Amazon.com Review

Save valuable desktop space with the IBM ultracompact cordless phone. It combines 900 MHz technology, hands-free operation, and many popular features-- all in one compact design. The handset measures only 4 by 2.25 by 1 inches.

To set up the phone, we installed the batteries, plugged in the AC power, and connected the phone to the phone jack. The handset is about the size of a pager and includes a detachable belt clip for easy transport. The base is almost as small, making it great for desks with limited space. The LCD shows the time and the number you are dialing. Icons on the LCD indicate the status for functions such as the alarm, pager, battery, and signal strength. The handset can be positioned faceup on the base for convenient LCD viewing.

A single function button operates many features, such as time set, memory dialing, and ringer adjust. Up to 10 numbers can be stored in memory. Press the function button until the memory icon appears in the LCD window. Choose a number between 0 and 10, dial the number you wish to store, and press the function button again to save. To dial a saved number, press the function button and then the designated memory number.

We found the alarm function to be a unique and useful feature. To set the alarm, press the function button and then the 2 button. Enter the time you want the alarm to sound and then press the function button to save. To turn the alarm on, press the function button and then the 3 button. The alarm icon will appear in the LCD and a beep confirms the alarm has been activated. Following these same steps will also turn the alarm off.

In our tests of the IBM ultracompact phone, we were able to use the handset up to 200 feet from the base. Between 200 and 500 feet, static became disruptive, but we were still able to maintain a conversation without losing transmission. For hands-free calling, a headset is included. Voice quality on the headset was clear and sensitive, picking up sounds such as breathing, which we found slightly annoying. Although the fit of the headset is somewhat limited, its cushioned earpad and adjustable microphone are comfortable. --Emily Bakko

5 out of 5 stars small, easy to use and good batt life.......2003-11-18

My husband bought this phone when I was pregnant 2 years back, and I have had it ever since. Its a great phone, its pretty light and can easily fit in the pocket. My phone is 2 years old and still working. I have given it as a gift to several of my friends and they all seem to be happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars great, small phone from a reputable manufacturer.......2003-11-18

this phone is ideal if you desire to keep your hands free when talking on the phone. Unlike similar headsets the 900mhz technology gives you extended range at the same time there are no pointy antennas.

Overall
Great size and looks, probab the smallest in all the headsets
Light weight
Good battery life and reception..
excellent fatures, caller id, speakerphone etc

5 out of 5 stars Really small phone, can fit in my pocket.......2003-10-05

I bought this phone from a reseller on amazon, this phone is really small and has a excellent battery life. The voice quality is good and since the phone is small it can easily be concealed.

1 out of 5 stars A piece of defective junk.......2002-05-21

I paid plenty for this phone and expected it to work. However, the keypad never worked properly. Numbers which I dialed were not received by the phone, or numbers which I did not dial were received instead. Within 10 months, the phone's reception was not working consistently, crackling and making it impossible to use. I tried replacing the battery, which I had to order by mail.... No dice, the problem remains. I called the maker, TT Systems, and they told me that since it was out of warranty, tough luck. I'll never buy another "IBM" phone again, and IBM should be more careful about their licensed products. Buyer beware!

4 out of 5 stars Can't beat this price for a great product.......2000-06-19

The IBM 900-MHz Ultra-Compact Cordless Handset is a great item to have when you need to have your hands free while you work. The handset is the size of a pager, which makes it very easy to attach to your belt or even a waistband. The range of the handset from the base is un-believable. I walked away from my house approximately 10 to 15 yards (from the base) before I received a warning signal letting me know that I was out of range from the base and it did not lose connection. The outgoing tone is very clear according to others on the receiving end. In addition to being a charger, the base of the unit is a speaker box as well. This is great when you don't want to use the headset. You can't beat this product for the price, but it does not include a mute button. I find that a mute button is a necessary feature since the speaker is very sensitive and the receiver can hear a pin drop in the background. So don't sneeze or you might blow your parties ears off. I highly recommend this product to those who want and need a hands free telephone but don't have the money to spend on an expensive brand.

Amazon.com Review

Unlike other headset phones that tether users to the base unit, the IBM 900 MHz cordless phone uses a cordless headset to provide true freedom of movement. Plus, it offers 900 MHz analog operation, a base-unit speakerphone, and full dialing pads on the base and headset.

The powered base unit has some interesting, computer-friendly features. Speaker and microphone jacks on the back let you connect the phone to your PC's sound card so you can use the phone for Internet calls. Selecting regular phone operation or computer mode is as simple as flipping a switch on the front of the base unit.

Unfortunately, the headset is a little bulky, and the one-size-fits-all design doesn't work as well as it could. The headset is relatively large, with a small battery pack on one side and what amounts to a full-sized phone keypad on the other side. The keypad is convenient because it let us dial numbers when we were away from the base unit, but it looks ridiculous sitting on a person's head.

We could live with the bad looks if the voice quality was good, but unfortunately, we could hear an echo of ourselves talking through the speaker. And the unit handled plosives (percussive vocal elements like the p in probably) terribly, amplifying them and echoing them through the ear piece. Callers at the other end of the line came through clearly though, and we really liked the volume dial in the headset that allowed for easy adjustments. This cordless phone might be a decent choice for people planning to make a lot of Internet calls, but for standard use, the echo effect is a real turnoff. The IBM 900 MHz cordless headset phone does a lot of things right, but there are too many compromises in the design for us to give an unconditional recommendation. --T. Byrl Baker

Cordless calling becomes even more convenient with the IBM 900FADS cordless headset telephone, offering completely hands-free operation. Its 900 MHz transmission provides great signal clarity, and caller ID lets you know who's calling before you answer.

The 900FADS features a comfortable, lightweight headset with adjustable boom microphone, belt clip for easy attachment to belt or waistband, easy-to-read three-line LCD display, hold button, last-number redial button, and a flash button for easy access to phone company services such as call waiting. The phone is tone/pulse switchable, and a tone button allows the user to switch to touch-tone service during a conversation. It has a ringer hi/low switch, headset volume control, low battery indicator, and hearing aid compatibility.

Caller ID features include caller ID with call waiting, a 60-name/number call memory, LCD that displays caller's name and number, call waiting name and number, time and date of the call, total number of calls, new-call indicator, automatic callback of the displayed number, selective erasing of individual or all calls from memory, and up and down review buttons for easy access to stored call records.

5 out of 5 stars A great product discontinued.......2006-08-12

This is a great phone. My wife first didn't like it because it looked weird but later she liked it so much that she wore it for every call. You are completely handsfree with this phone. You can keep talking while doing other things. That's freedom.

We lost the headset during moving and couldn't get a replacement. We miss it everyday. I don't understand why it was discontinued and why other phone makers do not copy the design.

4 out of 5 stars revised original review.......2004-07-07

I originally wrote a review on this product which I bought from deals789. That review was not very positive. After communication with the merchant and much energy applied to satisfy the situation on their end I am very happy with the solution to the problems that I was having. They handled the situation in a very professional mannor and worked with me diligently to get the problems resolved. I highly recommend this merchant and can say first hand that if there is a problem with the equipment that this merchant will go out of their way to rectify the situation and make you satisfied. I thank them again for the way they handled my problem.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice, works both with my PC and the phone line.......2003-09-27

My close friend gave this phone to me as a gift. Ever since, I have had this phone I dont have to worry about holding the phone with my greasy hands while cooking, or watering the plants etc.

Most importantly this phone can be used both as a wireless computer headset as well as a regular phone. When not on the phone, I can listen to music on my computer with no wires.

Its simply amazing!

                Amazon.com Product Description

Outfitted with a 16-color display, a high-speed USB data port, 8 MB of built-in maps, and an additional 8 MB of usable memory, the Magellan eXplorist 500 North America includes all the tools you need to navigate throughout the U.S. and Canada whether in the car or on foot. The device is rugged and lightweight, with a waterproof, impact-resistant plastic housing that stands up to almost every adventure, including whitewater rafting and hiking. At the same time, its pocket-sized chassis, which measures a mere 2.2 by 4.7 by 1.3 inches (W x H x D), is loaded with convenient features, such as detailed, built-in maps of North American roads, parks, waterways, and airports; the ability to save five track log files, 20 routes, and 500 points of interest; and an area calculator that determines the distance between saved points of interest--an ideal function when mapping out hiking trails. Other cool and convenient add-ons include a fish/hunt function that mentions the best fishing and hunting times for a specific coordinate and a similar tool that displays the rising and setting times for the sun and moon.

Should the built-in maps and extra memory prove insufficient, users can load additional map data onto Secure Digital (SD) memory cards using Magellan's MapSend software (sold separately), which is available via CD-ROM and, in some cases, online (your computer connects to the GPS through its USB port). There's no limit to the number of cards you can use, giving users access to everything from detailed street maps to topographical layouts to lake charts showing bottom features and boat ramps. Fun seekers will also delight in the Geocache Manager, which invites individuals and families to download geocache coordinates from specific Internet sites and use them on such adventures as treasure hunts and coordinated community projects. The manager employs a PC-style file system to keep geocache navigation easy.

Adding to the simplicity are the intuitive keypad and joystick controls, along with the one-button access for particularly important features. Unlike with many GPS systems, it doesn't take an expert to start navigating right away. The full-color display also helps first-time users, as it's easier to differentiate between different map features and data.

Additional features include multilingual communication (choose from English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, Portuguese, Dutch, or Norwegian); four navigation screens for viewing speed, direction, distance to destination, and more; and a rechargeable lithium ion battery pack that keeps the eXplorist 500 working for up to 17 hours. Conveniently, users needn't remove the battery to charge it; simply plug the charger directly into the receiver and it renews itself.

                What's in the Box
eXplorist 500 GPS, rechargeable lithium ion battery pack, warranty card, user's manual.

3 out of 5 stars For Cyclists: Solid and reliable - software could be better.......2007-04-23

MY EXPERIENCE: I used the Magellan eXplorist 500 on a 400 mile bicycle trip from Baltimore to Central New York, and I've also used it on a 150 mile ride across Flordia, and several shorter rides.

THE GOOD: The screen is easy to read, the maps accurate, and the user interface easy to use while cycling. The unit is remarkably accurate, locks onto the sattelites very quickly (often within seconds). The bicycle mount seems just about sturdy enough - I added some insurance by applying some Velcro, and I clip the wristband to the bike. With those modifcations, the unit has been rock steady in the mount. The unit has been totally reliable, and has enabled me to navigate territory previously unknown to me with confidence. The rechargeable batteries usually last a full day of cycling (usually, about 8 hours for me), and are easy to change. The waypoint alarm is quite useful in ensuring turns are not overlooked. The breadcrumb tracking feature is useful and a lot of fun to "replay" after the trip! The unit seems very solidly built. A 1 Gbyte memory card holds enough information to go almost anywhere.

THE BAD: I don't like that one cannot view distance travelled, speed, and the map at the same time, no matter how one attempts to configure the unit. The PC mapping software strikes me as primitive, and poorly integrated with the unit. The Magellan software I have (admittedly several years old now) requires file formats to be translated using a special kluge utility when transferring data from the PC to the GPS unit or back. File handling firmware in the GPS unit is somewhat difficult to use. Batteries are proprietary, so there is no such thing as just buying some out on the road.

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable; customer "service" a joke.......2007-04-17

Unreliable pile of 'you-know-what'. Worked fine for about 2 months then refused to power up. Fresh batteries, no go. Called customer "service". Outsourced call center to India; rep followed generic script telling me to: 1) use lithium-ion batteries, and 2) press "power + NAV" simultaneously. As suspected, bogus advice. Fresh batteries metered out to 1.62 volts each / 4.84 volts total. Yes, I tried lithium-ion batteries anyway. Still no-go. Am still waiting for Magellan/Thales to respond. Am still owner of unreliable GPS. Still have about $400 invested in unit plus software and maps. Still kicking myself for buying a Magellan product. Don't do it. Really -- don't do it.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Customer Support on the Planet.......2007-03-28

My GPS is an eXplorist XL. I assume the guts are the same, so here goes. I cannot begin to express how disappointed I am with this Magellan GPS. I have been an exclusive Magellan user since 1999, but am now officially fed up.
Customer Support: Lack of. Magellan simply has the worst possible record responding to requests for support. When you call, after being on hold for hours, the person on the phone is clue free. The Web site is inpentrable. When you can't get on the site for any reason. Or when you can't download something, there is no clue as to why. By trial and error I have discoverd you have to turn off ANY firewall, and set your Explorer preferences to accept all cookies.

New firmware upload. It corrected nothing I cared about, and completely messed up the Geocaching Manager capability. When I upload Geocaches the machine arbitrarily drops several ... but you have no idea beforehand which are dropped.

Paperless system: With the memory card (I have 1GB, you should be able to store thousands of Geocaches and ALL the associated text. Nope. You get the name and a few items off the Geocache page. Clues over a few words are truncated.

The "beeper" is misleading. It beeps whether you have done what you wanted or not. Example: I want to edit some coordinates on a marked fix. I use the joy stick to move from number to number. The GPS beeps whether the move was made or not. The beep is independent of the desired result. When you push the joystick you get a beep whether or not an edit was made. A ver annoying feature.

When you do a Go To on a Point of Interest, you cannot see the icon on the compass page. It is too small. It needs to be White and larger. Now it looks too much like the Sun icon.

On a Go To the "compass needle" need to point to the destinaiton instead of North. This option needs to at least be selectable.

You need to be able to put yourself at the bottom of the screen so you can see more of what's coming up. I don't care much about what's behind me...this needs to be a selectable option.

Reliability: A friend teaches GPS at the College level. After 6 years with Magellan he recently moved to Garmin due to poor reliabiliity of the receivers. His experience in large classes was a return rate nearing 40%

Good things. The XL is very rugged. I have dropped it on rocks from "too high" and it has survived well. The color screen is large and easy to read.

                Verdict: Get something else.

4 out of 5 stars Good GPS .......2007-02-26

This is a very neat unit. The color display makes all the difference compared to an earlier version I have used - the Magellan MAP 330. Although it has fewer screen displays than the 330, all the necessary information is available including vertical profile (with the Mapsend Topo software) and it is much more readable. The GoTo pointer is constantly updated on the move as you approach a destination (although I would like to see a thicker line for this function). I am very pleased with the unit and in fact bought a second one for my son.

1 out of 5 stars Slower and full of problems!.......2007-01-21

I had the sportrak color for about a year and loved it before I lost it. I got the Explorist 500 as a replacement. At first, I didn't like it because they took away alot of the menus and I was afraid of having a proprietary rechargeable battery. Then I got used to it although it navigates/zooms more slowly than my Sportrak did. What I liked the least was the compass didn't correct itself when I turned without walking like the Sportrak did - the Sportrak moved like a real compass! I kind of got used to that but after about 8 months of use it started giving me "Invalid Basemap" errors when starting up most of the time. I have tried the online support with Magellan and they have been very slow and haven't helped at all. I will be calling them shortly to see if I get any help there. There are a few other minor things I dislike such as not being able to modify geocaching waypoints without connecting to my pc. I am considering a Garmin replacement if Magellan can't help me resolve this issue.

I have had this calculator since 1991. I use it alot and I have had it in my car since the day I bought it. I purchased several more to keep in my office and around the house. I especially like the big numbers for easy reading and the the big keys spaced far apart so you don't have many missed entries. You can buy alot of cheap calculators but none so easy to use and so long lasting.
