The Roady receiver is compact and easy to transport.

The Roady unit has seven function buttons, a tuning wheel, and 10 number keys. While tuned to an XM channel, the Roady's default display contains information about that channel, song title, artist, and the Roady settings. You can use the tuning wheel to preview the artists and songs currently playing on other channels before deciding whether or not to stay with your current channel.

With the TuneSelect feature, you can program the Roady to alert you with a tone and display change when a favorite song (choose up to 10) is played on a channel other than the one you are listening to. My title says it all. The only complaints I have are the following:
Lack of accessories. Would be nice to have a boombox it can plug into.
The stupid external decorating accessories is just that, stupid. I stuck on the blue cover, and the blue rubber band. A few months later the blue rubber band was pulling on the corner button that it helped aid in changing my settings. It's safe to say I took that off.

But I have to give the unit a five for as the unit itself, it's great. So if you buy this I highly recommend get the remote with it, and if you want to hear it in the garage, bedroom, or whatever, get the home kit too.

How to make motorcycling across Kansas on I-70 bearable.......2004-07-10

My wife bought the Roady for me for my birthday in anticipation of a three-week motorcycle tour through the West.
I had it installed by Sean Franklin of Cyclegadgets.com, using a Hoon mounting bracket that secures the Roady to the top of the brake fluid reservoir on the right side of the handlebars of my '03 BMW K1200GT. The mount has a little platform where the magnetic-based antenna sits and the power source is hard-wired into the bike's accessory plug.
I use custom molded in-ear monitors made for me by an audiologist, so they deliver stereo sound while acting as earplugs to block much of the external wind noise.
Sean initially thought I would need to run the Roady signal through a radio or a Boostaroo amplifier. However, when I plugged my in-ear monitors into the Roady I was surprised to discover the signal was actually a bit too loud. As a consequence, I'm running an in-line volume control between the Roady and the monitors to back the volume off a bit. You can also use the "menu" button to access an output volume control.
I'm writing this from a friend's home in Alma, Colo., some 10,680 feet above sea level, having spent two days on the road from my home in Indiana.
I've made this ride many times, but this was the most pleasant ever, thanks to the Roady and XM satellite radio. The best way I can think of to describe the sound quality is "ear candy." The traffic/weather channel for St. Louis helped me avoid delays and the incredibly diverse music and talk offerings kept me from being bored at any point during the 1,300-mile journey.
The Weather Channel forecasts were especially nice to have, since weather is a major issue for long-haul motorcycle touring.
At my age (59 next week), I need reading glasses for close-in small reading, but I found the Roady display was quite easy to read without my glasses. Likewise, the controls are easy to work with a gloved hand.
(The unit comes with three sets of decorative trim - red, blue and silver faceplates and edging. I found the edging wouldn't stay put and interfered with my operation of the channel selector knob in the upper right corner of the unit, so I removed the edging.)
Cyclegadgets.com also has a rain cover for the Roady. Also, the unit is easy to unplug and stow in a tank bag, saddlebag or pocket if you're worried about rain or theft while you're away from the bike.
I expected to lose the satellite signal coming up U.S. 24 through the canyons from Colorado Springs, but it never faltered. About the only time I dropped the signal was under a gas station awning.
During the few pre-trip days that I had the Roady, I used it in the car and my wife immediately became an XM convert, so I expect there's another Roady in our future once I return home. Fortunately, XM has a family plan that lets you add units to your account for an additional $6.99/unit instead of the base monthly rate of $9.99.
The Roady is more compact than the Delphi SkyFi and way smaller than the Sirius receiver I watched a mechanic install on a Gold Wing.
Prior to the Roady, I'd used a Sony MiniDisc player with several hours of MP3 music I recorded from my collection. I ended up carring the player and maybe 20 discs, which took up a lot of space in my tank bag. I left that all behind on this trip.
XM gives me access to a nearly infinite variety of music, including a lot of new stuff I would never hear otherwise.
So, if you're a touring motorcyclist looking for a way to ease the tedium of hours on the superslab, the Roady may be the answer for you too.

July 27, 2004:
I just returned from my 6,000-mile motorcycle ride through the West and have some observations to add.
I got caught in a rainstorm in southern Idaho and couldn't pull over before the Roady got a little wet. The moisture caused the buttons to stop working. The good news is that once I got beyond the rain into hot, dry desert air, it dried out quickly and returned to normal functioning with no apparent ill effects.
Loss of signal was very rare - sometimes when a large semitrailer truck was close enough to block the line-of-sight angle to the satellite and when in a deep canyon or a tunnel. (I missed a couple of minutes of the long version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida while going through Glenwood Canyon and its tunnel system on I-70.)
Among the details I found useful was the "tune select" feature: When you hear a song you think you'd like to hear again, you can select it by pressing the little wheel in the upper right corner. That puts it into memory and the next time it's played on any of the music channels, the unit will beep and ask if you want to switch to that channel. You can ignore it, or press the wheel to go hear your song.
If you hear a new song that you'd like to know more about later, press the "memory" button and it will memorize the artist and title - a handy feature since it's kinda dangerous to be scribbling notes on a motorcycle at 70 mph.
The original Roady is being blown out at discount prices now, since the Roady2 is coming out. The units are physically identical - the only difference I can discern from the promotional material is:
1. The Roady2 has an built-in FM modulator that puts out a signal your car radio can receive, eliminating the need for a separate modulator. Even so, hardwiring or the cassette adaptor deliver better results, and
2. The Roady2 has a personalized stock ticker that will display up to 20 stock quotes.
Those features are pretty much irrelevant to the way I use the Roady, but you might find one or both worth waiting for the Roady2.

Great performance in a small package.......2004-06-23

Small size, but what great entertainment! If you are considering satellite radio - this is the one to get! Despite the smaller size, it has no problem matching the bigger ones - performance is excellent. In the vehicle, it performs as well as a built-in on a rental car. As I wrote this, I was listening to it in my office - with a false ceiling, metal trusses and a wood roof overhead! (Update: turns out I was listening to a terrestrial [earth] repeater. But after almost a year the Roady is going strong and I am still loving it. (and an XMPCR went into the office and the Roady is either in the car or portable))

A neat feature is its portability - the best of both worlds. It can be readily moved between car and home or wherever. When it's out of the car, you just need an antenna, power (get a cigarette lighter adapter, and you can use the included cord)and either headphones or some amplified speakers. The home kit (optional) can help here. (For somewhat permanent installations in the car, using the Sky-Fi's wired FM modulator gives a great improvement over the cigarette lighter FM gadget. It's pricey, but was totally worth it - it eliminates competition with FM stations)

As far as reception goes - you have to have expectations in line with how the signal gets to you. In the case of XM, the satellites are in a fixed position over 22,000 miles above the earth. Just as with broadcast FM, if something gets between you and the broadcast antenna, the signal will fade or disappear. Unlike FM, digital signals don't "fade" and allow scratchy, weak reception, they just drop out when not enough information is reaching the receiver. The sound is either there in quality or it's not at all. So, set your expectations knowing that you may not be able to receive the satellite(s) when something significant is between you and it. Having said that - I have very few dropouts, only tunnels, mountains/cliffs that are close, and snow-filled fir trees seem to interfere at all. And those are somewhat temporary (in the car).

The biggest consideration is antenna placement. Some homes won't allow reception inside or certain areas. This is why long cords are available to get the antenna nearer to a "view" of the satellite's signal. Note that vehicle antennas need at least 6 inches of metal around the antenna. Follow the rules, and you will be very happy with it! There's nothing like it - so many choices. About $10-$12 a month to eliminate commercials is completely worth it!

Excellent for your vehicle.......2004-06-16

The entire package comes for less than 120 dollars. Along with a quick online service sign-up, you are set to go (including installation) in your car within 30 minutes of purchase. Their customer service is also EXCELLENT if you have questions and want to talk to a real person. The choice of channels is top rate, especially being able to hear CNN and other news casts live. This proves invaluable during an emergency where you are connected to a global viewpoint rather than your local stations periodically breaking into the commercials and songs. It is small, professional looking, and easy to operate with a customized background color- you choose it. I was extremely impressed with the price for all that you get. I thought satellite radio was far too expensive, but it is now affordable. You cannot go wrong with this product. Highest recommendation.

Great system but ............2005-04-04

I recently installed a Talkswitch 48NLS box in my business. In general I am happy with the feature set which is more than adequate for a small business. It can operate without being linked to a computer but to modify the settings you need to be connected to a computer. Talkswitch claim that the link can be via serial, USB or Ethernet but in fact the serial line is the only fully supported link as USB is supported only for older versions of MS Windows and the Ethernet link does not save the configuration correctly in the firmware and requires one to reconfigure the swtich everytime you have a loss of power to the switch.

Not a full-fledged camcorder, and yet very much more than a toy, the Gateway DVS20 MPEG4 Pocket Multi-Cam is one of a new generation of "convergence" devices that take both still images and tapeless digital video. In a head-to-head contest with a full-featured tapeless camcorder--something from Panasonic D-Snap's line, for example--it may not come out all that well, but at this price range a more fair comparison would be with an entry-level digital still camera. Seen in this light, the DVS20 does very well indeed. In fact, I now find myself favoring my Gateway over my everyday digital camera, a low end Olympus.

The DVS20's compact body

The first advantage it has over almost every still camera in its price range is the swiveling LCD that lets you take photos from awkward angles--you can shoot holding the camera over your head for example, by angling the LCD down, or capture stylish, cinematic low angles. And the shutter action is above average, with very little of the dreaded shutter delay effect of many digital cameras (you know, when you press the button and the picture gets taken sometime the following week).

So what about video? The DVS20 does okay, though it would be better to think of video as a bonus function rather than its main purpose. It performs middling to poor in low-light conditions, but in daylight it takes pretty clear, if somewhat herky-jerky footage. A memory card is a must if you want to do any significant amount of taping--the size of the internal memory is actually pretty generous at 64 MB, but this will hold a maximum of 18 minutes of video, and that's at the lowest resolution (a very grainy 320 x 240). It's worth noting that the mic performs much better I expected. I was able to tape a public event, getting very clear audio for both the PA and the ambient crowd noise.

One real downside is the rate at which this thing eats through batteries--one day of sporadic use was all that a pair of alkalines lasted me. Do not proceed without rechargeables! And while we're talking downsides, I should also mention that the flash tends to wash out facial features at distances under ten feet. Overall, though, you'd be hard put to find a better value in this price range. --David Stoesz

Good Camera but not So Good.......2006-12-12

when i bought this Camera i read other Reviews about it and i saw almost every one agree about the Quilty of the Video that it was not Good and i would agree witht hem too Ecery thing is looks good and Smoooth but if u plain to Shoot Video , Do not try that indoor it has to be Outdoor where is ligh and it has less than 20 feet for Good zoom .

if you buy this Camera be sure you not looking for very Good Quilty Video , Do not write back and say this Camera has Bad Quilty of Video every one here telling you its not agood Camera if u plan to Record your Wedding or Birthday Party .

i just Bought it and i thought to Return it back becose the bad Quilty of the Video but i thought to keep it and give it to one of my Family Kids.

A solid, cheap camcorder and camera........2005-10-18

While the DVS20 doesn't provide high-quality video, it's very adequate, especially considering the price. I am a college tennis player and use it to tape my tennis matches. The quality is just fine. The DVS20 takes decent pictures as well. I'm happy with this product and would recommend it to those who don't need serious, high-quality video.

Little Gateway Delivers.......2005-10-14

I read the reviews before I bought this little multi-cam, so I knew what I was getting. I also knew that for the price, this was not going to be some high-end piece of equipment. That said, it was exactly what I wanted. Something easy to carry and that takes decent short videos and still pictures. We recently took it camping with us and took several videos of ourselves and our dog. And, you cannot beat the price.

Item is not that great as it seems.......2005-10-11

Well, at first it was a nifty little camera, but after a week, it something started to go wrong with it. I don't exactly know what it was, but now it won't turn on anymore, I tried new batteries and still nothing. The quality of the pictures is pretty good for being a 2.1 Mp, and its a nice little camera if you want to take pictures once in a while, but be carefull because they are defective.

Shake rattle and roll !!!.......2002-03-22

This is a good drive for burning disks. I've never had a bad burn with this drive. But it is very noisy at high read speeds. I first had this drive in a micro ATX case and it was bearable, but then I moved all my computer components to a full sized tower. Im afarid that my computer is going to shake apart when this thing is going! I recently got a new LG DVD/CDROM drive and Im using that as my primary drive cause this thing just vibrates too much. If ya can go for a different drive. This thing is just too noisy.

Burns as well as my Plextor.......2001-08-29

i purchased this drive after i've been through two (2) plextor 161040A's, both of which have gone south within a 6 month period. The plextor customer support was very good, however, their warranty replacement process is painfully slow (approx. 1-2 months). I thought i was paying for one of the top drives, which worked flawlessly for the most part, only to find that their reliability is sub-par with my experience.

Extremely annoying vibration machine!.......2001-08-12

This drive is ok as a burner...I could give it a 4 star rating...but when used in the read mode to install programs or play games it is a -10 star performer. This thing vibrates so loudly when installing programs from a cd I think it is going to fly apart. I reurned one and a got a replacement from HP(absolutely great service). But it was just like the original. I asked them to replace it with a 9500i, but that was disallowed. So I am writing this review of a real lousy piece of gear. I have many HP products, this is my only complaint about any of their gear.

not bad, but plextor's always has the best writers.........2001-07-12

ok, a user wrote a review that said plextor took 2 minutes longer than the hp.. please, don't listen to this person, he/she's obviously new to this whole thing to have any idea as to what he's talking about.

first off.. the plextor that does it in that much time is the 12x.. if you haven't payed attention, plextor has 16x cd-burners out for under 200 dollars, and it was rated number one product of the year by cnet (i believe, could be pcworld.. actually i think it is pcworld) anyway.. that's a very big thing to say about an electronic device.. not to mention it was given to a cd burner.

you can with a 16x make a cd in 5 minutes.. but if you have an hp, you better not print something, or run a big program or else! you'll get those all too frequent "coasters" which are totally wasted discs.. and are useless..

plextor was the first burner i know of to come out with burn-proof technology. i'm not going into the explaination of what it is, but you can find it on their website.. since i bought my plextor, i haven't had a single disc go to waste.. and believe me i tried my very hardest to get the disc to mess up.. i had big programs running, and i started printing a pretty big document.. and it still worked perfectly.. true, it slows down when it meets with those buffer underruns.. but at least you don't get errors.. i wouldn't mind waiting an extra 2 minutes for a perfect disc, than to have to re-do the whole process over again. hp should stick with printers.. which are also pretty terrible.

After buying a Yamaha and a Plextor i have to say this is a great peice of softwear. You can burn a cd in six minutes while the yamaha can get it in five. Its better than a plextor because you create a cd in seven minutes. The softwear is super. Better than both the yamaha and plextor. You can create vcd in six miutes and watch them in your dvd player. If you have a dsl or higher connection, i advise you to buy this or the yamaha 161040 and download movies there a program called limewire. Then you need to change the file to .DAT and then burn it to cd. You will be able to watch the movie now! Its super. I give it a five star because its that good. Well, in order of speed, i say Yamaha 16x then Hp 16x then Plextor 16x. The order of softwear its hp 16x then yamaha 16x then plexstor. My first serious review!

A very cool phone system, but took too much set up for me. Lacks basic functions (like 'redial') that any $5 wal mart phone has. I still loved it. But my family hated it so I got outvoted and had to give it up. Recommended for gadget freaks but it might irrite your family by being cumbersome for the 'real world'.

I've owned this system for over 2 years, and have 10 handsets "working", more or less. It's a fabulous product IF you're willing to get to know it. "High maintenance" would best describe what you need to do to get all the features working. If you rely on just the Users' Guide, you'll probably pack it up and return it. BUT - if you're patient, and use the Cygnion website forum to get answers to questions, you'll find the things you're struggling with will probably work, you just need to know the magic tricks that other users have figured out. All the features listed DO really work. But without the forum and usergroup (MSN) you'd be lost. I actually love the system, and while I'm running it in my home rather than a small business, I needed a system that had expandability up to 10 handsets that was affordable. It was a "steal" for the price I paid for this 10 handset system. I use the handsets as intercoms to page family members on different levels of the house. It will do everything for you except fold your laundry. But you'll need to be patient with her.

Have been using this system since 2000 and with the exception of a few dead handsets the cybergenie is still kicking along. I'm very thankfull about the 3.0 software upgrade and drivers for windows XP. Without that it would have been in the trash by now. As for features, the phones speak for themselves, literally. Voicemail is a big reason I got the system in the first place and to have unlimited space on the hard drive to store voicemail makes it a logical soho solution. For the small/home office just starting out, cybergenie has got to be one of the best phone systems you will ever get for the features and for the price.

I bought the cybergenie system at a local computer store with the understanding that the manufacturer (cygnion) had gone out of business. So, mainly thinking it was going to be a fun toy to play with, I was amazed by it's full business functionality. I have since moved the system into my retail store and purchased additional handsets for all of my employees (works with 10 at once). WE NO LONGER MISS ANY PHONE CALLS! It's like supplying all of my employees with cell phones except without any ongoing expense. We can page each other and transfer calls to each other and all of us can answer any call coming in on our two lines.

since cygnion appears to be out of business, I actually bought another system as a backup (actually I'm using it at home again) and I got a deal on some more handsets on ebay.

Hopefully other companies will pick up where cygnion left off -- I have to assume that they were just a premature victim of the DOT COM fall-out which is too bad.

If you are at all computer savy, this is definitely the phone system for you
