Super Receiver - A few difficulties.......2007-01-07

This is beautiful and well designed receiver. It looks pretty slick when the motorized plate smoothly and quietly lowers to reveal the CD access. You can assign up to 4096 colors (using RGB values) if you want. The large knob gives easy and smooth control of the volume and other features.

You can have 3 screens of radio stations and even store the name by capturing the stations text feed (just hold down the button you want to assign). The stations are digitally tuned and come in very crisp and clear compared to my previous radio. It seems to pick up about 20% more stations then I'm used to.

This is about the cleanest sounding radio I have ever heard, even when my loud car is making a racket. Voices come out very clear especially on audiobooks. NPR sounds about 10 times better. Highs and low are well defined and balanced even on my lame factory speakers. People that are into that thumpy bass sound may be dissapointed. I wouldn't call it tinny or underpowered though.
MP3 playback is what this unit excels at, you can hook up a USB memory stick or mini hard drive (just watch the power consumption). There is also and SD slot behind the plate and you can fill a CD with mp3s as well.
Complaints: The clock is too small for me to read with my bad eyes. I also wish the USB port was on the front plate instead of having to run the cable out the bottom. I bought a special plate with a usb jack and mounted it in a hole I drilled but they could include this $1 part with it and save us some trouble.
I have some trouble using some of my USB sticks, they just sit there and say 'USB reading'. I think it has something to do the with the U3 software on some sticks. Also it doesn't play in alphabetical order but rather the order they are layed out on the stick... I have to pull all the files off the stick and rewrite to correct this. It is nice that you can see all the file names on the screen of your files but I wish there were more specialized buttons for mp3 navigating. It would be neat if it displayed album covers or lyrics from the mp3 files, or if you could select music by genre from the mp3 tags. Mp3 tags are incredibly useful for sorting, selecting and ranking. I wish more manufacturers worked them into their systems.
A Pause button? Is it that hard! Also a bookmarking button would be really helpful for audiobooks with long tracks. I have to pause audiobooks to drive sometimes and losing my place is annoying.

Overall this is a great receiver and I don't regret the purchase.

This replaced the becker and has all the features I wanted that the becker did not at a bargain price.
MP3, remote, travel search, removable faceplate, very nice display, Volume adjusts automatically to vehicle speed and much more.
It was easy to replace with an adapter plug from pepboyes.

Good but not great...................2007-07-21

After three years of trying to find a simple stereo with aux inputs so I can tie in my Ipod and Sirius radio, I think I have finally found one. I tried many others with their Ipod and aux interfaces and they were terrible, either slow, awkward, on simply didn't work as stated. This has an aux input on the front and one on the back which you need to buy a $25 adapter to use. You also need to buy a $30 Ipod adapter and you can only use one or the other, not both. How stupid is that, but I am finding unfathomable stupidity in design is normal for car stereos. Bottom line, its cheap, it works, you can use the aux inputs or IPod link for your accessories, it sounds ok, nice remote, the SD card is cool and actually works as stated, just load it with mp3s. Controls seem more user friendly than most. Radio pulls in well, better than my Clarion attempts. Its good but not perfect. Perfect would have been the ability to use both aux inputs and the IPod interface at the same time.

Doesn't work 905 of the time.......2007-07-01

I've had this unit for about four years now and it worked for the first year with very few problems. I would get that "disc err", but would mess with it a couple times and it would start playing. I wish I had sent it in for repair while it was still under warranty. The problem has become far too common and rarely plays anything now. We've cleaned it over and over and still doesn't make a difference. This unit is a waste of money! This unit is clearly flawed and Onkyo is either refusing to acknowledge it or they just don't care enough about their customers to do anything about it. This was my first Onkyo purchase and it will be my last.

Trouble? Not me........2005-06-22

All other reviewers had reported a problem or two with this unit, one even claiming it has a system fault, but for the last couple of years it has never given me one problem. I wonder why - I do use the unit heavily almost every day for playing both DVDs and CDs.

Set-up might not be an idiot-proof, but it is not difficult at all, either, only if you can read the operating manual, which is written in plain English. English is not my primary language, but it is easy to understand even for me.

I am not very easy to please (in fact I did call a DVD player I tried before this one (Samsung) "a piece of junk," and I would not give some other equipments in my entertainment center 5-star), but I can certainly give this unit a 5-star rating.

Onkyo Wake UP: Piece of Junk.......2004-09-14

This unit is a piece of junk from Onkyo. I bought this unit 4 months back and for past 3 months its in the service center. I bought this unit since it had both reciever and 5 DVD progressive scan player. I was very happy for the first 2 weeks but it started giving me trouble reading DVD's after that. It took me a week or 2 to realize that its a technical fault in the system. I gave it to authorized service centre and they repaired it saying that there was a problem with the belt that drives the carousal Changer. The system was fine for one day then the carousal disc tray wasn't going inside and there were more problems now compared to the previous one. Its still at the service center and technician's say that they are not getting enough support from Onkyo and they are not replacing the product either because the system behaves inconsistently. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. If Onkyo is not able to fix it or replace this product then whom should I go and talk to. Please suggest

Receiver is ok but DVD/CD player is junk.......2004-07-07

I bought the Onkyo DR-C500 to replace my very old Sony receiver, old Sony 5 CD player, and my cheapo DVD player. I like the idea of having one unit to de-clutter my home entertainment center. However, after less than 8 months of owning I've come to accept that this thing is a total piece of junk and I will never buy another Onkyo product. It cannot read 90% of the burnt audio CDs (I have tried many different brands) and it will not read many DVD videos, including rented ones that, when returned to the rental place, play fine in their DVD player. It is in for warranty work right now, but it has done this since new so I doubt it will improve, seems to be a design flaw. I wish I would have bought new a Sony receiver and DVD player instead of this hunk of junk. I've actually had to buy another cheapo DVD player to read whatever the Onkyo won't. Also, when playing CDs it does not automatically repeat/go to the next disc, you have to switch it to repeat mode every time you switch to CD/DVD play mode, otherwise it will just play 1 CD.
