Complete waste of money.......2007-08-10

The automatic document feeder basically doesn't work. HP should indicate on the packaging that the ADF is more "ornamental" than "functional". I've resorted to using it as a flatbed scanner, but even this is terrible. The driver software is totally busted. It keeps trying to install re-install itself before every scan (I have to manually kill the install process everytime). I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, using alternate drivers... everything.

What a waste of money.

Terrible Scanner.......2007-05-09

From install through use, this scanner was a terrible performer, and a major productivity waster.

Installation turned up compatibility problems between this scanner and other HP devices! When the dust settled, the ADF started jamming from the first scans. Clearing jams out of the ADF was a nightmare, and as one reviewer wrote, you really would almost be better off trying to scan your documents with a shredder!

Using a paper path cleaner sheet didn't help anything. After a huge waste of time trying to deal with HP support (in India), I downloaded four - four! - patches, which somewhat improved the jamming problem. However, within days the scanning software started having problems, and wouldn't scan. More time wasted on the phone to HP support yielded another software patch - for the wrong product!

We finally gave up in disgust and bought the Fujitsu ScanSnap Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 Clr 18PPM/36IPM Dupl Scanner like we should have in the first place - a worlds better product, with much better software.

Please, save yourself time, energy and money and don't buy this piece of cr*p - I wouldn't use it as a boat anchor.

Totally worthless.......2007-02-02

Don't but this scanner. It is totally worthless. It jams on everything, you can't remove the pages without destroying them. You'd be better off trying to scan with a shredder.

Worst Scanner I have ever used.......2006-04-08

This scanner is horrible. It jams constantly when using the ADF. The OCR software they have included is useless.

Does a whole lot for the price!.......2005-11-03

This scanner offers a wide range of functions for $299. It does a very acceptable job with photos, after scanning about 250 documents, I have had no paper jams. The duplexing is great for two sided scans, however ther is some bleed throgh when scanning with the adf when there is print on both sides. I solved this problem by choosing the option to scan to word and then using the picture toolbar to brighten.

I have found the basic scanning software very easy to use. I use omnipage pro as my ocr software and my first ocr scan with the 5590 was perfect.

For $299 you can put up with a few irritations, but at this point I really haven't found any.

A waste of money. I should have known better than to buy an inkjet printer. The quality is terrible.

Brother MFC - 5100c Malfunction.......2007-04-11

Printer was not heavily used but still consumed large quantities of ink. Print quality was satisfactory to begin with but deteriorated within the year. Head cleaning did not help correct the problem. I was advised by brother to replace the ink cartridges which I did. This did not resolve the problem and I began receiving the dreaded error 41 code. Upon calling brother I was informed the print head was likely bad and that the printer was out of warranty. I was given the name and # of two service reps each of which indicated this had been a common problem. I was quoted head replacement at $150 - $200. Needless to say I now have a somewhat expensive boat anchor. No more brother products for me!

i have never owned a printer that jammed so much in my life.
photo quality is good, but S L O W and you MUST babysit the paper feed.

Machine Error 41 is "kiss of death".......2007-02-22

I have consistently had problems with my 5100c since purchase. The color prints (especially photo quality) are ALWAYS lackluster and NEVER appear balanced with perpetual grain and mixed colors. I resigned ultimately to using it for occassional black/white copies and printing since the colors (even when I didn't print color) would dry up quickly, especially Magenta. At last, (and, of course, only after just purchasing new color cartridges) I suffered the dreaded "Error 41". What kind of machine tells you to "Unplug and call Brother". I did a quick google search to try to remedy the problem at home and found a fountainhead of disgust with this machine and a majority of all other BROTHER products from thousands of other purchasers. There is no way around the error except ponying up to buy a new printerhead (at basically the price of the printer new) or begging/pleading to have Brother replace it for you. It's a piece of (fill in the blank), and now I have the excuse to drop it from my rooftop. Don't buy this machine or other Brother products if you know what's best for you.

Error 41.......2006-11-27

Dreaded error code 41 and I have no way to do anything. This MFC is a total piece of junk and I rue the day I was stupid enough to buy it.
In some ways I am happy it died because now I will go out and buy a decent machine from a reliable company that cares about their customers and their image.
GOOD BYE Brother. May your stock drop to zero and your rip-off company go down the tubes.

problem with headphone jack.......2006-11-26

I bought this in June 2005. By December, the audio was fading in & out, and I'd have to press and turn the earplug into the jack until the audio went back to normal. This got worse and worse, and about a week later, it was not worth using. I returned it to Creative Labs to get fixed. This was a horrendous process that took about 50 emails back and forth. I think about 2 months later I got my mp3 player back - I don't know if it was mine or another refurbished one - they did say they may end up sending it back in a different color, depending on availability. In any case, it worked fine until about a month ago, when the same problem happened. Now I don't think I am under any warranty anymore, so a $[...] product is worthless because of a dumb design flaw - that they didnt ground the plug part well into the base of the device...
In any case, I will not be buying another, until I find a product of better quality...that is worth the price...
(and yes, I did check with other headphones to make sure it was the zen micro and not the earplug)
other than that, I've used it a lot and know this:
-sound quality is fine, when the earplug jack works
-front-face dials are a pain to use
-fm radio practically worthless (no reception)
-uploading music is not the most efficient, and you can't change anything without being connected to the computer
-need to buy a separate charger, otherwise you have to find a computer to hook this into to recharge, i.e. if you run out of battery, you can't just put 2 AA's in it...

Compatible with Yahoo Music(free downloads for $11.XX a month, WOW). Groups music very well. Great sound quality. Less work, more fun, for a price that's fair!

Great but doesn't hold 2000 songs........2005-12-19

This is a fantastic mps player and I don;t understand why people still buy i-pods. The only con about it is that it syas it holds about 2000 songs but mine only held about 1250 songs.

For the longest time, I was considering buying a MP3 player that could house pretty much all the songs that I ever owned and play them at any moments notice. I originally owned a Sony Minidisc player, but since the software and the audio conversion was too much of a hassle, I went looking for a MP3 player.

I originally thought of getting an ipod mini since it was so popular, but from hearing about how little it supported, i.e. only MP3's that were from CD or itunes, I decided against getting one.

It was at a Best Buy that I asked about a similar MP3 player that was similar to an ipod, but wasn't as anal. The sales associate presented me with the Creative Zen Micro, and I was sold. Knowing who Creative was helped sell the player for me, but it was mainly what the Zen Micro had to offer. Full WMA and MP3 support, built in radio, a 4GB hard drive, a built in microphone, and to top it off, up to 2GB of disk space for a removable disk mode.

This player is the best MP3 player on the market. It's smaller than an ipod mini and has just as much battery life, not to mention the fact that the Zen Micro has a removable battery, so no sending this player back to the company when the battery dies out. This player offers so much more than the ipod has ever did. Concerning whether or not it works, my player has never gave me any problems whatsoever in the 5+ months I've had it. My only complaint is that accessories for the Zen Micro can pretty much be bought online, cause retailers mainly sell ipod accessories since it's so popular.

In conclusion, buy a Creative Zen Micro if your looking for a great MP3 player that is easy to use, cause the ipod is just nothing but problems and is flawed in design and execution.

Really cool little player that has not locked up so far.......2005-09-19

After doing a bunch of research on the Zen Micro product line, I was somewhat disturbed to learn that many customers were experiencing 'lock-ups', needing to do resets, and in the worst case having to return unusable units under warranty. Although it's not clear how large a segment of the overall manufactured base these problems affect, it was a concern that made me more than reluctant to take a chance.

So, with some trepidation, I ordered a unit and have been enjoying it now for about one month. I decided to bump up the MP3 sampling to a higher level than the default. When using better-than-average headphones (not those supplied), the sound is exceptional. Compared to the earlier Nomad I bought, this unit offers tons more flexibility/functionality in a package about 1/5 the size.

Many of the reviews I read also had complaints about the way the slide control (touch pad) works on this unit. I guess that's a matter of personal choice, but I had no trouble whatsoever getting adjusted to it.

I see the current Amazon price is well under $200, so I wish I had waited to buy this item. I am not an Apple fan, but I was seriously considering the iPod I also investigated (but decided not to purchase). The main reasons were primarily the proprietary iPod/Apple formats and the improved sound quality offered by Creative.

won't fit your ipod - don't bother with this product.......2005-02-20

i purchased the DLO action jacket (neoprene for 20 & 40GB ipods) for my wife for use on walks, etc around town. However, the ipod doesn't fit in properly. The circle that is supposed to line up with the ipod's doesn't. The plasic part covering the ipod is awkward and doesn't align either so you can't press the play button. So, since the ipod doesn't fit in the case overall, this product is useless. pls save your time and money and consider another ipod case.

Totally Secure.......2005-01-08

I got this jacket a month into having my ipod. I had to buy it because I had been using the one that comes with the ipod and when I pulled the iPod out of that case it was easy to drop. One time I did drop it and within a month of owning the iPod I had it in fro repairs.

This case protected my iPod of another 11 months just fine. My complaint with it tough is the plastic peice that protects the screen and pod from falling out. It is stiched on the inside so when the ipod is in there is creates friction. Acrilic and plastic do not mux and you get a slightly scraped serface.

It will protect your pod though.

After looking around at the local stores (Fry's and CompUSA) I had just about given up on finding a single case that would offer reasonable protection for my iPod in multiple environments - on my belt and also in exercise, and had resigned myself to having a "skin" type case for just everyday use and then shifting the iPod to an arm band for exercise. Not a particularly great solution - expensive (around $20 for each) and a lot of shifting back and forth to cover both uses.

Then I ran into the DLO Action Jacket at Best Buy, which seemed to cover all my intended uses. Unlike the prior reviewer, I found my 40g iPod fits VERY snugly - absolutely zero slop, and I really like not having to worry about keeping up with more than one case. Also, at $29.95, it's cheaper than the two-case approach. The only criticism I have of this jacket is that when you want to convert from belt clip to sport use you have to snake the band through two loops on the backside of the case and over the little plastic belt clip receiver that protrudes from the back of the case. The process is a little tedious, but the end result is great. The unit feels very secure on my arm and it's easy to forget that it's there.

This jacket is a winner.

This case is made of nice material. Unfortunately the Ipod fits rather loosely in the case. Also, one of the Velcro flaps on the top of the case covers the hold button on the Ipod. The case takes away from the Ipod's good looks and slightly hinders usage of the buttons. It doesn't do what I wanted it to do - stay out of the way and simply protect the MP3 player. However, the case would be great to use just for jogging as it comes with a belt and clip that hold the Ipod firmly.
