Product Description

Shockwave Series models are designed to deliver outstanding audio entertainment in the toughest outdoor conditions. They're rugged enough to withstand shock and vibration. Looking for a peak outdoor listening experience? You've found it with a Panasonic Shockwave model.PRODUCT FEATURES: CD-R/RW Playback; Heat Resistant Design; Pop-Up Disk Eject System; Stereo Headphones; Flexible 4-way Power Supply; Backup Memory (CD-DA) 45 seconds; No Skip System; Water Resistant; Shockwave Tough Body Design; LCD Display on Top Cover.

Amazon.com Product Description

Offering extended battery life and high-powered anti-skip technology, the rugged Shockwave SL-SW940 also features a raised-swirl Active Spin design on the its top cover, making it look as cool as it sounds. Incorporated into the design is a bold LCD display centered within the swirl, with operating buttons bordered around it. The player has all the elements that toughen ShockWave products for active use: a water-resistant shell and a dual-lock mechanism to ensure the CD compartment closes tightly. Additionally, a special gasket-type seal around the CD lid and a deep-seated, water-resistant battery compartment make this portable even less susceptible to damage from sand, water, and heat.

Panasonic's exclusive No-Skip technology helps prevent interruptions from jostling during active use. No Skip's unique construction uses rubber brushings to absorb shock, while an anti-skip mechanism and an anti-skip digital servo further prevent read errors. A 48-second memory reserve provides added back up.

Now, battery changes will be fewer and farther between thanks to Panasonic's PowerLast high-efficiency power system, which combines an efficient motor with low-load circuitry for playback time of up to 33 hours on two AA batteries. CD playback abilities include playback of standard CD, audio CD-R, and CD-RW; 24-track random-access programming; repeat and resume (which picks up where the unit left off when last stopped); and skip/search and memory/recall. A hold switch prevents accidental starting, stopping, or track skipping during use or transport.

4 out of 5 stars Looks cool.......2007-01-17

I bought this last year for my 8 year old son. It is still going strong. It has a cool look and meets all of his needs. I know nothing about the quality of the headphones or such but he is happy with it.

3 out of 5 stars Better Options..........2004-08-19

I bought this CD player three months ago. First of all, if you're considering buying this, definitely treat yourself to a nicer pair of headphones, the ones that come with this are murder on your ears. Secondly, within a month of getting this, the locking mechanism got screwed up and now it opens randomly- an annoying interruption. Granted, this player has taken some pretty hard hits- I'm not the kindest master. In general, though, it feels pretty crappy- it's plastic, not metal. Also (small things), the volume's really annoying, it doesn't go up nearly as high as I'd like, and it's too big. The anti-skip is this player's saving feature. I've never had any skips; it works great. Despite that for $60 there are better options out there. I'd recommend some of Panasonic's other similarly priced players, of course Sony's usually good too. I actually really liked the Sony D-EJ100PS (I stole my friend's while she was on vacation), it's a lot smaller, has a much longer battery life and it too doesn't skip (ever). It's flaw is that it also has a low volume problem... *shrugs* maybe that's just me.

1 out of 5 stars Worst CD player I've ever used.......2004-06-24

I just used this CD player for the first time last night and I was absolutely appalled at how HORRIBLE the sound on this piece of crap was. If you hate music, or if you don't know what you are talking about, then this is the CDplayer for you. I played 3 different CDs on this thing and they all sounded terrible (1 was Foo Fighters, 1 was Fischerspooner, and one was a CD-R cd that I made). In almost every song on all of the CDs the vocals were completely unintelligible so that you could only hear the music (which was almost entirely trebble - and the "Bass Boost" feature on this thing is a joke, it barely did a thing). And as for the CD-R disc, I made sure to look for a player that could play these CDs, and yeah, uh, it'll play them - as in, you press play and it does something, but as far as the sound - it makes all the songs sound like they're being played through a tank of water (all gargled and quiet with little electronic screeches and beeps - and I had listened to this particular disc many other times in my stereo and car and it sounded fine until I put it in this crappy thing). So if you just want a CD player that looks good on a shelf, this is for you, but other than that, you might as well take $60 out of your wallet and throw it in the trash can (oh and don't forget shipping).

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST CD PLAYER I'VE EVER OWNED.......2004-02-04

I just bought this portable CD player at my local Wal-Mart and now I couldn't be happier. This is the best CD player I've ever owned. It's got a cool design and it plays CD's very well. I would strongly recommend that people purchase this item.

I really love this cd player, it sounds, looks, and works great...the only problem that I can think of is what everyone else says, the earphones that it comes with..they sound bad and are uncomfortable, but if you put decent earphones on the sound is AWESOME. I also like how its water resistant, I even take it into the bath tub. And in the 5 weeks ive had it I got NO SKIPS What so ever..and thats with skateboarding and even snowboarding.

Amazon.com Review

A feature-laden personal stereo at a bargain price, the Memorex MD5030 combines a capable CD player and versatile AM/FM tuner in a handsome, ergonomic package. Like most portables, the MD5030's controls are on the front and top of the player. What makes this player special is the shape of these controls. Small, directional arrows for forward and reverse skip, ovals for programming radio stations and selecting CD-play mode, and a round button for turning antishock protection off and on make the MD5030 easy to operate without stopping to look at the player.

Memorex has included two separate display panels. The first, ringed by its relevant control buttons, sits on the lid and displays radio station, band (AM or FM), and station-preset number. The second displays CD track number, elapsed time, and disc programming and is located near the upper edge, surrounded by transport keys (play/pause, stop, forward, and reverse). Volume, power, headphone, and line-out facilities occupy the right side of the MD5030.

Several other amenities elevate this machine above competing no-frills models. Disc and track repeat, 24-track programmability, and an intro option that plays the first 30 seconds of each song should satisfy disc-jockey wannabes, while a bass-boost switch on the left side of the player adds an extra measure of low-frequency fullness. We also appreciate the machine's ability to recharge ni-cad batteries. When you connect the AC adapter and install the appropriate batteries, a small red LED indicates the batteries are recharging.

The MD5030's 3-second antishock protection system is sufficient for activities such as walking or light exercise. However, the MD5030's 3-second protection is hard-pressed to handle the prolonged shocks encountered in a car, on a mountain bike, or while jogging. As the antishock system seriously shortens battery life, you should turn it off when not needed.

Sonically, the MD5030 is better than average, with fine stereo separation, a clear midrange, and fine vocal reproduction. Thanks to the use of 1-bit digital-to-analog converters, high frequencies were neither bright nor aggressive, making this machine an excellent companion for marathon listening sessions, as it isn't fatiguing. The tuner section was also impressive, although distant stations were noisy when the mono/stereo selector was set to stereo. In these cases, switching to mono dramatically improved reception.

Our major complaint is not with the player but with the supplied headphones, which offered inadequate bass and only average reproduction of subtle, recorded detail. It should be noted, however, that few portable CD players in this price range offer headphones with acceptable bass. We recommend you treat yourself to a better pair.

Given its excellent ergonomics, fine tuner, and many features, the Memorex MD5030 is a strong contender among midpriced personal CD players. --Anthony Chiarella

5 out of 5 stars great value, user friendly.......2000-04-18

very smart design, allows user to recharge batteries in sameunit, am/fm tuner with pre-sets is a rare feature for portable cdplayers especially at this price. actual weight is less than a pound (...)

5 out of 5 stars Built like a brick Outhouse........2000-04-15

This thing is rock solid, and un-like the other reviewer, I did turn it on, It sounds great and works well, it didn't skip unless I shook it for more than 3 seconds, and when I say shake, I really mean shake. It is a little heavy, but it doesn't seem overly heavy, it just feels well built.

1 out of 5 stars Total Crap.......2000-04-08

I bought this CD player with a gift certificate I got for Christmas. First of all it ways about 10 pounds, and it only comes with only 3 secound anti-shock"which they don't tell you in the review or on the web site". I didn't even use it as soon as I opended the box and saw how big it was I repacked it and sent it back.
