If you've been waiting for the cost of digital music technology to come down and the amount of memory to come up, now is the time to take a look at the Creative Labs Nomad II MG. This player features 64 MB of built-in memory plus a SmartMedia slot for an additional 128 MB. That means you'll get hours of playing time, plus lots of features and an FM radio tuner to boot. With digital music players, memory is the key to a long-lasting and hassle-free relationship. The players store music on flash memory chips, so you won't have to worry about skipping or your music degrading over time. Flash memory means you can also record over and over again with no loss of sound quality. But building memory into these chips costs money, and up until recently you were lucky to get an hour of music in an affordable player.
The Nomad II MG's built-in 64 MB memory means you won't have to invest in additional memory immediately. If you do decide you need more playing time, you can choose from SmartMedia cards in a range of sizes and prices. The tiny cards easily slide into the back of the player and require no configuration or extra power to use (check out our selection of SmartMedia cards).
With the rapid pace of technological developments, Creative Labs has also made the Nomad II MG upgradeable using software that can be downloaded from their Web site. Creative Labs also complies with Digital Rights Management, which means that, to prevent copyright violations, you cannot upload certain files from your player to another device.
Linking your Nomad II MG to your computer is easy using the included docking station. The USB interface means you'll spend only seconds downloading files, using either MP3 or Windows Media Audio (WMA) formats. Turning your CDs into digital audio files is simple with the included Creative Digital Audio Center software.
If you do get tired of your playlist, the Nomad II MG allows you to switch at the touch of a button to FM radio. The player's 32 station presets save time fiddling with the tuner and you can even record from the radio with the player's built-in microphone. The microphone can also be used to record memos or conversations at one of two speeds. A 64 MB SmartMedia card will hold up to four hours of voice recording.
You can view track information on the LCD display, which is backlit for easy viewing in dim light. The Nomad II MG runs for up to 10 hours on two AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries, and comes with a case.
For an affordable and versatile introduction to the world of digital music, you can't beat the Nomad II MG.
Customer Reviews:
This little thing works GREAT for me!!!.......2002-09-05
I take that MP3 player with me on rough mountain bike rides, snowboarding, running, commutes to work, and (sometimes) while I'm at work. I've dropped it numerous times, but still I have had NOT ONE SINGLE PROBLEM with it, yet. My cradle has not broken- maybe I'm just lucky. For those who have none functioning cradles, there are updated drivers online for free- that could solve some of your problems. Admittedly, I have deleted a song or two, because of poor button placement, but if you're capable of learning, you're not going to do that more than a few times, at best.
For the price and the performance, this unit ROCKS! With its capabilities to expand to the 128MB card, that's a lot of songs! Get this MP3 player! It's totally worth it!
Still working after 2 years.......2002-08-08
The other reviewers aren't lying. It stinks........2002-07-03
The first is its poor design. All of the function buttons are located along its sides. In order to hold the thing in any natural and comfortable way, your fingers have no other place to go except over the ultra-sensitive function buttons. The slightest change in pressure will activate any button you are touching. You'll find yourself accidently pausing, stopping or (worst of all) DELETING a song as it is playing very often unless you adopt the incredibly annoying practice of locking the buttons whenever you aren't using them. But unlike some other players, this also locks the volume button- which means you'll spend lots of time unlocking-changing volume-locking-unlocking-skipping a song-locking. Ugh.
And why any designer would put a one-touch delete button right near your general function buttons is beyond me. Make sure you memorize the layout of the buttons, because it absolutely stinks to delete a song when you just wanted to pause it and there is no second chances once you hit the extremely innocuous and sensitive delete button.
The second drawback of this player is how often it seems to break inexplicably. My player is fine, but if I want to use it anymore I'll have to get a new cradle. My cradle just decided to stop functioning one day. It wasn't jostled or banged around, it wasn't dusty or submerged in soda- nothing. I'd chock it up to bad luck if I hadn't gone on the web the next day and found dozens of unsolved breakages involving this player and its cradle.
This unit is slick looking and tiny, but not worth the trouble. Look elsewhere for your MP3 player needs. You can do much better.
Get To Know Nomad Warranty Service.......2002-06-26
(P.S. Why would anyone with an IQ higher than a chimp buy three of these things? I couldn't find another one with expandable memory and an FM tuner).
Read the reviews: This thing [...stinks].......2002-06-16
The buttons are located on the sides of the unit, where most people usually grab the unit. This results in frequent accidental button presses.
A couple of months after I got mine, I had the battery-clip problem that others have described. It was easily fixed with aluminum foil, but honestly, battery clips have been manucatured for decades without much problem; why is it such a recurring problem here?
Finally, after a little over a year of use, my docking station isn't acknowledging that the unit is docked. Therefore I can neither recharge the unit nor change the songs. The player is now useless to me.
From reading the other reviews, it's obvious the problems I've had with mine aren't an isolated case. So if you want a well-designed, well-manufactured, reliable mp3 player, DON'T buy the Creative Nomad II MG.

It's a perfect first DVD player, or as an additional unit for growing families. Small in size but big on features, it's affordable home entertainment at its best!Amazon.com Product Description
Offering a downright amazing feature set for such an affordable price, Cyber Home's compact CH-DVD 300S makes a rich and promising starter player. You get everything from top-of-the-line progressive-scan component-video outputs to built-in MP3 decoding, JPEG image viewing, and 3:2 pulldown for viewing movies in their native frame rates.Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the CH-DVD 300S stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
With 3:2 pulldown support, the player corrects for a common distortion in DVDs when 24 frames-per-second movies make the leap to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown removes the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
A set of multichannel analog-audio outputs routes decoded Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround signals to your audio/video receiver. Dolby Digital and DTS signals can also be channeled through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and optical) for direct connection to a surround-featured AV receiver. The player has left/right analog audio outputs, too.
The CH-DVD 300S is compatible with DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW media, handling just about any recordable disc you give it. It can even play both PAL- and NTSC-formatted discs, handy when viewing non-region-specific European discs. Other features include motion zoom, screen saver, last-disc resume, and repeat play.
What's in the Box
DVD player, AC power cord, multi-function remote control, remote batteries, and a composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect.

Dazzle MultiMedia 6-in-1 Reader
Manufacturer: Dazzle Multimedia ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics Product Features:
ASIN: B00006LL8P |
Product Description
As digital technology continues to expand in today's market, there will be more and more devices utilizing digital media. Digital cameras, MP3 players, mobile phones and PDAs all now use either CompactFlash, IBM Microdrive, SmartMedia Card, MultiMedia Card/Secure Digital, or Memory Stick media. With the Dazzle 6 in 1 Reader, you can read them all.The compact, dual slot design allows CompactFlash or IBM Microdrive to work concurrently with the SmartMedia, Memory Stick, and MultiMediaCard/Secure Digital. As a stand-alone reader, this offers an alternative to the cumbersome process of connecting digital data devices directly to a PC or Mac, which uses up precious battery life.Customer Reviews:

Excellent Product and Price.......2003-10-11
Works good.......2003-09-05
No fuss.......2003-08-23
But note:
- There are only two slots (or drives) for all six formats. One slot is for IBM Microdrive and CompactFlash, the other is for four different formats: Smartmedia, Memory Stick, Secure Digital, and MultiMediaCard. So you cannot, say, copy data from MicroDrive to CompactFlash, or copy data from SmartMedia to Memory Stick.
So it's something to consider if you plan to copy data from one format to another. Some other brands provide up to four slots so they may be more versatile.
- The flimsy stand is a joke. I wonder why they bother to include it.

Great For MOST Media Types.......2004-09-03
Good with updrade.......2003-04-04
There are no guides on the device (or much of an manual either) to tell you how to slide in the card so if you don't get a read from the drive at first, try inserting the card another way. Also, by default, the 2 drive letters assigned are not descriptive - i.e., you can't tell which one is for which card type. But after you figure it out, you can change the drive name in Windows.
Quirks aside, this device does the job.
works flawlessly.......2002-10-27
it's *cheap* in my opinion, worth every penny. i'm about to buy a new digital camera, and i know this thing will be able to read the cards.
Doesn't Work Properly............2002-10-09
Overall - quite disappointed - had the potential to be a very useful product!
Use Memory Cards like Floppy Disks.......2002-09-02
Here are six ways I use the Dazzle 6-in-1:
1) Downloading digital image files -- With the Dazzle 6-in-1, I can use my normal downloading program to transfer digital image files directly from my camera's memory card to my PC. Since my Dazzle is always either connected to my deskptop PC, or always with me for my laptop, this is much more convenient than hooking up my digital camera to my computer (and trying to find the cord) to download.
2) Acccessing a single photo -- Using my photo editing program (Photoshop Elements), I can also access any individual file on the memory card. (The only way I can access a single photo through my digital camera, for example, is to download the entire contents, which is a pain if all I want is the last photo taken.)
3) Transferring files (of all types) among computers -- To transfer large files (photos, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations) among my PC's, I normally resorted to using CD's, or e-mailing the file to myself (such as from work to home, or vice versa). Unfortunately, not all of my computers have a CD drive (but they all have a USB). And working from a memory card is definitely easier than trying to download (or upload) a file using a 56k home e-mail modem.
4) Downloading software updates -- For software updates downloaded from the internet, I would normally save them on my hard drive or on a CD. With the Dazzle, I can now store the files on a memory card instead. This saves the memory capacity of my hard drive; and (as I mentioned earlier) not all of my PC's have CD drives. Using a Dazzle and a memory card (and loading through the USB) allows me to more convenient update all of my computers.
5) Transfering music files -- My MP3 player also uses a memory card. Using the Dazzle to download songs (from my PC) to the memory card -- is actually faster and more convenient -- than downloading into the MP3 player directly.
6) Carrying my work home, not my PC -- Since transferring large files was such a pain, I normally ended up lugging my laptop computer home with me if I needed to complete a project after hours. With my Dazzle, I can now take the data with me (on a memory card), and leave my work PC -- at the office where it belongs! (Cool!)
The Dazzle comes with a software disk. But I found that the Dazzle was plug-and-play with my Windows XP computers (so no software installation was required.)
The plethora of memory cards available can make data storage seem confusing and intimidating. But with the Dazzle 6-in-1, they are now all as easy to use -- as "floppies." I highly recommend it!

Philips VRB664AT 4-Head HiFi VCR
Manufacturer: Philips ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics Accessories: Product Features:
ASIN: B00004U2OJ |
Amazon.com Product Description
The Philips VRB664AT four-head hi-fi VCR features a double-azimuth video system that produces a clear and stable picture during still/pause, slow motion, and forward/reverse search. The 19-micron heads ensure the same quality playback of your recorded programs whether you taped in standard or long-play mode. You can program the Philips VRB664AT for unattended recording of up to eight separate programs over a full year. The bilingual (English and Spanish) onscreen programming can be operated from the universal remote control (batteries included). VCR Plus+ simplifies the recording processing by allowing you to enter the PlusCode programming numbers found in television listings. One-touch recording allows you to record up to eight hours of shows with the touch of a single button.
The auto DBS RecordLink allows satellite dish owners to synch their DBS receiver to the VCR. This feature automatically runs the VCR in record mode when you set your receiver to tape a program. The Philips VRB664AT will then shut itself off when the program is over.
Other features include a built- in MTS/SAP decoder, digital auto tracking for a clearer picture, auto clock set with time-zone select, commercial skip, indefinite timer backup memory, and front-panel access to most menu functions. Front audio-video jacks allow you to hook up a camcorder or a second VCR. The built-in automatic head-cleaning system keeps the Philips VRB664AT running smoothly. This VCR comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
Customer Reviews:
Not well made.......2002-10-08
I've had my VCR crash, eject the tape and turn itself off a number of times now. It has probably happened 4-6 times over the past year. It does so for no apparent reason. It seem to flash some sort of error message with a number and a funky looking character after doing so.
I get bad hissing sound when playing old tapes recorded on my old Philips VCR.
The remote is poorly laid out.
My last Philips VCR was just fine and had none of these flaws. This model is a step backwards for them.
I'm going to get another brand to replace this one. I don't think I'll return to Philips again.
on 3rd vcr...........2001-07-24
User Interface is Useless.......2001-05-21
The remote control is backlit only behind 6 buttons, the 6 buttons that are specially shaped (making them easy to find in the dark) and most commonly used. Less commonly used buttons are arranged poorly, such as the "slow" button a row above and to the right of the "slow speed" buttons, next to the VCR+ button, which pops up a blue screen to enter a VCR+ number and requires another key sequence to escape from.
The play/stop/rewind/fast-forward buttons are laid out in quadrants on the remote. On the console, the play/PAUSE/rewind/fast-forward buttons are laid out in the same manner. The stop/eject button is off to the side. The console has a Menu button, but since the remote control quardant is needed to program, the console buttons make programming difficult (Stop, the bottom button on the remote, is the "down-arrow" and is off to the left side on the console, while the bottom bottom button on the console, "pause", does nothing).
There is an eject button on the REMOTE! It is in a prominent location at the top, and is taller than many of the other buttons. I cannot tell you how many times we have accidentaly ejected a tape when trying to pause it.
The on-screen status display automatically turns off 10 seconds after you press any button, which is useless if you are rewinding or fast-forwarding a tape and want to stop it by watching the timer. If you press the "status" button on the remote, the display again times out after 10 seconds, so rewinding a tape to a specific point requires much dexterity and quick reflexes.
If rewinding when "memory mode" is turned on, the VCR will slow down to a near stop when 3 minutes from 0:00, and will not allow you to stop or play or even eject until it completes rewinding.
The only way to check a "program" is to review each and every program in sequence, without even being able to scroll backward in the list, only forward.
The current VCR mode ("PLAY", etc) replace the time display on the console for a few seconds whenever the mode changes. This is mostly useless, since the mode is also displayed onscreen. However, missing from the console display is the current channel, and if reception is not perfect, the on-screen status disappears, so you cannot see the current channel.
The remote control has many buttons that switch functions when in TV mode, but are completely useless with the TV. These include play/stop/etc, TV/VCR, pause, and more. The mode buttons for TV, VCR, and CABLE are directly below the MUTE button and the numeric pad, so are very easily pressed by accident. In addition, since the sequence to program the universal remote is MUTE-TV-NUMBER-NUMBER, or MUTE-VCR-NUMBER-NUMBER, it is EXTREMELY common to accidentally reprogram the remote, rendering it useless until reprogrammed correctly.
The picture and sound quality seem to be satisfactory.
Also, as another reviewer pointed out, it is extremely NOISY. This machine is in my bedroom and wakes my wife up when performing any action (rewinding, stopping, beginning to play, etc).
