Please do yourself a favor and don't purchase this scanner. It is by far the WORST scanner I've ever owned. I think my scsi scanner from the early 90's was better, at least it worked. Epson also is notorius for providing terrible support for their products and as far as I can tell no longer provides an updated driver for the 1260 model on their site. You need the full driver to scan slides.

Using this machine needs a lot of patience.Results are OK but the 'getting there'is very slow and not user friendly.Just waiting for enough market research to select my next scanner and will then ditch the 'Perfection 1260' without any regret.

I have had this scanner for about three years - use it moderately, but a lot at the moment. It has always done what is said it would, never any hang ups or errors and the Smart Panel equally seems to do what it says. Apart from the long warmup time, not a bad buy (although not obsolete) Those with problems may well have configuration difficulties or whatever.

I got this as part of a special offer with my Mac G4. I have been using scanners for almost 20 years, and this is *the worst* I have ever had the misfortune to be stuck with. There is no "off" button; the only way to shut it off (and prevent its big green light from illuminating the room) is to unplug it; if it has one-touch copying, I have never succeeded in getting it to work; the software is terrible -- at least fifty per cent of the time it stops making copies for no apparent reason; I use Adobe Photoshop's "twain acquire" function to avoid having to use the software which comes with this thing, but -- again -- half the time it does not work; it is not working now although it worked fine two days ago with the same connection and the same software.
DO NOT waste any time or money on this thing. Even if you receive it for free, don't bother with it -- it will waste so much of your time that you may just grab it and throw it against a wall or something else valuable.
I give it one star because it *does* work every once in a while. That is the only good thing I have to say about this piece of junk.
Decent scanner, mediocre software.......2004-07-28
I purchased a 1260 about 9 months ago after my first-generation scanner (from UMAX) died. The scanner and software were quite easy to set up (on a PC running Windows XP), I've had no hardware problems, and I've found the picture quality to be very acceptable. It's a bit slow to warm up and scan, but both were as expected in this price range.
The bundled EPSON SmartPanel software is a disappointment; it gets the job done but is far from user-friendly (and my low-tech wife still hasn't figured out how to use it).

Nice scanner for the price. My needs were not major so it fits my need perfect.
The only minor problem I have had is making copies. Sometimes when I have several pages to copy, it stops after a copy. But I just power it off and back on and it's fine.

Piece of junk..........2003-08-17
Really slow, low quality, crappy software and no power switch. And good luck getting technical support! My emails got bounced and I could not get through on the phone. Oh, and Epson offers you a "free" web space to post your photos... I read the fine print and it says that you lose your rights to pictures you post! Epson can claim your photos as its own and use them without even acknowledging you, let alone compensating you. So here's the summary: bad product, bad service, and they try to take your photos for themselves!

Here is a quote from an earlier review of this scanner here..."I've liked Epson products. Not this one, though. I had great difficulty with the software under Windows XP. It would not install properly (so it told me) and the copy utility did not work properly."
Well I totally disagree with this opinion. If the installation is followed per instructions (that are perfectly clear), this scanner is very XP friendly. I found it very, very easy to install and I am not a computer geek!!! The scan quality is outstanding! The bundled software is very good and the scans are quick and quiet. I have had scanners that were of poorer results, and much more expensive. This is an amazing scanner at an amazingly low price. I give it 5 stars!!!
Good scanner but .............2003-05-06
I have had a this scanner for a week and find it to be adequate for most of my scanning needs, however I did have a problem with the installation of the Epson Smart Panel software on my XP system. If I had not had to spend 45min manually editing my registry and destroying all traces of the software because the Install wizard would not properly uninstall the product (and yes, you can not install the Smart Panel software if the auto install program detects a previous version), I would have rated this product with 4 stars. It has a good value for the price if you are willing to deal with potential flaky install scripts.
Side note: I am not sure what flaming reviewers has to do with this product but as there is one here I feel compelled to state that my XP skill set is ADVANCED and RTFM would not have been of any help if first reviewer had the same issue I did (assuming of course that he followed the instructions to close all open programs and kill anti-virus scanners).

Speakers broke after only one year!.......2006-05-26
We got these speakers as part of our new Dell system we purchased a little over a year ago. A few weeks ago we heard a crackle in the speakers and now they no longer work at all. I've read other reviews elsewhere concerning the same problem and apparently Creative won't recognize the pattern. Beware!
Great for a small room.......2005-01-01
My husband got me an iPod for Christmas, and I've been ripping CDs on my TiBook (and generally having fun with iTunes) but I didn't want to listen on the iPod all the time (need to find better in-ear earphones). Anyway, laptop builtin speakers of course suck for music, so I wanted some sort of speaker system. Ended up with these because my husband has bought Creative speakers before. The room in our house where my computer(s) are set up is quite small, so I didn't need a huge system, and this was so easy to setup. The powered woofer adds bass dimension and between the volume and equilizer controls in iTunes plus the control for the speaker systems, this is a quite reasonable setup for me. I wouldn't use it in a huge livingroom by any means, but it provides quite nice sound off my TiBook and my iPod. (Here's to speakers that use the earphone jack for connection!) Now my husband thinks he wants to get a set for his game box (a PC) because he can use the speakers when I am not here to complain, and plug in the earphones (which he uses now, because again the built-in speakers aren't great) when I am here. And please note: the volume/bass wired remote that comes with these speakers has an earphone jack on the front, so you can leave everything connected to your computer or iPod and just plug the earphones into the remote.

These speakers have great sound. The subwoofer adds the extra ommppphhh into it! Those who have reviewed it as bad are not sure what they're talking about. First, who gives it only one star for when he was sent white when he wanted black, doesbt thepicture have a white speaker? I thought the sound was great. Definitly worth the money...

I have an old pair of Kenyo's that I paid $12.00 for and they sound better than these!!! Find something else if you enjoy listening to music. $90.00 for these $10.00 speakers is a rip off.
Great for turning your computer in to a stereo.......2004-05-29
I wanted something to improve the sound quality of music played off of my laptop and so I started searching for some 2.1 speakers. Found these on a great bargain at xpbargains.com from Office Depot.
I have them set up in our TV "room" where they sit on either side of the TV and about 5 ft. from the computer. It is a great set up. Gives listening to music from the computer a stereo feel. One thing that would make it better is if the cords between the sub and the computer input were longer. It is just a 6 ft. cord and so I can't really stretch it much further.
These are not THX certified and the satellite speakers are pretty small so the sound is okay, not great. But it can fill our large studio appartment, no problem.
If the price is right, and it was for me (though 78 from Amazon seems little high) I recommend these whole heartedly. They take your computer to a whole new level.
