You're probably familiar with the alphabet of the wireless world--802.11b, g, and a--but another letter is right around the corner: n. While the 802.11n standard still has yet to be finalized, Belkin's Pre-N router gives us a taste of what's in store for the future of wireless... sort of (more on that below). The Belkin Pre-N is backwards compatible with 802.11b/g wi-fi cards and super-sizes them with some of the proposed, but not final, features of 802.11n and applied them to its Pre-N Router, which also doubles as a 4-port Ethernet router. It's touted to both extend range and greatly improving wireless throughput capacity to a maximum 108 Mbps (megabits per second) speed.
However, this is all theoretical, in a sense, due to the fact that routers never achieve the maximum throughput they're rated at (802.11b at 11 Mbps and 802.11g at 54 Mbps). But how does the Belkin Pre-N even hope to double this theoretical maximum? MIMO. That's Multiple Input, Multiple Output, which is an antenna technology that adds a third antenna to the one or two that your current router already has. With this added antenna, the Belkin Pre-N is able to send more data packets at one time, thus increasing the speed of transmission.
As mentioned above, Belkin is using technology and standards that have been proposed for 802.11n. But since nothing has been finalized, Belkin is ultimately guessing at what may come down the pike, and the Pre-N router is not guaranteed to work with the final 802.11n standard when it arrives in another year or so. Why, then, should you invest in pre-release technology with iffy chances of operability in the future? Because, thanks to its backward compatibility with 802.11b/g, it can be used to fill in the gaps of your wireless network today.
We tested the Belkin Pre-N in our home using a PowerBook G4 with an AirPort Express (54g) card, and we were able to compare performance to a Belkin 54g wireless access point (F5D7130), which we've used at home now for over a year. Upon connecting the Ethernet cable from our DSL modem into the Pre-N, then turning on AirPort to receive a signal, we were surprised to find nothing but an error message when selecting the Pre-N. Unfortunately, the Easy Install Wizard (found on the included CD-ROM) does not work with the Mac OS (despite being advertised to), and Mac users will have to use the "Alternate Setup Method" as described in the user manual--i.e., the Web-based configuration tool (which you should access initially via Ethernet cable to one of the router's ports). Setup was pretty simple, and we began to pick up the wireless signal strong and clear immediately.
As we began surfing, we didn't experience wholesale speed increases in our testing, the download times (using the FireFox browser for the Mac) felt somewhat springier. Our main test of accessing the New York Times front page (with a schload of images and graphically heavy ads) took 7 seconds with the Pre-N but closer to 8 seconds with our 54g access point.
The eye-opening difference came in coverage, and not just in long-distance browsing. We were duly amazed at the broad reach we got in signal, with steady, speedy downloads of QuickTime movie trailers as far as 150 feet away from the router in our neighbor's yard. When testing the control Belkin 54g access point, we couldn't even get a signal on our front stoop. But it was the blanket coverage of our home that impressed us the most. Our access point was notorious for producing inexplicable dead spots in our home (smallish at about 900 square feet), and the Belkin Pre-N covered those completely.
If you have a Windows-based PC, you'll experience even faster speeds and more of an expansive reach with Belkin's MIMO-enabled Pre-N network adapter or PC card. But even if you don't pop for the extra gear, you'll still be quite satisfied with the marginal speed increase and the improved coverage area that the Pre-N provides. Works OK, but Parental Control was axed without warning..........2007-09-04
I guess I'm one of only two people who actually used the parental support feature of this router, since this is only the second review to cite this problem.
I bought this router about 2 1/2 years ago, and immediately found the router-based parental control feature one of the best features offered. This worked great for over a year, but then suddenly by mistyping a URL I find that the parental control is gone! After calls to Belkin, a web search and a call to Blue Coat (former supplier of the web-based portion of the Belkin parental control), I find that it was indeed discontinued several months before, with absolutely no warning (the HAD my email address for the account registration).
As was mentioned in the other review, their replacement for it is Zone Alarm, which is PC based, and not nearly as useful or flexible as the original product. Nowhere on the Belkin website is there a mention of the discontinuance of the original feature, nor an apology for the inconvenience.
I find this lack of regard for the customer completely unacceptable, and will NEVER buy a Belkin product again. I feel this corporate malfeasance overrides any other positive features it may have, which were not much in any case given the price.

This is an excellent product and the second one I've purchased. A technician friend of mine recommended it and said it is better than the newer routers whose technology has not been perfected. He was right! It has excellent range and signal strength. So far it has been maintenence free!
Great product but do not rely on them for tech support.......2007-07-29
This is my second Belkin Pre-n router. Product was fantastic on the first one and support was too. So I bought a another one and I couldn't get it working. I called them and they blamed it on the ISP (same ISP that the first Router was set up on fine). I spent hours on the phone with no resolve. I finally came to the conclusion that there must be something wrong with the router and I pushed really hard to request to have it replaced. They agreed. I was told Belkin would call me back in 24 hours to set up a replacement router. I called back after 72hrs because they didn't call me and they told me that they will call me back in 12hrs. Now its already a week since that first 24hrs and they have not called me back.
I will never buy a Belkin product again. The switch to Pakistan for Tech Support definitely short changed their customers. They've impatient, don't speak English well, rude and have not followed up with the promise to replace the router. Its been a nightmare.

This is a great little calculator, with a huge digital display.....but don't expect it to work in a dimly lit room. Under average fluorescent lighting it seems fine, but it might not come on at all in a room that is not well lit.

Awesome scanner - Must have!!.......2007-05-03
I've had this scanner for over a year now and loves it!!! The scanned documents are cleared and the scanner is just so easy to use! I use it to scan all my important documents into PDF files, old photos, etc. Unfortunately, I broke the glass on the scanner when I took it on travel with me (my fault) and bought a CanoScan LiDE 70, which I thought was an upgrade. Boy do I miss my CanoScan LiDE 60, which is so much easier and clearer than the Lide 70.
Better, but still a pain........2007-03-16
This is my 3rd Canon scanner. The unit is nicely made, very slim and lite. Physically much better than previous Canon scanners. However, the Canoscan software is only marginally better. It took a while for me to get it installed correctly, actually two tries.
Great document/receipt scanner for Windows and Linux.......2007-03-13
I've used the Canon CanoScan LiDE 60 under Microsoft Windows Vista and Ubuntu GNU/Linux 6.10, and it works great in both. I purchased this product for scanning documents and receipts, and it does its job very well.
With Windows Vista, you need to download the drivers from Canon's website (they're not included with Vista). The drivers are very minimal, lightweight, and easy to use; in about 5 minutes I was scanning documents straight into Adobe Acrobat.
The LiDE has to be one of the easiest hardware installs I've ever done in Linux. I plugged the scanner in, and started xsane. It detected my scanner and I was scanning immediately--that's it, no having to install or configure anything!
I've a few complaints:
* Noisy: the motor that draws the scanning head makes a very high pitched screech when moving. When I first received the device I thought I'd be able to use it in a library--not happening unless the library is deserted.
* Adequate color reproduction/photo scanning: The color reproduction on my Epson 2450 is leaps and bounds better. The LiDE however is easily 1.5-2x faster, a fraction of the price when comparing MSRP, and has much nicer drivers.
* Too lightweight to scan books easily: The scanner being featherweight is a good thing, except if you have to scan books or anything bound/stapled of more than a couple pages. Stuff shifts easily if you do not hold the scanner and book while scanning.

This is a really great scanner. I had some trouble loading it in my computer but a call to customer help fixed it quickly. It does great color image and e-mail. I have a home office and use it alot.

It installed in XP quickly and easily. I was careful with the directions since I know you must not plug in the scanner until you are told to do so.
The OCR sotfware works very well including tables.
It very small, compact, and quiet.
I like the fact that it gets power from the USB port and doesn't need to be plugged in the wall. I make a lot of programs for the church and some local groups.
The features satisfy my needs.

Great Webcam.......2006-07-01
For the price - this camera is really good. It took me less than 10 minutes to install and set it up. It can take photos, video - the image is pretty clear and it has zoom capabilities. You can adjust the camera (swivel base) based on what is being viewed - or if you change positions. The microphone is sensitive. I am on the west coast and was talking to someone in the Midwest and she could hear me just fine when I was standing 15 feet from the camera talking in a normal voice. The picture was pretty clear with minimal delay. What more do you want for roughly 30 dollars? It'll be outdated soon - but for right now - this is a decent webcam.
It is compatible with AIM, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger (the programs I sue) - not sure of any other compatibilities.
My 1996 webcam was better!.......2005-07-14
What a joke. I am using this camera with my ibook G4 and boy the image quality is very, very poor. The video is also a joke, and the files are way too large. I believe that LogiTech stopped caring for Mac products so they are producing average at best mac hardware. Its amazing, because the best webcam I bought for a Mac was in 1996. That cam worked well in low light rooms, and did so much more and offered so much better software for the Mac os of the time than this camera.
But its amazing that Logitech will go the extra mile for Windows users and offer them so much more software and features, yet will give mac users jack.
Subpar on Mac.......2005-04-19
The Logitech Quickcam Zoom has been a pain in the neck to use on my Mac (iBook G3/700 running Evocam webcam software). On most days the video ouptut is jerky or nonexistent until the cam is unplugged then replugged, the "snapshot" button on top is prone to accidental pressing, the lens cover doesn't attach securely and tends to fall off, the screw attaching the camera to its malleable base comes loose too easily, and the image quality is average at best. It did work with Evocam, but caused more grief than I figured it's been worth these past few months, so I'm selling this off and getting me a Unibrain firewire webcam instead.

Best Webcam for the money.......2005-08-18
Though the years we have tried different webcams offered here on Amazon and this is clearly the best one for the money spent. The resolution is excellent; better than the silver zoom that a friend has that cost almost twice as much. Picture is better than most we have seen in low light indoor conditions. Audio comes in loud and clear. Lots of software is included a picture album etc.
We purchased ours through a 3rd Amazon seller with a 5 star rating and saved loads of money; If you are thinking of doing the same, we suggest you check out their feedback before doing so.
Easy to use.......2005-03-28
I been using the Logitech QuickCam Zoom for some months now and it has worked well. The image and light processing is better than other webcams that friends have. The microphone is also good for chatting in games. It also installs fast and works perfectly with Windows XP SP2. It can even be compared with the JVC digital camcorder that I have. The camcorder is a little faster with the brightness handling, but it does not have the face tracking utility of the Logitech QuickCam Zoom (this utility generally works but sometimes it might zoom in too much but it generally aims for the face of the subject. What I have to try is to use this feature when there is more than one person for the camera to track). I been testing the Logitech QuickCam Zoom hard because I'm using two Logitech QuickCam Zoom and they are both at 10000 km (its about 6200 miles) with a 256kbps connection. The image quality it's really good but the problem is the refreshing rate of the signal, it's slow. Most of the time chunks of the conversation are lost making the audio impossible to understand. This occurs every time when using the video conference option of the MSN Messenger, the webcam, and the audio conversation. It might be the software, the speed of the internet connection, the distance or a combination of all. This makes the chatting with another person not the most fulfilling experience, but you can still see the person on the other side. By the way fast movement makes the image quality worst. Finally considering the price, the features of the webcam, the compatibility with IM programs and the software included (very good and useful, it has a movement sensor that it can be use to look over a place and the photo editors are a great packed for a mid range webcam) makes a great buy.

I would have to repeat what the majority has already said. It's a great, little, inexpensive web cam. I'm having nothing but fun with this little "toy". I experienced easy installation, and with proper lighting, the picture clarity is very good.

This cam is not bad, especially for buying it for only $40.
The flaws are the blue shield (it keeps falling off) and it seems like Logitech just slapped on a cheap piece of flimsy plastic at the last minute to make it look useful. The cam disconnects from the base if you so much as move it without holding down both sides of the cam securely. Another flaw is the zoom... it zooms in too close and it gets more blurry the more you zoom in and does not adjust much even after focusing the lense.
The advantages of this cam is the backlight feature, which means the cam gives off the impression there is a light behind the cam to show a brighter and clearer image. This is excellent to use at night and I don't have to turn on any extra lights when using it with video IM. The picture is pretty clear and decent for the price. When images are taken up close, that is when you feel your money went to good use, it is quite sharp.
This cam is worth it for everyday use, and for $40, that's cheaper than logitech's $50 quickcam messenger's grainy camera.

the people who find this hard to install must have brain damage - it is plug and play at its simplest and best - xp recognizes it in a flash and the software is effortless to install - I tried the similarly priced creative webcam pro and couldn't say the same - the picture quality is not exactly what I get from my coolpix 5700 but for something its size it is really quite extraordinary - the video is totally fun to play with and the mic is really amazing too - I haven't used my headset once with this- the automatic compression for sending the videos is nice too - also the face tracking feature is impressive although there is a little too much zoom for my personal taste - the stop motion animation feature is a bonus and fun to play with - overall a great product for the price - two small complaints - the shield (blue pastic piece) keeps falling off and the base is less than totally sturdy - I use a thin flat-screen monitor and had to jerry-rig a way to keep it in place. For the $60 Canadian I paid during a boxing day sale I feel like I got the best posisble deal - A+
