Do NOT buy this printer!.......2007-09-03

I purchased this printer for a few reasons. I loved the idea of only replacing the ink that is needed. I loved the cost of the printer and the cost of the ink. It prints directly on CDs. Now, I'm going to tell you why these are NOT good traits.

Replacing only the ink that is needed would be great if you could continue printing without the other ink colors. For example, I was printing a business report that was due early in the morning and it was late at night. The entire report was only black ink. I had known for sometime that my Magenta was running very low but I do very little color printing. So why replace it? Everytime that you print, turn off the machine, or just about anything else, a bit of each color ink is used to prime them for printing. Does not matter that you aren't using the Magenta, it still primes. I would have to guess that I get about 20-30 primes per ink before they are empty. And that is without printing anything. As soon as my Magenta ran out, ALL printing stops. You CANNOT print just black if any of the colors are not installed or are out of ink. I thought that being able to buy just the $13 black compared to buying the $38 black for my Canon was a steal. Turns out that to get my black running I had to buy not one $13 ink but, 6 - $13 inks. $70 later, and two trips to Staples I could print my report. I should have just got the $38 ink for my Canon.

The printing of CD's is decent but is nothing to write home about. I find that the sticky labels that run through the printer and then are atached to the cd work far better. I don't know how many CD's got printed off center before I got a final that I could at least tolerate.

I Love Epson R220.......2007-08-28

I have always purchased epson printers and have never had any of the problems in the other reviews. When the epson Color Stylus 820 and for about 10 years I've had no problems with this printer and the same goes for my R220 Print quality is excellent the only complaint I have is the high price of ink, Other then that no problems. If I ever have the problems spoken of here but until then I'm satisfied.

Do Not Buy Epson Printer, Programmed Instantly To Shut Down 4 Repair!! .......2007-08-11

DO NOT BUY EPSON PHOTO R220!! PLEASE READ ALL Reasons:

1. Approx in one year a window will pop up & message will "EXACTLY" state, "Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life. See your printer documents". After this window keeps popping up EVERY time you print, approx 2 weeks after your printer will COMPLETELY shut down forcing you to repair/replace the ink waste pads. This can not be done by the consumer, it must be sent in for repair & costs the same as a new printer. You have no choice but to send it for repair or buy a new printer. This only proves that the printer is programmed to shut down for unnecessary repairs. How can any machine know what part to replace & when it is going to wear out unless it has been programmed??!! This is an illegal scam & Epson is begging for ANOTHER class action law suit.

2. Each time you turn the R220 off it resets the ink cartridges & goes through an unnecessary cleaning cycle, wasting all your ink. I have noticed that ink levels disappear quickly & even the ones that are not being used, the micro chip attached to each cartridge has to be programmed otherwise why would the levels indicate they are low when ink is not used. I replaced a cartridge that the printer said was out of ink. I opened up the supposedly empty ink cartridge & it was almost 80% full!! I could not believe it, Epson was sued for this same incident on previous printers. Another tip off that they are programmed is that if you install a non Epson ink cartridge a window will pop up saying that, "you are not using an official Epson product, do you wish to continue with ink replacement"? This is not word for word but it is exactly the same message that you get from it. I would of typed exact message but i no longer have this inferior printer.

3. If one of your ink cartridges is out, it locks up, forcing you to install a new ink cartridge for further use.

4. The colors on your monitor are not what this printer prints. You get variations & some are so bad that it can effect the beauty of your photo.

5. The ink that this printer uses is horrible, if ANY moisture comes in contact with printed media from the R220, it WILL run, smear, smudge, etc. Horrible & the ink cartridges are VERY EXPENSIVE!! Approx 70.00 to 80.00 dollars.

6. The CD/DVD print tray is so defective in it's style that i can not believe this unit has not been recalled. More than 80% of the time it will not print because of alignment issues. It has to be almost 100% MANUALLY aligned for it to print on CD/DVD media. There is no escaping this, it has to be MANUALLY set.

7. Printer has a paper feed problem, it takes standard paper fine but, try loading in a heavy card stock or photo paper & it WILL NOT catch it. It REFUSES to take the heavy weight paper. It SOMETIMES will take it if you feed it in sheet by sheet. A defect that needs to be fixed!!

I could go on about this printer but i am getting angry at this point with recollections of the agony i went through with this printer. DO NOT BUY EPSON PRODUCTS, they are inferior & PROGRAMMED to fail for unnecssary repair. Schroeder

My First Epson Disappointment.......2007-08-08

I would give this printer a zero rating if I could. Up to this point I have been a big fan of Epson for at home ink jet printing. My previous printer was an Epson Sylus CX5400 which I loved. I can't even remember the model of my first Epson. Here are the reasons I may never buy an Epson again:

1. At first the six separate cartridges (five color and a b&w) looked like a good idea. Why throw away a cartridge that is only low on one color? Well, when you figure in that each individual color cartridge cost $12 (that's $60 for all five color cartridges) and the fact that this printer eats ink like none I've ever seen before, it gets pretty expensive.

2. When one of the cartridges runs out, the printer shuts down and you can't print anything until you replace that cartridge. So if I run out of cyan, I can't even print a black and white document. Even if my printer runs out of a color that I'm using it should still print (giving up a little quality obviously).

3. The cartridges for this printer come with a chip on them, which means if you're using a non-Epson cartridge, the printer will not operate until you put an Epson cartridge in. So you're forced to buy the ridiculously priced cartridges from Epson as opposed to a more reasonably priced "compatible" cartridge.

I've tried printing a few photos from this printer and was somewhat disappointed. Simply put, the pictures looked like they were printed from an ink jet printer (dark and grainy). This printer actually drove me to online photo printing services. For $0.12 to $0.19 a print, the quality is far superior, and by the time you factor in the cost of your ink jet printer, ink, and photo paper, it's probably cheaper per picture.

Great Little Machine!.......2007-07-20

As I read other reviews, I have to wonder if we're talking about the same machine?!?

I bought this in 2004, and printed over 25- 8.5x11's and 100- 4x6's... and have only had to replace the black & light magenta cartridges! Why can I get so much from the ink that came with the machine- and others are complaining about it "drinking ink"? That's $20 for two ink cartridges plus the cost of photo paper- still MUCH cheaper than having someone else print them by far.

I only use the printer for printing photos (which is what it's for)- and don't use the CD print tray. I guess maybe the fact that I only use it for photo printing and not text- is why I've gotten by with only having to replace two cartridges. I also use only Epson Premium Glossy photo paper- yes it's more expensive but the quality is awesome. Apparently it has something to do with how the paper absorbs the Epson ink- which is why other photo paper doesn't work as well- and why generic ink also doesn't offer the same quality.

Epson was sued over programming their printers to show 'out of ink' when the cartridge wasn't completely empty. I'm sure since that lawsuit, they will be working to improve their accountability.

Being a photographer, Epson has been highly recommended in photographic circles. After having seen the pictures that came off this inexpensive printer, I can understand why.

A TERRIFIC PRINTER FOR ALL USES.......2007-07-17

I have had this printer for 2-1/2 years now. It has never broken down, and I print tons and tons of items, from brochures, to pictures (lots of pictures) regular documents, and CDs, as I am a recording artist. Some people say it uses a lot of ink. No, it uses a lot of very small ink cartridges, and if you're smart, you buy them in bulk on line and I have found the cartridges for $2.20 each. The cartridges are small and there are 6 individual cartridges, so when it is finished with one color, you only replace that color. It seems like it guzzles ink, because it has small cartridges. It uses far less ink than any printer I've ever had, and I have never had a bad printing. It has slightly jammed when I over stuffed paper, but it has printed on everything. When I am patient and remember that it is a machine that needs to be maintained, I get fantastic results.

I simply can't say enough good things about this product. I am buying several of these as gifts for my family because they all hate their printers and have to spend upwards of $35-$55 for the big combination color ink cartridges. I buy my ink in bulk, and like I said, I get the cartridges for about $2.20 each. Who can complain about that? When I print a ton of things, I change them about once a week for each color, and of course I change the black 2 or 3 times. However, if it's only $2 per little cartridge, what's a better deal than that? Plus, if you take your empties and send them back to the company, they give you an extra 25 cents off each cartridge.

Those of you who are complaining, I simply am amazed that you don't love your printer as much as I do. It is a great product.

Problems with CD label printing.......2007-05-18

This printer does a nice job of printing CD labels when it works. The problem is it takes multiple attempts to get it to print such a label, burning lots of time. More often than not, it will report an error, stating that the CD tray table is down, when attempting to print the label. One has to cancel the print job, and start the process over.

On other occasions, the printer appears to go through some type of initialization process that moves the CD tray away from the printer, and thus miss aligns the marks on the tray with those on the tray table. The printer then fails to detect the CD tray, and reports the CD tray table is down and should be up. I didn't see these problem during the printing of the first 100 or so CDs.

It's been acting the way describe above for about a year, and I'm finally to the point where I can't take this anymore. It's burning way to much of my time. Attempts at getting help from Epson's online printer support department, concerning the above issues, have been a failure. If you only plan to print at most 100 CDs over the life of the printer, then this printer should do the job. Otherwise, I'd avoid the R200.

CD/DVD printing.......2007-04-20

I bought one of these when they first came out a few years back and I am still using it today. To date it has printed over 300 CD's that I use for work. Yes it goes through ink quickly and it's best to stick with the more expensive epson ink. After market ink cartridges just don't work well with this printer. Ink consumption seems to be an issue with every printer in existence due to the high prices that the manufacturers charge. This is how they can afford to sell their printers at such a low price, they make it up on the back end through ink sales. Epson is no different in that regard and I don't believe this printer goes through any more ink than any other brand of ink jet printer I have owned. Printers are like cars, you have to find one that will work for your application, in my case I wanted high quality CD/DVD printing capability and I got exactly what I wanted in the Epson R200. I use the printer regularly and have never experienced a clog, I have however experienced ink blobs on my projects and occasionally find it necessary to clean the machine. This does not seem like anything more than routine maintenance to me. The most important thing to remember about this printer is that during the startup routine this printer will go through a series of noisy gyrations. One of the things the printer is doing during startup is a nozzel check. The best thing you can do for your printer is to stop and start it every day. This will prevent clogs and Epson recommends that you DO NOT leave it on as much of the nozzel clearing activities happen in startup. I have followed their advice and have never had to deal with a clog. It works for my application and I'd buy another one. I'd rate this a four because of the extra high cost of genuine epson ink cartridges wich you really need to make this machine perform correctly. The ink is considerably more expensive than most other brands, the best deal I've ever had is $65.00 for a full set I bought on ebay. Expect to pay somewhere between $75.00 to $90.00 for a full set at your local office supply store.

Don't buy this printer for basic office work.......2007-04-18

This printer drinks ink like it's going out of style. I have to buy new black cartridges for it every single week and a full set of new color cartridges about every two weeks, despite the fact that all that I do 99 percent of the time is print black and white text documents. Economy grade is just light enough to be illegible; thus, one has to print using regular grade for every print job. Even when set to print using black and white only, the printer will refuse to print if any of the color ink cartridges are empty. Usually when a cartridge is "empty," one can still hear ink sloshing around in it. I know that I don't just have a faulty model; my parents own the same printer and the behavior is exactly the same. This is also a very noisy printer.

For far less money, these imitation units seem to perform exactly the same. I have not seen any error codes/warnings/etc from the printer. The images seem to look about as good as they did with the original OEM cartridges. I plan to order another set when this one runs out. THANKS!

Ink Cartriges.......2007-07-21

For the most part the ink cartriges are of good quality. Out of 2 batches from this company I have only had one leak which is not good. Luckily I caught it in time before it had a chance to damage my printer. I would certainly be very careful especially if you have a high end printer. Other than that if you are looking for a cheaper alternative feel comfortable about these products.

Well worth the price.......2007-04-16

The order was processed quickly and the product performs as expected. The cartridges differed slightly from the original Epson ones but they fit. You get a message on the printer warning that it is NOT a genuine Epson cartridge but go ahead and complete the installation. The printer will show a new full tank for all the replaced cartridges when done. I've printed about 5 5x7 prints so far and all came out with no noticeable difference from original Epson cartridges. Of course, the test will be how long these last, but for the price that's less then a third, it's a good bargain.

Great price, Good Ink.......2007-08-21

Im more than happy with my purchase. I mainly only print web pages and the occasional picture so I really dont want to spend $100's on replacement ink for my Epson printer. I was relieved to find generic ink for a fraction of the cost of the Epson premium ink. The cartridges installed easily and was recognized by my printer. The quality is fine for me, my only issue is on every printed page I get an ink smudge on the lower right hand corner of the page. I tried cleaning the printer heads but to no avail. I dont recall that happening with my last cartridges but its a minor issue and may correct itself in time. Other than that im veryy happy with my purchase and the seller Abacus24-7 couldnt have been any better.

Printer ink clogs.......2007-09-07

This ink clogged my new Epson printer, to the point where I had to clean the print heads between 6-10 times every time I wanted to print. It wouldn't even print 3 continuous pages before clogging up again. (It was not a printer problem, Epson ink unclogged the heads, and it works great now.) In addition, I contacted the seller about the issue, and got no response.
