbacks.......2003-09-30
I like this gadget, although it's far from perfected yet. I use it mainly to look up words in foreign books as I go along. For that purpose it usually works great and saves me a huge amount of time leafing through paper dictionaries or poking at the keyboards of electronic pocket dictionaries. (Note that the C Pen only looks up words in dictionaries. It cannot "translate", as the promos claim it can.) It takes a little time to get skilled at scanning text, and in a recent book I was reading it couldn't recognize the frequent German letter combination "sch" in a relatively normal typeface. Usually, however, it presents no serious difficulties.
For scanning large amounts of text, I don't think it's very convenient, because it's just too slow and not very accurate. You can, however, transfer the text to your computer and run a spellcheck on it in Word or some other program. That helps a bit. One nice thing is that it's smart enough to know that when it hits a hypen at the end of a line it probably needs to join the divided word.
It's sad that C Pens are so hard to get. It has the potential for great popularity, but in my experience Swedish companies let their popular items just get rare, rather than meeting market demand.

I used to had to manually copy excerpts and text from books while doing reasearxh, one day I saw this kid at the library come in, pulled a stacjk of bboks and started driving this small pen accross it... I asked him whart that was he showed me the C pen 600 scanner and how it worked, ten minutes later he left and I was still on my first book!
Now I have a life again! Could not live without this little device; I wonder why doesn't everyone else that does reasearch use one. What a time saver and no mistakes is the best!

I had all intentions of purchasing one of these pens to use next college semester. After reading all of the good advice from the ones that have purchased it..I'm sure everyone knows that i will order one just as soon as i am finished writing in this comment box! If it would do what it was intended on doing it would be great for all of these notes that i have to keep up with. And running Windows Me to find that it is not compatible saved me alot of headaches!

When I decided to cough up the $150 dollars, I expected to be amazed by it's power. I was definately wrong. The only thing I found it useful for, was containing addresses and amusing myself. If you are considering purchasing this product, I would suggest you buy it from an Amazon user for a cheaper price.

It's working well on my MacBook. HD programming looks very nice. Surprisingly crisp. Processor usage a bit high. But otherwise a solid 4 1/2 stars. The Lite version of the software is good enough for me; it records, changes channels, etc. Software looks and handles great and is user friendly. Really handy for watching TV and surfing the net. A nifty useful gadget.

This Card isn't quite like the normal WINTVR-1600. It has the addition of a fm tuner as well, which surprised me when I opened the box. This card WILL, however drastically affect the heat output of your system. This card is doing a lot of work, and it outputs at a heat level to match

Anyone needing a hdtv card for there pc needs this card. It meets the requirement of haveing an analog tuner and the two tuners record at the sane time. I have a really cheap antenna and it locks on fully to all the channels I have the antenna faced at. I did't need the remote either because I use my Xbox to watch my tv recordings not my computer. Hope you all get this card becuase it rocks. I am replacing my two pvr 150s with another one of these bad boys.

The board's mono audio function can be heard while viewing video or TV, and it can be connected to the sound card or to speakers. This tuner comes with Color Camera and Stereo WinTV card. Plug-and-Play is used to simplify the installation and setup of the WinTV cards. There are no switches to set and no internal cables to connect!

I've owned this card for a while & I have to agree anything Hauppauge is junk, worthless junk.To make matters worse, their tech support is lame as well. I'll NEVER again buy anything made by these con artists. You'd be better off buying ANY other brand.

I have a somewhat bizarre story. I saw the product on their website, and called early this year (2004) about it. I was told it wasn't going to be available for a couple of months. I thought that meant it was a brand new card. I guess it only meant that it was out of stock. So, I called back a few months later, and was told it was available then, so I bought it. I had a lot of problems with it, but I was thinking I got a brand new card and therefore I just needed to wait for them to get the software ironed out. So, I've been checking their site, waiting for updated software and never found any.
Now I find out the card is discontinued. Rather than getting one of the first ones, I now see that I got one of the last dregs. And as such, there is no support for it. Boy was I taken.
Got it to work after some hacks.......2004-05-13
I've experienced similar problems voiced by the previous two reviewers. However, I found a solution to my WinTV-HD card.
The problem is Hauppauge placed too small a heatsink on the decoder chip. If I run the card in HDTV mode for more than 30 minutes, the chip would overheat bringing down my whole computer system. When I placed my finger on the decoder chip, it was searing hot.
So I twisted the stock passive heatsink off the decoder chip and placed a chipset cooler heatsink that had a fan on it and hooked it up. Viola! Problem solved! Now I watch 1080i HDTV programming on my 19" LCD monitor and am enjoying every minute of it. When I get my Samsung 63" DLP projection TV, I am going to hook this card to it for a complete multimedia home solution.
I still have misgivings with the software driver support, though. I wish Hauppauge would update it for new OS's like XP. Also, those third party recording programs from Beyond TV and WinDVD don't seem to support this board.

I agree with the previous review. I tried this card on 4 different machines and only got it to work on one. I used the "updated" software on the Hauppauge website, which has not been updated since the card came out.
I say I got it to work, but the program crashes after a few minutes and quite often takes WinXP down with it, no way to recover but manually turn the machine off and restart it. I have emailed Hauppauge support 5 times and have received no replies except the standard "received your email, please wait for a response" reply.
I have since bought the dtvsolution MyHD card. It works perfectly. Hauppauge has lost me as a customer, this IS the worst card and software ever produced!!!
The worst supported computer hardware ever!.......2004-03-17
I had a Hauppauge WinTV-GO for a while, and LOVED it, it worked very well, and I never had any trouble. I saw the WinTV-HD and thought it would be a great upgrade to my system at the time (a 1.0 GHz AMD Athlon-based computer w/ Windows XP), so I purchased it. I had nothing but trouble getting the card to work and when it did work it would lock the system up frequently (Even with the most up-to-date drivers, and software). I have since tried the Hauppauge card in two other computers, one a 2.0 GHz Intel P4 computer and finally in my current computer, a 2.8 GHz Intel (HT) P4 and I have never got the card to work reliably.
I have emailed Hauppauge's tech support many times and they continually give me the same response, which doesn't work (Even though I told them it didn't work.) I have up and put my WinTV-GO back in. If you are looking for an HD PC-TV card, do not buy this one, it's a piece of junk.
I will never buy another piece of Hauppauge hardware again.
ATTN: Hauppauge, how about helping your customers when they have problems, and maybe supporting the products you actively sell!
