Customer Reviews:
Software won't run with IE7 Installed.......2007-08-30
Another bitter customer, I've spent endless hours trying to deal with HP software bugs and now complete failure. Scanner scans well, but the effort required to get the software working is not worth it.
Release of this software is inexcusable.......2007-05-08
After struggling with this scanner for over a year I finally replaced it with the scanjet 5590 which does everything that the 5550 was supposed to do. Physically the two scanners are identical on the feature set and form factor down to the buttons and hinges. The difference is that the 5590 comes with HP director software version 2.5. The 5550 uses version 2.0. The HP scanning software 2.0 does not load completely on windows 2000 precluding access to adjustments in scanning settings and changes in the default settings. Getting it to work at all took hours and each scan had to be have settings individually set up for an office trying to automate record keeping. What a waste of time and money. HP should give a full refund or replacement for every one of these they foisted on unwitting customers.
I recommend 5 stars if someone will buy this piece of garbage from me!.......2007-02-19
Another corporation trying to take money by maliciously hyping a product. I've had nothing but problems with all HP-created software (including this scanner). I will not use HP again. As my father taught me, "if you hang around with losers, you will become a loser." Don't hang around with HP. You will waste time, money and energy.
Not purchasing these ever again.......2006-03-31
I do IT work and my company is currently purchasing scanners for various departments. I've already had to deploy these scanners and have found nothing but frustration with these machines. I agree with most everyone else's assessment that the software that comes with these devices is horrible. But I also think the scanner itself is just designed poorly. I thought it was just this HP model but doing all the research that I've done to find a better scanner, it seems that all HP scanners get bad reviews (with the exception of All-In-One products). I don't know what is wrong with HP or whether these scanners are even touched by any of their design engineers. I've had good experiences with most of their other products (computers, printers, servers) but their scanner lines just seem like an afterthought. Anyway, if you are looking for a good scanner, I would recommend the Fujitsu Scansnap fi-5110EOX2. We don't have them in our company yet but we do have the more expensive Fi-4220C2 models and I love this scanner. It's fast, the software is designed nicely, and it scans well. And considering the overwhelming positive reviews that the Scansnap has gotten from other Amazon reviewers, I'm pretty sure they use the same technology throughout all of their scanner products. We are currently going to order the higher model fi-5110C to replace all of these junky HP scanners. I will write another review once I know that these scanners work well as well.
Very effective workhorse ADF scanner.......2005-12-29
I like this scanner for a few reasons:
(1) The ADF: If you fan out your paper and try to remove folds in it, the ADF works just fine. It is pretty fast too at around 10 ppm at 200 dpi b/w. Although it says it has a 35 sheet capacity, I regularly load 50-60 sheets into the feeder with no problem. It does have problems occassionally with cardstock and other thick paper, however. I wouldn't recommend it for scanning a load of photos.
(2) I can't speak about the software because I haven't used it...if you just download the TWAIN drivers, you can use Windows XP's scan wizard. This allows you to control whether the scan is from the ADF or regular flatbed. Also allows you to control basic things like brightness/contrast, dpi, bw/color. Also, if you have multiple pages of the same thing like a report, save it as a TIFF file which will allow you to condense the whole thing into one multi-page file which can later be converted to pdf.
All around great scanner and a big time-saver.

Customer Reviews:
Very poor product quality.......2007-08-21
Nice for making quick copies or individual scans.
Very poor for trying to use it for what most people buy it for which is bulk photo scans. Usually lucky to scan 4 photos with out it jamming up and most of the time it requires a power off/on to work again. Mine finally broke and I never thought I would be so happy to see that I needed to spend money to get a new scanner...
I LOVE this scanner and am sad it's no longer available........2006-09-12
I LOVE this scanner and am sad it's no longer available. The stack-feeder for prints is awesome. I loved being able to put a stack of photos in, press a button, walk away, and come back and all photos were scanned and saved. My scanner no longer works but it's because we took it apart to clean the underside of the glass and must not have put it back together right. "My bad." Anyway, now that I want to replace mine and this is no longer available, I'm quite sad. I can't seem to find anything similar out there either and I'm really unhappy about that.
zero stars not 1 star... run away.......2006-05-03
this product is terrible, the only reason you might want one is to bulk scan photos but then you find the thing won't do a good job - the auto-crop software does not work and you end up getting your photo with a bit of the scanner's pieces visible as well, so then you're into doing work by hand on each image to manually crop. sort of defeats the purpose. hp support is useless on this subjec too. run away.
Malfunction!!.......2006-02-06
Ive had this for about 2yrs and only used the feeder once. Now i go to use it again and the thing wont work!! Its not pulling the pics in, and/or it jams.
When i took it to bestbuy they said they cannot work on this machine even if i pay them, id have to go through HP directly.
Now im in search of a new auto feeder, and cannot find one.
$300 out the window ...
Doesn't work as adverstised.......2005-10-23
This has been the worst consumer electronics purchase I've ever made. I had to have the feeder replaced twice and it still jams. The software is buggy and the tech support horrible. After 18 months the lamp started leaving streaks on the glass too. What a disaster. Steer clear!!!
Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Customer Reviews:
You Get What You Pay For.......2004-01-30
I bought this product with the intent of digitizing my family's photo collection, both pictures and negatives. It hasn't worked out.
The auto photo feeder continually jams, I cannot simply put in a stack of photos and wait for it to finish - I have to poke and prod the photos through. Every few pictures, the photo will fail to eject completely out by a couple of millimeters, and the HP software will hang and I have to REBOOT my computer to continue. It does this with brand new prints as well as older ones. I got it working OK with a stack of stiff 3x5 index cards - but it just doesn't work for me with photos. It's great if you want to scan a bunch of blank cards.
The TMA (Transparent Material Adapter) for slides and negatives is a pain to use. You have to use a two piece carrier to put the film into, then put it into the TMA, then remove the feeder, and then put the TMA onto the flatbed. It's easy to scratch your negatives while jamming them into the carrier used with the TMA. I did a couple of rolls of 35mm film; it took so long I gave up on that feature.
The software controls for adjusting the scan are difficult to use and to learn. Maybe I am just used to PhotoShop, I just quit messing with it cause it took so long.
The only thing I use my 5500c for now is copying documents and scanning a few pictures on the flatbed. I could have gotten something for a lot less money that would do this.
The manual might as well not be there. For example, I got a flashing error "22" on the scanner's display, and tried to find out what it was. It wasn't in the manual or in the help. I finally figured out I had the TMA in backwards (it fits in perfectly well in both the right and wrong orientation), but the documentation was no help at all.
Several emails to HP were no help. The scanner is what it is, I guess. It didn't cost a lot and doesn't really do much. Having the TMA and the auto feeder on this scanner is like a dancing bear - you are not amazed at how well it dances, just that it dances at all.
